The Effect Of Barrier Properties Of Non-Foil Retort Films On Shelf Life Of Oxygen Sensitive Foods, Mahalaxmi Dharman

All Theses

A simulated food product sensitive to oxygen, which was a mixture of tomato paste, water, and corn oil (2:2:1), was filled into five different barrier coated pouches, a foil barrier and a low barrier pouch. These pouches were thermally processed at 250¡F for 30 minutes and stored in darkness under accelerated conditions (45±2¡C and 50±2%RH) for up to 180 days.
The simulant was analyzed for lipid oxidation by TBARS and lycopene degradation by colorimetry (L*,a*,b* values and Hue angle). The oxygen permeability (OP) in all the pouches increased by 5 to 500 fold after retort. TBARS values in all pouches …

Determination Of Freshwater Algal Biomass And Sulfolipid Content As Functions Of Inorganic Carbon Treatment, Melissa Morella Aug 2011

Determination Of Freshwater Algal Biomass And Sulfolipid Content As Functions Of Inorganic Carbon Treatment, Melissa Morella

All Theses

Cultures of mixed freshwater algae were grown in open batch reactors made up of modified BG-11 media that contained 0, 25, 50 or 100% of the suggested inorganic carbon content (0, 0.5, 0.1 and 0.2 g/L Na2CO3) to assess the subsequent production of the high-value product, sulfoquinovosyl diacylglycerol (SQDG). After 25 days of growth, the reactors were composed of primarily Oscillatoria growth. All four reactors exhibited a trend of increasing biomass and alkalinity with time, and an initial increase then decrease in pH. The total inorganic carbon (TIC) in all reactors exhibited a mirrored, opposite trend …

Composing @Play, Jonathan Lashley Aug 2011

Composing @Play, Jonathan Lashley

All Theses

Modern college students traverse the boundaries of traditional literacy daily. Maturing alongside Web 2.0 and multimodal social networking, these young people tweet, blog, email, film, photograph, illustrate, hyperlink, and compose their lives regardless of formal instruction. Therefore rhetorically analyzing a student's recreational play with image, video, audio, and oral mediums often proves helpful for writing instructors who wish to better mentor and engage the communicative capacities of those born in the late 20th century and after. Yet few educators have actively pursued this line of inquiry over the last couple of decades. Many continue to favor traditional pairing of academic …

Risks Posed To Drinking Water Aquifers Due To Leakage Of Dissolved Co2 In Improperly Abandoned Wellbores, Kirk Ellison Aug 2011

Risks Posed To Drinking Water Aquifers Due To Leakage Of Dissolved Co2 In Improperly Abandoned Wellbores, Kirk Ellison

All Theses

In order to ensure safe long-term storage of carbon dioxide in geologic formations, the risks posed by improperly abandoned wells must be understood and minimalized. In addition to supercritical and gaseous CO2, brine containing dissolved CO2 poses a leakage risk. CO2 dissolution in brine leads to denser brine and better long-term storage security, but its leakage risk is not zero. Under specific circumstances with formation overpressure or overlying aquifer drawdown, dissolved brine can flow up improperly abandoned wells where it can potentially enter and contaminate drinking water aquifers. The possibility that depressurization in the wellbore may cause CO2 exsolution from …

A History-Dependent Nonwetting Phase Trapping Model For Multiphase Flow Characteristic Curves, Christopher Patterson Aug 2011

A History-Dependent Nonwetting Phase Trapping Model For Multiphase Flow Characteristic Curves, Christopher Patterson

All Theses

Characteristic curves used in numerical multiphase flow simulators describe relative permeability-saturation and capillary pressure-saturation relationships for flow simulations. Characteristic curves are typically non-hysteretic; meaning they are monotonic functions of saturation and are limited to a single value for residual saturation. Implications of residual saturation are important for environmental, petroleum, and geologic carbon sequestration modeling. However, hysteretic characteristic curves predict that trapped residual saturation depends on the local saturation history. The use of hysteretic characteristic curves is critical to predicting the residual saturation and ultimately the mobility of a nonwetting phase such as supercritical CO2 or a nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL). …

Magnolia : Polyploidy, Genome Size, And Refinement Of Protocols For Micropropagation, James Parris Aug 2011

Magnolia : Polyploidy, Genome Size, And Refinement Of Protocols For Micropropagation, James Parris

