Using Online Videos To Improve Attitudes Toward Shared Automated Vehicles: Age And Video Type Differences, Kathryn Baringer, D. J. Souders, J. Lopez
Publications
Introducing shared automated vehicles (SAVs) should lead to several societal benefits, but both automated vehicles (AVs) and ridesharing must overcome barriers to acceptance. Previous research has investigated age differences in ridesharing usage and factors influencing acceptance of AVs. We investigate age differences in how two online introductory videos (educational or experiential) affect anticipated SAV acceptance. Participants in three different age groups were randomly assigned to watch 1.) an educational video about SAV technologies and potential benefits, 2.) an experiential video showing a SAV navigating traffic, 3.) both the experiential and educational videos, or 4.) a control video explaining how current …

Social Isolation And Sleep: Manifestation During Covid-19 Quarantines, June J. Pilcher, Logan L. Dorsey, Samantha M. Galloway, Dylan N. Erikson
Publications
Although researchers have investigated the impact of social isolation on well-being, the recent quarantines due to COVID-19 resulted in a social isolation environment that was unique to any examined in the past. Because sleep is one of the endogenous drives that impacts short and long-term health and well-being, it is important to consider how social isolation during the COVID-19 government-mandated quarantines affected sleep and sleep habits. A number of researchers have addressed this question during the last 2 years by examining several concepts related to possible changes in sleep during the quarantines. To best understand these recent results, the current …

Despite advancements in procedures and patient care, mortality rates for neonatal recipients of the Norwood procedure, a palliation for single ventricle congenital malformations, remain high due to the use of a fixed-diameter blood shunt. In this study, a new geometrically tunable blood shunt was investigated to address limitations of the current treatment paradigm (e.g., Modified Blalock-Taussig Shunt) by allowing for controlled modulation of blood flow through the shunt to accommodate physiological changes due to the patient’s growth. First, mathematical and computational cardiovascular models were established to investigate the hemodynamic requirements of growing neonatal patients with shunts and to inform design …

This body of work addresses humanity’s relationship with digital technology from a personal perspective. Through constructed photography and sculptural work, I point to the connections between humans, machines, and nature, emphasizing the blurred lines between each of these entities. By revealing overlaps and associations between them, I seek to reconcile digital connection and emotional connection. I believe reconciliation may come through the acknowledgment of digital technology’s influence, and the subversion of convenience for the sake of quality human connections.
The images within this series reside at the intersection of self-portraiture and documentary. A dialogue is formed between the subjects through …
Toxicity And Effects Of Tire Crumb Rubber In The Aquatic Environment, Stephanie Laplaca
Toxicity And Effects Of Tire Crumb Rubber In The Aquatic Environment, Stephanie Laplaca
All Dissertations
Plastic materials have provided innovative solutions to society’s evolving needs and challenges. Due to their durability and resistance to degradation, plastics remain in the environment for long periods of time and can therefore be transported to many environmental compartments such as water, sediment, and biota. Microplastics (MPs) have been defined as synthetic plastic particles that have at least one dimension less than 5 mm and are insoluble in water. Microrubber (MR), a recently acknowledged sub-group of MPs, has been documented in environmental samples more recently, frequently comprising a large portion of total MPs of various samples. In South Carolina specifically, …

Glycan Functionalization Of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (Ionps) As A Method Of Inactivating Antibiotic Resistant Neisseria Gonorrhoeae Via A Magnetically Mediated Energy Delivery (Magmed) System, Cedric Taylor
All Theses
With the increase of antibiotic resistant bacteria, current established therapeutic treatment methods are rapidly demonstrating decreasing efficacy. For this project, we are studying a novel alternate mechanism of treating antibiotic resistant bacteria by utilizing magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) coated with a heterobifunctional polyethylene glycol polymer (PEG) and functionalized with glycan structures that can interact with Neisseria gonorrhoeae FA1090. Interaction between the IONPs and bacteria is manipulated by an external alternating magnetic field (AMF) in a process known as magnetically mediated energy delivery (MagMED). Magnetic IONPs were synthesized and reacted with PEG (PEG-IONPs) and functionalized with glycans Gal(α1-3)Gal(β1-4)Glc(β1-1) (common name: …

