Evaluation Of Next Generation Capillary-Channeled Polymer Fibers And The Implementation Of C-Cp Fiber Modification Modalities On Non-Fiber Substrates, Paul Haupt-Renaud
Evaluation Of Next Generation Capillary-Channeled Polymer Fibers And The Implementation Of C-Cp Fiber Modification Modalities On Non-Fiber Substrates, Paul Haupt-Renaud
All Theses
Developing new stationary phases for liquid chromatography is continuing to drive high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) into the future. In this regard the Marcus’ group has been leveraging the continued advances of Capillary-Channeled Polymer (C-CP) fibers in an attempt to meet the demand of high throughput biomarcomolecule chromatography. Separation mechanisms studied include: ion-exchange (IC), reversed phase (RP), affinity, hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC). In this work, the next generation of C-CP fiber stationary phases was thoroughly evaluated with respect to hydrodynamic concerns relating to protein chromatography. Traditionally C-CP fibers have eight channels that run co-linearly along the length of the fiber. …
Diminishing Connections: Nature, The Domestic, And Thingness, Mary Elizabeth Cooke
Diminishing Connections: Nature, The Domestic, And Thingness, Mary Elizabeth Cooke
All Theses
In my work I am examining Nature/Culture dualism manifested in contemporary material culture through domestic objects. I'm surprised by how many things around me (furniture, textiles, wall coverings, etc.) reference something natural but how there isn't anything one would consider "Nature". It is evident that traces of the natural are all around us but it is mediated through man-made things. It is as if Nature has been co-opted, commoditized, and grafted into what defines the domestic realm. I question if artificial and abstracted representations of Nature within the domestic space, manufactured or hand made, have relegated Nature to the level …
Can The Center Hold? Grappling With The Decline Of A Small-City Downtown In Meridian, Mississippi, Meredith Leigh Wilson
Can The Center Hold? Grappling With The Decline Of A Small-City Downtown In Meridian, Mississippi, Meredith Leigh Wilson
All Theses
Meridian, Mississippi, is a poster child for the Post-War Era decline of America's downtowns. The center city has been in steady decline since the rise of automobile culture and the opening of Meridian’s first suburban mall in the 1970s. This study analyzes how a historic preservation ethic may better inform the economic development of a downtown with an emphasis on establishing best practices for other small American cities. In focusing on a small, southern city, this paper fortifies a weak area in the study of preservation best practices related to downtown revitalization, which has focused on larger cities outside the …
An Investigation Into The Effects Of Low-Dose Gamma Radiation On Porcine Digital Flexor Tendons, Megan Keira Robson
An Investigation Into The Effects Of Low-Dose Gamma Radiation On Porcine Digital Flexor Tendons, Megan Keira Robson
All Theses
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and radiation therapy is used as a treatment method on millions of patients each year. While the biological response of tendon tissue to high-dose radiation has been investigated over the years, the effects of low-dose gamma radiation on tendons is not well understood. The goal of this research is to investigate the impact of clinically relevant low dose gamma radiation on tendon tissue. Fresh tendons were harvested from mature porcine forefeet and exposed to 5 Gray of Cesium gamma radiation. Histological and chemical data was obtained over the course of …

Is It 10-4 To Be A Complaining Cop? Antecedents And Consequences Of Complaining At Work Among Police Officers, Megan E. Morgan
All Theses
Previous research has explored complaining in the context of consumer behavior and complaints made against organizations, yet there are gaps in the literature concerning complaining in the workplace among police officers. The present study explored the audiences of complaints expressed by police officers, the topics of dissatisfaction experienced by officers, whether expressed or not, and the organizational antecedents and consequences that may accompany complaining at work. Police officers in a suburban southeastern police department were surveyed to investigate these areas. Results indicated that officers primarily complain around their peers at work, and the correlates of complaining differ by the type …
Will The Real Captain America Please Stand-Up: Redefining The Patriotic Hero Post-9/11, Michelle Anne Lloyd
Will The Real Captain America Please Stand-Up: Redefining The Patriotic Hero Post-9/11, Michelle Anne Lloyd
All Theses