All Theses

The genus Magnolia includes over 250 species that range in ploidy level from diploid to hexaploid. Although there is basic information on ploidy levels of various species, sampling is limited with specific cultivars and hybrids. The objective of this research was to determine relative genome sizes and relationships to ploidy levels among a diverse collection of species, hybrids, and cultivars using flow cytometry. Nuclei were extracted, stained with 4’, 6–diamidino–2–phenylindole (DAPI), and analyzed using a flow cytometer. Relative genome sizes were determined using Pisum sativum as the reference genome. Genome size was calibrated with ploidy level for species with documented …

Investigation Of The Effect Of Aggregate Gradation On Open Graded Friction Course Mixtures, Talat Mansour Aug 2011

Investigation Of The Effect Of Aggregate Gradation On Open Graded Friction Course Mixtures, Talat Mansour

All Theses

An open graded friction course (OGFC) is a type of porous pavement that has been used to improve safety, mainly in wet conditions. However, this mix also has exhibited poor durability and strength which limits its use in some pavement applications. This research investigated the effect of aggregate gradation on the performance of OGFCs. Ten OGFC gradations which are used by twenty different states were compared. One asphalt binder was used throughout the research (PG76-22) and hydrated lime and cellulose fibers were also added to all of the mixes.
Several tests, using various standardized testing procedures, were used in this …

Thermal Destruction Of Geobacillus Stearothermophilus In Rendered Animal Co-Products, Yubo Zhang

All Theses

The non-pathogenic, heat stabile organism Geobacillus stearothermophilus was used during thermal death time testing of rendered poultry materials from three different rendering plants. G. stearothermophilus is an endospore–forming, Gram positive, thermophilic bacterium that is commonly used in the canning industry. A modification of the method of Kim and Naylor (1966) was used to prepare a G. stearothermophilus spore suspension. Uninoculated and inoculated rendering samples containing 50% fat and rendered crax were prepared. Lecithin and 2,3,5–triphenyl–2H–tetrazolium chloride (TTC) were used during sample enumeration to emulsify the high fat samples and to aid in detection of colonies, respectively. Commercial rendering cookers are …

Influence Of Environmental Conditions On Biofilm Formation Of Listeria Monocytogenes, Jing Li Aug 2011

Influence Of Environmental Conditions On Biofilm Formation Of Listeria Monocytogenes, Jing Li

All Theses

L. monocytogenes is a Gram-positive bacterium, ubiquitously distributed in the environment. It is the etiologic agent of listeriosis, a food-borne disease affecting humans and a variety of vertebrates. L. monocytogenes can form biofilm which is a multi-cellular layer of adherent bacteria surrounded by an extracellular polysaccharide matrix. Biofilm bacteria are extremely resistant to sanitizers and are difficult to be eradicated, therefore posing a big challenge to food processing industry and food service department.
In this work, we tested the biofilm formation in a number of L. monocytogenes serotypes under different environmental conditions, such as temperatures, pH and media (BHI, LB, …

A Rhetorical Approach To Cultural Literacies Across Media, Randy Nichols Aug 2011

A Rhetorical Approach To Cultural Literacies Across Media, Randy Nichols

All Dissertations

ABSTRACT
A Rhetorical Approach to Cultural Literacies Across Media finds exigency in the challenges presented to students and teachers by the growing emphasis on globalization, and by the increasing demands for literacy in new media. My research develops a theoretical model for a rhetorical reading of cultural ―texts‖ in the context of cross-cultural learning experiences. This model is built on the metaphor of ―stolons,‖ those botanical strands that serve to propagate plants across wide areas into a single woven organism, i.e., a lawn. Approaching ―culture‖ as a complex organic system of a multiplicity of sources, this model of literacies evaluates …

Lentiviral-Mediated Rnai Knockdown Yields A Novel Mouse Model For Studying Cyp2b Function, Basma Damiri

All Dissertations

The Cyp2b subfamily contains five members (Cyp2b9, Cyp2b10, Cyp2b13, Cyp2b19, and Cyp2b23) of which three (Cyp2b9, Cyp2b10, Cyp2b13) are hepatic enzymes involved in xenobiotic detoxification. In this study, we made a Cyp2b-knockdown mouse using lentiviral-promoted shRNA homologous to all five Cyp2b subfamily members in FVB/NJ mouse to characterize Cyp2b's role in xenobiotic detoxification. We assessed the in vivo function of Cyp2bs in the toxicity from pesticides (i.e. parathion) and drugs (i.e. zoxazolamine). We demonstrated that Cyp2b isoforms play a key role in parathion and Zoxazolamine metabolism and toxicity. In addition, we in partially phenotyped and characterized Cyp2b-KD model and assessed …

