When determining how successful a student may be as they attempt to navigate higher education after concluding a prison sentence, there are a few factors that need to be considered. Namely, the barriers to college and academic success, as well as the facilitators of success should be examined as many factors fall under these two categories (Donaldson & Viera, 2021). Barriers to higher education and academic success are the determining factors in if a student that has completed an incarceration sentence would enroll in, and complete, courses. Even if this unique population of students has the means to attend college …
Graduate, 2nd Place: Assessing The Knowledge, Attitude, And Everyday Life Practices Adopted Among Eastern Illinois University Students Towards Sustainability, Joel Holison
2023 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents
The concept of sustainable development gained attention and came into focus with the publication of the Brundtland Report (Brundtland, 1987). later the Education for Sustainability (EfS) initiative was presented in 1997 through the “Thessaloniki Declaration” as a carrier of the common and single message (Knapp, 2000). Sustainable development is the way a country pursues its economic development that does not jeopardize the opportunity for future generations to achieve their development (Brundtland, 1987). Deforestation, land destruction, soil degradation, air and water pollution, and other types of environmental deterioration are paid in the name of economic progress. This detriment may outweigh the …

A Cross-Disciplinary Examination Of Institutional Diversity: How University Programs Advance A Diverse Workforce, Joseph Trendowski, Matthew R. Trendowski, Thomas N. Trendowski, Stephanie D. Trendowski, Michael J. Trendowski
Journal of the North American Management Society
Diversity in higher education is encouraged and celebrated throughout many predominant universities across the United States. Institutions of higher learning benefit from diversity in all aspects of campus life; from classes, organizations, or extracurricular activities. Institutional theory is applied to this study to examine how diversity programs are implemented in various university types (national research, private, and state) as well as different settings (educational opportunities, leadership, and accessibility) to develop a qualified and diverse workforce. To achieve this objective, we suggest universities implement a multifaceted approach focusing on initiatives at the university, faculty, and student level.

