Key Variable Analysis And Identification Of Energy Consumption In An Automotive Manufacturing Plant, Lujia Feng, Laine Mears, Jörg Schulte
Key Variable Analysis And Identification Of Energy Consumption In An Automotive Manufacturing Plant, Lujia Feng, Laine Mears, Jörg Schulte
Publications
Energy consumption during the process of automotive vehicle production has seen increasing attention with a current world focus on sustainability. Energy analysis helps researchers better understand life cycle energy consumption of vehicles, and assists manufacturers to set effective energy conservation goals. Previous studies have been focusing on the machine-level energy modeling and analysis, but higher-level energy characteristics are less well understood. In particular, the investigation of influential variables on plant level energy consumption is believed to be essential, but previous studies have proved insufficient. This paper is intended to analyze and identify the key variables in plant level energy consumption …

A Revision Of Megalocraerus Lewis, 1902 (Coleoptera, Histeridae: Exosternini), Michael S. Caterino, Alexey K. Tishechkin
Publications
The formely monotypic Neotropical genus Megalocraerus Lewis is revised to include five species, known from southeastern Brazil to Costa Rica: M. rubricatus Lewis, M. mandibularis sp. n., M. chico sp. n., M. madrededios sp. n., and M. tiputini sp. n. We describe the species, map their distributions, and provide a key for their identification. Their subcylindrical body form and emarginate mesosternum have previously hindered placement to tribe, although their curent assignment to Exosternini now appears well supported by morphological evidence. Nothing is known of the natural history of the species.

A Multi-Objective, Hub-And-Spoke Model To Design And Manage Biofuel Supply Chains, Mohammad S. Roni, Sandra D. Eksioglu, Kara G. Cafferty, Jacob J. Jacobson
Publications
In this paper we propose a multi-objective, mixed integer linear programming model to design and manage the supply chain for biofuels. This model captures the trade-offs that exist between costs, environmental and social impacts of delivering biofuels. The in-bound supply chain for biofuel plants relies on a hub-and-spoke structure which optimizes transportation costs of biomass. The model proposed optimizes the CO2" style="position: relative;" tabindex="0" id="MathJax-Element-1-Frame">CO2 emissions due to transportation-related activities in the supply chain. The model also optimizes the social impact of biofuels. The social impacts are evaluated by the number of jobs created. The multi-objective optimization model is …
Optimization Models To Integrate Production And Transportation Planning For Biomass Co-Firing In Coal-Fired Power Plants, Sandra D. Eksioglu, Hadi Karimi, Burak Eksioglu
Optimization Models To Integrate Production And Transportation Planning For Biomass Co-Firing In Coal-Fired Power Plants, Sandra D. Eksioglu, Hadi Karimi, Burak Eksioglu
Publications
Co-firing biomass is a strategy that leads to reduced greenhouse gas emissions in coal-fired power plants. Incentives such as production tax credit (PTC) are designed to help power plants overcome the financial challenges faced during the implementation phase. Decision makers at power plants face two big challenges. The first challenge is identifying whether the benefits from incentives such as PTC can overcome the costs associated with co-firing. The second challenge is identifying the extent to which a plant should co-fire in order to maximize profits. We present a novel mathematical model that integrates production and transportation decisions at power plants. …
Extended Kalman Filter For Stochastic Tool Wear Assessment In Turning Of Inc718 Hard-To-Machine Alloy, Farbod Akhavan Niaki, Martin Michel, Laine Mears
Extended Kalman Filter For Stochastic Tool Wear Assessment In Turning Of Inc718 Hard-To-Machine Alloy, Farbod Akhavan Niaki, Martin Michel, Laine Mears
Publications
An Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is employed in this work for tracking tool flank wear area in wet-turning of Inconel 718 (INC718) Nickel-based alloy in variable feed condition. The tool wear area evolution is modeled with a 3rd order polynomial empirical function and an analytical solution for discrete state space system is derived. The state uncertainty was found to decrease up to 200-250μm of average flank wear length and then increase abruptly with an increase in tool wear. Therefore, the tool wear uncertainty was modeled with failure probability density, i.e. the bathtub function. While a constant uncertainty was considered for …
Energy Demand Forecasting In An Automotive Manufacturing Plant, Lujia Feng, Laine Mears, Joerg Schulte
Energy Demand Forecasting In An Automotive Manufacturing Plant, Lujia Feng, Laine Mears, Joerg Schulte
Publications
Energy analysis is an essential topic within a sustainable manufacturing strategy. To better understand the energy demand in a manufacturing plant, consideration of trends and patterns of energy consumption, and making predictions based on historical data is a promising approach. Time series analysis is a favorable method to be used; because of the rapid development in metering/sensor technology and computational systems, time series analysis can now be deployed on larger-scale systems. However, the application of time series models to manufacturing plant energy modeling is rare due to complexity. This paper augments traditional time series forecasting for manufacturing energy study, with …