Soil Moisture And Light Conditions Impact Digital And Visual Soil Color Assessments, Isabella Hill
All Theses
Determining soil color has traditionally been done visually, but inaccuracies with this method have been documented, including disagreement in evaluators, to differences in physical color books. Determining Munsell soil color in the field is also subject to environmental conditions, including soil water content (SWC) and light intensity. New digital spectral technology designed for determining soil color may offer accurate assessments regardless of human inaccuracies and environmental conditions. This research aimed to assess if visual observations differed from digital measurements of Munsell soil color as well as, the impacts of SWC and light on visual observations and digital measurements of soil …
Celebrating And Practicing Aspects From Eastern- And Western-Centric Animation Styles, Alissa Annette Standerwick
Celebrating And Practicing Aspects From Eastern- And Western-Centric Animation Styles, Alissa Annette Standerwick
All Theses
Animation styles in a modern world end up influencing the animation of other regions. This project, through animation, celebrates Eastern and Western differences in their animations. Rather than analyzing story differences, aspects of the habits formed by the region’s animators are analyzed and practiced. The formation of animation in respective cultures represents the local history of these regions. So to understand the aspects & technicalities of how animators animate per region, it is useful to understand how film, TV, & comic styles of an entire community impacted that area’s animation
In The Pines: Dung Beetle Community Composition In Longleaf Pine Habitat, Kelsea Lynn Young
In The Pines: Dung Beetle Community Composition In Longleaf Pine Habitat, Kelsea Lynn Young
All Theses
Dung beetle assemblages are recognized as ecological bioindicators, allowing us to monitor ecological impacts by observing community shifts. Acting as primary nutrient cyclers, they establish niche segregation by sometimes selecting dung based on species (e.g. coyote vs. deer) and by using dung in different ways (e.g. rollers vs. tunnelers). Longleaf pine savannahs are recognized as global hotspots for diversity. Species of dung beetles found within these ecosystems may differ substantially from those found in surrounding agricultural, residential or other forest land. Our objective was to investigate whether the exclusion of mammalian meso-predator exclusion impacts dung beetle abundance, species composition and …
Evaluating The Feasibility Of Measuring And Analyzing Strain Caused By Changes In Barometric Pressure In The Vadose Zone, Olivia Lynn Costantino
Evaluating The Feasibility Of Measuring And Analyzing Strain Caused By Changes In Barometric Pressure In The Vadose Zone, Olivia Lynn Costantino
All Theses
Changes in barometric pressure propagate into the subsurface where they can affect water level measurements in wells and cause vertical strain. Previous strain sensors were developed to measure vertical strain, but they were limited to measurements at a single depth, making it difficult to evaluate strains from a migrating pressure wave. Technology known as Coherence-length-gated Microwave Photonics Interferometry (CMPI) uses optical fiber sensors to measure strain at multiple locations. It has the potential to detect strain caused by variations in barometric pressure at multiple depths in the subsurface. The goal of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of using …
The Relationship Between Food Environments And Obesity Rates In The United States; Measured By The Modified Retail Food Environment Index, Mary Katherine Miller
The Relationship Between Food Environments And Obesity Rates In The United States; Measured By The Modified Retail Food Environment Index, Mary Katherine Miller
All Theses
The modified Retail Food Environment Index (mRFEI) is a measurement created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) designed to capture the number of healthy and less healthy food retailers in an area. Out of the total number of food retailers in that area considered either healthy or less healthy, the mRFEI represents the healthy percentage. The mRFEI index is commonly used to measure obesity amongst different levels of food access. Rather than simply relying on broad categorizations of food environments, using the raw index gives a more complete picture of the relationship between food availability and obesity. …
User Perceptions And Stereotypic Responses To Gender And Age Of Voice Assistants, Heather Watkins
User Perceptions And Stereotypic Responses To Gender And Age Of Voice Assistants, Heather Watkins
All Theses
Technologies such as voiced automation can aid older adults aging in place by assisting with basic home and health tasks in daily routines. However, currently available voice assistants have a common design - they are vastly represented as young and female. Prior work has shown that humans apply stereotypes to human-computer interactions similarly to human-human interactions. When these stereotypes are activated, users may lose trust or confidence in the device or stop using it all together. The purpose of this study was to investigate if users can detect age and gender cues of voiced automation and to understand the extent …
Effect Of Metal Ions On Stability Of Ascorbic Acid And Niacin Determined By Hplc, Jhongyan Huang
Effect Of Metal Ions On Stability Of Ascorbic Acid And Niacin Determined By Hplc, Jhongyan Huang

Water Recovery From Bioreactor Mixed Liquors Using Forward Osmosis With Polyelectrolyte Draw Solutions, Calen Raulerson
All Theses
The objective of this research was to test the feasibility of using forward osmosis (FO) with polyelectrolyte draw solutions to recover water from bioreactor mixed liquors. When combined with an Anaerobic Osmotic Membrane Bioreactor (AnOMBR), such a system could process fecal and food waste from astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and reclaim important nutrients and water. This project focused on measuring the obtainable water recovery rates from bioreactor effluent, and the identifying challenges associated with the operation.
AnOMBRs feature several advantages over aerobic bioreactors, and non-osmotic anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBR). Anaerobic bioreactors avoid the significant energy costs of …

How “Interested” Criticism Fueled The Formulation Of Nineteen Eighty-Four’S Cultural Afterlife, John Cameron Bosch
How “Interested” Criticism Fueled The Formulation Of Nineteen Eighty-Four’S Cultural Afterlife, John Cameron Bosch
All Theses
George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four carries a “cultural afterlife” as a result of “interested” criticism, which has a set political/practical barometer or motive. While everyone agrees that the novel presents a frightening dystopia, many also consider it a prophetic piece that illuminates the possible corruption of executive power of a nation thanks to this cultural afterlife; the modern and popular term “Orwellian” resulted from these sorts of analyses and have only escalated in the years since its inception. As a result, within the past decade, multiple scholars, analysts, and journalists have referenced Orwell’s novel as a factual representation of this executive …
Designing And Evaluating An Intervention To Target Functional Movement, Flexibility, And Strength In Paddle Whitewater Raft Guides, Leah Irwin
All Theses
According to the Outdoor Industry Association (2020), about 3.4 million people across the United States went whitewater-rafting in 2019. The majority of the research on whitewater rafting has focused on guest injuries, with less attention on the whitewater raft guides, who have an arduous job and are at risk for shoulder, back, and hip injuries. In addition to these injuries, rafting guides also experience bilateral imbalances from utilizing a dominant guiding side. One way to prevent these types of injuries and imbalances is to improve functional movement, strength, and range of motion (ROM). The goal of this study was to …
