Seen And Heard: Learning From Young People's Experiences Sharing Power In Faith Communities, Jenna Sethi, Rachel Chamberlain, Clare Eisenberg, Eugene Roehlkepartain

Journal of Youth Development

Faith communities have been shown to provide a sense of belonging and community while also providing a rich environment for youth to engage and grow as leaders. Yet, few current studies have explored faith communities as spaces for sharing power and sustained youth leadership development. Using a thematic analysis approach, this qualitative study of 222 participants across Jewish, Muslim, and Christian faith communities aimed to explore the role of developmental relationships in young people's lives and their faith and spiritual development. Through the analyses, multiple and varied examples of sharing power emerged, leading us to investigate more fully the roles …

Agency And Empowerment For Adolescent Girls: An Intentional Approach To Policy And Programming, Prerna Banati, Lauren Rumble, Nicola Jones, Sarah Hendriks

Journal of Youth Development

As national governments roll out COVID response plans, an opportunity arises to re-cast adolescent girls’ programs to centrally anchor them on girls’ voices, leadership, ambitions, and assets in development policies and programs. Drawing together the evidence on what we know works for adolescent girls, as well as the growing literature on positive strengths-based programming which are gradually and increasingly being applied, this commentary calls for a girl-intentional approach to policy and programming. A girl-intentional approach is described through 3 case studies, which illustrate the additionality of new or improved adolescent knowledge, skills, and competencies; improved opportunities for adolescent engagement, voice, …

Management And Governance Accountability To Children: Participation And Representation In Organisational Decision Making, Claire O’Kane, Annabel Trapp, Paul Stephenson, Julia Smith-Brake Oct 2021

Management And Governance Accountability To Children: Participation And Representation In Organisational Decision Making, Claire O’Kane, Annabel Trapp, Paul Stephenson, Julia Smith-Brake

Journal of Youth Development

Children’s participation and accountability to children are increasingly common aspirations of child-focused organisations; development agencies and research institutions frequently use young people’s advisory councils as one path to participation. A key challenge is to not only find meaningful ways to institutionalise children’s views as part of organisational decision making, but also to identify and address barriers to participation. This article presents the findings of a commissioned landscape assessment to identify good practices and lessons learned from child-focused agencies, in order to inform the operationalisation of children’s requests on programme improvements and accountability to children. The study was exploratory and qualitative. …

Leveling Up: Connected Mentor Learning In A Digital Media Production After-School Space, Nathan Phillips, Virginia Killian Lund Oct 2021

Leveling Up: Connected Mentor Learning In A Digital Media Production After-School Space, Nathan Phillips, Virginia Killian Lund

Journal of Youth Development

This article introduces mirrored practice of leveling up as a model for educator learning grounded in connected learning and the connected mentor framework. Our purpose is to introduce this model and share examples of how it can be enacted. We argue that the model is a rich and successful way for youth development professionals to expand their capacities as educators and to support expansive possibilities for young people’s learning. The model supports all educators’ learning and growth, but it is particularly applicable to mentors working in interest-driven, informal learning environments like makerspaces and YOUmedia learning labs. The model is drawn …

Overexpression Of Non-Photochemical Quenching (Npq) Related Genes Alters Plant Development And Enhances Plant Osmotic Stress Resistance In Creeping Bentgrass, Zihe Zhu Aug 2021

Overexpression Of Non-Photochemical Quenching (Npq) Related Genes Alters Plant Development And Enhances Plant Osmotic Stress Resistance In Creeping Bentgrass, Zihe Zhu

All Theses

Photosynthesis, an important pathway for plants to accumulate organic matters, is critical for plant productivity. This process transforms the carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates and releases oxygen. However, when the light intensity is too high, more reactive oxygen species (ROS) is generated in the photochemical reaction center, leading to the photodamage of plants. Plants have evolved different photoprotection mechanisms, such as Non-photochemical Quenching (NPQ), to prevent this damage at the expense of photosynthetic rate. NPQ converts excess light energy into heat energy and dissipates it, avoiding damage to plants under excessive light. Overexpression of photoprotection proteins violaxanthin de-epoxidase (VDE), …

