The Theology Of Israel's Sea Crossing, Rodger Dalman May 1990

The Theology Of Israel's Sea Crossing, Rodger Dalman

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

In Exodus 14:2, God commanded Israel to do a strange thing. God directed Israel to turn from their route, and to walk into a trap. By wandering to the shores of a reed sea, Israel intentionally gave Pharaoh the impression that they were lost, and tempted him to pursue them. Why would God command this? After all, Egypt had already been destroyed. Thousands of Egyptians had died. Pharaoh's will had been broken, and he had let Israel go.. The nation was already leaving Egypt for Palestine. Why did Israel not simply pass through the border fortresses and go on their …

An Historical Analysis Of The Doctrine Of The Ministry In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod Until 1962, John Wohlrabe May 1987

An Historical Analysis Of The Doctrine Of The Ministry In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod Until 1962, John Wohlrabe

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

This study will analyze the historical background of statements on the doctrine of the ministry within The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod (hereafter identified as the Missouri Synod) until 1962. Such statements on the doctrine of the ministry will include declarations and resolutions which were officially adopted by the Synod at its conventions, books, articles and essays published or delivered by Missouri Synod theologians, statements drafted in attempts at reaching doctrinal unity with other Lutherans, and the personal papers and minutes of certain individuals, boards or agencies which had a decided impact upon the position of the Synod with respect to the …

The Priesthood Of All Believers And The Theology Of Pietism, Breno Faber May 1984

The Priesthood Of All Believers And The Theology Of Pietism, Breno Faber

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Pietism and pietistic emphases are becoming popular again because during the seventeenth and early eighteenth century the Pietists sought to revitalize Christianity in ways familiar to twentieth century Christians seeking to do the same. Pietism sought to foster a more vigorous personal and public piety among the people. They sought to improve the education of ministers in practical piety so that they might better guide and edify their people. They sought to encourage the reading of the Bible, Christian education of the youthful and the mature, demonstrated social concern and resposibility in their philanthropic enterprises, and embarked upon ambitious programs …

A Case Study In Ecumenical Methodology: Survey And Evaluation Of Post-Vatican Ii Roman Catholic/Protestant Solutions For Achieving Doctrinal Consensus Concerning The Marian Dogmas Of The Immaculate Conception And Bodily Assumption, Terence Groth May 1983

A Case Study In Ecumenical Methodology: Survey And Evaluation Of Post-Vatican Ii Roman Catholic/Protestant Solutions For Achieving Doctrinal Consensus Concerning The Marian Dogmas Of The Immaculate Conception And Bodily Assumption, Terence Groth

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In light of these developments it seems apparent that the church has a need to take cognizance of these methods and evaluate them to determine which, if any, are legitimate approaches to the problem of achieving doctrinal consensus in the church today. That, in short, is the burden of this study.

In the scope of this study the application of these methods to every major doctrinal obstacle now being tackled cannot be observed. Therefore, it was decided to focus attention upon one area of major disagreement which both Roman Catholics and Protestants agree is an obstacle which must be overcome …

The Historical-Critical Method- Dividing Wall Between Moderates And Conservatives In The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Controversy, Jose Fuliga Jun 1982

The Historical-Critical Method- Dividing Wall Between Moderates And Conservatives In The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Controversy, Jose Fuliga

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

There are, without question, theological and non-theological differences between the Moderates and Conservatives which are not directly related to the former's use of historical criticism. The role politics has played in the controversy cannot be denied. The differences regarding the practice of unionism, ecumenism, close communion, church polity, and even Synodical policies toward foreign missions have been controverted issues. But the focus of this study will be confined to verifying whether the use of historical criticism is indeed the dividing wall, between Moderates and Conservatives. This research shall furthermore probe if the Moderates' hermeneutical presupposition -- the Law-Gospel reductionism restrains …

Was Jesus The Priestly Messiah A Study Of The New Testament's Teaching Of Jesus' Priestly Office Against The Background Of Jewish Hopes For A Priestly Messiah, Jonathan Grothe May 1981

Was Jesus The Priestly Messiah A Study Of The New Testament's Teaching Of Jesus' Priestly Office Against The Background Of Jewish Hopes For A Priestly Messiah, Jonathan Grothe

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

Thus, on a narrower scale, this study aims to test an hypothesis in one area of New Testament Christology and to present conclusions regarding it. Since the question involves also the relationship of Judaism to the New Testament, this study also aspires to make a contribution to the ongoing task of methodically examining and carefully describing that relationship. Inasmuch as a major section of the study deals with the Epistle to the Hebrews, it also includes among its goals the attempt to add to the current discussion of the proper background and purpose of Hebrews.

As an historical and exegetical …

The Reformation In Norway: A Historical-Bibliographical Survey, Jack Preus Feb 1980

The Reformation In Norway: A Historical-Bibliographical Survey, Jack Preus

Master of Divinity Thesis

The purpose of this study is to explore a few of the many questions that could be raised concerning the advent of the Reformation to Norway. When did the Lutheran Church of Norway begin? How did it come into being? Where did it begin? Where did it flourish first? How did Norway become a truly “Lutheran" country? Who were the heros or the antiheros of the Reformation in Norway? Where can one go to find out more about the Church of Norway? This study attempts to answer some of these questions.