Diversity Initiative Schemas: Students’ Cognitive Representations Of Managing Diversity On College Campuses, Jeanetta D. Sims, Ashley Neese, Anna Henson, Atoya Sims, Treyce Glidden
Journal of the North American Management Society
Using schemas as a theoretical framework, this paper explores students’ cognitive representations of managing gender and racio-ethnic diversity initiatives on college and university campuses. Exploration of student schemas is necessary to inform higher education administrators of the existing expectations present among students since these expectations interplay with student responses and reactions to diversity management efforts. Using content analysis of students’ narratives, results concerning students’ cognitive representations are offered, and key managerial implications are shared for those in higher education leadership.
Introducing Students To International Business: The Fortune Global 500 Home Country Game, Michael E. Dobbs, Clint Relyea
Introducing Students To International Business: The Fortune Global 500 Home Country Game, Michael E. Dobbs, Clint Relyea
Journal of the North American Management Society
Students taking courses in international business or other courses with international modules within them are frequently less than excited to learn about the material, even though its importance to their future success may be growing quickly. To partially address this issue, we have developed a fun, interactive, competitive exercise based on the Fortune Global 500 to introduce international content to students. Students are asked to identify the home countries of twenty international businesses, some of whose products and services students have most likely used frequently. Participants realize more fully that whether they are cognizant of it or not, they engage …
A Conceptual Model On The Relationship Between Human Resource Strategy And Turnover, Lee L. Hisey, Jude Bumgardner
A Conceptual Model On The Relationship Between Human Resource Strategy And Turnover, Lee L. Hisey, Jude Bumgardner
Journal of the North American Management Society
This paper proposes a conceptual model, explaining the effects of certain reactive or proactive human resource management strategies on an organization’s ability to acquire resources. The purpose of this model is to demonstrate how, in response to dysfunctional turnover, reactive human resource strategies moderate an organization’s ability to acquire resources, while proactive human resource strategies mediate the organization’s ability to acquire resources. The model proposes a moderating effect due to the ineffective strategies of an organization, such as increasing employee work effort in order to compensate for dysfunctional turnover. On the other hand, the model proposes that implementing proactive strategies, …
The Impact Of Media Choice And Social Capital On Quality Improvement, Baiyun Gong, David S. Hoyte, Regina A. Greenwood
The Impact Of Media Choice And Social Capital On Quality Improvement, Baiyun Gong, David S. Hoyte, Regina A. Greenwood
Journal of the North American Management Society
In this paper, we analyze the differences between product and process quality improvement and suggest that the effectiveness of each type of quality improvement is facilitated by distinctive organizational contexts. Specifically, the level of organizational social capital and the richness of communication media are significant determinants of a successful quality improvement approach. Moreover, certain combinations of social capital and media may best fit with either product or process quality improvement. We discuss the possibility of constructing an organizational context that facilitates both types of quality improvement and call for future research to investigate this issue.
The Use And Usefulness Of Social-Network-Site Recruiting, Allison Tharp, David Boggs
The Use And Usefulness Of Social-Network-Site Recruiting, Allison Tharp, David Boggs
Journal of the North American Management Society
Human resources recruiters use many different methods to identify and attract desirable applicants to their organizations. The use of online social networks, such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, for recruiting purposes is one of the newer methods that organizations are using. This paper argues that employees recruited through online social networks are less likely to turnover than average; also, it argues that social networking sites (SNS) decrease the selection cycle time when hiring and are an effective means to recruit passive job candidates. Social recruiting produces the benefits identified by merging the speed of the Internet with the quality and …
Service-Learning As A Practical Approach To Teaching Auditing, Andrew G. Bashore, Matthew A. Phillips
Service-Learning As A Practical Approach To Teaching Auditing, Andrew G. Bashore, Matthew A. Phillips
Journal of the North American Management Society
Business pedagogy can be more effective for students and business through a hands-on, practical approach rather than traditional lectures. The Pathways Commission of the AICPA and AAA recommended we “develop curriculum models, engaging learning resources, and mechanisms for easily sharing them as well as enhancing faculty development opportunities in support of sustaining a robust curriculum” (American Accounting Association 2012 p. 12; Hawawini 2005). In this article, we present a method to teach auditing. We identify a few articles integrating service-learning opportunities into a business school environment (Tonge and Willett 2012; Govekar and Rishi 2007). Our student teams performed agreed-upon procedures …

In addition, referent power positively affects attitudinal compliance and helping OCB whereas referent power negatively influences intention to quit. Moreover, legitimate power negatively affects attitudinal compliance, civic …
Perceived Decision-Making Pressures On Community Bank Chief Executives, William J. Wilhelm, William C. Minnis
Perceived Decision-Making Pressures On Community Bank Chief Executives, William J. Wilhelm, William C. Minnis
Journal of the North American Management Society
The community-banking environment has experienced high levels of stress from increasing regulation, poor loan performance, investment devaluation, lower bank revenues, and public scrutiny during the period since 2008. The CEO decision-making process as a result, receives influence from several stakeholder groups with interests in differing outcomes. The objectives of this research were to identify and rank by importance the most pressing issues that develop decision-making stress among community banking executives. The examination of priorities and concerns facing a selected group of community bank CEOs utilizing an online Delphi method to determine the types of contextual cues (situational variables) that created …
'Not For Ten Million Dollars!’ A Content Analysis Of Medical Tourism Decisions, Elaine Davis, Alvin Yu, Janell Kurtz
'Not For Ten Million Dollars!’ A Content Analysis Of Medical Tourism Decisions, Elaine Davis, Alvin Yu, Janell Kurtz
Journal of the North American Management Society
Multiple drivers are assumed to motivate and factor into decisions to have medical procedures done in another country, regardless of incentive to save money. Content analysis of 114 respondents revealed 13 themes: those actively considering medical tourism, the perceived benefits, nature of procedures, follow-up care, quality of care, cost, safety, insurance, facilities, family support, language barriers, U.S. government policy crisis, and a final category of those who would never consider medical tourism under any circumstances. Implications for HR management of employee health plans and marketing in the hospitality industry are discussed.
Internal Analysis In Practice: Templates For Firm And Case Analysis, Michael E. Dobbs
Internal Analysis In Practice: Templates For Firm And Case Analysis, Michael E. Dobbs
Journal of the North American Management Society
Case analysis is the foundation of business education at many educational institutions. However, there are significant challenges related to the use of cases with particular types of students, in courses with specific structural elements, and with a lack of guidance provided to students. While working with practicing managers, small business owners, and students, I developed a set of templates to aid in the assessment of a firm’s internal workings (to be used in conjunction with other templates addressing environmental, competitor, industry, and other factors). These internal analysis templates provide a structure that is systematic yet adaptable and has improved the …