Evaluation Of Plant Hormones On Herbicide Safety In Sweetpotato (Ipomoea Batatas L.), Giovanni Caputo Aug 2021

Evaluation Of Plant Hormones On Herbicide Safety In Sweetpotato (Ipomoea Batatas L.), Giovanni Caputo

All Theses

Sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas L. (Lam)] growers need new technologies to manage weeds as current strategies rely on combinations of pre-emergent (PRE) or cultivation, which do not provide season long weed control. A label expansion of postemergence (POST) herbicides would be extremely beneficial to farmers and could improve weed management in sweetpotato.

Three studies were conducted at the Clemson University Coastal Research and Education Center from January 2019 to November 2020 to investigate the ability of plant hormones and ascorbic acid (AsA) to improve sweetpotato tolerance to applications of POST herbicides. An in vitro study tested bentazon injury on three …

Comparing Cyberincivility And Cyberbullying In The Workplace: Measurement, Outcomes, And The Power Imbalance, Annie Wilson Aug 2021

Comparing Cyberincivility And Cyberbullying In The Workplace: Measurement, Outcomes, And The Power Imbalance, Annie Wilson

All Dissertations

In recent years, the ever-expanding role of technology in the workplace has led to increased incidents of cyberincivility and cyberbullying in this setting. These constructs are related to cyberbullying among youth but have important distinctions as the settings, behaviors, and outcomes can differ. As the body of literature on cyberbullying and cyberincivility in the workplace grows, it is difficult to assess the validity of results as there are various measures used to quantify these constructs, and there is some disagreement in the literature on the definitions and distinction between the two. It is impossible to assess the prevalence, behaviors, and …

A Survey Of Language Shaming Experiences In Interpreter Education, Dawn M. Wessling, Suzanne Ehrlich Aug 2021

A Survey Of Language Shaming Experiences In Interpreter Education, Dawn M. Wessling, Suzanne Ehrlich

International Journal of Interpreter Education

Problems of practice (Henriksen & Richardson, 2017) are the impetus for change across many disciplines and result in a myriad of solutions toward best practices. Teaching American Sign Language/English interpreting is no different than other genres in higher education in seeking continuous improvement. Signed language interpreters in teaming situations may engage in self- and peer critique in the process of creating an interpretation (Russell, 2011). As a result, interpreters are cognizant of corrections they may receive from their peers, whether new to the field or long-term practitioners. The action of being monitored by peers and the related behavior are not …

Risk Management In Translation: How Much Does It Really Explain?, Daniel Gile Aug 2021

Risk Management In Translation: How Much Does It Really Explain?, Daniel Gile

International Journal of Interpreter Education

While risk has always been part of translation, it was taken up as a distinct topic recently, with some confusion as to what the term actually covers and some problematic claims about its central role as a determinant of translation behavior and the links between risk and translation effort. It is argued that risk is more often a constraint than a driver of decisions, that the correlation between the magnitude of risk-associated loss and the number of problem-solving efforts can be weak, and that achievement-oriented decision making explains translatorial behavior better than risk management and is more compatible with professional …

Operational And Environmental Impacts Of Whole Tree Harvesting In The Southern United States, Manisha Parajuli Aug 2021

Operational And Environmental Impacts Of Whole Tree Harvesting In The Southern United States, Manisha Parajuli

All Theses

There has been a gradual development and adaptation of mechanized harvesting equipment in the last hundred years. There is also a gradual change in the silvicultural and forest management practices. Thinning and restoration cuts are being implemented to manage overstocked and unmanaged pine forests by using mechanized harvesting equipment. However, a challenge that occurs with the first thinning and restoration cuts is the utilization of the small-diameter trees and logging residues. Landowners, foresters, and loggers are thus interested in finding the most profitable option to utilize those logging residues produced during such harvesting operations. Another challenge that occurs with the …

Raising Awareness Of Endangered Species Through The Use Of Digitally Created Characters, Justin Weeks Aug 2021

