The Study And Interpretation Of The Old Testament, Albert E. Glock Feb 1967

The Study And Interpretation Of The Old Testament, Albert E. Glock

Concordia Theological Monthly

The subtitle of this study might well be: "Prisoners of Hope: New Perspectives for the Study of Old Testament History and Theology." The single Biblical occurrence of the phrase, "prisoners of hope” is located in a "messenger speech" (Botenspruch) in Zechariah 9:11-13.

Editorial, Walter Wegner

Concordia Theological Monthly

In this issue Pastor Herbert Lindemann discusses the characteristics of the scholarly pastor. The pastor-scholar, he maintains, "should have some acquaintance with and sympathy for the attitudes, objectives, and methods generally accepted among scholars." What is the one quality of scholarship which, above all others, should characterize the pastor? Pastor Lindemann answers: "Honesty: a passionate love for the truth, a rigorous elimination of all prejudice, illusion, and old wives' tales, a willingness to investigate and then to accept the factual results of the investigation, however unpalatable these may be." That perceptive observation happily provides a point of unification for the …

The Cursing Of The Barren Fig Tree (Mark 11:2-14), Ronald Lehenbauer Feb 1967

The Cursing Of The Barren Fig Tree (Mark 11:2-14), Ronald Lehenbauer

Master of Divinity Thesis

The main purpose of this paper, however, is to attempt to answer the third question listed above; it is hoped that in the process of the discussion solutions to some of the other difficulties will also suggest themselves. Concentrating on the Markan account, we will proceed first by discussing various answers that have been suggested to the question: what was the original purpose of the story? Secondly, the text will be examined exegetically and its context in Mark will be scrutinized in an effort to determine which of the suggested answers best accords with the evidence. Because of the scope …

Postscript To The Markan Secrecy Motif, Frederick W. Danker Jan 1967

Postscript To The Markan Secrecy Motif, Frederick W. Danker

Concordia Theological Monthly

In his penetrating article "'The Ending of Mark and the Gospel's Shift in Eschatology" Herman Waetjen argues for the original termination at Mark 16:8: Throughout the gospel Jesus has been the hidden Messiah. In exorcisms he has forbidden the demons to speak. Those who were cured by him in Galilee were ordered not to mention a word of it to anyone. No one was to know until the Son of Man was glorified and the Kingdom had come in power (9:1). Now, finally, the command is given, "Go and tell." But the women said nothing to anyone, for they were …

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper deals with the Healer Asklepios of Golden Age Greece and the healing miracles preserved in the early Christian Gospel. This present study was motivated by a preliminary exegetical consideration of the healing of the blind man in John 9:1-12. At the time of that initial, study in May, 1964, the author became interested in parallels to this pericope in the healings of Asklepios. Thought was given to the possibility that the writer of the Gospel of John composed his record with the healings of Asklepios in mind, and that certain emphases in the Gospel, traditions concerning the Healer …

Μὴ ΔιακρίΝων Τ̀Ο Σω̑Υα (Mē Diakrinōn To Sōma (Romanized Form), David Joesting Nov 1966

Μὴ ΔιακρίΝων Τ̀Ο Σω̑Υα (Mē Diakrinōn To Sōma (Romanized Form), David Joesting

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper is to explore the meaning of Paul's expression μὴ διακρίνων τ̀ο σω̑υα in 1 Cor.11:29. The basic task is exegetical, but the concern which promted the research is the pragmatic concern of meaning in use. This paper will, therefore, begin with a careful study to determine, as best as is possible, what Paul meant when he wrote the words in question. It will conclude with an analysis and evaluation of past and present application of 1 Cor. 11:29 and its context.