Critical Thinking Advances The Theory And Practice Of Business Management, Phyllis R. Anderson, Joanne R. Reid
Journal of the North American Management Society
A pedagogical treatment was developed to teach critical thinking knowledge, skills, and strategies to college students. This treatment was implemented at a Midwestern University for a three-year period. Graduates were surveyed to determine the extent to which the treatment affected their personal, academic, and professional lives. Graduates reported that they had transferred the critical thinking knowledge, skills, and strategies they had acquired into their personal, academic, and professional lives. This transfer was validated using qualitative descriptions provided by the graduates of their use of critical thinking.

Corporate Governance And Transparency: A Research Study Investigating Ceo Duality In Fortune Ranked Companies, Patricia B. Abels, Joseph T. Martelli
Journal of the North American Management Society
The fiduciary oversight expected from the board of directors has intensified because of corporate scandals of corruption and fraudulent financial reporting within the US. The Federal Government, Securities and Exchange Commission, American stock exchanges, and shareholders are demanding corporate transparency in these matters. This longitudinal study examines CEO duality of the largest firms in the US as a whole and by industry sector. Concentrating on the agency theory, this paper investigates the two-tier compliance status within the largest 500 firms in the US, as reported by Fortune Magazine in 2008 and 2010. This study seeks to reveal the degree to …

Evaluating Title Vii Exposure In A Manufacturing Setting: A Case Study For Human Resource Management Students, William R. Livingston, Michael F. Peters, Timothy D. Johnson
Journal of the North American Management Society
Since Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 became an established part of the employment legal framework, human resource management professionals and compliance officers have played a vital role in evaluating their companies’ vulnerability to litigation based on perceived violations of Title VII, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the American with Disabilities Act, and other associated equality protection legislation. Factors to be considered include the plaintiff’s burden of proof, legitimate business defenses, and collection and evaluation of reliable data. This case study calls upon human resource management graduate students to evaluate the potential exposure of a defense …
Was Dale Carnegie The Father Of Modern Management?, C. R. Marshall, Robert E. Allen
Was Dale Carnegie The Father Of Modern Management?, C. R. Marshall, Robert E. Allen
Journal of the North American Management Society
As academics, we like to believe that our research leads and informs the best practice of industry. Much of what is taught in college classrooms in business and economics departments is the application of the theoretical work of our colleagues past and present. Three examples of this pattern are Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (Malsow, 1954) Herzberg’s Motivation-Hygiene theory (Herzberg, Mausnar & Snyderman, 1959) and Emotional Intelligence (Salovey & Mayer, 1990, Goleman, 1995). This paper shows that all of these theories were in the popular press years before they were discovered and studied by academics. Each of these theories is at …
Employer And Student Characteristics That Predict Disagreement About College Graduates' Skill Improvement Needs, Lawrence Roth, Richard J. Sebastian, Sohel Ahmed
Employer And Student Characteristics That Predict Disagreement About College Graduates' Skill Improvement Needs, Lawrence Roth, Richard J. Sebastian, Sohel Ahmed
Journal of the North American Management Society
College of business students and representatives of employers likely to recruit them rated the skills "new college graduates most need to improve upon." Although there were high levels of agreement for most of the skills, students' and employers' ratings differed dramatically for "interviewing skills," "lose [the] sense of entitlement," and "realistic expectations." We coded individual differences from the student survey and recruiting strategy and industry differences from the employer survey and then used regression to explore how these variables influenced student and employer ratings. Essentially nothing that occurs on the college campus improved students' ability to identify the problems reported …