Raising Awareness Of Endangered Species Through The Use Of Digitally Created Characters, Justin Weeks

All Theses

Animated films have no shortage of memorable characters. They are the subjects of the film and are designed intentionally to be appealing. They are also what sell merchandise, as evidenced by high-end collectibles created and sold by toy companies such as McFarlane and Sideshow. [58] [85] Put simply, audiences love the characters in animated films. That same appeal can be used strategically to aid endangered species. [49] Persons that have a positive attitude towards a particular animal are more likely to want to protect it by assisting in its conservation. [57] This protective instinct can be especially strong in the …

The Second-Person Narrative Mode Used As A Proposed Engagement Form In Virtual Reality Storytelling, Rodney Florencio Da Costa Aug 2021

The Second-Person Narrative Mode Used As A Proposed Engagement Form In Virtual Reality Storytelling, Rodney Florencio Da Costa

All Theses

Methods of storytelling in cinema, theater, and literature have well-established conventions that have been built throughout narrative history and the development of these more traditional formats. In virtual reality, though, many of the techniques that have formed part of this cinematic language or visual narrative are not easily applied. In general, when the virtual reality narrative term is used, it is associated with filmed or rendered 360º videos that use head-mounted displays for presentation and most often uses first and third-person narratives, which may compromise a director's intent for story flow.

This thesis aims to put a new light on …

The Bachelor As A Platform For Format Subversion: Authorial Intent And Audience Reaction, Michael A. Vaughan Aug 2021

The Bachelor As A Platform For Format Subversion: Authorial Intent And Audience Reaction, Michael A. Vaughan

All Theses

It is quite clear while watching any iteration of The Bachelor franchise that there is a formulaic design that each season follows with the rare delineation here and there, and much of this can be attributed to the show’s intended audience demographic that it is trying to reach. The audience for The Bachelor is relatively stagnant, as there is little change amongst the show’s viewership and, until recently, very little change on the side of the show’s producers to alter the audience that it brings in. Because the primary demographic that The Bachelor reaches consists of mainly women, a number …

This multiple case study explored how adolescents and their teachers in a virtual education environment navigated the process of teachers’ digital writing feedback and its accompanying power dynamics. The study addressed a need in literacy research to understand how digital writing feedback functions in virtual schools due to concerns related to lower standardized test scores in reading among virtual schools (Fitzpatrick et al., 2020) and large increases in virtual school enrollment in recent years (Center for Research on Education Outcomes, 2015). This move toward virtual learning was accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic (Farrow et al., 2020). The study’s theoretical framework …

Step By Step: A Survey Of The Hierarchy Found In Charleston Staircases With An Emphasis On Secondary Stairs, Leah Dawn Applewhite Aug 2021

Step By Step: A Survey Of The Hierarchy Found In Charleston Staircases With An Emphasis On Secondary Stairs, Leah Dawn Applewhite

All Theses

A secondary staircase is a stair built for the use of domestic workers to reach both utilitarian and non-utilitarian spaces of a structure. These service stairs may be found not only in the United States, but in many areas of the world. These staircases are also examples of dual circulation, meaning there are multiple ways to travel through the same space. The presence of these staircases is a sign of extreme wealth, as people who found the need for a secondary stair were wealthy enough to afford servants, or in the case of the American south prior to the Civil …

Perceptions Of Multilingual Employees In The Workplace, Sydney Marie Milian Aug 2021

Perceptions Of Multilingual Employees In The Workplace, Sydney Marie Milian

All Theses

As the workplace becomes further diversified, it is important to understand how foreign language skills are treated in relation to other skills and the factors that influence this such as how the language was learned. Although there are efforts to further understand the experiences of multilingual and multicultural employees, much of the existing work is designed to examine the experiences of these employees but not the perceptions of others around them related to their job-relevant skill sets. This study sample was comprised of 474 participants from US Amazon’s Mechanical Turk workers, aged 22–74. Independent variables of level of organizational citizenship …
