Teaching Specifications Using An Interactive Reasoning Assistant, Dana Leonard May 2009

Teaching Specifications Using An Interactive Reasoning Assistant, Dana Leonard

All Theses

The importance of verifiably correct software has grown enormously in recent years as software has become integral to the design of critical systems, including airplanes, automobiles, and medical equipment. Hence, the importance of solid analytical reasoning skills to complement basic programming skills has also increased. If developers cannot reason about the software they design, they cannot ensure the correctness of the resulting systems. And if these systems fail, the economic and human costs can be substantial.
In addition to learning analytical reasoning principles as part of the standard Computer Science curriculum, students must be excited about learning these skills and …

The Design, Production And Analysis Of A Realistic Stereo Cg Short Film On A Six Month Budget., Celambarasan Ramasamy

All Theses

The production of stereoscopic CG films poses some interesting challenges, especially for student productions that work under the severe limitations of time and resources. This is mainly due to the non availability of off the shelf production tools catering to stereoscopic CG productions. This work presents the production process of one such student produced stereoscopic short film. The production process is described in detail starting from the initial conception of the narrative plot to the actual production of the film. Finally an experimental technique of using eye tracking as a tool for finding out the effectiveness of the various stereoscopic …

A Priori Analysis Of Subgrid Scalar Phenomena And Mass Diffusion Vectors In Turbulent Hydrogen-Oxygen Flames, Justin Foster May 2009

A Priori Analysis Of Subgrid Scalar Phenomena And Mass Diffusion Vectors In Turbulent Hydrogen-Oxygen Flames, Justin Foster

All Theses

Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of high pressure, turbulent H2/O2 non-premixed flames employing real gas effects, detailed chemistry, multicomponent, differential, and cross diffusion are conducted. The results of these simulations are analyzed to provide important subgrid information relevant to Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of turbulent combustion. Subgrid filtered scalar dissipation and scalar variances, species concentrations, reaction rates, and flame temperature are presented as a function of mixture fraction. The analysis also includes a detailed comparison of the actual filtered mass flux vectors with their corresponding forms evaluated with the filtered primitive variables. The results show a reasonable correlation …

Concept Analysis Of Risk Behavior In The Context Of Adolescent Development, Alice L. March Apr 2009

Concept Analysis Of Risk Behavior In The Context Of Adolescent Development, Alice L. March

Journal of Youth Development

The term risk behavior is a concept that has been used in the literature for many years, particularly as it relates to adolescent developmental issues and adolescent health behaviors. Currently the literature specific to the conceptual analysis of risk behavior is limited and relates in general to adults, rather than youths. The purpose of this investigation was to analyze not only the concept of risk behavior, but also its specific relationship to adolescents. Previous conceptual analyses have not considered how those concepts may be affected by the psychosocial development of adolescents. Therefore the specific aim of this analysis is to …

Modeling Hiv Drug Resistance, Mingfu Zhu Apr 2009

Modeling Hiv Drug Resistance, Mingfu Zhu

All Dissertations

Despite the development of antiviral drugs and the optimization of therapies, the emergence of drug resistance remains one of the most challenging issues for successful treatments of HIV-infected patients. The availability of massive HIV drug resistance data provides us not only exciting opportunities for HIV research, but also the curse of high dimensionality.
We provide several statistical learning methods in this thesis to analyze sequence data from different perspectives. We propose a hierarchical random graph approach to identify possible covariation among residue-specific mutations. Viral progression pathways were inferred using an EM-like algorithm in literature, and we present a normalization method …

We report on the detection by Swift of GRB 080913, and subsequent optical/near-infrared follow-up observations by GROND, which led to the discovery of its optical/NIR afterglow and the recognition of its high-z nature via the detection of a spectral break between the i and z bands. Spectroscopy obtained at the ESO-VLT revealed a continuum extending down to λ = 9400 Å, and zero flux for 7500 Å<λ< 9400 Å, which we interpret as the onset of a Gunn–Peterson trough at z = 6.695± 0.025 (95.5% confidence level), making GRB 080913 the highest-redshift gamma-ray burst (GRB) to date, and more distant than the highest-redshift QSO. We note that many redshift indicators that are based on promptly available burst or afterglow properties have failed for GRB 080913. We report on our follow-up campaign and compare the properties of GRB 080913 with bursts at lower redshift. In particular, since the afterglow of this burst is fainter than typical for GRBs, we show that 2 m class telescopes can identify most high-redshift GRBs.

Water Level Observations In Mangrove Swamps During Two Hurricanes In Florida, William Conner, Thomas W. Doyle, Terry J. Doyle, Christopher Swarzenski, Andrew S. From, Richard H. Day, Ken W. Krauss Mar 2009

Water Level Observations In Mangrove Swamps During Two Hurricanes In Florida, William Conner, Thomas W. Doyle, Terry J. Doyle, Christopher Swarzenski, Andrew S. From, Richard H. Day, Ken W. Krauss

Publications

Little is known about the effectiveness of mangroves in suppressing water level heights during landfall of tropical storms and hurricanes. Recent hurricane strikes along the Gulf Coast of the United States have impacted wetland integrity in some areas and hastened the need to understand how and to what degree coastal forested wetlands confer protection by reducing the height of peak water level. In recent years, U.S. Geological Survey Gulf Coast research projects in Florida have instrumented mangrove sites with continuous water level recorders. Our ad hoc network of water level recorders documented the rise, peak, and fall of water levels …

Modeling Effects Of Human Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms On Protein-Protein Interactions, Shaolei Teng, Thomas Madej, Anna Panchenko, Emil Alexov Mar 2009

