Friedrichstrasse Skyscraper: Transfiguration Through Glass, Or Vertical And Horizontal Transparencies: Mies Van Der Rohe, Ufuk Ersoy

Publications

Mies van der Rohe’s entry for the Friedrichstrasse Skyscraper Competition of 1921, a project he named the “Wabe” (Honeycomb) construction, not only epitomized the polemics then current about the renovation of Berlin as a modern metropolis, but also represented a radical shift in the architect’s own viewpoint – his views of modern life, modern construction, and modern materials, particularly glass.

Wearing The City: Memory P(A)Laces, Smartphones, And The Rhetorical Invention Of Embodied Space, Jason Kalin, Jordan Frith Jun 2016

Wearing The City: Memory P(A)Laces, Smartphones, And The Rhetorical Invention Of Embodied Space, Jason Kalin, Jordan Frith

Publications

This article extends research on the production of embodied space by focusing on the relations between place and memory. Beginning with a consideration of how wearable technologies enable new spatial practices within the constructed order of the city, we develop a conceptual framework to understand these spatial practices by returning to the rhetorical art of memory and the building of memory palaces. The art of memory, exemplified by memory palaces, offers a rhetorical resource for understanding how smartphones as wearable technologies may be incorporated—that is, brought into the body, as integral to the production of embodied spatial memories. We argue …

Marketing Online Workshops, Anne Grant, Diana Finkle Jun 2016

Marketing Online Workshops, Anne Grant, Diana Finkle

Publications

The movement of library instruction to the online environment is only one way that librarians are seeking to meet the just-in-time needs of their patrons. Marketing of this type of instruction should reflect these changes by speaking directly to the needs of the patrons rather than to the topic of the sessions. Effective marketing of online workshops is best achieved by making a plan, diversifying modes of outreach, and by creating consistency with the library and university brands and goals.

Enrichment Of Diluted Cell Populations From Large Sample Volumes Using 3d Carbon-Electrode Dielectrophoresis, Monsur Islam, Rucha Natu, Maria Fernanda Larraga-Martinez, Rodrigo Martinez-Duarte

Publications

Here, we report on an enrichment protocol using carbon electrodedielectrophoresis to isolate and purify a targeted cell population from sample volumes up to 4 ml. We aim at trapping, washing, and recovering an enriched cell fraction that will facilitate downstream analysis. We used an increasingly diluted sample of yeast, 106–102 cells/ml, to demonstrate the isolation and enrichment of few cells at increasing flow rates. A maximum average enrichment of 154.2 ± 23.7 times was achieved when the sample flow rate was 10 μl/min and yeast cells were suspended in low electrically conductive media that maximizes dielectrophoresis trapping. A COMSOL …

Lost In The Shuffle: Deaf-Parented Interpreters And Their Paths To Interpreting Careers, Amy Williamson May 2016

Lost In The Shuffle: Deaf-Parented Interpreters And Their Paths To Interpreting Careers, Amy Williamson

International Journal of Interpreter Education

Deaf-parented individuals have experiences as child language brokers (Napier, in press) and as native and heritage users of signed language (Compton, 2014) prior to engaging in a formal interpreter education program or seeking training to become an interpreter. Anecdotally, deaf-parented interpreters say that educational opportunities do not meet their specific needs and skill sets but instead are designed for the L2 user of signed language. A goal of this study was to expand the limited research that currently exists in the field of interpreter education as it relates to L1 users of American Sign Language (ASL)—specifically, deaf-parented individuals. This study …

Assessing The Advantages Of Using Square Wave Signals For Particle Trapping In Carbon-Electrode Dielectrophoresis, Guillermo Contreras-Dávila, Jose I. Gomez-Quiñones, Victor H. Pérez-González, Rodrigo Martinez-Duarte May 2016

Assessing The Advantages Of Using Square Wave Signals For Particle Trapping In Carbon-Electrode Dielectrophoresis, Guillermo Contreras-Dávila, Jose I. Gomez-Quiñones, Victor H. Pérez-González, Rodrigo Martinez-Duarte

