During the Second World War, Japan was an imperialistic powerhouse that took over most of Southeast and South Asia during the war. In this time of conflict, Japan committed atrocities that are still being questioned to this day. One of their lesser-known war crimes was the enactment of so-called comfort stations during this war. These stations provided Japanese military men with sex from women, dubbing them “comfort women.” These stations were established widely throughout the Japanese empire after the events of the Nanking Massacre to prevent rapes of women in captured territories and to protect their soldiers from venereal disease.1 …

Head and neck cancer (HNC) is an aggressive, complex diagnosis that accounts for approximately five percent of all cancers diagnosed in the United States (Kawashita et al., 2020;National Cancer Institute, n.d. A). There are various types of HNC and several tumor sites inwhich HNC can potentially occur. Because routine screening for HNC does not exist, it is difficult to diagnose and often found at advanced stages (National Cancer Institute, n.d. A).

When determining how successful a student may be as they attempt to navigate higher education after concluding a prison sentence, there are a few factors that need to be considered. Namely, the barriers to college and academic success, as well as the facilitators of success should be examined as many factors fall under these two categories (Donaldson & Viera, 2021). Barriers to higher education and academic success are the determining factors in if a student that has completed an incarceration sentence would enroll in, and complete, courses. Even if this unique population of students has the means to attend college …

The First World War was the first time American soldiers had participated in a war at a distance from home that did not easily facilitate home furloughs. Although the United States and Europe are physically separated by more than 3,500 miles, the relative distance between American World War I soldiers on the war front and their families on the home front was minor; the correspondence between them mitigated the physical and cognitive distance.
Historians of the First World War have explored soldiers’ contact with their families while in training camps and the US military’s intentional cultivation of a balance between …

Graduate, 2nd Place: Assessing The Knowledge, Attitude, And Everyday Life Practices Adopted Among Eastern Illinois University Students Towards Sustainability, Joel Holison
2023 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents
The concept of sustainable development gained attention and came into focus with the publication of the Brundtland Report (Brundtland, 1987). later the Education for Sustainability (EfS) initiative was presented in 1997 through the “Thessaloniki Declaration” as a carrier of the common and single message (Knapp, 2000). Sustainable development is the way a country pursues its economic development that does not jeopardize the opportunity for future generations to achieve their development (Brundtland, 1987). Deforestation, land destruction, soil degradation, air and water pollution, and other types of environmental deterioration are paid in the name of economic progress. This detriment may outweigh the …

The Strategic Application Of Alternative Grading To Improve Retention And Enhance Equity (Spring 2023), Teshome Abebe, Michael Gillespie
EIU Think Tank Reports and White Papers
Universities across the United States have been using the Pass/Fail grading system for a variety of reasons and in many different ways. There are so many uses of the system as there are universities.
In general, universities have used the Pass/Fail grading system to: help reduce stress and pressure on students; provide more flexibility in course selection and encourage students to explore and pursue interest without fear of damaging their GPA; reduce perceived discrimination and bias in grading, providing more equitable opportunities for all students regardless of race, socioeconomic status or prior academic background; and to improve retention rates by …

A Cross-Disciplinary Examination Of Institutional Diversity: How University Programs Advance A Diverse Workforce, Joseph Trendowski, Matthew R. Trendowski, Thomas N. Trendowski, Stephanie D. Trendowski, Michael J. Trendowski
Journal of the North American Management Society
Diversity in higher education is encouraged and celebrated throughout many predominant universities across the United States. Institutions of higher learning benefit from diversity in all aspects of campus life; from classes, organizations, or extracurricular activities. Institutional theory is applied to this study to examine how diversity programs are implemented in various university types (national research, private, and state) as well as different settings (educational opportunities, leadership, and accessibility) to develop a qualified and diverse workforce. To achieve this objective, we suggest universities implement a multifaceted approach focusing on initiatives at the university, faculty, and student level.
Stress And Employee Engagement, Kumar Subramaniam, Steve Roussas
Stress And Employee Engagement, Kumar Subramaniam, Steve Roussas
Journal of the North American Management Society
We explored strategies that HR leaders within a single healthcare organization in Franklin, Tennessee, used to reduce employee disengagement caused by stress and identified four themes related to business practice. The four themes were (a) integration of employee engagement practices into culture and business processes, (b) providing managers with the job resources they need, (c) intentionality, transparency, and honesty in communications, and (d) relying on supportive supervisor behavior. Senior executives and HR leaders should examine the feasibility of proactively implementing similar strategies to mitigate employee work place stress, reduce disengagement, and improve employee engagement and commitment to the organization.

Diversity Initiative Schemas: Students’ Cognitive Representations Of Managing Diversity On College Campuses, Jeanetta D. Sims, Ashley Neese, Anna Henson, Atoya Sims, Treyce Glidden
Journal of the North American Management Society
Using schemas as a theoretical framework, this paper explores students’ cognitive representations of managing gender and racio-ethnic diversity initiatives on college and university campuses. Exploration of student schemas is necessary to inform higher education administrators of the existing expectations present among students since these expectations interplay with student responses and reactions to diversity management efforts. Using content analysis of students’ narratives, results concerning students’ cognitive representations are offered, and key managerial implications are shared for those in higher education leadership.