Basic Considerations In Understanding The Goal Of Faith In The Sermons Of John Donne, Carlton Riemer Nov 1966

Basic Considerations In Understanding The Goal Of Faith In The Sermons Of John Donne, Carlton Riemer

Master of Divinity Thesis

This study comprises an examination of a specific aspect of the art of preaching and a particular preacher who practiced the art of preaching with an unusual amount of success. The preacher is John Donne, an Anglican homiletician of the 17thCentury. He was chosen as a valid object for study in the general field of homiletics because his sermons are receiving renewed attention and analysis in the 20th Century. Contemporary homileticians and theologians are able to study Donne’s sermons because all of his 160 extant sermons have been published in a ten volume edition prepared by George R. Potter and …

Mark 1:45 And The Secrecy Motif, Frederick W. Danker Sep 1966

Mark 1:45 And The Secrecy Motif, Frederick W. Danker

Concordia Theological Monthly

The concluding verse of Mark’s pericope of the healing of the leper (1:40-45) contains two challenging problems.

Editorial, Herbert T. Mayer Sep 1966

Editorial, Herbert T. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

This is the third annual Biblical studies issue, and it emphasizes trends in synoptic exegesis. The first three articles deal with the key question in gospel studies today: How does one explain the marked similarities and differences among the synoptic gospels? The question itself is not new to the church. Tatian the Syrian wrestled with it in the second Christian century. He prepared a single gospel, which effectively concealed all the differences. But preachers soon discovered that they were preaching the gospel according to Tatian rather than one or the other of the inspired, canonical gospels.

Creation And Salvation: A Study Of Genesis 1 And 2, Walter Wegner Sep 1966

Creation And Salvation: A Study Of Genesis 1 And 2, Walter Wegner

Concordia Theological Monthly

The purpose of this study is to highlight the soteriological significance of the Genesis creation accounts. The fourth gospel preserves our Lord's statement about the Old Testament Scriptures in which He declares that they '"bear witness to Me" (John 5:39). The pages of this article reflect the conviction that this declaration of Jesus, which applies to the Old Testament as a whole, is fully applicable also to the creation chapters of Genesis.

Logical Terminology In The Epistles To The Hebrews, Wilhelm C. Linss Jun 1966

Logical Terminology In The Epistles To The Hebrews, Wilhelm C. Linss

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is usually recognized that the author of the Epistle to the Hebrews is presenting an argument for the superiority of Christianity to the religion of the Old Covenant and that he bases this argument on the comparison of the Son of God with the angels and with Moses, on the comparison of the new high priest with the priests of old, and on the comparison of the sanctuary and the sacrifice of the New Covenant with those of the Old. It is furthermore agreed that he uses means of rhetoric to get his point across. Thus Michel says: "In …

The Voice In The Wilderness And The Coming One-- The Old Testament As The Link Between John The Baptist And Jesus Christ, Walter Rosin Jun 1966

The Voice In The Wilderness And The Coming One-- The Old Testament As The Link Between John The Baptist And Jesus Christ, Walter Rosin

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

As already indicated, in dealing with the question of the relationship between Jesus and John it is easily possible to overlook what is at least an equally important area, the content of the Baptist's message. In addition, an emphasis upon the environmental factors tends to lead to a generalization regarding the similarity of one movement to another without making sufficient allowance for original elements or for elements whose origin may not be in the contemporary scene but rather in a previous era. It is this content of the Baptist's message which has often been dealt with piecemeal in journal articles …

Titus 3:5 And Baptismal Regeneration, Adrian Leske Jun 1966

Titus 3:5 And Baptismal Regeneration, Adrian Leske

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The aim of this thesis, therefore, is to review the various interpretations of Titus 3:5 and baptismal regeneration throughout the history of the Church, to examine them in the light of their environments, and finally to reach a conclusion as to the meaning of Titus 3:5 and baptismal regeneration on the basis of an exegetical study or the text in its historical background. It is contended that once a true understanding of baptismal regeneration has been reached other problems dealing with baptism will be readily resolved. It is also contended that with a right understanding or baptismal regeneration the danger …

Pauline Eschatology In 2 Corinthians 5_1-10, Robert Hausman Jun 1966

Pauline Eschatology In 2 Corinthians 5_1-10, Robert Hausman

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this paper, then, is to compare and contrast the various interpretations in an attempt to discover their strengths and weaknesses. If possible, some guidelines will be suggested for the interpretation of this passage and probabilities will be noted where answers are unavailable. The complex question of historical background will be discussed as it relates to the various interpretations, but it cannot be treated in depth.

