Transcending The Essence Of Hair, Ashan Isaac Pridgon Dec 2018

Transcending The Essence Of Hair, Ashan Isaac Pridgon

All Theses

My work investigates the significant role and relationship that hair plays in African-American culture. Throughout history, African-Americans have used the styling of hair as a way of passing down tradition and expressing their individuality, cultural and political beliefs. Since the late 1970’s there has been a constant struggle for African-Americans to wear their hair naturally without backlash from society. In my work, I use culturally based objects such as hair combs, afro picks, head wraps and other accessories to symbolize black pride. I use this framework to generate abstracted ceramic vessels and sculptures. The content of my work becomes amplified …

Sanctuary: A Virtual-Reality, Immersive-Environment Mobile Application To Promote Mindfulness, Meditation, And Relaxation, Amanda Caroline Smoak Dec 2018

Sanctuary: A Virtual-Reality, Immersive-Environment Mobile Application To Promote Mindfulness, Meditation, And Relaxation, Amanda Caroline Smoak

All Theses

The World Health Organization calls stress the health epidemic of the twenty-first century [40]. Finding ways to manage stress – not just for our own health, but also for the health of our communities and children – is one of our most significant challenges for wellness. Virtual-reality (VR) therapy is the use of stimulated, interactive, and immersive environments as a tool for physical and psychological healthcare applications [31]. VR therapy and mindfulness practices have both been shown to alleviate stress and anxiety. The mobile application detailed here attempts to aid in stress reduction using virtual-reality therapy by immersing the user …

Knowledge Of Mental Health Disorders And Resources By Military Personnel, Savanna Taylor Dec 2018

Knowledge Of Mental Health Disorders And Resources By Military Personnel, Savanna Taylor

All Theses

With more soldiers returning home to the United States than any war era before, there is a need for research to understand military personnel’s mental health and how they use resources, like the Veteran’s Affairs and non-profit organizations. This study serves to further our understanding about service members’ knowledge on this subject. This study adds to the literature by conducting semi-structured interviews with 15 service members who had deployed on either United States military bases or ships, or peace-keeping missions, overseas after 9/11. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and thoroughly analyzed using a narrative approach. Five important themes emerged from …

Ruination, Caren L. Stansell

All Theses

My work is an investigation of illegal dumpsites located in the Blue Ridge area. This body of work serves as a timeline of the impact on the local landscape. Using photography, printmaking, and sculpture, I explore the environmental impact of the dumpsites, the accumulations of trash it creates, and the reclamation by nature. I seek to bring the global concern of trash into a local perspective.

Thermal Neutron Characterization And Dose Modeling Of A Plutonium-239/Beryllium Alpha-Neutron Source, Adam Hunter Willey Dec 2018

Thermal Neutron Characterization And Dose Modeling Of A Plutonium-239/Beryllium Alpha-Neutron Source, Adam Hunter Willey

All Theses

Determination of neutron dose can be challenging and requires knowledge of neutron energy and neutron flux. A plutonium-239/beryllium (239PuBe) alpha-neutron source was used to irradiate bacterial samples to create neutron dose response. The goal of this project was to characterize the thermal neutron flux of the 239PuBe alpha-neutron source and model the neutron dose using version MCNPX of the Monte-Carlo N-Particle transport codes. The 37 GBq 239PuBe alpha-neutron source was placed in a neutron “howitzer,” that is, a 2-ft diameter moderating barrel with four radial irradiation ports. Multi-foil activation was used at various distances to determine thermal neutron flux, which …

Yeats, Pound, And The Little Review, 1914-1918, Clare Hutton Nov 2018

Yeats, Pound, And The Little Review, 1914-1918, Clare Hutton

International Yeats Studies

Yeats made a small but interesting set of contributions to the avant-garde US periodical the Little Review, a journal for which Ezra Pound acted as ‘Foreign Editor’ and an important locus for modernist literature. My essay explores the range of Yeats’s contributions, and Pound’s rationale for being editorially involved. It examines editorial attitudes to the First World War, particularly in 1917, and the version of ‘In Memory of Robert Gregory’ which Yeats placed in the journal. By focusing on such specific moments and small textual details, the essay close reads what Sean Latham has described as “emergence,” “a particular …

Introduction: Yeats And Mass Communications, David Dwan, Emilie Morin Nov 2018

Introduction: Yeats And Mass Communications, David Dwan, Emilie Morin

International Yeats Studies

W. B. Yeats’s pursuit of an audience led him into the world of mass media—a landscape populated first by newspapers and later by radios, which he learned to navigate with shrewdness and skill. The purpose of this special issue is to examine Yeats’s various ventures in mass communication. Enlisting a broad range of critical approaches, contributors to this volume show how the demands of print journalism and radio broadcasting informed Yeats’s poetics, his thinking about the social vocation of art, and his ideas about how literature might be best received and structured. The essays also examine the reception and legacies …

Broadcasting The Rising: Yeats And Radio Commemoration, Emily C. Bloom Nov 2018

Broadcasting The Rising: Yeats And Radio Commemoration, Emily C. Bloom

International Yeats Studies

In a series of radio broadcasts from 1931 to 1937, Yeats presented several of his poems about the Easter Rising but, curiously, not his most famous Rising poem, “Easter, 1916.” The poems he chose, as well as those he omitted, reveal his understanding of radio’s commemorative properties. Radio’s ephemerality and its intimacy were especially well-suited for Yeats’s minor poems, which were better able to present shifting perspectives on the Rising from the vantage of the present moment, unlike “Easter, 1916,” which was quickly settling into the canonical version of the event. Through multiple broadcasts responding to historical developments, Yeats presented …