Managing Workforce Diversity In A New Age: The Challenges And Implications Of Ageism, David M. Savino
Managing Workforce Diversity In A New Age: The Challenges And Implications Of Ageism, David M. Savino
Journal of the North American Management Society
Managing workforce diversity is one of the major challenges facing human resource professionals today. Key among the many diversity challenges is the reality of dealing with a growing aging workplace population. As a result age discrimination and ageism has been a subtle and covert strategy of many organizations for years. The great recession brought the true realities of ageism to the surface in a distinct way with the number of reduction in force programs that seemed to wrongly target older workers disproportionately as evidenced by the number of age discrimination cases filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) during …
Gender Imbalance Improvements In Academia, Business, And Physical Education, Stephanie D. Trendowski, Thomas N. Trendowski, Joseph Trendowski
Gender Imbalance Improvements In Academia, Business, And Physical Education, Stephanie D. Trendowski, Thomas N. Trendowski, Joseph Trendowski
Journal of the North American Management Society
Traditionally, men have disproportionally held leadership positions in academia, business, and physical education. Fortunately, graduate programs in each field are providing women opportunities that were not apparent a few decades ago. We examine Business and Physical Education for transgressions of discrimination and provide evidence from personal interviews which indicate progress has been made for women in these fields. We provide several cross-disciplinary themes that transcend gender barriers to promote an equitable workforce in addition to field specific recommendations.
The Effects Of Absenteeism On Organizations: A Longitudinal Study Spanning Eight Years, Lee L. Hisey, Jude Bumgardner
The Effects Of Absenteeism On Organizations: A Longitudinal Study Spanning Eight Years, Lee L. Hisey, Jude Bumgardner
Journal of the North American Management Society
This study spanned eight years—from 2009 to 2017—and examined the effects of absenteeism on employers. The sample was randomly selected from the Louisiana Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Employer database. Most of the employers indicated that absenteeism had no effect on their operations. However, results from one-sample t tests indicate that, as a result of absenteeism, there was a statistically significant increase in the following measures: customer complaints, level of rework, amount of time spent training, tardiness, number of team and employee efforts, work schedule alterations, and late deliveries to customers. One explanation for the discrepancy between the …

Building Consumer Competence And Trust: Hrd Professionals As Champions Of Change, Rubina F. Malik, Gouri Gupte, Brandy Edmondson, Vickie Cox Edmondson
Journal of the North American Management Society
Despite allocating significant institutional resources to establishing consumer trust, organizations often unintentionally fail to ensure that the social contract between the organization and its customers is upheld and that trust is the center of every transaction. This paper seeks to answer the questions of what role, if any, do organizations play in improving consumer competence and trust, and what substantive role can human resource development professionals play in that effort? Five consumer learning strategies using adult learning principles are set forth along with a decision-making framework that can support an organizational change in the power relationship between vulnerable consumers and …
A Conceptual Model On The Relationship Between Human Resource Strategy And Turnover, Lee L. Hisey, Jude Bumgardner
A Conceptual Model On The Relationship Between Human Resource Strategy And Turnover, Lee L. Hisey, Jude Bumgardner
Journal of the North American Management Society
This paper proposes a conceptual model, explaining the effects of certain reactive or proactive human resource management strategies on an organization’s ability to acquire resources. The purpose of this model is to demonstrate how, in response to dysfunctional turnover, reactive human resource strategies moderate an organization’s ability to acquire resources, while proactive human resource strategies mediate the organization’s ability to acquire resources. The model proposes a moderating effect due to the ineffective strategies of an organization, such as increasing employee work effort in order to compensate for dysfunctional turnover. On the other hand, the model proposes that implementing proactive strategies, …
It’S Time For Baby Boomer Small Business Owners To Retire: Or Is It?, Debra Mitchell, Kent Rhodes
It’S Time For Baby Boomer Small Business Owners To Retire: Or Is It?, Debra Mitchell, Kent Rhodes
Journal of the North American Management Society
This paper describes baby boomer small business owner succession as it relates to retirement from the perspective of the baby boomer business owner and society. Small businesses are key contributors to the U.S. economy and workforce. As society anticipates the retirement of the single largest part of the U.S. population, the “boomers,” many small business owners of that generation have, themselves, anticipated retirement. However, few business owners have prepared for retirement with a succession plan. Even in their 60s, many small business owners are delaying their retirement. This paper challenges conventional retirement norms and addresses the phenomenon of retirement through …

Correlation Between Turnover And Organizational Performance: An Exploratory Study, Lee L. Hisey
Journal of the North American Management Society
Survey methodology was utilized to measure the effects of turnover on civilian employers of enlisted personnel in the National Guard and Reserve, where turnover is operationalized as deployment of a National Guard or Reserve employee. The sample was randomly selected from the Louisiana Guard and Reserve database. The results indicate that respondents perceived that as a result of deployment there is a positive correlation between the predictors level of organizational output, change in the number of customers served, and the number of team efforts with the criterion quality of the organization’s output. Conversely, when the predictor amount of work effort …

The Mediating Of Organization Change, Perceptions Of Politics And Interpersonal Conflict At Work On The Leader/Member Exchange And Job Satisfaction Relationship, Jeffrey Muldoon, Shawn M. Keough, Eric W. Liguori
Journal of the North American Management Society
Using the lens of social exchange theory, this study examines the role of organization change, perceptions of politics (POPS) and interpersonal conflict at work (ICAW) on the LMX/job satisfaction relationship. Results indicate that organization change, POPS and ICAW each have a partial negative mediation effect on the LMX/job satisfaction relationship. Implications for management are briefly discussed.