Art, in all of its forms, has always reflected the moods and mores of the society that create it. This is true with the creating of comic books as well. Just as hardboiled novels reflected the bitterness and harshness of The Great Depression, a post-9/11 superhero had to become darker. Steve Rogers was plagued with PTSD following his revival in the 1960s and has abandoned the stars and stripes in the past, but he was not -- is not -- equipped to be Captain America in the 21st Century. The trend in comic books, and Science Fiction, following 9/11 favored …
In Vitro Studies Of Heparin-Coated Magnetic Nanoparticles For Potential Use In The Treatment Of Neointimal Hyperplasia, Andrew Hargett
In Vitro Studies Of Heparin-Coated Magnetic Nanoparticles For Potential Use In The Treatment Of Neointimal Hyperplasia, Andrew Hargett
All Theses
With the ever-increasing prevalence of atherosclerosis, procedures such as angioplasty and stenting have become common practice, both of which are simple techniques spouting relatively satisfying results for the past several decades. While successful in opening of occluded vessels, these therapies can be met down the line with thrombosis or even repeated occlusion of the vessel, known as restenosis. Similar to the issues faced within oncology, treatment of this restenosis via widespread drug administration throughout the body is not desirable. Cardiovascular and other medical fields have begun looking into the use of magnetic nanoparticles as a drug delivery vessel. Previously, our …
Evaluation Of An Inexpensive Sensor To Measure Soil Color, Roxanne Stiglitz
Evaluation Of An Inexpensive Sensor To Measure Soil Color, Roxanne Stiglitz
All Theses
Soil color determination can be subjective due to environmental conditions and human error. The objectives of this study were to examine the precision of a relatively inexpensive color sensor (NixTM Pro); to compare soil color measurements using this color sensor to human determination by soil science professionals using the standard Munsell Color Chart; and to compare the accuracy of this color sensor to a laboratory standard colorimeter (Konica Minolta CR-400). Sensor measurements were compared to the soil color chart by converting the Nix Pro values to Munsell soil color codes using BabelColor conversion software. Thirty-one Cecil (Fine, kaolinitic, thermic Typic …

In recent years it has become a prominent part of the social media sphere, but given its relatively sudden arrival and unique nature, many teams are still trying to figure how best to use it. This research looks at why fans use Snapchat to follow sports from a Uses and Gratifications perspective in order to understand their motivations as well as ascertain what may be the best practices for teams to use on the platform. In order to do this, research was conducted in two …
Faces Of Feminism In Early Twentieth Century Egypt, Sandra N. Mokalled
Faces Of Feminism In Early Twentieth Century Egypt, Sandra N. Mokalled
All Theses
In the first half of the twentieth century, during Egypt's "liberal age," middle- and upper- class Egyptian women carved a place for themselves in the public sphere. For the first time, women publically demanded social and political rights that had been withheld in Egypt's traditionally patriarchal society. Female figures emerged as leaders of the Egyptian women's movement, and the media followed the actions of these leaders and attempted to glimpse parts of their private affairs. As pioneering feminists, they were the first generation of women to be publically scrutinized by the media. Although the feminist movement during this period was …

The Role Of Social Media As A Constraint Negotiation Resource: Implication For Collegiate Women's Sporting Event Attendance, Yuilynn Miao
The Role Of Social Media As A Constraint Negotiation Resource: Implication For Collegiate Women's Sporting Event Attendance, Yuilynn Miao
All Theses
Clemson University has experienced low attendance rates at women's sporting events over the past few years. Undergraduate students are possibly limited in their intention to attend these events by various constraints (i.e., intrapersonal, interpersonal and structural). Although these constraints can reduce students' intention to attend women's sporting events, the negotiation process can reduce and possibly overcome the impact of these barriers through various resources and strategies. Social media is one popular negotiation tool that provides equal opportunity for many potential users and is not limited by time or location. This study framed social media as a constraint negotiation resource, exploring …
Measuring And Interpreting Vertical Displacements Related To Shallow Hydrologic Processes, Colby Thrash
