Self-Determination Through Circus Arts: Exploring Youth Development In A Novel Activity Context, Jennifer Agans, Jacqueline Davis, Spyridoula Vazou, Tal Jarus
Self-Determination Through Circus Arts: Exploring Youth Development In A Novel Activity Context, Jennifer Agans, Jacqueline Davis, Spyridoula Vazou, Tal Jarus
Journal of Youth Development
Youth development takes place in many contexts, with different resulting participant outcomes. Broadening the scope of research to include non-traditional contexts such as youth circus arts programs, which are both similar to and different from other out-of-school-time contexts, may promote better understanding of the ways in which these programs impact youth development. The present study examined the prevalence of support for basic psychological needs and positive developmental outcomes among youth circus program participants. Single time-point quantitative surveys were completed by 111 youth members of the American Youth Circus Organization (62% female), ranging in age from 10 to 21. Results indicated …
Gluten Detection Methods And Their Critical Role In Assuring Safe Diets For Celiac Patients, Claudia E. Osorio, Jaime H. Mejias, Sachin Rustgi
Gluten Detection Methods And Their Critical Role In Assuring Safe Diets For Celiac Patients, Claudia E. Osorio, Jaime H. Mejias, Sachin Rustgi
Publications
Celiac disease, wheat sensitivity, and allergy represent three different reactions, which may occur in genetically predisposed individuals on the ingestion of wheat and derived products with various manifestations. Improvements in the disease diagnostics and understanding of disease etiology unveiled that these disorders are widespread around the globe affecting about 7% of the population. The only known treatment so far is a life-long gluten-free diet, which is almost impossible to follow because of the contamination of allegedly “gluten-free” products. Accidental contamination of inherently gluten-free products could take place at any level from field to shelf because of the ubiquity of these …
Recollections: Life In South Carolina Mill Villages, Thomas Hudson Cartledge
Recollections: Life In South Carolina Mill Villages, Thomas Hudson Cartledge
All Theses
The rise of the textile industry in the 20th century was a significant contributor to the economy of South carolina. In order to attract and retain critically needed labor, mill owners provided affordable housing by building villages in which workers and their families could live and from which workers could easily reach the mills. The physical conditions of these villages is well documented; however, there has been little or no documentation of the daily lives of the people who inhabited those villages. Since most of the residents are reaching advanced age, this gap must be filled promptly.
This research involved …
Bacterial Diversity Of The Gut Of Cotinis Nitida, Roy Attila Kucuk
Bacterial Diversity Of The Gut Of Cotinis Nitida, Roy Attila Kucuk
All Theses
Adult and larval Holometabolous insects exhibit radically different gut morphologies tied to their differing natural histories. Additionally, like other animals, these organisms frequently show distinctive morphological and physiological partitioning of their digestive systems, and this reflects on resident microbial communities. A review of the literature reveals bacteria have formed various symbioses with holometabolous hosts, differing widely in the context of host-symbiont services and patterns of colonization. The significance of these organisms in shaping host evolution and vice-versa is, at present, unclear, but intriguing in the context of host phylogeny.
Using high throughput 16S amplicon sequencing, the bacterial community of the …
Stability And Toxicity Of Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles In Water-Soil-Plant Systems, Linlin Mu
Stability And Toxicity Of Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles In Water-Soil-Plant Systems, Linlin Mu
All Dissertations
Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) are being increasingly used in industrial and consumer products and the release of CeO2 NPs into the air, water, and soil is an inevitable consequence. Once released into the environment, CeO2 NPs can have adverse impacts on the environment and human health. Thus, characterizing the environmental behavior and toxic effects of CeO2 NPs is important to protect the environment and human health. To assure such protection, the stability and phytotoxicity of CeO2 NPs need to be known because they are key to understanding their transport, toxicity and bioavailability in water and soil. The objective of …