Modeling Effects Of Human Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms On Protein-Protein Interactions, Shaolei Teng, Thomas Madej, Anna Panchenko, Emil Alexov

Publications

A large set of three-dimensional structures of 264 protein-protein complexes with known nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (nsSNPs) at the interface was built using homology-based methods. The nsSNPs were mapped on the proteins' structures and their effect on the binding energy was investigated with CHARMM force field and continuum electrostatic calculations. Two sets of nsSNPs were studied: disease annotated Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) and nonannotated (non-OMIM). It was demonstrated that OMIM nsSNPs tend to destabilize the electrostatic component of the binding energy, in contrast with the effect of non-OMIM nsSNPs. In addition, it was shown that the change of …

The first structures in the Universe formed at z > 7, at higher redshift than all currently known galaxies. Since GRBs are brighter than other cosmological sources at high redshift and exhibit simple power-law afterglow spectra that is ideal for absorption studies, they serve as powerful tools for studying the early universe. New facilities planned for the coming decade will be able to obtain a large sample of high-redshift GRBs. Such a sample would constrain the nature of the first stars, galaxies, and the reionization history of the Universe.

Ratiometric Single-Nanoparticle Oxygen Sensors For Biological Imaging, Changfeng Wu, Barbara Bull, Kenneth Christensen, Jason Mcneill

Publications

It makes sense: Conjugated polymer nanoparticles doped with a platinum porphyrin dye exhibit bright phosphorescence that is highly sensitive to the concentration of molecular oxygen. The small size, extraordinary brightness, excellent sensitivity, and ratiometric emission, together with the demonstration of single-particle sensing and cellular uptake, indicate the potential of the nanoparticle sensors for quantitative mapping of local molecular oxygen concentration.

HD 100453 has an IR spectral energy distribution (SED) which can be fit with a power law plus a blackbody. Previous analysis of the SED suggests that the system is a young Herbig Ae star with a gas-rich, flared disk. We reexamine the evolutionary state of the HD 100453 system by refining its age (based on a candidate low-mass companion) and by examining limits on the disk extent, mass accretion rate, and gas content of the disk environment. We confirm that HD 100453B is a common proper motion companion to HD 100453A, with a spectral type of M4.0V-M4.5V, and derive …

Publications

Nuclear physics offers us a powerful tool: using nuclear resonance absorption lines to infer the physical conditions in astrophysical settings which are otherwise diffcult to deduce. Present-day technology provides an increase in sensitivity over previous gamma-ray missions large enough to utilize this tool for the first time. The most exciting promise is to measure gamma-ray bursts from the first star(s) at redshifts 20–60, but also active galactic nuclei are promising targets.

Becoming Jane Jacobs First Draft 2009, Peter L. Laurence

Publications

Jane Jacobs (1916-2006), author of The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961), did not like the term “urban design” and did not describe herself as an architectural critic, but contributed significantly to the development of American architectural criticism and the new field of urban design. Although relatively little is known about Jacobs’ intellectual development, her influences, and her early writing career, before Death and Life was published, Jacobs was already among the most influential critics of urban renewal in the country. The book was a culmination of many years of studying and writing about the city; of working …

Cycle Equivalence Of Graph Dynamical Systems, Matthew Macauley, Henning S. Mortveit Jan 2009

Cycle Equivalence Of Graph Dynamical Systems, Matthew Macauley, Henning S. Mortveit

Publications

Graph dynamical systems (GDSs) generalize concepts such as cellular automata and Boolean networks and can describe a wide range of distributed, nonlinear phenomena. Two GDSs are cycle equivalent if their periodic orbits are isomorphic as directed graphs, which captures the notion of having comparable long-term dynamics. In this paper, we study cycle equivalence of GDSs in which the vertex functions are applied sequentially through an update sequence. The main result is a general characterization of cycle equivalence based on the underlying graph Y and the update sequences. We construct and analyse two graphs C(Y) and D( …

Quantifying The Effects Of Land Use Change On Stream Ecosystems For Use In Ecological Risk Assessment, Katherine Sciera Dec 2008

Quantifying The Effects Of Land Use Change On Stream Ecosystems For Use In Ecological Risk Assessment, Katherine Sciera

All Dissertations

Land disturbance often results in a cascade of physical and chemical stressors to aquatic ecosystems which can impact their biotic integrity. This study examined three developing watersheds near Greenville, SC to evaluate the quantitative relationships between the physical stressors associated with land use alterations and biotic integrity. More specifically, the objectives of this study were to 1) quantify the mechanisms of aquatic ecosystem degradation in streams impacted by watershed urbanization, 2) demonstrate the use of quantitative relationships among the physical, chemical, and biological stressors associated with land use change in an established ecological risk assessment framework, and 3) identify the …

Synthesis, Structure And Magnetic Properties Of Oxy-Anion Based Magnetic Solids Containing Transition Metal Oxide Nanostructures, Kulugammana Gedera Ranmohotti

All Dissertations

Inline with the focus of our research, my goal for this dissertation study is to further explore new classes of magnetic insulators exhibiting novel properties. The scope of this work is twofold: 1) the exploratory synthesis of polyanion-based mixed-framework compounds containing transition metal oxide magnetic nanostructures, and 2) the investigation of the structure/property correlation with respect to the spin couplings in confined lattices. These studies are of fundamental and technological importance regarding the long-term development of low-dimensional magnetic solids for device applications in especially information storage and quantum computing. Several interesting and significant transition metal based silicate, phosphate arsenate and …
