Designing Hmi And Scada Laboratory Work For Engineering Students, Julianne Barteck
Designing Hmi And Scada Laboratory Work For Engineering Students, Julianne Barteck
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Human-machine interfaces are, essentially, the user interfaces used to monitor industrial facility machines and systems, which makes them a common industry tool in engineering. At East Tennessee State University, while human-machine interfaces are briefly covered in lecture and graduate students have set up some basic hands-on work, there exist no formal lab work for students on the topic. This thesis explores the literature surrounding the design of labs for a STEM or engineering-specific university class, and applies the recommendations and methods within that literature to design two laboratory guides on human-machine interfaces. These labs are intended to be implemented in …
Considerations Regarding The Accountant Shortage, Accounting Student Recruitment, And Efforts To Mitigate The Ongoing Shortage, Kellen T. Hixon
Considerations Regarding The Accountant Shortage, Accounting Student Recruitment, And Efforts To Mitigate The Ongoing Shortage, Kellen T. Hixon
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The accounting profession is currently facing a well-documented talent shortage that has been building for a number of years. Some of the factors leading to this are fewer students choosing accounting because of higher wages in other careers as well as many CPAs retiring in the coming years. This paper considers the challenges of getting students in the door to accounting and examines the reasons why they are not choosing accounting. It also examines what accounting firms are doing to fight the workforce shortage, gains the perspective of state CPA societies on the 150 hour rule and how it is …
Redeemed: A Dance Composition And Analysis On Transformation, Kasia D. Oliver
Redeemed: A Dance Composition And Analysis On Transformation, Kasia D. Oliver
Undergraduate Honors Theses
I have created a film entitled Redeemed, which utilizes the medium of dance to explore emotional devastation and restoration present throughout life. My experience as a kinesiology major with an exercise science concentration, dance minor, and fine and performing arts student at East Tennessee State University from 2021-2025 has ignited my desire to connect kinesthetic awareness, somatic movement, dance choreography, and improvisation in a way that is cathartic for both me as the choreographer/performer and the audience. My goal is to touch viewers on a soul level by embodying how it feels to truly and fully exist. This film consists …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the perceptions of principals, assistant principals, and supervisors in the strategic use of web-based instructional tools to facilitate learning in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade English Language Arts. The study focused on administrators and supervisors in one district in Tennessee because these educational leaders observe classroom teachers regularly through the Tennessee Educator Acceleration Model.
Data collection strategies included semi-structured individual interviews with 12 educators who are in administrative or supervisor roles within the school district. Analysis of data occurred by transcription of interviews, member checking, and coding. The researcher then identified …
Drinking Out Of The Fire Hydrant: Educators’ Perceptions Of Well-Being In A Teacher Preparation Program, Corey P. Wolfe
Drinking Out Of The Fire Hydrant: Educators’ Perceptions Of Well-Being In A Teacher Preparation Program, Corey P. Wolfe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The process of becoming a teacher is complex, multi-layered, and often high-stakes. Teacher preparation programs are designed to equip prospective teachers with the foundational skills and knowledge needed for a successful teaching career. In addition to pursuing the academic degree in education, future teachers must meet credentialing and licensure expectations. Because of these expectations, novice teachers are often met with profound feelings of stress and anxiety. The purpose of this research exploration was designed to investigate elementary educators’ perceptions of well-being during their senior year in a pre-service teacher preparation program. Using a qualitative research design, six educators were interviewed …

Assessing The Utilization Of Building Information Modelling (Bim) In The Preservation Of Cultural Heritage: A Case Study Of Ashe-Street Courthouse, Boluwatife Oluwamakinde
Dr. Jay W. Boland Research Day
This study examines how Building Information Modeling (BIM) was used in the Ashe Street Courthouse restoration, with an emphasis on how it contributes to heritage preservation. The study employs a case study methodology, following a systematic four-step approach: an initial review of relevant literature and historical records, semi-structured interviews with architects involved in the renovation, and analysis of project documentation. The study assesses the accuracy of documentation, the enhancement of collaboration and coordination among stakeholders, and the efficiency and time savings enabled by BIM by comparing BIM to conventional techniques. Results show that BIM allows for real-time adjustments while maintaining …
Conceptions Of Ghosts In Renaissance England, Elizabeth Jaques
Conceptions Of Ghosts In Renaissance England, Elizabeth Jaques
Dr. Jay W. Boland Research Day
Literature, treatises, and theatrical plays disclose information about the cultural concept of ghosts in Renaissance England. Shakespeare’s Hamlet provides an exemplary examination of the attributes given to ghosts. Hamlet conveys the following characteristics: ghosts can communicate, appear at night, have the form of the deceased, appear to a person known in life, died in violent manners, and were labelled as “ghosts.” Other plays, treatises, and other similar documents from the period share these characteristics, reflecting broader societal belief. By examining these sources, deeper insight can be gained into the beliefs and attitudes of people from Renaissance England regarding ghosts. Furthermore, …

Community-Engaged Learning In Geosciences At "Erwin Fish Hatchery", Rezaul Bari Ishan
Dr. Jay W. Boland Research Day
Since 2017, ETSU Principles of Hydrology course has included a 5-6 week-long field research project that engages students in an authentic field research experience with community partners. Building on this tradition, in October 2024, geosciences students from ETSU partnered with the Erwin National Fish Hatchery to meet the hatchery’s need for a detailed water quality assessment. They focused on two natural springs—critical water sources for hatchery operations—examining their hydrologic behavior and water quality, specifically whether they share an origin and how rainfall influences turbidity. Using ISCO water samplers, YSI probes, water level loggers, and turbidity meters, students tracked water levels …
In Vivo Evaluation Of Cromolyn Sodium Topical Gels For The Treatment Of Atopic Dermatitis, Adela Adu Agyemang
In Vivo Evaluation Of Cromolyn Sodium Topical Gels For The Treatment Of Atopic Dermatitis, Adela Adu Agyemang
Dr. Jay W. Boland Research Day
Cromolyn sodium (CS) is a mast cell stabilizer used for asthma and mastocytosis, with potential for treating atopic dermatitis (AD). Despite clinical support for its efficacy in AD, no commercial CS formulations are available. This study assessed the efficacy of a formulated CS gel for AD through in vivo testing in a mice model, comparing it to a topical corticosteroid. Two 4% CS gels were formulated using sodium oleate and sodium caprylate as enhancers. Hydroxypropyl cellulose (1.5%) was the gelling agent, and propylene glycol served as the base. In vitro permeation studies (24 h, porcine ear skin, 37°C) showed that …
Adoption Communicative Openness, Hannah Araba Baidoo
Adoption Communicative Openness, Hannah Araba Baidoo
Dr. Jay W. Boland Research Day
Adoption communicative openness refers to dialogue about adoption related issues between adoptive parents and their adopted child. It is through this form of communication that adoptive parents provide adoptees with information about their birth family, answer the adoptee’s questions, and explore other adoption related issues, and as a result aids in the psychological well-being of adoptees as they age. While it is important and beneficial for adoptees’ development, existing research has demonstrated the importance of adoption communicative openness (ACO) from the perspective of the parent in the interest of the adopted child without inquiring from the perspective of the adoptive …
