Research in the field of mobile communication studies (MCS) has generally moved away from focusing on how mobile phones distract users from their physical environment to considering how the experience of space and place can be enhanced by locative smartphone applications. This article argues that trajectory may be complicated by the emergence of a new type of mobile technology: mobile virtual reality (MVR). While an increasing number of handsets are specifically developed with MVR in mind, there is little to no research that situates this phenomenon within the continuum of MCS. The intention of this paper is accordingly twofold. First, …

Mechanically Assisted Electrochemical Degradation Of Alumina-Tic Composites, Hetal Umesh Maharaja, Guigen Zhang
Publications
Alumina-TiC composite material is a tough ceramic composite with excellent hardness, wear resistance and oxidation resistance in dry and high-temperature conditions. In aqueous conditions, however, it is likely to be electrochemically active facilitating charge transfer processes due to the conductive nature of TiC. For application as an orthopedic biomaterial, it is crucial to assess the electrochemical behavior of this composite, especially under a combined mechanical and electrochemical environment. In this study, we examined the mechanically assisted electrochemical performance of alumina-TiC composite in an aqueous environment. The spontaneous electrochemical response to brushing abrasion was measured. Changes in the magnitude of electrochemical …
Feasibility Study Of Thermal Treatment For Mercury Removal From Soils, Thomas Edward Spain
Feasibility Study Of Thermal Treatment For Mercury Removal From Soils, Thomas Edward Spain
All Theses
Thermal remediation is an established method for the remediation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Thermal remediation for the remediation of elemental mercury was successfully applied by Kunkel et al., 2006 in the laboratory scale. Before the technology can be applied to the field scale, the thermal treatment for mercury needs to better understood using numerical simulation.
The Department of Energy’s TOUGH2/TMVOC Code was developed at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and was used to evaluate the potential effectiveness of thermal treatment to remediate elemental mercury. TMVOC is a three phase non-isothermal numerical simulator for water, gas, and VOCs in porous …
Modeling And Designing A Hydraulic Source Zone Isolation System, Yoel Gebrai
Modeling And Designing A Hydraulic Source Zone Isolation System, Yoel Gebrai
All Theses
Pump and Treat technology remains one of the most common approaches for groundwater remediation at contaminated sites. Despite its prevalence, the effectiveness of the Pump and Treat approach is limited by the chemical properties of the contaminant, heterogeneity, and cost (Mackay and Cherry, 1989; NRC, 1994). Pump and Treat systems are often in operation for long periods of time, at which point their environmental footprint, in addition to cost, needs to be considered. Greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation to power pumps and the disruption of ecosystems over time are undesirable environmental effects that can be a cause of concern …

Iron Hydroxide From Coal Mine Drainage To Remove And Reuse Phosphorus From Greenhouse And Plant Nursery Runoff, Megan Elizabeth Mary Delabarre Chase
All Theses
Irrigation runoff from agriculture and specialty crops production remains a source of excess phosphorus (P) loading into aquatic systems. Iron hydroxide from coal mine drainage (CMD) was investigated in this study as an adsorbent for low-cost P removal from greenhouse and plant nursery runoff. The overall objectives of this study were to quantify the P sorption capacity, desorbability of P, and plant availability of P adsorbed to Blue Valley iron hydroxide (BVIO), a granular adsorbent obtained from oxidation of CMD. Batch sorption experiments were conducted to measure the effect of mixing BVIO with silica sand (1:1; BVIO:Sand, by weight) on …

A Visual Data Analysis Of The Toxics Release Inventory, Theodore Charles Langlois
All Theses
The Environmental Protection Agency's Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) is a collection of data detailing the way hazardous chemicals are handled in industrial facilities. By requiring certain manufacturing facilities to report releases, the EPA offered the public unprecedented access to environmentally relevant data. Since its inception in 1986, the TRI has grown and changed both in chemicals and industries monitored. This thesis uses the data visualization platform Tableau, publicly available yearly TRI reports, and Life cycle impact assessment methodology to create a tool which 1) improves upon previous analyses of the TRI dataset, 2) offers an analysis based on previously underexplored …

Self-Assembling Peptide Hydrogel For Local Anticancer Prodrug Delivery In The Treatment Of Glioblastoma Multiforme, Arica Gregory
All Theses
Gliomas represent approximately 80% of all malignant brain tumors, and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) accounts for nearly half of all gliomas. GBM is the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor. Despite aggressive treatment including tumor resection followed by radiation and chemotherapy, the median survival rate for GBM averages between 12 and 15 months, with a 2-year survival rate less than 25%. Therefore, new therapeutic strategies are needed to improve the survival rate of those affected by GBM. Chemotherapy with the DNA alkylating agent, Temozolomide (TMZ), is commonly used as a first-line treatment for GBM. TMZ is an orally delivered drug …