Effect Of Goldenseal (Hydrastis Canadensis) On Bacterial Multi Drug Resistant Efflux Pumps, Jyothi Rangineni Aug 2011

Effect Of Goldenseal (Hydrastis Canadensis) On Bacterial Multi Drug Resistant Efflux Pumps, Jyothi Rangineni

All Dissertations

Multi-Drug Resistance (MDR) efflux pumps have been increasingly reported in Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria. These efflux mechanisms pump out a wide variety of structurally unrelated antimicrobials thus leading to a low susceptibility due to lowered intracellular concentrations. The activity of such antimicrobials can be restored by the inhibition of the multi drug efflux pumps. Several MDR pump inhibitors which inhibit the efflux mechanisms in bacteria have been identified. Reserpine and verapamil are two such inhibitors, showing considerable effect on the MDR pumps. But the concentrations required to achieve these effects are too high to be clinically relevant. Reserpine …

Influence Of The Postharvest Environment On The Storage Potential And Propagation Performance Of Unrooted Cuttings Of Herbaceous Ornamentals, Amy Enfield

All Dissertations

Plants propagated from vegetative cuttings have become an increasingly important market in the United States. Significant economic losses occur annually due to poor performance, damage or death of cuttings. This occurs in large part due to the industry's lack of knowledge of the proper postharvest environments to provide to cuttings. This project was conducted to improve the understanding of the postharvest physiology of unrooted cuttings in order to optimize performance and longevity. Experiments were conducted to quantify the effect of temperature on respiration and ethylene production rates of unrooted cuttings. Additionally, the effect of the stock plant environment on the …

Biohydrogenation Of Docosahexaenoic Acid, Catherine Klein Aug 2011

Biohydrogenation Of Docosahexaenoic Acid, Catherine Klein

All Dissertations

Pathways of docosahexaenoic (DHA) biohydrogenation are not known; however, DHA is metabolized by ruminal microorganisms. The addition of DHA to the rumen alters the fatty acid profile of the rumen and milk and leads to increased trans-18:1 isomers, particularly trans-11 18:1 and 22 carbon fatty acids. This study included four in vitro experiments to identify if these are produced from DHA or if they come from other sources that are affected by DHA. In each experiment, ruminal microorganisms collected from a lactating Holstein cow were incubated in batch cultures for 0, 6, 24, and 48h and a uniformly 13C DHA …

Substantive Representation Of Women: The Case Of Ghana's Domestic Violence Law Of 2007, Patrick Tandoh-Offin

All Dissertations

This study investigates the role of civil society organizations (CSOs), especially gender-based groups in increasing the 'substantive' representation or the perspectives, views, and concerns of women in public policy-making in emerging democracies. In the last 30 years, calls for equality in the representation of women have received a boost mainly because of the disparity between the proportions of women in national populations and in legislatures. In Ghana where women are about 50 percent of the population, women constitute only 8.7 percent of the 230-member parliament as of January 2009. Such disparities produce critical implications for women's empowerment and participation in …

Contaminant Mass Transfer During Boiling In Fractured Geologic Media, Fei Chen Aug 2011

Contaminant Mass Transfer During Boiling In Fractured Geologic Media, Fei Chen

All Dissertations

Remediation of fractured geologic media contaminated with chlorinated volatile organic compounds that diffuse into the matrix is challenging using isothermal methods. Due to the low permeability of the matrix material and uncertainty of fracture networks, it is difficult to flush the system with any type of fluid or deliver remediation agents into the matrix. However, thermal methods have some promises. When the matrix is heated above water boiling temperature, depressurization in the fractures may trigger water boiling in the matrix, which, as a result, generates a large volumetric steam flow toward adjacent fractures, stripping the adsorbed or dissolved volatile contaminants …

Lipid Metabolism In Trypanosoma Brucei: Molecular Characterization Of Fatty Acid Synthesis And Uptake, Patrick Vigueira Aug 2011

Lipid Metabolism In Trypanosoma Brucei: Molecular Characterization Of Fatty Acid Synthesis And Uptake, Patrick Vigueira

