Fostering Intercultural Competencies Through Global Awareness And Immersion, Marissa A. Sutera Mar 2014

Fostering Intercultural Competencies Through Global Awareness And Immersion, Marissa A. Sutera

2014 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity Documents

Among the many changes in the world today is the growth in the interrelatedness of people and cultures across nations. This change makes intercultural competence skills even more important for higher education students, especially in the United States, as they will be entering an increasingly multicultural and diverse workplace. Beginning with an understanding of global awareness achieved on university campuses, educators can work towards preparing students to succeed in an internationalized economy and strive towards creating students that are motivated to take actions closer to world peace. Furthermore, universities can immerse their students in other cultures through study abroad programming …

Of The Most Common Weight-Loss Programs, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, And Medifast, Which Is The Most Effective?, Jenna Carlson

2014 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity Documents

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared obesity as a global epidemic, estimating 2.3 billion people will be overweight, and 700 million people will be obese by 2015. With the rise in obesity, weight-loss programs are one avenue that consumers are using to battle the epidemic. Approximately 2/3 of adults in the Western population are trying to lose weight or avoid weight gain.

The purpose of this paper is to review the current research of four major weight-loss programs: Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, and Medifast, regarding fundamentals of the programs, the programs safety for consumers use, effectiveness of the …

Altered Recurrence In To The Lighthouse, Heather Lamb Mar 2014

Altered Recurrence In To The Lighthouse, Heather Lamb

2014 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity Documents

Virginia Woolf, in her novel To the Lighthouse, portrays memory progressing in a spiral motion. In this motion, a single memory, event, or moment in time, is captured and relived. These memories are initiated by present events similar to past experiences. Therefore, memories are a series of reoccurring events on a personal timeline that are altered slightly with each reconstruction, an experience that I will refer to as altered recurrence. Through altered recurrence, Woolf depicts art as a result of the creator’s memory; yet, this pattern of memory also deems the work obsolete.

Examining The Historical Representation Of Native Americans Within Children’S Literature, Lauren Hunt Mar 2014

Examining The Historical Representation Of Native Americans Within Children’S Literature, Lauren Hunt

2014 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity Documents

In this research, I evaluated the historical representation of Native Americans in children’s literature. The portrayal of Native Americans in children’s literature is important because Native Americans are commonly included within elementary school social studies curriculum. For this reason, teachers should know how the literature they select historically represents Native Americans. This historical representation includes—but is not limited to—their interactions with European explorers, colonists, and eventually Americans. Teachers must be aware that publishers of children’s books are businesses; their job is to sell books. As a result, these companies do not always ensure that the books they sell are historically …

Extracellular Gluco-Oligosaccharide Degradation By Caulobacter Crescentus, Gerald Presley, Matthew Payea, Logan Hurst, Annie Egan, Brandon Martin, Gopal Periyannan Mar 2014

Extracellular Gluco-Oligosaccharide Degradation By Caulobacter Crescentus, Gerald Presley, Matthew Payea, Logan Hurst, Annie Egan, Brandon Martin, Gopal Periyannan

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

The oligotrophic bacterium Caulobacter crescentus has the ability to metabolize various organic molecules, including plant structural carbohydrates, as a carbon source. The nature of β-glucosidase (BGL)-mediated gluco-oligosaccharide degradation and nutrient transport across the outer membrane in C. crescentus was investigated. All gluco-oligosaccharides tested (up to celloheptose) supported growth in M2 minimal media but not cellulose or CM-cellulose. The periplasmic and outer membrane fractions showed highest BGL activity, but no significant BGL activity was observed in the cytosol or extracellular medium. Cells grown in cellobiose showed expression of specific BGLs and TonB-dependent receptors (TBDRs). Carbonyl cyanide 3-chlorophenylhydrazone lowered the rate of …

Communicating The Science Of Igcp 591 To The Public, Lewandowski J. Katherine Mar 2014

Communicating The Science Of Igcp 591 To The Public, Lewandowski J. Katherine

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Selling the broader impacts of science to funding agencies has become a necessity in a time when competition for grant money is high. While involving students in research is still important for maintaining a pipeline of trained scientists, the bar has been raised and it is increasingly incumbent on us to communicate to the public what is so important about our work. To be competitive in the search for funds, there must be a plan for the science funded to be disseminated to the public. The education and outreach plan for IGCP 591 attempts to appeal to this broader audience …
