Post-Hurricane Fuel Dynamics And Forest Regeneration Of Coastal Pine Stands In Southeast United States, Shanyue Guan
Post-Hurricane Fuel Dynamics And Forest Regeneration Of Coastal Pine Stands In Southeast United States, Shanyue Guan
All Theses
Hurricanes have long been powerful and recurring disturbances in many coastal forest ecosystems. Intense hurricanes often produce a large amount of dead fuels within their affected forests, but how post-hurricane fuel complex changes with time, due to decomposition and management such as salvage, and the fire behavior affected by the changed fuel load remains largely unknown. To better understand the fuel and regeneration dynamics, field measurement and modeling were conducted within undamaged stands and hurricane damaged stands, including salvaged and unsalvaged stands in southern pine forests impacted by hurricane Hugo (1989), Opal (1995), Katrina (2005), and Ike (2008). Urbanization significantly alters the hydrological cycle, leading to reduced infiltration, increased flooding, and reduced water quality. Proper management of storm-water runoff is necessary to mitigate these undesired impacts. The use of Best Management Practices (BMP) and Low Impact Development (LID) is becoming more common day by day for this purpose and perforated pipes are one of the main components of these LIDs and BMPs. This poster presents results from a CFD model that combines both porous media flow and pipe flow. The model was developed in ANSYS FLUENT to examine the hydraulic behavior (stage-discharge relationship) of a porous pipe shrouded …

NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has obtained, through partnerships with private sector, an engineered soil to enhance removal of fecal bacteria when used in conjunction with stormwater Best Management Practices, such as bioretention cells. The efficacy of this media is being tested at a site in Lockwood Folly, NC where a TMDL for fecal coliforms was approved by the NC Department of Natural Resources in 2010 to address shellfish harvesting impairments in the nearby estuary. Mechanisms for bacterial removal are a\ributed to: (1) retention of particles to which microbes adsorb and (2) mortality due to grazing by protozoans harbored by …

Benchmarking Professional Development Practices Across Youth-Serving Organizations: Implications For Extension, Barry A. Garst, Sarah Baughman, Nancy Franz
Benchmarking Professional Development Practices Across Youth-Serving Organizations: Implications For Extension, Barry A. Garst, Sarah Baughman, Nancy Franz
Publications
Examining traditional and contemporary professional development practices of youth-serving organizations can inform practices across Extension, particularly in light of the barriers that have been noted for effectively developing the professional competencies of Extension educators. With professional development systems changing quickly, particularly through online education and blended learning opportunities, benchmarks need to guide new research around best practices in professional development. Although many program providers have not established benchmarks for professional development, a few cases exist. This article examines the current state of professional development practices of youth-serving organizations and offers recommendations for improving Extension professional development practices.

Review Of Lejeune, Maud. Pourtraits Divers De Jean De Tournes: Edition Critique Et Fac-Similé Du Tirage De 1556, Kelly Digby Peebles
Publications
Pourtraits divers is an unusual book of illustrations, printed in octavo format in the Lyonnais workshop of Jean de Tournes. A first edition contains no text apart from the place of publication, printer and date (Lyon: Jean de Tournes, 1556). A second edition (1557) also bears the title Pourtraits divers. The work in question is a collaborative project between printer Jean de Tournes and illustrator Bernard Salomon (aka Le Petit Bernard), both noted figures in the print culture of Renaissance Lyon. Maud Lejeune’s study, a book version of the thesis written for her maîtrise, offers a facsimile of the 1556 …