Measuring And Interpreting Vertical Displacements Related To Shallow Hydrologic Processes, Colby Thrash
All Theses
An instrument, called a DELTA extensometer, has been developed to measure vertical displacement in the subsurface with a resolution of less than 0.01 μm. The instrument is 2-m-long, and it is pushed below a vertical boring where it is anchored to the soil at either end. Displacement of the anchors responds to changes in mass load caused by changes in water content as well as other factors. The goal of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of using subsurface displacement data to estimate average changes in moisture content and other hydrologic processes. Ten extensometers were successfully installed in saprolite, …
Designing And Animating A Character Sprite With Modern Techniques, Wynton Redmond
Designing And Animating A Character Sprite With Modern Techniques, Wynton Redmond
All Theses
High-quality 2D animation for video game production is both strenuous and time consuming. Traditionally, 2D game animation consisted of drawing each frame by hand and processing it into a bitmap for use in-game. As every frame was individually drawn, it was difficult to create enough drawings for smooth animation as well as keep form consistent between frames. Although, this technique usually resulted in a strong sense of 3D volume and realism when well executed. Current technology allows for faster 2D animation workflows using interpolation and bone systems as well as greater consistency, smoothness, and efficiency, but oftentimes the results lose …
"A Woman To Command Men": Becky Hammon's First Year As An Assistant In The Nba And Conversations About Sport Culture On Twitter, Kelly Frances Gramlich
"A Woman To Command Men": Becky Hammon's First Year As An Assistant In The Nba And Conversations About Sport Culture On Twitter, Kelly Frances Gramlich
All Theses
Previous research has shown that Twitter has become a place where cultural discussions can occur and that Twitter has the potential to undermine hierarchies of authority and power by affording a voice to those who are not heard in the mainstream media. Becky Hammon's hiring as the first full-time female assistant coach in the NBA provided a rich opportunity to utilize Twitter as a way to study perceptions of Hammon throughout her first year on the NBA sidelines and specifically, as a way to hear both mainstream and marginalized voices. Radian6 was used to collect tweets mentioning "Becky Hammon" throughout …
Investigating Older Adults' Trust, Causal Attributions, And Perception Of Capabilities In Robots As A Function Of Robot Appearance, Task, And Reliability, Jessica Jane Branyon
Investigating Older Adults' Trust, Causal Attributions, And Perception Of Capabilities In Robots As A Function Of Robot Appearance, Task, And Reliability, Jessica Jane Branyon
All Theses
The purpose of the current study was to examine the extent to which the appearance, task, and reliability of a robot is susceptible to stereotypic thinking. Stereotypes can influence the types of causal attributions that people make about the performance of others. Just as causal attributions may affect an individual’s perception of other people, it may similarly affect perceptions of technology. Stereotypes can also influence perceived capabilities of others. That is, in situations where stereotypes are activated, an individual’s perceived capabilities are typically diminished. The tendency to adjust perceptions of capabilities of others may translate into levels of trust placed …
More Than Just A Job: Exploring College Media Advisers' Experiences In Student Development And Higher Education, Blythe K. Steelman
More Than Just A Job: Exploring College Media Advisers' Experiences In Student Development And Higher Education, Blythe K. Steelman
All Theses
College media advisers are an incredibly involved type of staff member, often serving as a "cultural navigator" for their students and the organizations they advise. As used throughout this study, Strayhorn's (2015) term cultural navigator indicates someone who works to guide students through an educational experience or life-chapter. As such, this concept frames the research presented in this study. This research looks at the experience of being a college media adviser, including challenges and functions of the position, through the use of a qualitative phenomenological study. Twelve self-identified college media advisers located across the United States were interviewed. From these …
Expression Patterns Of The Major Vault Protein (Mvp) And Cellular Vault Particles In Aquatic Animal Models, Alyssa L. Margiotta
Expression Patterns Of The Major Vault Protein (Mvp) And Cellular Vault Particles In Aquatic Animal Models, Alyssa L. Margiotta