The Wauwatosa Theology: J.P. Koehler, His Exegetical Methodology And The Prote'stant Conference, Charles Werth

Master of Divinity Thesis

Given the limited secondary resources available on the Wauwatosa Theology, this paper intends to provide a brief summary of issues involved in the activity and fall of the Wauwatosa Theology. The aim of the paper is to provide an alternative viewpoint to Leigh Jordahl's Master's Thesis entitled “The Wauwatosa Theology" and the summary of the same found in the Introduction to The History of the Wisconsin Synod by John Philip Koehler.

The Passion Predictions In The Light Of Hebrews 2:5-9, E Clark Copeland Sep 1975

The Passion Predictions In The Light Of Hebrews 2:5-9, E Clark Copeland

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

There has, however, not been a serious tracing of the passage in Heb. 2:5-9 to Jesus' use of Son of Man in the predictions of His suffering. Nor, has there been a biblical theological development of the Son of Man concept from Psalm 8 through Psalm 80, Daniel 7, the teaching of Jesus, and on to its use in Hebrews. The present study would undertake this task in order to relate the findings to the “world to come" over which Jesus is enthroned, according toe. 2:5.

The view of Scripture guiding this study is that of the Reformers; namely, that …

History In The Hermeneutics Of Jurgen Moltmann, Lloyd Gross May 1974

History In The Hermeneutics Of Jurgen Moltmann, Lloyd Gross

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

"In Europe it is often said that the theology of hope is neither a school nor a movement, but a book.” That book is Theologie der Hoffnung, by Jurgen Moltmann. In Europe no more can be said about the theology of hope than has already been said by Moltmann. His work has become the measure of the school of theology which claims history as its special province! So the study here attempted is devoted mostly to that book in an effort to evaluate and understand the contribution it has made to the contemporary discussion of history and its relationship to …

The History And Development Of Religious Education In Ontario Schools, John Douglas Schweyer Jul 1973

The History And Development Of Religious Education In Ontario Schools, John Douglas Schweyer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The present thesis is concerned with the history and development of religious education in Ontario schools, but it attempts to interpret the Ontario system for a readership which primarily knows the system and lives within the cultural and national context of the United States. A glossary is therefore included to explain certain terms which may be unfamiliar to the reader. A comparison of similarities and differences between the Ontario program for religious education and that prevalent in other jurisdictions is provided throughout the discussion. Chapter I presents an overview of the historical situation in Ontario concerning religious education and outlines …

A History Of The Research Of Exodus 18:1-12 With A Critical Evaluation And Suggestions For Further Progress, Andrew Chiu May 1973

A History Of The Research Of Exodus 18:1-12 With A Critical Evaluation And Suggestions For Further Progress, Andrew Chiu

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

In order to capture an over-all view of the research of Ex. 18:1-12, the study will proceed from a historical perspective, stating and critically evaluating in chronological order the theses of major scholars both for and against the Kenite hypothesis. Then the research will turn to a new dimension of the study of this pericope. Finally, the dissertation will present a critical scrutiny of the text itself. By way of textual criticism, literary criticism, form criticism, tradition criticism, redaction criticism, and historical analysis of the text, the study will make an attempt to search out what the text meant in …

“The Log In Your Own Eye.", Paul G. Bretscher Nov 1972

“The Log In Your Own Eye.", Paul G. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is painful for me to write what I am about to write-about the log in the eye of my own church. I am not blind to some of the specks or even logs which concern many of my brothers. Every confusion and diffusion and diminution of the Gospel deeply disturbs me. But our first concern has to be the log in the eye of those among us who assume they are qualified to do eye surgery on their brothers. The Lord's judgment has a strange way of beginning at Jerusalem.

Attitudes In The Early Church Affecting Petrine Primacy, Gilbert Franke May 1972

Attitudes In The Early Church Affecting Petrine Primacy, Gilbert Franke

Master of Divinity Thesis

This study is an investigation of the attitudes expressed by the early church toward St. Peter. While most attempts to understand the origin of Rome's claim to authority based on Petrine primacy have dealt with attitudes expressed in documents, the approach here is to examine the evidence found in various types of artistic expression. It is hoped that the attitudes toward St. Peter which affected and may have caused the unique association between himself and Rome are clarified. It is important to note in this respect that this study deals with the development of attitudes actually held in the early …

Significant Interpretations Of Developing Structures Of The Ministry-1880-1970, Roland A. Frantz May 1972

Significant Interpretations Of Developing Structures Of The Ministry-1880-1970, Roland A. Frantz

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

A historical study of the Church's ministry soon discloses a great deal of variety in the ministerial office. As Niebuhr and Williams remind us in their historical survey of the Protestant ministry, while there are a number of aspects of ministry that are agreed upon and shared in the various historic churches, there are also divergent interpretations regarding the nature and essence of the ministerial office.

