Towards An Understanding Of And Pastoral Approach To The Potential Suicide, Allan Bruck
Towards An Understanding Of And Pastoral Approach To The Potential Suicide, Allan Bruck
Bachelor of Divinity
That suicide is such a destructive force in the lives of men is reason enough to undertake a serious study of this problem. For the pastor, however, there is a more impelling reason for such study: in his pastoral ministry, the clergyman will be confronted by the potential suicide and will be forced to influence his course of action, either for the better or for the worse. This paper would serve as an introduction to the problem of suicide, and, hopefully; as a motivation for further pastoral study.
The Church's Approach To Death And The Funeral, William Matzat
The Church's Approach To Death And The Funeral, William Matzat
Master of Divinity Thesis
This paper, therefore, will attempt to point out the approach which the church should take regarding the various cultural practices prevalent in the American funeral rite. After a brief historical perspective, it will examine the theological concepts of the body, death and the resurrection, and the psychological concepts of grief and mourning. With this as a basis for analysis, some of the cultural practices of the American funeral rite will be considered.
Reading Programs In Theology: An Overview Of Pastoral Care, Harry G. Coiner, David S. Schuller
Reading Programs In Theology: An Overview Of Pastoral Care, Harry G. Coiner, David S. Schuller
Concordia Theological Monthly
In the midst of the intensifying "explosion of knowledge," the speed with which cultural changes are taking place, and an increased number of specialists, clergymen now are keenly aware of the need for continued professional growth. Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, is attempting to meet part of this need. The ideal answer, of course, lies in intensive retraining in terms of graduate programs, summer school study, and quarter-long sabbaticals from the parish for concentrated study. Regional institutes and workshops offer another level of educational experience.

Denominational churches appear to be marked by an interesting confessional rhythm. The one pattern is that of "withdrawal," in which the confessional basis becomes increasingly narrow until the Biblical message may actually be officially excluded from its preaching and teaching. If this rhythm runs its full course, death must be the result. The other rhythm is that of "return," in which the confessional basis of the denomination becomes increasingly broad. It may even go so far beyond Scriptural teaching that the denomination will find room for a "death of God" theologian in its pulpit. (See the Theological Observer in this …
Theological Discussion And The Responsibility Of The Church, Richard L. Jeske
Theological Discussion And The Responsibility Of The Church, Richard L. Jeske
Concordia Theological Monthly
One is easily reminded of the often heard lament during seminary days, ''Why should I have to study about 'Q'? All I want to be is a simple parish pastor!" Sometimes this "simple parish pastor'" who has avoided hard theological work at the seminary emerges as the most vigorous critic of contemporary theology shortly after his graduation.
The Place Of The Family In The Church's Educational Ministry, Oscar E. Feucht
The Place Of The Family In The Church's Educational Ministry, Oscar E. Feucht
Concordia Theological Monthly
Parents are the child's most potent teachers. They provide the all-important environment. Good manners, good English, love of good books and music, life's ideals, in fact, the whole outlook on the world are developed largely in the home. And so are dislikes and prejudices, religious views as well as political views, habits of going to church, of receiving Holy Communion, of prayer and reading the Bible. The paths which adult feet travel find their origin in childhood, and one way is as likely to be traveled as another, if started upon in the preschool days.
The Constitutive Nature Of A Christian Marriage And Its Application Toward Pastoral Practice In A Remarriage Situation, Walter Koehler
The Constitutive Nature Of A Christian Marriage And Its Application Toward Pastoral Practice In A Remarriage Situation, Walter Koehler
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
It is the thesis of this paper that there is a further dimension of love and faith which is operative among Christian spouses within their marriage relationship by virtue of their relationship to God in Christ Jesus that warrants the appellation “Christian marriage" in the fullest sense of the term. The term "marriage" will be understood in this paper within the context and dimension of this distinctive feature.
Preaching And The Recovery Of The Church, Richard R. Caemmerer
Preaching And The Recovery Of The Church, Richard R. Caemmerer
Concordia Theological Monthly
In the first section, we dealt with the language of preaching. Can it be understood? Does God speak and act in it? In the second we dealt with the method of finding and conveying Biblical truth in preaching. Have current Biblical studies a contribution to make to the pastor as he sets about on his task of preparing and delivering sermons? The third article does not turn away from these questions and processes, but it locates them in their setting: the Christian church. Ours is a time of rediscovery of the meaning of the church.

Many forces are at work in our society today which combine to make personal interest an abiding motivation. The pleasing art of being social has assumed the doubtful coloration of the slick professional impersonality. People seem to become "involved" with people only "in a role" and not in a personal and meaningful way, not so their "heart feels it;” as we say. The drive for individualism is bred into us from our American heritage, and we have become a breed of people skilled in the devices of keeping away from people while living with them and working with them and …
The Ecumenical Century And The Parish, Alvin N. Rogness
The Ecumenical Century And The Parish, Alvin N. Rogness
Concordia Theological Monthly
I am not audacious enough to think that I can say anything new or solve any of the many problems which our day enforces upon us. I hope I may call into focus some of the issues that face us now and others that assuredly will be upon us in acute shape in the years ahead. At the outset I want in all candor to say that I am more terrified than exhilarated by the ministry which my son and his generation must face in the next 40 years. And it follows that I must confess that I have no …
Theological Education And The Special Ministries, C. Thomas Spitz
Theological Education And The Special Ministries, C. Thomas Spitz
Concordia Theological Monthly
There have been two major developments in the recent history of theological education in America which have been of special interest to the special ministries. Both have been stimulated greatly by the agonizing reappraisal and introspection in which most theological schools and denominational departments of theological education have been engaged regarding their purpose, function, and curricula.

