The Organization Of The Ministry In The First Century Of The Church, Charles Russell Whittington Jun 1959

The Organization Of The Ministry In The First Century Of The Church, Charles Russell Whittington

Bachelor of Divinity

In order that the Church might know the possibilities, it is good to delve into the past and examine the methods of the Church which have been used through the centuries. A critical examination of the various organizations or the Church in history will result in ideas which may bear fruit in application to the situation of the Church in the modern world.

It is with a view to initiating such a study that I offer this investigation of the organization of the ministry in the New Testament and in the earliest of the Church Fathers. Unfortunately, the period allowed …

The Concept Of Chastisement In The Book Of Hebrews, Carl Lutz Jr

Bachelor of Divinity

As a result of personal contact with several cases in which the purpose and nature of Christian suffering was misinterpreted by the individual, one is led to study the Bible very carefully in order to offer all of the hope and comfort which God has placed into this Holy Book for His faithful followers. The present study is so constructed as to lead a person to discover the many ways in which he might offer consolation and encouragement to a person who is suffering some form of chastisement from God, specifically employing the Epistle to the Hebrews to the given …

Children And The Church's Worship, George Hoyer

The Formation Of The United Church Of Canada, Milton H. Riemer

Bachelor of Divinity

After twenty-five years of negotiations between the Methodist, Congregational, and Presbyterian Churches of Canada, the organic union of these three bodies into The United Church of Canada was consummated on June 10, 1925. This thesis shall deal primarily with the twenty-five years preceding the union. Of necessity we shall have to look briefly at the present-day characteristics of The United Church of Canada if we wish to arrive at any conclusions regarding the success or failure of the venture. Furthermore, since this is to be primarily an historical presentation, there are large areas regarding these twenty-five years before union which …

The Role Of The Lutheran Pastor In Dealing With The Problem Of Alcoholism, Harold Gene Hermetz Jun 1958

The Role Of The Lutheran Pastor In Dealing With The Problem Of Alcoholism, Harold Gene Hermetz

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to survey the problem of alcoholism in the light of present-day developments in an effort to determine the role the Lutheran pastor may play in effectively dealing with the alcoholics with whom his ministry brings him into contact. It is becoming increasingly evident that one of the greatest needs of the minister is a definition of his role in this problem--a clear picture of where he is needed and in what areas he can serve most effectively. There is little doubt that the parish pastor will have opportunities to deal with alcoholics since such …

Some of the questions this study attempts to answer include the following. What does God's Word teach concerning sickness? What is the cause and purpose of sickness? Is euthanasia right or wrong? Principles Of Counseling, Henry L. Lieske Oct 1953

Principles Of Counseling, Henry L. Lieske

Concordia Theological Monthly

Pastoral counseling is currently receiving much greater emphasis in the seminary curriculum than was the case a decade or two ago. This does not mean that effective pastoral counseling has been carried on only recently. Throughout the ages the "cure," or care, of souls has been a matter of vital concern to the Church and its pastors.

The Pastoral Care Of Neurotis, C. Adam Aug 1953

The Pastoral Care Of Neurotis, C. Adam

Concordia Theological Monthly

Neurosis is one of the most common forms of behavior abnormality. The easy explanation which placed the blame on heredity is losing ground. Recent studies show that environmental strains and pressures as well as unfavorable childhood experiences are receiving greater emphasis as causative factors. Most people are unaware of the nature of their conflict. They only know the symptoms: frustration, unhappiness, obsessions, strange compulsions, fears that they cannot account for, ailments that seem to have no physical basis. In most cases these emotional difficulties do not stop people from doing their work nor from carrying on their social activities. Yet …

Concordia Seminary of St. Louis has initiated a course of its own which is deeply rooted …

Human Will In Bondage And Freedom, A Study In Luther's Distinction Of Law And Gospel. (Part I.), F. E. Mayer Oct 1951

Human Will In Bondage And Freedom, A Study In Luther's Distinction Of Law And Gospel. (Part I.), F. E. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Luther's re-discovery of the proper distinction between Law and Gospel may be viewed as the starting point of the Lutheran reformation. The proper distinction between these two doctrines is the heart and core of Lutheran theology, or in the words of the Formula of Concord, Art. V, "the specially brilliant light which has come to us through the Reformation." Where this distinction is properly observed, the Scriptures will be correctly explained and understood; conversely, where these two doctrines are mingled, the merits of Christ are obscured, and the Christian is robbed of his comfort. The Lutheran Reformation may be viewed …