Tall fescue is the primary cool season perennial forage grass in southeastern US for grazing livestock. Tall fescue the is known to be drought tolerant , disease resistant, grazing tolerant and overall very hardy. Many of these attributes common to fescue are due to a symbiotic relationship between the fescue plant and an endophyte, Epichloë coenophiala , which produces a class of mycotoxins known as ergot alkaloids. These ergot alkaloids are similar in structure to several biogenic amines, such as epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine. When consumed, ergot alkaloids cause a syndrome known as fescue toxicosis which causes problems with weight …

Girls’ Experiences In A Positive Youth Development Sport Program: Developing A Participant-Centered Space, Kelly Johnston, Risto Marttinen, Ray Fredrick Iii, Vidya Bhat
Journal of Youth Development
School-age youth of low-income, urban communities frequently experience systemic inequities, such as limited access to healthy foods, lack of space for physical activity, higher drop-out rates, lower academic performance, and escalating rates of neighborhood violence. These inequities are often exacerbated for girls of color. After-school programs hold great potential for countering these issues, particularly when guided by a positive youth development (PYD) model. This qualitative study examined girls’ experiences in one after-school PYD program called REACH (Reflective Educational Approach to Character and Health). The authors discuss the ways in which the co-creation of a participant-centered space and interrelated connections between …

Fertilizer And Paclobutrazol Effects On Petunia Production And Post-Production Performance, Jiwoo Park
All Theses
Reducing the amount of fertilizer applied to the plants in ornamental plant production industry is a growing trend due to rising environmental concerns; however, reduced fertilization can result in the failure to supply the retail customer with a plant that contains enough nutrients to sustain further growth in the consumer environment where fertilizer application is frequently lacking. Therefore, the objective of the first study was to examine alternative fertilizer delivery strategies that can maintain petunia quality during greenhouse production and continue to sustain plant growth and flowering in the post-production consumer environment. The fertilizer treatments applied to the plants were …
Home Is The Key: A Study Of The Social Impact Of Habitat For Humanity In South Carolina, Rachael M. Bowers
Home Is The Key: A Study Of The Social Impact Of Habitat For Humanity In South Carolina, Rachael M. Bowers
All Dissertations
Rates of housing instability are increasing in the United States, largely due to surging rental costs (Kusisto & Malas, 2018). Public housing systems are full and waiting lists are long (Evans, Sullivan & Wallskog, 2016; Katz, Kling & Liebman, 2002). Low-income homeownership policies have faced strong critiques, especially concerns of coercing people into risky financial situations (Shlay, 2006). With a human development perspective (Bronfenbrenner & Morris, 2006) and in partnership with the Habitat for Humanity program in South Carolina, this cross-sectional study examined the social benefits associated with low-income homeownership achieved through a robust preparation and support program. Using survey …
Infrequent Occurrence Of Peach Skin Streaking And The Role Of Rainwater Attributes On Symptom Development, Linus Schmitz
Infrequent Occurrence Of Peach Skin Streaking And The Role Of Rainwater Attributes On Symptom Development, Linus Schmitz
All Theses
Streaks lacking pigmentation in the skin of red blush cultivars of peaches have impacted many East Coast production areas. The underlying cause of streaking is unclear. Some evidence suggests that streaking may be caused by reactive agents in rainwater. Peach skin streaking was monitored over two consecutive years at a commercial farm with a history of streaking located near Ridge Spring, South Carolina. Six cultivars (two early season, two mid-season, and two late season cultivars) were evaluated each in two locations (LocA and LocB). Among those 12 experimental block cultivars, streaking occurred only in 2017 in cv. Scarletprince of LocA …

