While social-networking sites like Facebook are still relatively new to the working world, employers monitoring their employee’s activities and conduct outside the workplace is not. The most alluring aspects of social-networking sites is the ease in which an account can be created and maintained, the personalization options they present to the user, and a uniquely 21st century way of keeping in contact with friends and family. Social-networking sites are truly a wonder of the modern age, where by typing out a few sentences, uploading some photographs, videos and making some friend requests, one can present his or her entire life …

Linda Hogan: “Women Watching Over The World”, Lind Hogan
Linda Hogan: “Women Watching Over The World”, Lind Hogan
Transformations 2011-2012
"Linda Hogan can teach us a generous vision of nature. In her poems, novels, stories, and nonfiction, she shows a love of the created order that exists not at the expense of love of humanity, but as a fuller expression of that love. To be human, according to her vision, is to be situated on the planet, and to be sensitive to its moods, its angles, its secrets, and its kinds of life—animal, vegetable, and even mineral. Hogan possesses the skill of standing in awe of the earth’s mysteries, a sensitivity to the grace present in nature. Her language—careful, polished, …

Size Assortment In Mixed-Species Groups Of Juvenile-Phase Striped Parrotfish (Scarus Iserti) In The Bahamas, Paul Switzer, Daniel Quinn
Size Assortment In Mixed-Species Groups Of Juvenile-Phase Striped Parrotfish (Scarus Iserti) In The Bahamas, Paul Switzer, Daniel Quinn
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Striped parrotfish (Scarus iserti) often form heterospecific groups with other reef fishes. In this study, we examined the species and body size composition of these groups on reefs in The Bahamas. Groups averaged approximately 4 S. iserti and 2 associated species, with surgeonfish (Acanthurus chirurgus and A. bahianus), slippery dick (Halichoeres bivittatus), and bluehead wrasse (Thalassoma bifasciatum) as the most common associates. Fewer groups than expected had only 1 associate; groups with 3 or more associates were more common than expected. Both the S. iserti and associated species tended to be closely sizematched within a group, perhaps due to benefits …

This study assessed whether and how self-explanation reading training, provided by iSTART (Interactive Strategy Training for Active Reading and Thinking), improves the effectiveness of comprehension processes. iSTART teaches students how to self-explain and which strategies will most effectively aid comprehension from moment-to-moment. We used RSAT (Reading Strategy Assessment Tool) to assess how iSTART changes the relation between important selfexplanation reading strategies—bridging and elaboration—and online comprehension, and how often they are produced. College and high school students received iSTART and were administered RSAT prior to and post-training. Results from three experiments showed that iSTART primarily benefits bridging inferences when self explaining. …

About the Symposium
A Futuristic Look Through Ancient Lenses: Greece explored ancient Greece through the eyes of many of Eastern Illinois University's scholars. Academics spoke and led discussions on a variety of topics that have emerged from ancient thoughts and are still of interest today.
The symposium brought together the Eastern community and residents of the area to explore the future by learning about the past. This was the second symposium in the series, following the study of Ancient Egypt in the fall of 2011. …

The Role Of Vegetarian Options In Campus Dining: Acceptability Of Vegetarian Burgers, James D. Roche
The Role Of Vegetarian Options In Campus Dining: Acceptability Of Vegetarian Burgers, James D. Roche
Masters Theses
Although there are many healthy varieties of meats and sustainable methods of raising livestock, there are still environmental and health concerns regarding meat production and consumption. This study examines the acceptability of garden burgers as a replacement for beef burgers in a university dining center by comparing appearance, taste and overall acceptability of these two products. The study also looked to determine whether there were any differences in sensory ratings for the vegetarian burgers between different genders and participants with varying levels of exposure to vegetarian burgers.
