A Growing Commonality Among Lutherans?, Andrew J. White
A Growing Commonality Among Lutherans?, Andrew J. White
Concordia Theological Monthly
A statistical report from the Office of LCUSA shows that as of February 1970 there were 50 pan-Lutheran councils and conferences of various sorts in operation, representing 27 states, and another 39 in the process of formation, including 6 additional states. The great majority of these councils have come into existence in major metropolitan centers.
Hermeneutics And The Teacher Of Theology, Edgar Krentz
Hermeneutics And The Teacher Of Theology, Edgar Krentz
Concordia Theological Monthly
After discussing the use and meaning of the term “Hermeneutics," the author explores both the historical and the critical dimensions necessary in contemporary Biblical study and shows how teachers of theology, their students, and pastors can derive great benefits from such historical-critical studies of the sacred Scriptures.
Joseph Smith, Defender Of The Faith, Robert N. Hullinger
Joseph Smith, Defender Of The Faith, Robert N. Hullinger
Concordia Theological Monthly
A reassessment of Joseph Smith on the basis of how the Book of Mormon reflects the cultural context in which Smith lived leads the author to understand Smith as one who attempted to defend authentic Christian faith at his time and in his environment.
Early Israel As The Kingdom Of Yahweh, Albert E. Glock
Early Israel As The Kingdom Of Yahweh, Albert E. Glock
Concordia Theological Monthly
Archaeological evidence indicates that early Israel as the kingdom of Yahweh functioned on the analogy of Ancient Near Eastern vassal states. In the religion of Early Israel both law and warfare were vehicles for the extension of Yahweh's covenant rule.

The Lectionary And The Church Year: A Study Of The Historic Lectionary Of The Western Church Leading To A Revised Gospel Lectionary, Karl Cron
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The goal of the study is to provide a modest starting point for a revised lectionary with understandable, meaningful and relevant lessons that relate to one another and that are organized in a church year pattern which is helpful to the worshiper's devotion. Of course, the lectionary itself cannot overcome the human factors of inattentiveness, lethargy, and disinterest. More than a lectionary is required to overcome these factors.

Methods In Studying The Biblical Text Today, John Reumann
Methods In Studying The Biblical Text Today, John Reumann
Concordia Theological Monthly
A rich variety of methods exists today for studying Scripture - text criticism, philology, literary criticism; source, form, and redaction criticism, Religionsgeschichte, and a host of other "Geschichten" - so that the Bible is probably the world's most closely and minutely studied book. But how can all these techniques be put together into a method, in the classical sense of meth' hodos, a "way" "after" something, a way for getting from one point to another, from the text to the practical goal that concerns us here, proclaiming or communicating the text today?

The History Of Radio Station Kfuo 1954 To 1969, Roger R. Kahle
The History Of Radio Station Kfuo 1954 To 1969, Roger R. Kahle
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of this research paper is two-fold. First, I hope to bring together significant source material for future historical analyses of Radio Station KFUO during the years 1954-1969. Hence, this paper is accompanied by a bulky Appendix, that reproduces the significant historical documents, and by a detailed Bibliobraphy, noting the location of additional materials. Second, this time period was selected both because scanty historical study has been focussed on it heretofore, and because 1954-1969 is the tenure of KFUO's second General Manager. The events that occurred during this time period have significantly altered the historical motion of KFUO and …
General Lutheran History In America, Curtiss Brooks Barby
General Lutheran History In America, Curtiss Brooks Barby
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This study is an attempt to consider the basic philosophical tenets which guided general Lutheran history in America, as well as the historiographical concerns used to support these tenets. According to Abdel Ross Wentz, there are two ·areas of source material which might be considered for such an attempt. The first area concentrates on a group of works which is very large. It includes a complete list of volumes and pamphlets dealing with the various aspects and details of the Lutheran Church in America. If this source was used, it would embrace some thirty thousand titles.
A Comparative Study Of The Prolegomena In Karl Barth's Christliche Dogmatik Of 1927 And The Kirchliche Dogmatik Of 1932-1938, Heino Olavi Kadai
A Comparative Study Of The Prolegomena In Karl Barth's Christliche Dogmatik Of 1927 And The Kirchliche Dogmatik Of 1932-1938, Heino Olavi Kadai
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
After his first Prolegomena in 1927 seemed to indicate the shape which his theology was to take, Barth abruptly discontinued his work to start over again. The new beginning in 1932 led to the monumental Kirchliche Dogmatik. Did Barth need to start over again? In what way do the two Prolegomena agree or disagree? What were the advantages of the Kirchliche Dogmatik? These are the questions that should be answered in this study. In the process of the investigation Barth's basic foundations of theology become visible in the historical context in which they were conceived and in which they are …
A Survey Of Trends And Problems In Biblical Interpretation, Edgar Krentz
A Survey Of Trends And Problems In Biblical Interpretation, Edgar Krentz
Concordia Theological Monthly
Any man fool enough to accept the assignment described in the title above deserves his fate. He is like the mythological traveler approaching ancient Thebes. To go forward means to meet the Sphinx and her dread riddle; to miss the answer means to be thrown headlong down a precipitous cliff and face destruction. Yet the possibility that one may deprive Oedipus of his glory by answering the riddle leads one to trudge along the dusty path under the hot sun.

