Open Access, Peter Suber
Open Access, Peter Suber
A repository of copyright educational resources for higher education
In this concise introduction, Peter Suber tells us what open access is and isn’t, how it benefits authors and readers of research, how we pay for it, how it avoids copyright problems, how it has moved from the periphery to the mainstream, and what its future may hold. Distilling a decade of Suber’s influential writing and thinking about open access, this is the indispensable book on the subject for researchers, librarians, administrators, funders, publishers, and policy makers.
Effects Of Cytokinin On Multiplication And Rooting Of Aloe Barbadensis During Micropropagation On Agar And Liquid Medium, Jeffrey Adelberg, Jacqueline Naylor-Adelberg
Effects Of Cytokinin On Multiplication And Rooting Of Aloe Barbadensis During Micropropagation On Agar And Liquid Medium, Jeffrey Adelberg, Jacqueline Naylor-Adelberg
Publications
Aloe barbadensis (syn. Aloe vera) was micropropagated on agar and liquid medium at varied benzyladenine (BA) and meta-topolin (MT) concentrations
(0, 1, 3.2, and 10 μM) for three successive culture cycles and then transferred to a greenhouse for growth. MT induced multiplication at the highest concentration (10 μM) and BA produced the greatest number of plantlets (at 3.2 μM) with optimal multiplication at approximately 6 μM. Liquid medium did not affect multiplication rate when compared with agar, but plants were twice as large from
liquid as compared with those from agar at the time of transfer to the greenhouse. After …

Using Single-Case Participatory Action Research As A Methodology To Explore Appalachian Summer Camp Communities, Barry A. Garst, Nancy K. Franz, Brian Peters, Chris Smith, Sarah Baughman
Publications
Community educators have long known the value of direct experience in the learning process. Participatory action research extends this philosophy to the realm of research. This article examines the value of involving front line camp staff, members of the camp community in Appalachia as practitioner researchers with university scientists in studying the type and conditions of transformative learning in young adult camp staff. A young adult who was a camp community member assisted the researchers with methodology, data analysis, data interpretation, and dissemination of findings. This resulted in a more accurate, richer, and thicker description of the camp community member’s …

These guidelines seek to clarify exemptions for copying audiovisual works under Section 108(c) of the United States Copyright Act and thereby enhance the ability of librarians to preserve their video collections. They provide guidance for interpreting and applying the specific language of 108(c), clarifying definitions of ‘damaged’, ‘deteriorating’, ‘replacement copies’, ‘reasonable effort’, ‘fair price’, ‘obsolete’, ‘public’, ‘circulate’, and others, in a useful eight guideline overview.

Use Of Portable Electronic Assistive Technology To Improve Independent Job Performance Of Young Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, James Collins
Use Of Portable Electronic Assistive Technology To Improve Independent Job Performance Of Young Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, James Collins
All Dissertations
Poor employment outcomes for persons with intellectual disabilities (ID) persist, despite the development of legal policies designed to enhance access to gainful employment and to promote increased community integration. Recent data suggest that only 37% of young adults with ID obtain paid employment outside of the home. Among persons with ID who do obtain employment, career options are limited and nearly half are paid below minimum wage. Various strategies have been used to improve employment outcomes for those with ID, such as use of a job coach and teaching self-management strategies on the job site. These strategies often involve the …

Wycinanki: Production Of A Non-Photorealistic Rendered Short Film, Irena Rindos
All Theses
Animals have traditionally occupied a special role in human culture and media, and are also often the focus of today's computer-animated films. The computer graphics (CG) short, Wycinanki, examines the human-animal bond through the story of a woman who rescues animals in Poland. Additionally, Wycinanki draws on the cultural history of its protagonist with its unique paper-cut render style. The goal of this film is to engage viewers and enhance the staying power of the film's message via a compelling story and visuals.
A significant amount of environment and character development and testing was necessary to translate the 2D art …
Results From An Assesment Survey For School Food Service Directors And School Foodservice Managers Participating In The 2011-2012 South Carolina Farm To School Program, Maciel Ugalde

In South Carolina (SC), children aged 10-17 are ranked 13th in the United States for overweight and obesity (33.7%) according to the National Survey of Children's Health 2007. Fruit and vegetable intake in children and adolescents in the United States is below recommended levels (Lorson, Melgar-Quinonez, & Taylor, 2009). In SC, only 15% of the high school students consume fruits and vegetables five or more times per day. Fruit and vegetable consumption has been associated with reduced risk of chronic diseases (Epstein et al., 2001; Knai, Pomerleau, Lock, & McKee, 2006; Reichmann, 2009). Schools are identified as a key setting …

Perceived Ideological Bias In The College Classroom And The Role Of Student Reflective Thinking: A Proposed Model, Darren L. Linville, Joseph P. Mazer

The role ideology plays in the university classroom is a continual issue of debate. A common public perception has been that academics are a liberal elite, and that they, in the words of conservative activist David Horowitz, “behave as political advocates in the classroom, express opinions in a partisan manner on controversial issues irrelevant to the academic subject, and even grade students in a manner designed to enforce their conformity to professorial prejudices” (2007, p. 188). The Chronicle of Higher Education demonstrated how pervasive this view has become with a 2004 public opinion poll that found 51% of 1,000 individuals …