The objectives of these studies were to 1) identify and quantify prebiotic carbohydrate profiles [simple sugars, sugar alcohols (SA), raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFO), fructooligosaccharides (FOS), resistant starch (RS), cellulose, hemicellulose, and amylose)] in different market classes of lentil, common bean, and chickpea, 2) determine the changes of SA, …
Factors Influencing The Probability That Consumers Will Purchase Local And Organic Dairy Products, Caleb Edward Orr
Factors Influencing The Probability That Consumers Will Purchase Local And Organic Dairy Products, Caleb Edward Orr
All Theses
U.S. consumption of dairy products is trending upward, however, per capita consumption of fluid milk has decreased (USDA, 2017). By contrast, organic milk and other milk produced in non-conventional ways have experienced significant growth (AMS, 2017). By examining the preferences of specific consumer groups, dairy producers can make production decisions that better fit consumers' needs, which can in turn lead to a more efficient market for fluid milk in the U.S.
This thesis seeks to identify factors that can influence consumers' decision to purchase organic and local fluid milk. The data is obtained from a 2015 nationwide online survey of …
Nutrition And Food Safety Literacy Status Among Food Pantry Supervisors And Volunteers In South Carolina, Catherine Elizabeth Harvey
Nutrition And Food Safety Literacy Status Among Food Pantry Supervisors And Volunteers In South Carolina, Catherine Elizabeth Harvey
All Theses
According to the USDA, food insecurity or the inadequate access to a sufficient amount of nutritious food, affects over 12.3 percent of the U.S. population including more than 680,000 South Carolinians (USDA, 2017a). These individuals find some relief from food banks and food pantries that provide meals, groceries and services to individuals experiencing hunger, poverty, food insecurity and inadequate nutritional intake. Because food banks and pantries operate on limited budgets, they rely heavily on volunteers to perform numerous activities such as handling, sorting and distributing food. For this reason, food safety education of volunteers is critical in minimizing foodborne illness …
Self-Repair And Self-Cleaning Of The Lepidopteran Proboscis, Suellen Floyd Pometto
Self-Repair And Self-Cleaning Of The Lepidopteran Proboscis, Suellen Floyd Pometto
All Dissertations
The proboscis of butterflies and moths is a key innovation contributing to the high diversity of the order Lepidoptera. In addition to taking nectar from angiosperm sources, many species take up fluids from overripe or sound fruit, plant sap, animal dung, and moist soil. The proboscis is assembled after eclosion of the adult from the pupa by linking together two elongate galeae to form one tube with a single food canal. How do lepidopterans maintain the integrity and function of the proboscis while foraging from various substrates?
The research questions included whether lepidopteran species are capable of total self-repair, how …

Targeted Edta Chelation Therapy With Albumin Nanoparticles To Reverse Arterial Calcification And Restore Vascular Health In Chronic Kidney Disease, Saketh Ram Karamched
All Dissertations
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death globally. An estimated 17.9 million people died from CVDs in 2016, with ~840,000 of them in the United States alone. Traditional risk factors, such as smoking, hypertension, and diabetes, are well discussed. In recent years, chronic kidney disease (CKD) has emerged as a risk factor of equal importance. Patients with mild-to-moderate CKD are much more likely to develop and die from CVDs than progress to end-stage renal failure. Vascular calcification (VC), typical in aging, several genetic and metabolic disorders, is now recognized as a strong and independent predictor of cardiovascular events …

The Effect Of Calcium On Botrytis Blight Of Petunia Flowers, Katherine Louisa Bennett
The Effect Of Calcium On Botrytis Blight Of Petunia Flowers, Katherine Louisa Bennett
All Theses
During greenhouse production, petunia plants are frequently exposed to conditions optimal for botrytis blight, caused by Botrytis cinerea. Once plants are flowering and ready to be shipped to retail, they are irrigated and tightly packed onto shipping carts, creating a humid environment conducive for Botrytis growth. At the retail environment, petunia flowers exhibit symptoms of botrytis blight, e.g., tan necrotic spots that coalesce making the plants unsellable. Fungicide applications are the primary strategy for Botrytis management; however, fungicide resistance is a common phenomenon that results in lack of fungicide efficacy. Alternative Botrytis management strategies are necessary. The goal of …