Publications

Here we present an improvement on the trapping efficiency of 3D carbon electrode Dielectrophoresis (carbonDEP) by using alternative signal geometries to the more traditional sine used to stimulate the electrodes. In particular, a square waveform is used. Theoretical analysis was based on the Root Mean Square (RMS) values and the Fourier Series Expansion of these signals. Computational modeling was performed to calculate the DEP force generated by the two signal waveforms and allowed for direct comparison. The trapping efficiency between square and sine signals was then determined experimentally. Given the same experiment characteristics, the use of square signals allows for …

Local Standards For Sample Size At Chi, Kelly Caine May 2016

Local Standards For Sample Size At Chi, Kelly Caine

Publications

We describe the primary ways researchers can determine the size of a sample of research participants, present the benefits and drawbacks of each of those methods, and focus on improving one method that could be useful to the CHI community: local standards. To determine local standards for sample size within the CHI community, we conducted an analysis of all manuscripts published at CHI2014. We find that sample size for manuscripts published at CHI ranges from 1 -- 916,000 and the most common sample size is 12. We also find that sample size differs based on factors such as study setting …

3d Carbon-Electrode Dielectrophoresis For Enrichment Of A Small Cell Population From A Large Sample Volume, Monsur Islam, Rucha Natu, Maria Fernanda Larraga-Martinez, Guillermo Contreras-Dávila, Rodrigo Martinez-Duarte

Publications

Isolation and enrichment of cells from a diluted sample is necessary for different clinical applications. Here we have demonstrated the use of 3D carbon electrode dielectrophoresis (DEP) to process a diluted yeast sample featuring concentration as low as 102 cells/ml. The yeast cells in the sample were first trapped on carbon electrodes by implementing positive DEP force and then released and concentrated in a small volume of clean buffer. The maximum limit of the cell trapping for our device was found to be around 4000 cells. Using 10 µl/min, an enrichment of 154.2 ± 23.7 folds was achieved, where sample …

Carbon Fibers Derived From Dry-Spinning Of Modified Lignin Precursors, Meng Zhang May 2016

Carbon Fibers Derived From Dry-Spinning Of Modified Lignin Precursors, Meng Zhang

All Dissertations

Cost and environmental concerns arise from the manufacture of carbon fibersusing petroleum-based precursors such as polyacrylonitrile (PAN). Toxic by-productssuch as hydrogen cyanide (HCN) are generated during stabilization and carbonization ofPAN-based carbon fibers. These concerns have promoted increasing interest in biomass-based carbon fibers. As the second most abundant biomass material on the earth, lignin isbeing investigated as a potential carbon fiber precursor. Therefore, this research wasfocused on converting lignin materials into carbon fibers with enhanced performanceproperties. Since the 1960s, various types of lignin have been investigated as carbon fiber precursors. Hardwood kraft lignin and organosolv lignin could be converted into carbon …

Microbiological And Quality Characteristics Of Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa) And Mung Bean (Vigna Radiata) Sprouts Grown Using Different Water Sources And Treated Post-Harvest, Kimberly A. Baker

All Dissertations

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that approximately 48 million people become sick from the consumption of food each year in the United States. Additionally, 46% of foodborne illnesses reported between 1998 and 2008 were contributed to the consumption of fresh produce. More specifically between 1996 and 2016, 41 foodborne illnesses have been reported from the consumption of sprouts. Sprouts are most often consumed raw, thus cooking is not used to prevent contamination from pathogens. The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act of 2011 has introduced new regulations for produce and sprout producers under produce safety standards. For …

Brownfield To Brightfield: Influences On Attitude, Brittni Leigh Olesen May 2016

Brownfield To Brightfield: Influences On Attitude, Brittni Leigh Olesen

All Theses

The purpose of this study is to analyze what factors influence a person’s attitude towards a brownfield site converted into a future solar energy farm through the RE-Power America’s Land Initiative to help increase the success of implementing solar energy farms in cities. Five different factors, including: spatial, public participation, local context, personal values, and socio-demographic factors are analyzed and tested using descriptive statistics and measures of association. Among other tests, measures of association were used to determine that egalitarian viewpoint, education and income had statistically significant relationships with acceptance towards the potential solar energy development. However, all of these …

The Sunglasses Of Ideology: Augmented Reality As Posthuman Cognitive Prosthesis, Jason Crider May 2016