Tribute To John W. Behnken: Ministry In The Acceptable Time, Alfred O. Fuerbringer
Tribute To John W. Behnken: Ministry In The Acceptable Time, Alfred O. Fuerbringer
Concordia Theological Monthly
In our worship this morning two lines of thought converge. In the first place, it's the beginning of a new academic quarter, the last of this year. That raises questions: How are we doing? Are we reasonably close to schedule? Are we able for another three months to take the mounting pressures and to finish our courses? If we are concerned about the long-range and not just about today or tomorrow, next week or next May, what about our ministry?
The Posting Of Luther’S Theses - Legend Or Fact?, Franz Lau
The Posting Of Luther’S Theses - Legend Or Fact?, Franz Lau
Concordia Theological Monthly
Less than 10 years ago a discussion began over the posting of Luther's Ninety-five Theses, some doubting that it actually took place on the traditional day of October 31, 1517, some going so far as to contend that the posting never happened and is only a legend. Ten years ago, in the summer of 1957 at the Lutheran World Federation Meeting in Minneapolis, I was one of those who saw a young Sunday school teacher, impersonating Luther, on a float in a parade vigorously nail a copy of the Ninety-five Theses on a stage door depicting the one of Wittenberg. …
History And Theology In The Writings Of The Chronicler, Peter R. Ackroyd
History And Theology In The Writings Of The Chronicler, Peter R. Ackroyd
Concordia Theological Monthly
It would seem as if the Greek title of the two books of Chronicles, Ta Paraleipomena (“The things omitted") has left a certain legacy of doubt about the value of the work of the Chronicler. In liturgical use as well as in reconstructions of the history, particularly those of a more conservative kind, the tendency has often been for passages from 1 and 2 Chronicles to be inserted or utilized at what appear to be appropriate places when Samuel and Kings are being read or the history of that period is being surveyed, by way of supplementing the material covered …

Characteristics Of Southeast Asian Islam As Factors In A Theology Of The Christian Mission To Philippine Muslims, Robert Mcamis
Characteristics Of Southeast Asian Islam As Factors In A Theology Of The Christian Mission To Philippine Muslims, Robert Mcamis
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
The Christian mission to Islam offers one of the greatest challenges which the Christian Church has ever faced. In 1962 the Lutheran Church in the Philippines, in spite of its limited manpower and resources, accepted the challenge of the Christian mission to Philippine Islam. At the initial stage of this mission it is well to analyze the problem in detail. This demands a thorough understanding of Philippine Islam. The objective of this study is a clear picture of the Muslim situation in the Philippines together with implications for the Christian mission to Philippine Islam.

The Adolescent And The Inner-City, Edwin Rehrauer
The Adolescent And The Inner-City, Edwin Rehrauer
Master of Divinity Thesis
The subject to be investigated in this paper is that of the inner-city adolescent, with special reference to the problem of delinquent behavior.
The aim of this paper is to see what are the special problems of the adolescents as they grow up within the inner-city environment. Although the role of the church is considered, the major topics examined in the paper are the inner-city and adolescents.

This is the third annual Biblical studies issue, and it emphasizes trends in synoptic exegesis. The first three articles deal with the key question in gospel studies today: How does one explain the marked similarities and differences among the synoptic gospels? The question itself is not new to the church. Tatian the Syrian wrestled with it in the second Christian century. He prepared a single gospel, which effectively concealed all the differences. But preachers soon discovered that they were preaching the gospel according to Tatian rather than one or the other of the inspired, canonical gospels.
Titus 3:5 And Baptismal Regeneration, Adrian Leske
Titus 3:5 And Baptismal Regeneration, Adrian Leske
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The aim of this thesis, therefore, is to review the various interpretations of Titus 3:5 and baptismal regeneration throughout the history of the Church, to examine them in the light of their environments, and finally to reach a conclusion as to the meaning of Titus 3:5 and baptismal regeneration on the basis of an exegetical study or the text in its historical background. It is contended that once a true understanding of baptismal regeneration has been reached other problems dealing with baptism will be readily resolved. It is also contended that with a right understanding or baptismal regeneration the danger …
The New Quest Of The Historical Jesus In Selected Alte Marburger Of Rudolf Bultmann, Bruce Barth
The New Quest Of The Historical Jesus In Selected Alte Marburger Of Rudolf Bultmann, Bruce Barth
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The purpose of this study is to investigate the new quest of the historical Jesus as it has been carried out by four pupils of Rudolf Bultmann. These four pupils are: Ernst Kasemann, Gunther Bornkamm, Gerhard Ebeling, and Ernst Fuchs. They are part of a group of former Bultmann pupils who have called themselves the "Alte Marburger," or "old Marburgers," from the fact that they all studied together under Bultmann at the University of Marburg.