Team Performance Study: Determining The Factors That Influence High Performance In Teams, David S. Hoyte, Regina A. Greenwood, Baiyun Gong
Journal of the North American Management Society
The purpose of this paper is to describe a study, in the initial stages, which will attempt to determine the factors that differentiate high performance work teams from teams whose performance is good, but not exceptional. The teams in the study are in the U. S. supplier network of a large global automotive manufacturer. The researchers will use surveys, interviews, and observations to test models that, based on the literature, suggest factors that influence team performance, including innovation as a measure of performance. Multiple perspectives will be employed, including: the strategic lens (structure/ambidexterity), the temporal lens (entrainment) and the organization …
Governors As Ceos: An Evolution, Jennie Carter Thomas, Richard L. Churchman
Governors As Ceos: An Evolution, Jennie Carter Thomas, Richard L. Churchman
Journal of the North American Management Society
This paper examines the emergence of American governors as modern day CEOs from the historical perspective. In the 1960s, the shift in the power of the governorship was beginning, and by the 1970s, the trend toward stronger chief executives was reinforced by various federalism initiatives and the increasing complexity of managing state government. As the 1980s arrived, shifts in federal responsibilities to state governments, economic challenges and competitiveness, increased urbanization, demands for additional services and programs, and accelerating technologies have required a new kind of leadership in the governor’s office. Such leadership requires not only authority, but a managerial expertise …
Using General Systems Theory As A Business Application Paradigm, Vincent O'Rourke
Using General Systems Theory As A Business Application Paradigm, Vincent O'Rourke
Journal of the North American Management Society
General Systems Theory (GST) is reviewed as a paradigm for modeling business applications. The theory has been used and abused for over sixty years, oftentimes the subject of scholarly articles written by authors who felt the need to write, especially as GST was the current ‘flavor of the day’, but who hadn’t reviewed the basic literature to learn what the GST concept actually entailed. The GST concept is reviewed, from its original documents, and the history is explored. A section is devoted to reviewing some of the literature that has been published in scholarly journals or books over the decades, …
Impact Of Mandatory Diversity Training: Lessons From A Private University, Patrick O'Leary, Randy L. Richards, Thomas J. Quinlan Jr.
Impact Of Mandatory Diversity Training: Lessons From A Private University, Patrick O'Leary, Randy L. Richards, Thomas J. Quinlan Jr.
Journal of the North American Management Society
Attendance at diversity training programs is often dictated by management, and participants find themselves caught between their genuine desire to broaden their understanding of the subject and resentment at being forced to do so. The outcomes of these mandatory training programs have not been systematically assessed. This study looks at the cognitive, attitudinal, and behavioral impacts of attending such a program and finds valuable lessons learned and cautious room for optimism.
Student Versus Employer Perceptions Of College Graduate Skills, Lawrence Roth, Sohel Ahmad, Richard J. Sebastian
Student Versus Employer Perceptions Of College Graduate Skills, Lawrence Roth, Sohel Ahmad, Richard J. Sebastian
Journal of the North American Management Society
College of business students who soon will graduate and representatives of employers likely to recruit them rated the skills “most important for [job] candidates to possess” and the skills "new college graduates most need to improve upon." Students' ratings for important to possess skills closely mirrored those of employers, demonstrating that efforts to teach students about employer preferences had been successful. Students' ratings of the skills most needing improvement differed dramatically from employers' ratings. Most critically, students rated "interviewing skills" as most in need of improvement whereas employers rated this in the middle range and employers rated "realistic expectations" and …