All Dissertations

My doctoral studies focused on the fatty acid metabolism of the deadly protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma brucei. Fatty acid metabolism in T. brucei can be broadly divided into two pathways, synthesis and uptake. In Chapters 2-4 I describe experiments investigating the parasite's fatty acid synthesis pathway. Chapter 2 contains the initial characterization of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) in T. brucei. Knockdown of TbACC by RNA interference (RNAi) reduced parasite virulence in a mouse model, suggesting that TbACC has the potential to be utilized as a drug target. Chapters 3 and 4 explore the effects of two known ACC inhibitors, the …

Social Capital: Measurement, Dimensional Interactions, And Performance Implications, James Turner Aug 2011

Social Capital: Measurement, Dimensional Interactions, And Performance Implications, James Turner

All Dissertations

ABSTRACT
Recent OM literature conceptualizes social capital as being comprised of three inter-related dimensions: the relational dimension, the structural dimension, and the cognitive dimension. Existing research suggests that ocial capital offers firms the potential to leverage their interorganizational relationships to create sustainable advantage and superior performance opportunities for the firm.
However, despite the interest and attention of social capital theory among operations management (OM) and supply chain management (SCM) researchers, there is a surprising shortage of cohesive empirical research on social capital theory. The absence of reliable and valid empirical measures of social capital has limited OM researchers' ability to …

Turkish Informal Housing Settlements As A Typology For Modern Generative Processes In Urban Design: A Case Study Of Karanfilkoy And Fatih Sultan Mehmet Neighborhoods In Istanbul, Turkey, Noah Billig Aug 2011

Turkish Informal Housing Settlements As A Typology For Modern Generative Processes In Urban Design: A Case Study Of Karanfilkoy And Fatih Sultan Mehmet Neighborhoods In Istanbul, Turkey, Noah Billig

All Dissertations

Generative development processes adapt to existing conditions and unfold over time. Generative urban design theory proposes that successful communities must be planned and built incrementally, with current and future users participating throughout the process. The theory critiques the modern development processes of master planning and design that disregard adaptations through the building process. Successful examples of generatively built structures and neighborhoods are often cited from pre-20th century traditional societies and vernacular architecture. Generative approaches to urban design and planning need more modern 20th century examples and case studies of successful generatively built structures and communities.
Informal settlements are often cited …

Monumental-It: A 'Robotic-Wiki' Monument For Embodied Interaction In The Information World, Tarek Mokhtar

All Dissertations

ABSTRACT
Conventional monuments are concrete manifestations of memories without the capacity to reflect individual interpretations of history. In an increasingly digital society, however, there is a need for configurable monuments reflecting our contemporary, open and complex community. “Monumental-IT” reflects the dynamic and inclusive character of our time. Rather than static, Monumental-IT is a dynamic, robotic, intelligent environment reconfigured or “retuned” by citizens and by historical information accumulating on the World Wide Web. This information is periodically “coded,” altering the multi-sensorial physical-digital “Robotic-Wiki” components of Monumental-IT. Monumental-IT is designed to embody a new form of human-robotic interaction evolving from the monument …

Investigation Of Two-Phase Behavior In Capillary Evaporators With Liquid Core Visualization, Brian D'Entremont

All Dissertations

The Capillary Pumped Loop (CPL) and Loop Heat Pipe (LHP) are thermal management devices which are high performance derivatives of the conventional heat pipe. Both consist of a discrete evaporator containing a porous solid wick which is coupled via smoothed walled tubing to a condenser. In a CPL, fluid inventory is managed by a reservoir attached to the liquid line which is controlled in temperature. In an LHP, fluid inventory is managed passively by a compensation chamber which is integral to the evaporator.
In this study, a borescope was inserted into the liquid core and compensation chamber of LHP evaporators …

Changes In Expression Of Akt Pathway Proteins Following Treatment With Rg3 In Vitro, Kathryn Schalkoff Aug 2011

Changes In Expression Of Akt Pathway Proteins Following Treatment With Rg3 In Vitro, Kathryn Schalkoff

All Theses

To assess changes in AKT pathway signaling, a recombinant protein of the G3 domain of rat laminin-5 (rG3) that specifically binds the alpha subunit of integrins α6β1 and α6β4 expressed on cancer cells (e.g., MDA-MB-231) was produced. This recombinant protein is believed to interrupt the intracellular signaling events of the AKT pathway, causing a decrease in proliferation and survival of cells after treatment. Viability assays confirmed an apoptotic effect of rG3 on cells in a dose-dependent manner. However, data from gene expression studies of Caspase-9, GRB10, and CDKNIB proved non-conclusive that rG3 is acting upon gene expression, leading to the …