Physiological And Environmental Impacts Of Nanomaterials-Biomolecular Coronae, Achyut J. Raghavendra
All Dissertations
Engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) exhibit unique electronic and optical properties, which are suitable for the broad spectrum of applications including biomedical, aerospace, textiles, agriculture. Such unique properties of ENMs also raise significant concerns over their adverse ecological and physiological effects. In the past two decades, ENMs were found to exhibit complex interactions in biological milieu. It is expected that physicochemical properties of ENMs and their surrounding environment influence their environmental and physiological fate and transport. Indeed, a comprehensive understanding of interactions at the nano-bio interface is critical to designing environmentally and physiologically benign ENMs pivotal to the future growth of nanomedicine …
Traversing The Digital Frontier: Culture's Impact On Faultline Emergence In Virtual Teams, William S. Kramer
Traversing The Digital Frontier: Culture's Impact On Faultline Emergence In Virtual Teams, William S. Kramer
All Dissertations
As organizations continue to spread across geographic boundaries, we must understand the complex interplay between an individual's cultural values and the effects of distribution. Despite the fact that almost half of all organizations utilize virtual tools to collaborate across nations, there is a dearth of research on this topic. Without considering cultural differences in this context, issues can emerge ranging from increased social loafing to decreased trust. In this study, I argue that the lack of social cues in virtual teams renders high-/low-context cultural differences imperative and that variations therein can cause the emergence of faultlines, thereby leading to negative …
Microworld Writing: Making Spaces For Collaboration, Construction, Creativity, And Community In The Composition Classroom, Daniel Frank
Microworld Writing: Making Spaces For Collaboration, Construction, Creativity, And Community In The Composition Classroom, Daniel Frank
All Dissertations
In order to create a 21st century pedagogy of learning experiences that inspire the engaged, constructive, dynamic, and empowering modes of work we see in online creative communities, we need to focus on the platforms, the environments, the microworlds that host, hold, and constitute the work. A good platform can build connections between users, allowing for the creation of a community, giving creative work an engaged and active audience. These platforms will work together to build networks of rhetorical/creative possibilities, wherein students can learn to cultivate their voices, skills, and knowledge bases as they engage across platforms and genres. I …
The Reconstruction Trope: Politics, Literature, And History In The South, 1890-1941, Travis Patterson
The Reconstruction Trope: Politics, Literature, And History In The South, 1890-1941, Travis Patterson
All Theses
This thesis examines how white southerners conceptualized Reconstruction from 1890 to 1941, with an emphasis on the era between the First and Second World Wars. By analyzing Reconstruction as it appears in political rhetoric, professional and amateur history, and southern literature, the thesis demonstrates how white southerners used the ‘tragic’ story of Reconstruction to respond to developments in their own time. Additionally, this thesis aims to illuminate the broader cultural struggle over Reconstruction between the First and Second World Wars. This thesis ultimately argues that the early revisionism in Reconstruction historiography was part of a broader reassessment of Reconstruction that …
Stretching Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells On Micropatterned Surfaces, Suzanne Nicole Bradley
Stretching Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells On Micropatterned Surfaces, Suzanne Nicole Bradley
All Theses
Vascular smooth muscle cells regulate blood flow by contracting and relaxing blood vessels. Vascular smooth muscle cells display one of two distinct phenotypes: contractile or synthetic. The contractile phenotype enables cells to contract, and the majority of cells in healthy blood vessels exhibit this phenotype. Transition to the synthetic phenotype is associated with abnormal mechanical forces and the development of vascular diseases, including hypertension and atherosclerosis. Cell-extracellular matrix interactions and mechanical stimulation are factors that affect phenotypic modulation. Micropatterning techniques create a microenvironment used to control cell morphology, adhesion, migration, proliferation, and differentiation. Vascular smooth muscle cells are circumferentially arranged …

The Influence Of In-Situ Activated Carbon On Biodegradation Of Chlorinated Solvents, Kameryn Mcgee
The Influence Of In-Situ Activated Carbon On Biodegradation Of Chlorinated Solvents, Kameryn Mcgee
All Theses
Chlorinated solvents have been a contaminant of interest in the remediation field for many years because they have been manufactured in large amounts and released into the environment due to improper storage and disposal. Since they are produced in such large quantities and there has been so many cases of uncontrolled releases, corrective actions are necessary and many remediation strategies have been explored. In-situ bioremediation of chlorinated solvents (TCE) is an intricate respiratory process which combines the addition of electron donors, chemical reactions, and the presence of microorganisms which directly access contaminants. Microbes metabolize the electron donor and utilize the …

Influence Of Methane Inhibitors And High Molecular Mass Electron Donors On Chlorinated Solvent Bioremediation, Morgan Ivey
Influence Of Methane Inhibitors And High Molecular Mass Electron Donors On Chlorinated Solvent Bioremediation, Morgan Ivey
All Theses
Chlorinated solvent bioremediation encompasses a number of combined microbial and chemical reactions that either oxidize or reduce the contaminant(s) of concern. In the case of trichloroethylene (TCE), many approaches rely on adding electron donors to stimulate chlororespiration, in which cells gain energy to grow by sequentially reducing TCE to ethene. In the recent years, the idea that chlorinated solvents could be reduced by inhibiting methane production to stimulate dechlorination has been put into practice by vendors. The theory is that if methane production is inhibited, electrons will be redirected to chlorinated solvent reduction for complete dechlorination. However, if methanogenesis is …