The Sunglasses Of Ideology: Augmented Reality As Posthuman Cognitive Prosthesis, Jason Crider

All Theses

This project argues a methodological approach for examining augmented reality (AR) that blends new media studies with that of the digital humanities to develop a hybrid methodology that accounts for AR as a digital medium and, in turn, a critical framework for digital humanities (DH) cultural criticism. As Steven Jones argues in The Emergence of the Digital Humanities, the digital has always been physical, and the network has become "the water in which we swim" (20). Our networked tech has begun to reflect this by showing closer interaction between physical and digital artifacts, the most notable example being AR, where …

Rearing Black Soldier Fly To Supplement Natural Populations In Waste Composting Systems, Yushin Lin May 2016

Rearing Black Soldier Fly To Supplement Natural Populations In Waste Composting Systems, Yushin Lin

All Theses

The black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens L. (Stratiomyidae; Diptera), is a common and widespread non-pest fly and an essential decomposer of organic material. Because of its ability to decompose wastes and return nutrients to the environment, it is considered to be a beneficial insect for manure management in confined animal facilities. Larvae are an excellent source of protein and other nutrients and are used for fish and animal feed. The development of efficient rearing systems for black soldier fly is important in order to provide a source of larvae to initiate soldier fly-based waste-recycling systems and to augment populations in …

Characterization Of Smooth Muscle Cells And Urothelial Cells Differentiated From Human Adipose Derived Stem Cells For Seeding A Bladder Tissue Biomimetic Patch, Caitlyn Ambrose May 2016

Characterization Of Smooth Muscle Cells And Urothelial Cells Differentiated From Human Adipose Derived Stem Cells For Seeding A Bladder Tissue Biomimetic Patch, Caitlyn Ambrose

All Theses

Approximately 400 million people worldwide suffer from bladder disease, which can lead to the development of high pressure and low-compliance bladders. Current surgical solutions include replacing diseased bladder tissue with a segment of gastrointestinal (GI) tissue, referred to as a bladder augmentation. However, GI segments are known to cause a myriad of issues when implanted within the bladder, including urinary tract infection, metabolic abnormalities and abnormal drug kinetics. The objective of the present study is to investigate hADSCs as a cell source to seed a biomimetic bladder tissue patch for the purpose of bladder tissue remodeling and regeneration. hADSCs were …

Endothelialization And In Vitro Characterization Of A Small Diameter Tissue Engineered Vascular Graft For Patients With Diabetes, Eric Brandon Wright May 2016

Endothelialization And In Vitro Characterization Of A Small Diameter Tissue Engineered Vascular Graft For Patients With Diabetes, Eric Brandon Wright

All Theses

Prosthetic vascular grafting is largely successful in patients undergoing surgical intervention for vascular diseases in medium and large caliber arteries (inner diameter >6 mm). In small diameter arteries, however, prosthetic grafts are insufficiently non-thrombogenic, and autologous vein grafting and endovascular stenting are considered to be standard treatments. However, up to one third of patients lack proper donor vessels due to donor site morbidities or severe vascular disease, and stenting fails to provide long-term patency. Further, patients with diabetes have not only increased risk for the development of cardiovascular diseases, but also have poorer outcomes following intervention. To meet this need, …

Phosphorylation Of Eukaryotic Initiation Factor 2 Alpha Regulates Stress In The Human Protozoan Parasite Entamoeba Histolytica, Holland M. Hendrick May 2016

Phosphorylation Of Eukaryotic Initiation Factor 2 Alpha Regulates Stress In The Human Protozoan Parasite Entamoeba Histolytica, Holland M. Hendrick

All Theses

Entamoeba histolytica is a food- and water-borne intestinal parasite responsible for amoebic dysentery and amoebic liver abscess. The life cycle of E. histolytica alternates between the host-restricted trophozoite form and the highly infective latent cyst stage that is able to persist in the environment. Throughout its life cycle, which may include invasion of tissues in the human host, the parasite is subjected to a variety of stressful conditions. In other systems, stress can trigger the activation of kinases that phosphorylate a serine residue on eukaryotic translation initiation factor-2α (eIF2α). This modification inhibits the activity of eIF2 resulting in a general …