The Fieldwork Program At Concordia Seminary, Kenneth H. Breimeier
The Fieldwork Program At Concordia Seminary, Kenneth H. Breimeier
Concordia Theological Monthly
In a sense, there has always been fieldwork at Concordia Seminary. Ever since the beginning of the school, students have been preaching, teaching, and generally exercising the skills of the pastoral ministry. In another sense, the beginning of the fieldwork program might be reckoned from the inauguration of the required year of vicarage, or internship. In the early 1930s Synod asked the class that would have returned for its senior year to stay out for one year to work in the parish.

Changes In The Concept Of Pastoral Care Following A Hospital Training Experience, Wilbur Barnett
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This study was undertaken to determine 1) what concepts students at the seminary hold toward pastoral care and how strongly these are held, and 2) what is the efficacy of the seminary’s pastoral care training experience.
The Social Worker And The Pastor As A Team, Ruth Wiederaenders
The Social Worker And The Pastor As A Team, Ruth Wiederaenders
Concordia Theological Monthly
In approaching the topic of the teamwork of a pastor and a social worker in meeting a particular need of a Christian, we must first treat the concept of teamwork to determine the possibilities of any action being performed. Webster defines teamwork as "joint action by a group of people, in which each person subordinates his individual interests and opinions to the unity and efficiency of the group; coordinated effort." The group or the team is specified as "a group of people working or playing together, especially as one side in a contest."

Divorce And Remarriage, Harry G. Coiner
Divorce And Remarriage, Harry G. Coiner
Concordia Theological Monthly
The written discussion which has centered around Matthew 5:31, 32; 19:9; Mark 10: 11, 12; Luke 16: 18; and 1 Corinthians 7:12-16 is certainly voluminous, sometimes biased, mostly tentative. It is our conviction that much of the labor expended through the years in an effort to develop a modus operandi for dealing with divorce and remarriage has resulted in more ambiguous conclusions than certain ones. It is also our conviction that these passages need to be studied anew by our Lutheran Church. In no area of pastoral care is there more need for clear doctrine and practice.
The Psychological Disciplines In Theological Education, Paul W. Pruyser
The Psychological Disciplines In Theological Education, Paul W. Pruyser
Concordia Theological Monthly
Much has been written during the last decade about the relevance of certain aspects of psychology and psychiatry to the professional role and work of ministers. When one surveys the massive literature which has been produced in this area of concern one is impressed at first by great topical variety. which ranges from theological critiques of psychological concepts and theories to pastoral counseling; from the psychological screening of candidates for the ministry to how pastors might deal with grief; from life situation preaching to techniques of supervision in clinical pastoral training courses.

The Devotional Use Of The Bible, James G. Manz
The Devotional Use Of The Bible, James G. Manz
Concordia Theological Monthly
Our topic suggests that there is another use of the Holy Bible. This is the study of Holy Scripture which is traditionally associated with the discipline of theological seminaries and the work of Biblical scholars and ministers. Its technical term is exegesis and has as its task to get out of the sacred text what God put into it. To achieve its purpose an exegetical study of Scripture involves knowledge of the ancient tongues. Martin Luther had a high regard for that language study which had as its aim the understanding of the meaning of the Scripture. He said, "As …

The First Fifty Years Of The History Of The Igreja Evangelica Lutherana Do Brazil, The Brazilian District Of The Missouri Synod, Mario Rehfeldt

The present study is an attempt to describe and to analyze the main developments of the work of the Missouri Synod in Brazil during the first half of the twentieth century, from the beginning of its missionary- work in Brazil in 1900 to 1950.
The Nature Of Spiritual Illness, William Edward Hulme
The Nature Of Spiritual Illness, William Edward Hulme
Concordia Theological Monthly
Our purpose this morning is to describe the nature of spiritual illness, a theological perspective of the person - as this person lives in our kind of world. All of us are sick to a degree, and so, when I talk about the nature of spiritual illness, I believe that you will see yourself in some of the things I say. In a sense, then, we are holding up a mirror. Since we have such a glorious answer to the spiritual illness this need not be the cause for despair as it would be if we had not the good …

The Role Of The Christian Pastor Today, William K. Hannusch
The Role Of The Christian Pastor Today, William K. Hannusch
Bachelor of Divinity
The burden of everyday living has been made more pleasant and easier. So also, scientific research is having its effect on the role of the Christian pastor. It is giving him tools with which to work and to obtain better results. This is true not only in making use of machines and methods for the office, but especially in working with, and handling the human personality.

The Reformation Movement In Estonia, Heino Olavi Kadai
The Reformation Movement In Estonia, Heino Olavi Kadai
Bachelor of Divinity
It is hoped that the thesis at hand is not welcomed only because it adds to the completeness of Reformation research in the English language. The study of the Reformation movement in Estonia will help to demonstrate the fact that the Great Reformation, as Lutherans like to think of the Lutheran Reformation, spread in many different ways and moved by diverse roads, not always following the same pattern in every territory. As the study will bear out, the Reformation movement in Estonia carried many characteristics of its own that differ greatly from the development of the Reformation in Germany, Sweden, …
Law-Gospel-Oriented Preaching In Martin Luther's Theology Of Preaching, Chul Hwan Kim
Law-Gospel-Oriented Preaching In Martin Luther's Theology Of Preaching, Chul Hwan Kim
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The Goal of this thesis is to study Luther's theology of preaching. As we have already seen above, the first chapter outlines the world of Luther's preaching. The second chapter explores Luther's preaching, focusing on his specific concern for preaching. In it, we can see that Luther regards preaching as the oral Word of God. Luther believes God is speaking when the preacher preaches. This chapter will show us that Luther's understanding of preaching is concentrated upon the Lord, Christ who is the content of Gospel.