Development Of A Miniaturized Ambient Glow Discharge Ionization Source And Its Application In Elemental And Molecular Analysis, Xinyan Zhang
Development Of A Miniaturized Ambient Glow Discharge Ionization Source And Its Application In Elemental And Molecular Analysis, Xinyan Zhang
All Dissertations
Since the liquid sampling-atmospheric pressure glow discharge (LS-APGD) was first developed as an excitation source for atomic emission spectroscopy, it has been improved upon and demonstrated as an ionization source for elemental mass spectrometry, molecular mass spectrometry, and ambient desorption mass spectrometry. Multiple functions coming from one package allowed the LS-APGD to hold a unique position among all atmospheric pressure glow discharges. It also has the capabilities to work with different sample forms including liquids, bulk solids, and solution residues. The high salt/matrix tolerance reduces sample prep work and thus provides convenience for its potential use as a field-Based ionization …
A Study On General Assembly Line Balancing Modeling Methods And Techniques, Bryan Pearce
A Study On General Assembly Line Balancing Modeling Methods And Techniques, Bryan Pearce
All Dissertations
The borders of the assembly line balancing problem, as classically drawn, are as clear as any other operations research topic in production planning, with well-defined sets of assumptions, parameters, and objective functions. In application, however, these borders are frequently transgressed. Many of these deviations are internal to the assembly line balancing problem itself, arising from any of a wide array of physical or technological features in modern assembly lines. Other issues are founded in the tight coupling of assembly line balancing with external production planning and management problems, as assembly lines are at the intersection of multiple related problems in …
Objective Bayesian Analysis On The Quantile Regression, Shiyi Tu
Objective Bayesian Analysis On The Quantile Regression, Shiyi Tu
All Dissertations
The dissertation consists of two distinct but related research projects. First of all, we study the Bayesian analysis on the two-piece location-scale models, which contain several well-known sub-distributions, such as the asymmetric Laplace distribution, the skewed normal distribution, and the skewed Student-t distribution. The use of two-piece location-scale models is an attractive method to model non-symmetric data. From a practical point of view, a prior with some objective information may be more reasonable due to the lack of prior information in many applied situations. It has been shown that several common used objective priors, such as the Jeffreys prior, result …
Tracking Anisotropic Optical Tracers To Study Biophysical Processes And Cytotoxicity, Khanh Van Nguyen
Tracking Anisotropic Optical Tracers To Study Biophysical Processes And Cytotoxicity, Khanh Van Nguyen
All Dissertations
We use anisotropic optical tracers (also called magnetically modulated optical nanoprobes – MagMOONs or MOONs for non-magnetic nanoprobes in this dissertation) to study biophysical processes such as enzyme-catalyzed cleavage through tissue, intracellular transport of these tracers and cytotoxicity based on this transport. The anisotropic optical properties cause these tracers to blink when rotating. This blinking is distinguishable from the background and can be tracked on a single-particle level in the absence of tissue, or for an ensemble average of tracers blinking through tissue. An alginate gel containing these tracers in the form of a thin film can be used as …

The lack of sufficient public charging stations for electric vehicles has long been recognized as a major hinder for massive adoption of electric vehicles (EV). This dissertation aims to develop a framework for designing charging station infrastructure networks that electric vehicle with limited travel range can be recharge en-route to complete trips to destinations and then would facilitate the adoption of electric vehicles. The rest part of this dissertation is concerned with modeling travel range of electric vehicle and users behavior of deviating from their most preferred routes when siting charging stations. The proposed multi-path refueling location model provides the …