St Paul's Concept Of Joy, Kenneth Rogahn Jun 1966

St Paul's Concept Of Joy, Kenneth Rogahn

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study seeks to discover some of the meaning and significance of "joy” for St. Paul and his readers. This basic New Testament concept had significance in his theology and thought as well as in his personal life, and this paper intends to seek that significance for St. Paul und for the church today.

The Temptation Of Jesus In Matthew, Paul Bretscher May 1966

The Temptation Of Jesus In Matthew, Paul Bretscher

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

Our purpose in this study is to understand the story of Jesus' temptation in Matthew 4:1-10. We are concerned in particular to find the meaning of the three episodes, each consisting in an attack of: the devil and a reply of Jesus, which form the body of the pericope.

The Use And Procedure Of Fraternal Admonition According To Matthew 16:15-17, Karl Schmidt May 1966

The Use And Procedure Of Fraternal Admonition According To Matthew 16:15-17, Karl Schmidt

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The basic purpose of this study of Matthew 18:15-17, as is the case with the valid study of any portion of Holy Scripture, is to determine the message which the Lord here speaks to His people today. More specifically, this study seeks to determine two things: (l) whether or not our Lord here lays down an explicit procedure for dealing with the sinning brother, and (2) whether this particular section of Scripture speaks only of personal relationships among Christians, or also of formal ecclesiastical discipline and excommunication.

The Hopes Of Israel, Roddy Braun May 1966

The Hopes Of Israel, Roddy Braun

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis seeks to examine in detail Israel' s hopes for the future as they find expression in the Latter Prophets. More specifically, this thesis seeks to investigate the precise forms in which and by which Israel expressed her hopes. It attempts to isolate and to examine the many varying pictures which Israel used to portray her hopes and, to the degree that the material at hand permits, to bring these varying pictures together into something of an organized whole.

Τελειοξ In Paul And Hebrews, Robert Rickus May 1966

Τελειοξ In Paul And Hebrews, Robert Rickus

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study is intended to analyze and explain the use of Τέλειος and cognates primarily in the thirteen Pauline Epistles and Hebrews, with specific reference to the problem of semantic uniformity in these epistles. / Although much has been written about individual occurrences of Τέλειος , / the question of the over-all role of Τέλειος terminology has received less attention than it deserves, and where treated, has too often been considered under the category of "perfection," which is not always an appropriate category for understanding individual passages, or recurring themes associated with Τέλειος. The findings of this study will be …

An Examination Of The Logic Of Religious Discourse With A View To Ascertaining The Impact Of Linguistic Analysis Upon Contemporary Philosophy Of Religion, John Groh May 1966

An Examination Of The Logic Of Religious Discourse With A View To Ascertaining The Impact Of Linguistic Analysis Upon Contemporary Philosophy Of Religion, John Groh

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This paper proposes to examine how linguistic analysis, together with its precursor logical positivism, has provoked a reassessment of the nature of religious discourse. The problem is accurately stated in two questions: (1) What are the challenges which analysis directs to the philosopher of religion in the area of religious language? (2) In what ways do the replies of the philosophers of religion relate to and illumine these challenges?

Berith Olam- Studies In The Davidic Covenant Traditions, James Rimbach May 1966

Berith Olam- Studies In The Davidic Covenant Traditions, James Rimbach

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of the present study is to explore one of these covenants, the Davidic covenant, in the light of recent analyses of the Near Eastern treaties. This portion of the study will be the material in Chapter II.