All Theses
Cellular vaults are ubiquitous 13 mega Da multi-subunit structures that may have a role in nucleo-cytoplasmic transport. Seventy percent of the vault's mass consists of a ≈100 kDa protein, the major vault protein (MVP). Elevated MVP was first recognized as lung resistance protein (LRP) because metastatic lymphoid tumor cells in the lung over-expressed this protein following acquired resistance to traditional chemotherapy. Previous work in our lab screened a cDNA library constructed from channel catfish monocytes (42TA cells), whereby MVP was sequenced and found to be highly conserved compared to other vertebrates. This sequence was recently expressed as a recombinant protein …

Injury and degeneration of rotator cuff tendons are frequent causes of shoulder disability globally, commonly affecting athletes and the elderly. Annually, there are approximately 250,000 surgeries related to the rotator cuff performed in the United States.1 With rotator cuff tears being the largest cause of rotator cuff surgery, between 10% and 40% of all rotator cuff tears are classified as massive, extending over 5 cm in length. 2,3,4,5,6 The success rate of massive rotator cuff tear repair is variable, with re-tear rates ranging from 38% to 90% depending on factors such as patient age, tear chronicity, and overall tissue quality.7,8,9,10 …
Cellular Interactions Underlying Vascular Calcification In Diabetes, Lisa Ann Larrew
Cellular Interactions Underlying Vascular Calcification In Diabetes, Lisa Ann Larrew
All Theses
Diabetes mellitus is a disease that affects about 387 million people throughout the world. It is characterized by the body's inability to secrete or respond to insulin properly. As a result, diabetes mellitus is associated with hyperglycemia, the cause of many severe complications. Calcification in blood vessel walls, one of the most adverse complications of diabetes, may trigger heart failure, hypertension, plaque rupture, stroke, and coronary ischemia. In vitro and in vivo studies suggest that vascular calcification is a regulated process involving inhibitors and activators and resembling osteogenesis in bone. High glucose levels have been shown to induce endothelial cell …
Impact Of Player Quality On Demand In Major League Soccer: A Study Of Star And International Player Effect On Match Attendance, Byungiu Kang
Impact Of Player Quality On Demand In Major League Soccer: A Study Of Star And International Player Effect On Match Attendance, Byungiu Kang
All Theses
This paper examines how one of the determinants of demand for sports-player quality-influenced Major League Soccer during the seasons from 2004 to 2014. The impact is evaluated by estimating star and international players effect on match attendance. A star player is defined by their base salary, by their performance, and by their popularity. An international player is defined by his nationality. In terms of star effect, this study finds evidence that star players defined only by salary information exhibit a positive relationship on match attendance; especially, a top-10 paid player appears to produce a statistically significant increase in attendance. This …
Effects Of The Indirubin Derivative E804 On Glioblastoma Associated Immunomodulation, Haley R. Houke
Effects Of The Indirubin Derivative E804 On Glioblastoma Associated Immunomodulation, Haley R. Houke
All Theses
Glioblastomas are the most common malignant brain tumor, with an annual incidence of 6 in 100,000 people. Conventional treatment modalities, including chemotherapy and radiation, are toxic and cause a decrease in quality of life as the disease progresses. Several investigators have turned to pharmacologically active derivatives of herbal remedies as less-toxic alternatives. Indirubin, a dark red isomer of indigo, is known to be effective in treating chronic inflammation and some forms of cancer, and the mechanism is, in part, due to activity as a ligand for the transcription factor aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). As with most AhR ligands, indirubin induces …
Mind Over Morals: Character Morality And Viewer Need For Cognition As Predictors Of Anticipated Enjoyment Of A Television Show, Amanda E. Moore
Mind Over Morals: Character Morality And Viewer Need For Cognition As Predictors Of Anticipated Enjoyment Of A Television Show, Amanda E. Moore
All Theses
Using affective disposition theory (ADT) as a theoretical framework, this study examined the role of need for cognition (NFC) in a potential viewer’s desire to consume media content featuring a morally ambiguous character. According to ADT, enjoyment is driven by a viewer’s moral evaluations of characters (Zillmann & Cantor, 1972). Another body of research, which examines media consumption through the lens of uses and gratifications theory, emphasizes individual differences in a viewer’s desire to enjoy and select media content (Katz, Blumler, Gurevitch, 1973). One such individual difference that has emerged as a predictor of media selection is need for cognition …