All Dissertations
On October 4th 1957, the Soviet Union launched the world’s first man-made satellite, Sputnik 1, into an elliptical low Earth orbit. This surprise triggered an arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union, and science-oriented educational reform in the U.S. The Sputnik swung off of the U.S. in military, politics, policies, and education. The Sputnik woke Americans up from complacency came from technology, science, and educational superiority. Educational reform started with emphasizing science and defense education and it was expanded to educations at all level. Early reforms, National Science Foundation (NSF), National Defense Education Act (NDEA) of 1958, …
In Vitro Multi-Scale Patient-Specific Modeling Of Hemodynamics In Stage 1 Norwood Palliation For The Treatment Of Single Ventricle Heart Disease, Tianqi Hang
All Dissertations
Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a congenital heart defect in which the left ventricle is severely underdeveloped. The Norwood procedure is the first stage procedure to make an unrestrictive systemic blood flow and at the same time balance it with the pulmonary flow. This is done by constructing a neo-aorta using the pulmonary artery root and the autologous aorta, and then installing a shunt to the pulmonary artery. Variations of the Norwood surgery include the modified Blalock-Taussig (mBT) shunt, which diverts blood from the innominate artery to the pulmonary artery (PA), and the Right Ventricle Shunt (RVS), which diverts …
Bombardment Simulations And Intercalation Studies Of Carbon Materials, Charles Lowe
Bombardment Simulations And Intercalation Studies Of Carbon Materials, Charles Lowe
All Dissertations
Molecular bombardment experiments have led to the possibility of altering materials with properties not normally associated with those materials. Molecular bombardment leads to defect formation in the material, potentially creating a pore, depending on the material and bombarding molecule. Carbon allotropes, specifically graphite and graphene, make excellent candidates for molecular bombardment experimentation. Depending on the bombarding molecule and the kinetic energy associated with that molecule, the defects induced will be sufficient to create a pore in the graphene. The AIREBO potential is used to simulate a graphene bilayer being bombarded with a single Ar atom, or a fullerene molecule, to …

Bayesian Minimum Description Length Techniques For Multiple Changepoint Detection, Hewa Anuradha Priyadarshani
Bayesian Minimum Description Length Techniques For Multiple Changepoint Detection, Hewa Anuradha Priyadarshani
All Dissertations
This dissertation develops a minimum description length (MDL) multiple changepoint detection procedure that allows for prior distributions. MDL methods, which are penalized likelihood techniques with penalties based on data description-length information principles, have been successfully applied to many recent multiple changepoint problems. This work shows ow to modify the MDL penalty to account for various prior knowledge. Our motivation lies in climatology. Here, a metadata record, which is a file listing times when a recording station physically moved, instrumentation was changed, etc., sometimes exists. While metadata records are notoriously incomplete, they permit the construct a prior distribution that helps detect …
Downstream Bandwidth Management For Emerging Docsis-Based Networks, Gongbing Hong
Downstream Bandwidth Management For Emerging Docsis-Based Networks, Gongbing Hong
All Dissertations
In this dissertation, we consider the downstream bandwidth management in the context of emerging DOCSIS-based cable networks. The latest DOCSIS 3.1 standard for cable access networks represents a significant change to cable networks. For downstream, the current 6 MHz channel size is replaced by a much larger 192 MHz channel which potentially can provide data rates up to 10 Gbps. Further, the current standard requires equipment to support a relatively new form of active queue management (AQM) referred to as delay-based AQM. Given that more than 50 million households (and climbing) use cable for Internet access, a clear understanding of …

Characterizing The Effective Bandwidth Of Nonlinear Vibratory Energy Harvesters Possessing Multiple Stable Equilibria, Meghashyam Panyam Mohan Ram
All Dissertations
In the last few years, advances in micro-fabrication technologies have lead to the development of low-power electronic devices spanning critical fields related to sensing, data transmission, and medical implants. Unfortunately, effective utilization of these devices is currently hindered by their reliance on batteries. In many of these applications, batteries may not be a viable choice as they have a fixed storage capacity and need to be constantly replaced or recharged. In light of such challenges, several novel concepts for micro-power generation have been recently introduced to harness, otherwise, wasted ambient energy from the environment and maintain these low-power devices. Vibratory …

