The Implications Of A University Brand: Institutional Brand Alignment And The Experience Of Honors Students Attending Clemson University, Lori Pindar Aug 2014

The Implications Of A University Brand: Institutional Brand Alignment And The Experience Of Honors Students Attending Clemson University, Lori Pindar

All Dissertations

In this research, the process by which honors students interact with the institutional brand and become part of their university is examined. Branding and the brand experience is the process by which institutions differentiate themselves from other competing organizations. It was assumed that the degree to which honor students consume the brand impacts not only how they understand their student identity on campus but also their beliefs about their education, their campus community, and their own intellectual and social development. A single-site case study approach was employed to illuminate and provide an in-depth description and analysis of the effects of …

Effect Of Patellar Component Thickness On Patellar Kinematics And Patellofemoral Joint Function Following Total Knee Replacement, Xin Xie Aug 2014

Effect Of Patellar Component Thickness On Patellar Kinematics And Patellofemoral Joint Function Following Total Knee Replacement, Xin Xie

All Dissertations

Nowadays, instances of anterior knee pain and patellar fracture are more and more widely considered as significant complications following total knee replacement (TKR). The inability to freely flex/extend the knee after surgery has a critical influence on patients’ daily activities, which is one of the most common mechanical indications for TKR revisions. An overtly thick or thin patellar component selected intraoperatively in TKR surgery may cause postoperative complications, including excessive quadriceps tendon force, patellofemoral joint reaction force, and joint pain in TKR patients during knee joint motion.

The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effect of varying …

Translating Knowledge Of Autism Spectrum Disorders To Action Through Tool Development And Exploration, Rebecca A. Garcia Aug 2014

Translating Knowledge Of Autism Spectrum Disorders To Action Through Tool Development And Exploration, Rebecca A. Garcia

All Dissertations

Translational processes are needed to move research development, methods, and techniques into clinical application. The knowledge to action framework organizes this bench to bedside process through three phases including: research, translation, and institutionalization without being specific to one disease or condition. The overall goal of this research is to bridge gaps in the translational process from assay development to disease detection through a mixed methods approach. A literature review identifies gaps associated with intestinal permeability and autism spectrum disorders. Mining social media related to autism and GI symptoms captures self-reported or observed data, identifies patterns and themes within the data, …

High-Productivity Membrane Adsorbers: Polymer Surface-Modification Studies For Ion-Exchange And Affinity Bioseparations, Heather Chenette Aug 2014

High-Productivity Membrane Adsorbers: Polymer Surface-Modification Studies For Ion-Exchange And Affinity Bioseparations, Heather Chenette

All Dissertations

This Dissertation centers on the surface-modification of macroporous membranes to make them selective adsorbers for different proteins, and the analysis of the performance of these membranes relative to existing technology. Traditional chromatographic separations for the isolation and purification of proteins implement a column packed with resin beads or gel media that contain specific binding ligands on their exposed surface area. The productivity of this process is balanced by the effective use of the binding sites within the column and the speed at which the separation can take place, in addition to the need to maintain sufficient protein purity and bioactivity. …

Development Of Poly(Lactic Acid)-Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Nanoparticles For The Delivery Of Non- Toxic Drug In Combination Therapy For The Treatment Of Glioblastoma And Neuroblastoma, Olivia Grace Decroes

All Theses

lioblastoma and neuroblastoma are both solid-form tumors. Glioblastomas primarily reside in the brain, while neuroblastomas are found in the sympathetic nervous system. Both glioblastoma and neuroblastoma re classified as orphan diseases, which affect less than 200,000 individuals a year. Over the course of 5 years, 40% of patients diagnosed with neuroblastomas and only 6% of patients diagnosed will glioblastomas will be living.73,74. Glioblastoma and neuroblastoma tumors possess a gene known as MGMT. MGMT is used by tumors as a DNA repair mechanism, which increases the likelihood these tumors will become resistant to traditional drug therapies.28,37 Other pathways, such as the …