Doctrinal Emphases In The Missouri Synod, Erwin L. Lueker Apr 1972

Doctrinal Emphases In The Missouri Synod, Erwin L. Lueker

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod has had the same doctrinal basis for 125 years. It is remarkable that within that period of time the loyalty of no group in Synod to that basis as given in the constitution could be seriously challenged. This, however, does not mean that there were no variations in emphases. This study is a brief synopsis of such variations. It is not concerned with difference, uniformity, contradiction, or inconsistency in doctrine (although some of these factors may be present) but with coordinating stresses. Examination of consistent adherence to basic insights is also beyond the scope of this …

Law-Gospel Reductionism In The History Of The Lutheran Church -Missouri Synod, Edward H. Schroeder Apr 1972

Law-Gospel Reductionism In The History Of The Lutheran Church -Missouri Synod, Edward H. Schroeder

Concordia Theological Monthly

This essay proposes to trace a segment of the history of hermeneutics in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod insofar as the distinction between Law and Gospel plays a role in that history. The study is important because in recent years one school of thought in the Synod has stated that some pastors and teachers are confusing the proper relationship between the two by practicing what these critics call "Gospel reductionism." This criticism seems to have been launched in the Synod in two conference papers that John Warwick Montgomery delivered to eight different audiences in the spring and fall of 1966.

Fundamentalism And The Missouri Synod, Milton L. Rudnick Apr 1972

Fundamentalism And The Missouri Synod, Milton L. Rudnick

Concordia Theological Monthly

Perhaps current tensions and polarization in the Synod have demonstrated the relevance of the study and desirability of updating it. On the other hand, 125th anniversary considerations may have prompted the request. Then again, since the request came rather late (only a month before the deadline), the unflattering truth may be that this article is a "filler" for other material which was cancelled at the last minute. Some questions are better left unanswered. (ED.: Ain't it the truth?)

Annotated Bibliography And Some Integrating Observations On Conversion Including A Brief New Testament Study, Jeffrey Anderson Nov 1971

Annotated Bibliography And Some Integrating Observations On Conversion Including A Brief New Testament Study, Jeffrey Anderson

Master of Divinity Thesis

The diversity of views on conversion and the conflict within talk about conversion leads us to believe that the vital question remains unanswered: What is conversion? Conversion is a functional word in most people’s religious vocabulary, but it has a host of meanings, and many who use the term are not able to clarify their meaning. Our analysis of material on conversion--psychological, religious, and New Testament—has led to several conclusions and integrating statements. They are spelled out under their various headings below.

The Sense Of Church History In Representative Missouri Synod Theology, David W. Lotz Oct 1971

The Sense Of Church History In Representative Missouri Synod Theology, David W. Lotz

Concordia Theological Monthly

Based on representative Missouri Synod writings from the late 19th century, the author describes and documents an "antihistorical bias" that has provided impediments to an appropriate appreciation of church history in Missouri Synod theology.

The Inspired Community: A Glance At Canon History, Everett R. Kalin Sep 1971

The Inspired Community: A Glance At Canon History, Everett R. Kalin

Concordia Theological Monthly

The leaders of the Early Church who gave us the first lists of New Testament Scriptures asserted the inspiration of these books but did not regard inspiration as the basis of their uniqueness. They saw the inspiration of the Scriptures as one aspect of a much broader activity of inspiration in the church. This article investigates the interrelationship between inspiration and canonicity and attempts tentative contemporary applications of the fathers' perspective.

The Role Of The Old Testament In High School Level Curricula Of The American Lutheran Church, The Lutheran Church In America, And The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod 1964-1970, Harold W. Rast Jun 1971

The Role Of The Old Testament In High School Level Curricula Of The American Lutheran Church, The Lutheran Church In America, And The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod 1964-1970, Harold W. Rast

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The aim of this study is to determine how the various curriculum materials present Word of God in the Old Testament. Accordingly, topics or categories to be dealt with include revelation, Bible, the unity of the testaments, salvation, morality, and historical-critical exegesis.

In a general way, then, this study proposes to engage in what educators would call descriptive research. One type of descriptive research is content analysis, the use of a set of techniques to determine certain specified characteristics of verbal communication. According to Gephart and Ingle, education professors at Indiana University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the purpose of …

A Systematic-Historical Study Of The Policy Of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod With Respect To Fraternal Organizations In The Past Fifty Years, George F. Lobien Jun 1971

A Systematic-Historical Study Of The Policy Of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod With Respect To Fraternal Organizations In The Past Fifty Years, George F. Lobien

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The purpose of this research was to accurately ascertain the policy and practice of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod with respect to fraternal organizations-usually called lodges or secret societies in its literature-at specific times throughout its history. If any changes in policy or practice were discovered, these were to be noted so that trends might become apparent and causes for change might be discovered.

Furthermore, it was the intention of the author to reach a judgment as to why The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod is as concerned with the issue of fraternal organizations as its literature demonstrates it to be. Conclusions also …