"Some Ovid Of The Films": W. B. Yeats, Mass Media, And The Future Of Poetry In The 1930s, Charles I. Armstrong Nov 2018

"Some Ovid Of The Films": W. B. Yeats, Mass Media, And The Future Of Poetry In The 1930s, Charles I. Armstrong

International Yeats Studies

This essay addresses Yeats’s negotiation of poetry’s relationship, during the 1930s, with the emerging mass culture. Rather than contextualizing Yeats’s view on the future with a traditional critical framework such as Romantic apocalyptical discourse, a closeness to Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and dystopian novels is explored. The main focus is on an unfinished draft for A Vision, “Michael Robartes Foretells,” and the way it envisages the changing situation for literature at the end of an epoch. Yeats’s use of classical parallels and linking of poetry and cinema are given special attention. His suggestion that the poetry of the …

Water-Soluble Cranberry Extract Inhibits Vibrio Cholerae Biofilm Formation Possibly Through Modulating The Second Messenger 3’, 5’ - Cyclic Diguanylate Level, Daniel B. Pederson, Yuqing Dong, Levi B. Blue, Sara V. Smith, Min Cao Nov 2018

Water-Soluble Cranberry Extract Inhibits Vibrio Cholerae Biofilm Formation Possibly Through Modulating The Second Messenger 3’, 5’ - Cyclic Diguanylate Level, Daniel B. Pederson, Yuqing Dong, Levi B. Blue, Sara V. Smith, Min Cao

Publications

Quorum sensing (QS) and nucleotide-based second messengers are vital signaling systems that regulate bacterial physiology in response to changing environments. Disrupting bacterial signal transduction is a promising direction to combat infectious diseases, and QS and the second messengers are undoubtedly potential targets. In Vibrio cholerae, both QS and the second messenger 3’, 5’—cyclic diguanylate (c-di-GMP) play a central role in controlling motility, motile-to-sessile life transition, and virulence. In this study, we found that water-soluble extract from the North American cranberry could significantly inhibit V. cholerae biofilm formation during the development/maturation stage by reducing the biofilm matrix production and …

Flags, Tags, And Custom Queues, Grendel Jamal Williams, Maggie Mason Smith, Erika Anderson

Presentations

Clemson Libraries have been using ILLiad for more than a decade. Upon recently hosting representatives from OCLC for eventual Tipasa migration, we learned that we currently use flags the way we will need to use tags in the future. As Tipasa will not offer an option for custom queues, which are a major part of our workflow, we will need to adapt tags for use in place of custom queues. This poster will outline our current plan for transforming our workflows after migration.

Glucose Signaling Is Important For Nutrient Adaptation During Differentiation Of Pleomorphic African Trypanosomes, Yijian Qiu, Jillian E. Milanes, Jessica A. Jones, Rooksana E. Noorai, Vijay Shankar, James C. Morris Oct 2018

Glucose Signaling Is Important For Nutrient Adaptation During Differentiation Of Pleomorphic African Trypanosomes, Yijian Qiu, Jillian E. Milanes, Jessica A. Jones, Rooksana E. Noorai, Vijay Shankar, James C. Morris

Publications

The African trypanosome has evolved mechanisms to adapt to changes in nutrient availability that occur during its life cycle. During transition from mammalian blood to insect vector gut, parasites experience a rapid reduction in environmental glucose. Here we describe how pleomorphic parasites respond to glucose depletion with a focus on parasite changes in energy metabolism and growth. Long slender bloodstream form parasites were rapidly killed as glucose concentrations fell, while short stumpy bloodstream form parasites persisted to differentiate into the insect-stage procyclic form parasite. The rate of differentiation was lower than that triggered by other cues but reached physiological rates …

Construction Disputes In The United States And The United Kingdom: A Comparison, Anusree Saseendran, Ben F. Bigelow, Zofia Rybkowski, Dawn Jourdan Sep 2018

Construction Disputes In The United States And The United Kingdom: A Comparison, Anusree Saseendran, Ben F. Bigelow, Zofia Rybkowski, Dawn Jourdan

The Professional Constructor

Construction disputes are on the rise globally. They adversely affect the progress and quality of a construction project by resulting in cost overruns and delays. They are also time-consuming and expensive to resolve. Hence it is valuable to identify the most disputed topics in construction in the US and compare them to those in a different country. This helps better understand disputes, and the influence that culture and the difference in the nature of construction in the regions may have on disputes. This study was an attempt to identify and compare the most disputed topics in construction in the United …

Bacteria And Competing Herbivores Weaken Top–Down And Bottom–Up Aphid Suppression, Carmen K. Blubaugh, Lynne Carpenter-Boggs, John P. Reganold, Robert N. Schaeffer, William E. Snyder Sep 2018

Bacteria And Competing Herbivores Weaken Top–Down And Bottom–Up Aphid Suppression, Carmen K. Blubaugh, Lynne Carpenter-Boggs, John P. Reganold, Robert N. Schaeffer, William E. Snyder

Publications

Herbivore suppression is mediated by both plant defenses and predators. In turn, plant defenses are impacted by soil fertility and interactions with soil bacteria. Measuring the relative importance of nutritional and microbial drivers of herbivore resistance has proven problematic, in part because it is difficult to manipulate soil-bacterial community composition. Here, we exploit variation in soil fertility and microbial biodiversity across 20 farms to untangle suppression of aphids (Brevicoryne brassicae) through bottom–up and top–down channels. We planted Brassica oleracea plants in soil from each farm, manipulated single and dual infestations of aphids alone or with caterpillars (Pieris …
