A Policy Lens Of South Carolina Coastal Stormwater Management, Lori A. Dickes, Jeffrey Allen, Monika Jalowiecka, Katie Buckley Jan 2017

A Policy Lens Of South Carolina Coastal Stormwater Management, Lori A. Dickes, Jeffrey Allen, Monika Jalowiecka, Katie Buckley

Journal of South Carolina Water Resources

Similar to many environmental issues today, stormwater management lies within a network of regulatory and policy oversight. As South Carolina coastal communities continue to experience economic and population growth, understanding the broader policy context of stormwater pond management is important. This study was aimed at compiling the state-of-the-knowledge of stormwater pond management policy for the eight coastal counties of South Carolina. In order to enhance researchers and policymakers understanding of the stormwater policy and regulatory environment, this research utilizes a mixed methods approach. A mixed methods approach allows researchers to explore different components of a particular research question by deploying …

Analytical Content Vulnerability Assessment Methodology For Earthquake Catastrophe Models, Keivan Rokneddin, Amir Safiey, Mohammad Javanbarg, Vijay Manghnani, Weichiang Pang Jan 2017

Analytical Content Vulnerability Assessment Methodology For Earthquake Catastrophe Models, Keivan Rokneddin, Amir Safiey, Mohammad Javanbarg, Vijay Manghnani, Weichiang Pang

Publications

The scarcity of detailed claims data for building contents (Coverage C) from historical earthquake events poses a significant challenge for property insurance catastrophe models to reliably estimate the losses associated to building contents. To develop content vulnerability functions empirically, one would need to have access to data from a multitude of historical events; however, loss disaggregation by coverage is rarely reported even when claims data become available from recent significant events such as Maule (2010) and Tohoku (2011). While damage to the building structure (Coverage A) can be estimated analytically using simulation-based fragility functions to amend sparse historical observations, the …

Ironic Feminism: Rhetorical Critique In Satirical News, Kathy Elrick Dec 2016

Ironic Feminism: Rhetorical Critique In Satirical News, Kathy Elrick

All Dissertations

Ironic Feminism: Rhetorical Critique in Satirical News aims to offer another perspective and style toward feminist theories of public discourse through satire. This study develops a model of ironist feminism to approach limitations of hegemonic language for women and minorities in U.S. public discourse. The model is built upon irony as a mode of perspective, and as a function in language, to ferret out and address political norms in dominant language. In comedy and satire, irony subverts dominant language for a laugh; concepts of irony and its relation to comedy situate the study's focus on rhetorical contributions in joke telling. …

Big Data, Technical Communication, And The Smart City, Jordan Frith Dec 2016

Big Data, Technical Communication, And The Smart City, Jordan Frith

Publications

Big data is one of the most hyped buzzwords in both academia and industry. This article makes an early contribution to research on big data by situating data theoretically as a historical object and arguing that much of the discourse about the supposed transparency and objectivity of big data ignores the crucial roles of interpretation and communication. To set forth that analysis, this article engages with recent discussion of big data and “smart” cities to show the communicative practices operating behind the scenes of large data projects and relate those practices to the profession of technical communication.

This study used a form of qualitative research known as a case study. This particular study uses both intrinsic and instrumental case study designs (Denzin and Lincoln, 2006, Stake, 1995). The goal of the intrinsic component …

Social Entrepreneurialism As Economic Development Policy, Peter Staples Dec 2016

Social Entrepreneurialism As Economic Development Policy, Peter Staples

All Dissertations

The overall theme of this dissertation is social entrepreneurship and economic development policy. Empirical studies show strong evidence of the important role entrepreneurship plays in economic development. Recently, social entrepreneurship has emerged as a distinct field of scholarly study with the potential to increase economic development activities. It has the added benefits of increasing social and human capital and of reducing market failure and government failure by assisting underserved and marginalized populations in improving their standards of living. In spite of this potential, entrepreneurship in general has been neglected as part of a comprehensive economic development policy. Social entrepreneurship in …

Evaluating Indirect Calorimetry Methodology, Postural Energy Expenditure, And The Effects Of Diet And Exercise Recommendations, Collin Jeffrey Popp Dec 2016

Evaluating Indirect Calorimetry Methodology, Postural Energy Expenditure, And The Effects Of Diet And Exercise Recommendations, Collin Jeffrey Popp

All Dissertations

Scientific research provides the evidence necessary to build an effective framework for health recommendations. In a population of young, healthy adults the recommended duration of an indirect calorimetry measurement period when measuring resting energy expenditure was a minimum of 10 minutes, with the first 5-minutes being discarded. A steady state period was achieved during the second 5-minute segment of a 30-minute period. Furthermore, in a population of young women, short-term standing energy expenditure was statically greater than lying and sitting energy expenditure. However, recommendations to stand instead of sit may be negligible as the magnitude of the effect of short-term …