Although current research exists on school culture, there is a gap in the literature on specialized aspects of culture such as STEM Culture defined as the beliefs, values, practices, resources, and challenges in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) within a school. The objective of this study was to create a valid and reliable instrument, the STEM Culture Assessment Tool (STEM-CAT), that measures this cultural aspect based on a survey of stakeholder groups within the school community and use empirical data to support the use of this instrument to measure STEM Culture. Items were created and face validity was …
A Time-Efficient Strategy For Relay Selection And Link Scheduling In Wireless Communication Networks, Chenxi Qiu
A Time-Efficient Strategy For Relay Selection And Link Scheduling In Wireless Communication Networks, Chenxi Qiu
All Dissertations
Despite the unprecedented success and proliferation of wireless communication, sustainable reliability and stability among wireless users are still considered important issues in the underlying link protocols. Existing link-layer protocols, like ARQ [44] or HARQ [57,67] approaches are designed to achieve this goal by discarding a corrupted packet at the receiver and performing one or more retransmissions until the packet is successfully decoded or a maximum number of retransmission attempts is reached. These strategies suffer from degradation of throughput and overall system instability since packets need to be en/decode in every hop, leading to high burden for relay nodes especially when …
A Special Protection Scheme Utilizing Trajectory Sensitivity Analysis In Power Transmission, Dan Suriyamongkol
A Special Protection Scheme Utilizing Trajectory Sensitivity Analysis In Power Transmission, Dan Suriyamongkol
All Dissertations
In recent years, new measurement techniques have provided opportunities to improve the North American Power System observability, control and protection. This dissertation discusses the formulation and design of a special protection scheme based on a novel utilization of trajectory sensitivity techniques with inputs consisting of system state variables and parameters. Trajectory sensitivity analysis (TSA) has been used in previous publications as a method for power system security and stability assessment, and the mathematical formulation of TSA lends itself well to some of the time domain power system simulation techniques. Existing special protection schemes often have limited sets of goals and …
Towards A Greater Understanding Of Hydrothermally Grown Garnets And Sesquioxide Crystals For Laser Applications, Cheryl Moore
Towards A Greater Understanding Of Hydrothermally Grown Garnets And Sesquioxide Crystals For Laser Applications, Cheryl Moore
All Dissertations
ABSTRACT The hydrothermal method of crystal growth offers many benefits over traditional melt-based techniques such as lower temperature requirements relieving detrimental high temperature effects such as stress fracturing and a closed-environment, which limits impurities. The continued study of this type of growth including hydrothermal epitaxy is crucial in our world of constant miniaturization. Presented in this thesis is the hydrothermal growth of crystals of LuAG and Lu2O3 doped with a variety of dopants. Their room-temperature and cryogenic absorption spectra are also presented. Much like Nature uses heat, pressure, water and a nutrient-rich feedstock we have used this hydrothermal technique to …
Practical Robust Geotechnical Design- Methodology And Applications, Sara Khoshnevisan
Practical Robust Geotechnical Design- Methodology And Applications, Sara Khoshnevisan
All Dissertations
This dissertation advances the robust geotechnical design methodology by offering improvements, which makes it more efficient and practical for the design of geotechnical systems. Robust geotechnical design (RGD) methodology seeks an optimal design, which is insensitive to, or robust against, the variation in the uncertain input parameters (called “noise factorsâ€) by only adjusting the easy to control parameters (called “design parametersâ€). The main goal of robust design is to consider safety, cost and robustness simultaneously. Because the cost and the robustness are conflicting objectives, the multi-objective optimization that considers these two objectives while enforcing the safety constraint yields not a …
Iterative Design And Testing Of A Mobile Application To Support Food Consumption Monitoring And Decision Making, Melva James
Iterative Design And Testing Of A Mobile Application To Support Food Consumption Monitoring And Decision Making, Melva James
All Dissertations
Food overconsumption is a major contributor to weight gain leading to obesity. Constant exposure to larger amounts of food and beverage has caused many individuals to experience “portion distortion,†the perception that bigger portion sizes are appropriate for consumption at a single sitting. Independently and accurately changing this perception can be very difficult even if one has a desire to do so. In response to these observations, we developed and tested Picture-Perfect Portions, a mobile application designed to combat overconsumption, at the individual level, by leveraging the power of simple visualizations to help adults understand and adjust their food consumption …
Robust Model Development For Evaluation Of Existing Structures, Saurabh Prabhu
Robust Model Development For Evaluation Of Existing Structures, Saurabh Prabhu
All Dissertations
In the context of scientific computing, validation aims to determine the worthiness of a model in supporting critical decision making. This determination must occur given the imperfections in the mathematical representation resulting from the unavoidable idealizations of physics phenomena. Uncertainty in parameter values furthers the validation problems due to the inevitable lack of information about material properties, boundary conditions, loads, etc. which must be taken into account in making predictions about structural response. The determination of worthiness then becomes assessing whether an unavoidably imperfect mathematical model, subjected to poorly known input parameters, can predict sufficiently well in its intended purpose. …

Chalcogenide glasses (ChGs) are well-known for their attractive optical properties, such as high refractive index and transparency in across infrared wavelengths. ChGs also possess the ability to compositionally tune properties such as the refractive index, the thermo-optic coefficient, and other non-optical properties. Chalcogenide glasses with compositionally tailored physical and optical properties will provide optical designers with new materials necessary to create novel infrared imaging systems requiring new or expanded functionality. This dissertation has evaluated the relationship between glass composition, the resulting atomic structure, and resulting optical and thermo-optical properties, with specific focus on the infrared refractive index and the thermo-optic …