"Continuing To Work Would Keep My Life Normal"- A Phenomenology Of Labor And Work Among Mothers With Cancer, Kimberly Workman
"Continuing To Work Would Keep My Life Normal"- A Phenomenology Of Labor And Work Among Mothers With Cancer, Kimberly Workman
All Theses
In 1989, years after many women had gained acceptance for working outside of the home, Hochschild (1989) coined the term "second shift labor" referring to the double burden of paid and unpaid labor experienced by working women. Hochschild's work highlights social inequality and suggests that the perceived step towards equality that was commonly associated with women's right to work actually had an adverse effect. It resulted in women, especially those with young children, working double shifts' the first one being their paid formal employment, and the second one being the housework at home. However, just as the women's rights movement …
Designing For Multigenerational Community: Creating A Supportive Environment For Young And Old In The U.S.A., Tatiana Epimakhova
Designing For Multigenerational Community: Creating A Supportive Environment For Young And Old In The U.S.A., Tatiana Epimakhova
All Theses
It is well-known that many countries face tremendous challenges triggered by the aging of their population. The increasing percentage of the population that is reaching or at retirement age and rising life expectancy have brought about increasing multigenerativity, a new social phenomenon, when different generations live at the same time longer (Höpflinger, F., 2008). These demographic changes will be complemented with socio-cultural transformations, such as changing the perception of old age, the decrease in traditional multigenerational extended families living together and the growing conditions of multi-locational families. These undergoing changes significantly impact all niches of society: labor markets and social …
Development Of Low-Cost Impedimetric Biosensors For Clinical Diagnostics And Water Testing, Andrew Lehron Cobb
Development Of Low-Cost Impedimetric Biosensors For Clinical Diagnostics And Water Testing, Andrew Lehron Cobb
All Theses
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that waterborne diseases alone account for over 3.4 million deaths per year. With such a high mortality, the need to provide a fast and accurate means of identifying the cause of the microbial infection is fundamental to the quality of care and paramount to public health. In resource-poor settings a shortage of clinics pose a major problem, as patients are required to travel long distances, many of which cannot afford the return trip to retrieve their test results. Between visits most clinics are limited to microscopic analyses, telehistology, or media-based metabolic tests, which can …
Investigation Of Geometric Effect On The Ultrasonic Processing Of Liquids, Pravan Pasumarthi
Investigation Of Geometric Effect On The Ultrasonic Processing Of Liquids, Pravan Pasumarthi
All Theses
Ultrasonic processing of liquids is used in many engineering fields, from sonochemistry to material processing. Acoustic cavitation and acoustic streaming are the two key phenomena responsible for the ultrasonic processing applications. Both of them are non-linear effects of ultrasonic wave propagation in liquids and are extremely hard to characterize either analytically or experimentally. This meant that there is limited knowledge about the interactions between the various parameters that affect the extent of the acoustic cavitation and streaming generated during the ultrasonic processing of liquids. In the current study, it was hypothesized that the geometric configuration of the ultrasonic processing equipment …

Exploring The Connections Between Literary Places, Literary Texts, And Tourist Performance, Alana Nicole Seaman
All Dissertations
Books and travel are inseparable. From inspiring destination choices to offering vacationers a diversion during their journeys, books and other literature have long been a part of the travel experience. In many cases, thousands of tourists trek to places of literary importance in order to participate in literature-inspired activities such as wading in the serene waters of Walden Pond (Mass. State Parks, 2015), jump frogs in the real Calaveras County (Calaveras County, 2015), and go fly-fishing in the actual river from A River Runs Through It (Hepworth, 1992). However, in many cases these tourist “performances†also appear to be reliant …
