An Exploration Of Intaglio Processes Influenced By The Woodblock Style Of Utamaro, Lenore Branchaw
An Exploration Of Intaglio Processes Influenced By The Woodblock Style Of Utamaro, Lenore Branchaw
Masters Theses
An exploration of the intaglio processes as influenced by the woodblock style of Kitagawa Utamaro is examined in this paper.
A brief introductory section is devoted to the history of European and Japanese printmaking. The Japanese, for the most part, used woodblock prints while the European artists more frequently made intaglio prints. The European intaglio prints were the work of one man while the more complicated woodblock prints were developed by the collective efforts of Japanese craftsmen.
The intaglio technique allows the artist to work with one plate, but many blocks of wood may be needed for effective linear design …
Homosexuality In Art, Julian P. Wade-Salisbury
Homosexuality In Art, Julian P. Wade-Salisbury
Masters Theses
Homosexuality in art is nothing new. It has existed for centuries. This paper traces, via relative examples, homosexual themes in art from the ancient Greek vases to the twentieth century. The paper is divided into four sections: Greek Homosexuality, Christian Traditions, 19th and 20th Century Art, and My Work and that of other Artists. Examples from these chapters have been taken and are discussed, with special reference to the titles.
In chapter one there is an emphasis on homosexual imagery found on ancient Greek pots, and the almost relaxed way in which the Greeks portrayed and lived with homosexuality. They …

The Ungraded Primary Department: Centennial Lab School, Decatur, Illinois, John Reeves Henry
Masters Theses
During the summer of 1980, this writer became a member of the faculty of Centennial Laboratory School, 1500 East Condit, Decatur, Illinois. The transfer to Centennial occurred in order to take part in the establishment of an Ungraded Primary Department within that school. This paper examines the rationale, planning, and production of such a department as an integral part of the total educational program of Centennial during the first semester of its existence.
The Ungraded Primary Department is a valuable educational experience for five, six, and seven year old children. It provides flexibility of grouping according to individual needs, a …
Prediction Of Junior Required English Grades Using Expectancy Tables At Central High School, Clifton, Illinois, Richard Lee Longfellow
Prediction Of Junior Required English Grades Using Expectancy Tables At Central High School, Clifton, Illinois, Richard Lee Longfellow
Masters Theses
Problem:
At Central High School in Clifton, Illinois, students are required to take one of three Junior English classes in order to graduate. These classes are: American Fiction, American Literature Survey, and Modern American Literature. Many times, students would ask their counselor "What are my chances of passing the three different Required Junior English classes?". The counselors would only be able to give a personal opinion that was based on Sophomore English grades and not a substantiated answer.
The problem had two parts. The first part was to determine if a relationship existed between Sophomore English grades and Junior Required …

An Intercultural Comparison Of Instrumental And Terminal Value Preferences Of American And Chinese Students, Ferne M. Rogers
An Intercultural Comparison Of Instrumental And Terminal Value Preferences Of American And Chinese Students, Ferne M. Rogers
Masters Theses
Robert Oliver has said, "Mankind is separated less by language barriers (grievous though they are) than it is by cultural differences." One effect of this separation can be denial of the rich experiences available through expansion of cultural perspectives. More serious effects in a thermo-nuclear world can be repeated conflict, war, even annihilation. Hence, it is in the interest of all to find a way to co-exist. The means for doing this begins with understanding the cultures of others through communication.
The first step in intercultural communication is acceptance of the worth of other systems. There are barriers, however, to …

Marlowe's Doctor Faustus Finds Reality: In The Comic Mask, Eva Marie Enis
Marlowe's Doctor Faustus Finds Reality: In The Comic Mask, Eva Marie Enis
Masters Theses
Scholars have considered the protagonist of Christopher Marlowe's The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus from nearly every perspective, but, at the same time, they have been hesitant to recognize the humorous incidents, particularly the so-called clownish scenes, as having a legitimate place even though much comic incident appears in Marlowe's source. Though scholars have acknowledged Marlowe's play to be a morality, they have not viewed Faustus as a morality character whose comic mask is his reality.
An examination of the morality tradition, with Marlowe's debt to the morality in mind, justifies the inclusion of much …

Progressive Development And Implementation Of An Enrichment Program For Sixth Grade Students At Forsyth Grade School, Robert Ritter
Masters Theses
Objectives
The purpose of this field study was to develop an enrichment program for the sixth grade students at Forsyth Grade School. The major areas of concern addressed in this study were:
- to arrive at a working definition of the gifted student.
- to analyze why the 1980-81 6th grade class, and Forsyth students in general, appear to score higher than average on achievement and I.Q. tests.
- to develop a means of identifying gifted students in the areas of math, science, and language arts.
- to assure an enrichment program that would meet the needs of these "gifted" students.
