Long-Term Survival Of Anoxia Despite Rapid Atp Decline In Embryos Of The Annual Killifish Austrofundulus Limnaeus, Jason E. Podrabsky, Michael A. Menze, Steven C. Hand
Long-Term Survival Of Anoxia Despite Rapid Atp Decline In Embryos Of The Annual Killifish Austrofundulus Limnaeus, Jason E. Podrabsky, Michael A. Menze, Steven C. Hand
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Embryos of the annual killifish Austrofundulus limnaeus can survive for months in the complete absence of oxygen. Survival of anoxia is associated with entry into a state of metabolic dormancy known as diapause. However, extreme tolerance of anoxia is retained for several days of post-diapause development. Rates of heat dissipation in diapause II and 4 days post-diapause II embryos were measured under aerobic conditions and during the transition into anoxia. Phosphorylated adenylate compounds were quantified in embryos during entry into anoxia and after 12 hr of aerobic recovery. Rates of heat dissipation were not affected by exposure to anoxia in …

Does Terrain Slope Really Dominate Goal Searching?, Daniele Nardi
Does Terrain Slope Really Dominate Goal Searching?, Daniele Nardi
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
If you can locate a target by using one reliable source of information, why would you use an unreliable one? A similar question has been faced in a recent study on homing pigeons, in which, despite the presence of better predictors of the goal location, the slope of the floor in an arena dominated the searching process. This piece of evidence seems to contradict straightforward accounts of associative learning, according to which behavior should be controlled by the stimulus that best predicts the reward, and has fueled interest toward one question that, to date, has received scarce attention in the …

"Sewing A Safety Net: Scarborough's Maritime Community, 1747-1765", Charles Foy
"Sewing A Safety Net: Scarborough's Maritime Community, 1747-1765", Charles Foy
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
From 1747 to 1765 Scarborough created a safety net to keep its maritime dependents from becoming impoverished. A web of kinship connections that permitted sailors to move between land and sea as well as between maritime roles as they aged; the employment of maritime servants; the extensive hiring of elderly seamen; the use of the Seamen’s Sixpence after legislative reform in 1747 to develop locally operated seamen’s hospitals for the benefit of sailors and their families; and strong community support of the hospitals worked together to provide a social safety net that was, by eighteenth century standards, robust and effective.

“And They Call Pennsylvania A Blue State?”, Pat Heilman
“And They Call Pennsylvania A Blue State?”, Pat Heilman
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
By now, most academicians are aware of the assaults on academic freedom as contained in the Academic Bill of Rights (ABOR) legislation introduced, in some form, in some 24 states. Part of a national movement to muzzle professors deemed too liberal for our colleges and universities, this witch hunt, instigated by former liberal radical David Horowitz, has had a chilling effect on campuses. Some faculty organizations are fighting back; APSCUF (Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties), a union representing some 5,500 faculty and coaches in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), is one of them. This …
Genome Wide Analysis Of Hepatic Gene Silencing In Mammalian Cell Variants, Jeffrey L. Kurkewich
Genome Wide Analysis Of Hepatic Gene Silencing In Mammalian Cell Variants, Jeffrey L. Kurkewich
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Using microarray data, a genome wide analysis of hepatic gene-silencing in four hepatoma variant cell lines was carried out. The purpose of this analysis was to identify candidate genes that may be able to restore liver function in non-functional cell variants, ultimately giving insight into the mechanisms behind global hepatic gene expression. Based on a selection scheme allowing only for genes activated or repressed at least 5 fold in 2 out of the 4 variant cell lines, 225 genes were found to be repressed while a total of 76 genes were found to be activated. Of the repressed genes identified, …

Comics For Children?, Elizabeth Surbeck
Comics For Children?, Elizabeth Surbeck
2012 Awards for Excellence in Student Research & Creative Activity - Documents
Graphic narratives around the world have found lhemselves today beirlg read by certain types of readers. Literature scholars focus on elements such as character and plot structure, occupying their minds with what makes literature great and what some graphic nurratives share with that great literature. With a similar attitude, art historians focus on style, composition, and other artistic elements in graphic narratives that connect them to the art history timeline that goes back to cave paintings. Another type of audience exists, one that does not consider what graphic narratives are and whether they belong to an existing formal area …

Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Genomics and bioinformatics are topics of increasing interest in undergraduate biological science curricula. Many existing exercises focus on gene annotation and analysis of a single genome. In this paper, we present two educational modules designed to enable students to learn and apply fundamental concepts in comparative genomics using examples related to bacterial pathogenesis. Students first examine alignments of genomes of Escherichia coli O157:H7 strains isolated from three food-poisoning outbreaks using the multiple-genome alignment tool Mauve. Students investigate conservation of virulence factors using the Mauve viewer and by browsing annotations available at the A Systematic Annotation Package for Community Analysis of …
Effects Of Hot Water On Breaking Seed Dormancy Of The Endangered Kankakee Mallow (Iliamna Remota Greene (Malvaceae), April Mcdonnell, Marissa Grant, Janice M. Coons
Effects Of Hot Water On Breaking Seed Dormancy Of The Endangered Kankakee Mallow (Iliamna Remota Greene (Malvaceae), April Mcdonnell, Marissa Grant, Janice M. Coons
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Iliamna remota Greene (Kankakee mallow, Malvaceae) is listed as endangered in Illinois and is endemic to Langham Island in the Kankakee River, Kankakee County, Illinois. Information on ways to break seed dormancy of I. remota would be useful for restoration and management. The purpose of this study was to determine if hot water at different temperatures and for different lengths of time would break seed dormancy. Seeds were dipped for 60 seconds into water at 70, 80, 90 or 100 degrees C with 22 degrees C dips as a control. In another trial, seeds were dipped into 80 degrees C …

Graduate Alumnus: Outstanding Graduate Alumni Awards - Class Of 2012, Graduate School Of Eastern Illinois University
Graduate Alumnus
Since 1951 Eastern has offered advanced study
with master’s programming. Since that first
offering thousands of students have earned
graduate degrees, and EIU graduate alumni
have changed the world we live in. In 2005
EIU celebrated more than 50 years of graduate
education by honoring 50 graduate alumni
as Outstanding Graduate Alumni. That same
year the Graduate Alumni Advisory Board was
created and met for the first time. Since those
initial 50 honorees, the Graduate Alumni
Advisory Board, the Graduate School, and EIU’s
graduate programs have continued to honor
the achievements and accomplishments of our
graduate alumni every year.