Learning As Leisure Among Older Adults: Triggers, Motivations And Constraints Of Olli Members, Sara M. Baral Aug 2014

Learning As Leisure Among Older Adults: Triggers, Motivations And Constraints Of Olli Members, Sara M. Baral

All Theses

Individuals age 65 and older make up an increasingly large proportion of the population in the United States (U.S. Census Bureau, 2011). Due to retirement, this cohort experiences an increase in discretionary time to participate in old and new leisure activities (Nimrod, 2008). This study used concepts from Leisure Innovation Theory to investigate what happens when one participates in a new leisure activity. While participating in leisure activities, older adults experience a variety of motivations (e.g. Chen & Pang, 2012; Lamb & Brady, 2005) and constraints (e.g. Kleiber, McGuire, Aybar-Damali & Norman, 2008). The concepts of triggers, motivation, and constraints …

A Comparison Of Saponin And Tween 80 On The Solubility And The Degradation Enhancement Of Fluoranthene And The Influence Of Laccase On Fluoranthene Degradation, Stacia Ballew Aug 2014

A Comparison Of Saponin And Tween 80 On The Solubility And The Degradation Enhancement Of Fluoranthene And The Influence Of Laccase On Fluoranthene Degradation, Stacia Ballew

All Theses

The ubiquitous contamination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the environment require an economical approach as well as effective remediation techniques in the removal of these contaminants. Through the use of more eco-friendly and economically available biosurfactants, such as saponin, there is a possibility they could prove to be more useful surfactants than conventional synthetic surfactants for the solubilization of fluoranthene (FLA). Enhanced solubility would potentially facilitate the increased degradation by S. paucimobilis EPA505. The addition of laccase produced by Pleurotus ostreatus, a white rot fungus that produces enzymes known to facilitate or assist in the degradation of fluoranthene (FLA), …

Modeling And Design Strategy Of Online Advertising Ecosystem, Qiuchen Wang Aug 2014

Modeling And Design Strategy Of Online Advertising Ecosystem, Qiuchen Wang

All Theses

Internet has undoubtedly become a major and effective medium for advertising, and it will soon replace traditional advertising media. Online advertising ecosystem is consisted of thousands of agents, which can be divided into three types: users, advertisers and publishers. Each type of the agents plays an important role in the ecosystem. However, it is generally very difficult to model such a complex and large-scale system, not to mention the design of suitable strategies for the ecosystem. On the other side, replicator-mutator (RM) dynamics combine tools from evolutionary dynamics of populations, complex networks, and control theory to study evolution of behavior …

Design And Simulation Of A Nerve Tracer System For Vagotomy Surgery, Guneet Bedi Aug 2014

Design And Simulation Of A Nerve Tracer System For Vagotomy Surgery, Guneet Bedi

All Theses

The vagus nerve is one of the most important nerves in the human body. It is associated with a plethora of functions one of them being acid secretion inside the stomach to aid in digestion. The cerebrum part of the brain initiates an action potential that is propagated along the vagus nerve to the parietal cells that secrete acid. In some cases, the cerebrum over stimulates the parietal cells leading to excess acid secretion, more than is needed for the digestion process. This excess acid leads to the formation of open sores along the stomach lining called gastric/peptic ulcers. In …

Potential Effects Of Geologic Storage Of Co2 On Surface Water And Shallow Groundwater, Shuangshuang Xie Aug 2014

Potential Effects Of Geologic Storage Of Co2 On Surface Water And Shallow Groundwater, Shuangshuang Xie

All Theses

ABSTRACT Storage of supercritical phase CO2 in deep saline aquifers is being considered to reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and this process is expected to increase the pressure in these deep aquifers. One potential consequence of pressurization is an increase in the upward flux of saline water. Saline groundwater occurs naturally at shallow depths in many sedimentary basins, so an upward flux of solutes could degrade the quality of aquifers, and threaten aquatic ecosystems where groundwater discharge is important. The objective of this research is to evaluate the impacts associated with increasing the upward flux of saline water as …