The Curses Of Deuteronomy 27 As A Sanction In The Covenant Form Of Deuteronomy, Elmer Flor May 1966

The Curses Of Deuteronomy 27 As A Sanction In The Covenant Form Of Deuteronomy, Elmer Flor

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The pericope of curses found in Deut. 27:15-26 presents several striking problems. The word for cursing as used in the pericope has a connotation of terrible doom. The passive form of the verb leaves the agent of the curse undetermined. Therefore it becomes necessary to establish the exact meaning of the word in the Hebrew and other Semitic languages in order to draw the significance of invoking a curse in the ancient world. The question then arises regarding the relationship between the practice of cursing in the Bible and in the ancient Near East.

Besides these problems, the present study …

The Literary Background Of The Epistile Of Jude, Trenton Ferro May 1966

The Literary Background Of The Epistile Of Jude, Trenton Ferro

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This writer felt that this study was necessary and worthwhile for two reasons. First, he desired to reach some reasonable conclusion for the problem stated above on the basis of an objective scrutiny of the material, influenced neither by ·preconceived conclusions about the problem nor by emotional concerns which would have, and often have, answered the question without a fair study. This latter concern arises from the fact that many commentators have argued against Jude's use of apocryphal literature on the basis of their view of inspiration, revelation, and canonicity rather than on the basis of an objective handling of …

Preparation For Discipleship- Discipleship In Jesus' Farewell Discourses, St John13-17, L Dean Hempelmann May 1966

Preparation For Discipleship- Discipleship In Jesus' Farewell Discourses, St John13-17, L Dean Hempelmann

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The meaning of discipleship is significant for the church today. As the world changes, the church and the members of the church change, and it becomes necessary for the church to renew her churchliness. In order to be the church, the church must know the meaning of discipleship. If the church wants to understand her divine duty she must know the meaning of discipleship. This thesis presents an investigation of the meaning of discipleship in Jesus' farewell discourses in the Gospel according to St. John (chapters 13-17).

Tongues And Prophecy--A Comparative Study In Charismata, Anthony Palma May 1966

Tongues And Prophecy--A Comparative Study In Charismata, Anthony Palma

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

A link between the two charismata of prophecy and glossolalia is undeniable and provides the basis for a study and comparison of these two "utterance gifts." It is the primary purpose of this paper to explore the relationship of these two gifts to each other.

The Righteousness Of Job, Bruce Malchow May 1966

The Righteousness Of Job, Bruce Malchow

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Job contends emphatically that he is righteous. His righteousness is one of the key points in the Book of Job, because Job builds his whole argument against Eloah upon the fact that God should not be punishing a righteous man. But what does Job mean when he says that he is righteous? It is commonly assumed that he is making a moral assertion. Job's three friends are the first to make this assumption. They berate Job for the impurity and scandalousness of his life. Subsequent interpreters of the Book of Job concur with the friends' evaluation of Job's righteousness. They …

Exodus 3:14 As A Word-Play, James Shaud May 1966

Exodus 3:14 As A Word-Play, James Shaud

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This present study is concerned only with one particular relationship: that between a name and the word-play associated with it. Thus it is the structure of individual passages which is examined while the relationship of these passages to their literary units or oral background plays a secondary role. This then is not form analysis in the strict sense, though it is closer to this method than to any other.

Luther Against Erasmus, James I. Packer Apr 1966

Luther Against Erasmus, James I. Packer

Concordia Theological Monthly

On Sept. 6, 1524, Desiderius Erasmus, the foremost literary man of his day, sat in his study writing a letter to a distinguished friend and patron, Henry VIII, King of England. In the course of his letter came the words: ''The die is cast. The little book on free-will has seen the light of day." He was referring to his Diatribe seu collatio de libero arbitrio ("Discussion or Conference Concerning Free Will"), which had been published at Basel five days earlier. He wrote more truly than he knew. The die was now cast indeed. A Rubicon had been crossed, and …
