Nonparametric Analysis In Educational Test Development - A Mokken Scale Approach To Evaluating Efl Vocabulary Proficiency, Ali Jahanaray, Akram Faravani
Nonparametric Analysis In Educational Test Development - A Mokken Scale Approach To Evaluating Efl Vocabulary Proficiency, Ali Jahanaray, Akram Faravani
Publications
Mokken Scale Analysis (MSA) can offer a more flexible approach to common Item Response Theories (IRT) as a non-parametric method for evaluating educational tests with ordinal data. This study applied MSA on a Vocabulary Levels Test (VLT) originally developed with IRT methods among 234 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students to test the assumptions of MSA, including unidimensionality, monotonicity, local independence, and invariant item ordering (IIO) with mokken package in R. MSA assumptions successfully met with the VLT validated with validating the VLT being a unidimensional test with Automated Item Selection Procedures (AISP) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) methods utilized. …
"Things Can Get Unsavory": Professional Interactions, Social Capital, Organizational Identification Among University Resident Assistants, Michael L. Tidwell
"Things Can Get Unsavory": Professional Interactions, Social Capital, Organizational Identification Among University Resident Assistants, Michael L. Tidwell
All Theses
University resident assistants (RAs) have become a central component of modern higher education and community-oriented residential student experiences. RAs are increasingly responsible for not only community development and engagement of residential students, but also administrative and disciplinarian responsibilities (Boone et al., 2016; Conn, 2020). As a result, RAs face increased feelings of burnout (DuBose, 2020; Stoner, 2017), which research connects to higher turnover intentions and lower job satisfaction (Stoner, 2016, 2017). While most literature on RAs focuses on identification with various social groups (e.g., race, gender, sexuality), organizational identification (OI) – a deep-rooted sense of connection with an organization’s goals …
Perspectives On The Application Of Pharmacogenomics In Patient Care, Erika Meaddough
Perspectives On The Application Of Pharmacogenomics In Patient Care, Erika Meaddough
All Dissertations
Pharmacogenomics, the study of the genetic contribution to inter-individual differences in drug response, has great potential for realizing the goals of precision medicine: the right drug, for the right patient, at the right time. However, application in the clinical setting, through the use of pharmacogenetic testing, still has not gained widespread acceptance. This work describes multiple aspects of pharmacogenomics, which drive current research in this field.
Chapter I is an introduction to pharmacogenomics. Regulatory agencies and professional organizations across the globe provide information about gene-drug interactions that could lead to adverse drug reactions, and/or therapeutic failure. Risks for poor health …
Water Scarcity: Impact On Water Rights, Institutions, And An Irrigated Agriculture, Nataly Medina
Water Scarcity: Impact On Water Rights, Institutions, And An Irrigated Agriculture, Nataly Medina
All Theses
This thesis combines two papers to provide a better understanding of the effects and management of water scarcity during periods of water shortage. The first manuscript discusses the evolution of water rights across the southeastern United States in response to increasing demands and droughts, while the second manuscript studies the effects of water scarcity on agriculture production in the western US.
The southeastern United States has historically benefited from abundant water supplies, allowing them to apply the riparian doctrine with little regulation. However, in the past few decades, the region has undergone major shifts in water policy. In the first …
Bringing Vanished Landscapes To The Surface: A Multi-Tool Approach To Unearthing Charleston's Walled City, Alexis Allen
Bringing Vanished Landscapes To The Surface: A Multi-Tool Approach To Unearthing Charleston's Walled City, Alexis Allen
All Theses
The early 18th century historic fortification system that surrounded the urban town of Charleston has been a focus of excavations and historical research within the past two decades. However, while the outline of early Charleston’s walled city is hypothesized through the analysis of historic maps and plats, very few fortification locations have been visually confirmed. In order to determine their accuracy, this thesis georeferenced eleven historic maps and four plats to the modern landscape. As a result, possible locations of Charleston’s walled city were predicted. These were surveyed as test sites and remote sensing methods were employed that helped …
Quantitative Techniques For Classifying Mouldings: An Exploration Of Logistic Regression Within Architectural Investigations, Chase Pilcher
Quantitative Techniques For Classifying Mouldings: An Exploration Of Logistic Regression Within Architectural Investigations, Chase Pilcher
All Theses
Since the passing of the National Historic Preservation Act in 1966, the realm of architectural history has evolved, becoming more interdisciplinary. There was a shift in focus from looking at architecture from a fine art point of view to looking at it through a social lens. The new social perspective approach focused not only on the buildings but also on the people that inhabited or constructed the space. Approaching architectural investigations in this manner has allowed for a deeper understanding of the influences that shaped the built environment. Advancements in technology have also aided in furthering our overall comprehension of …
Healthcare Built Environment And The Covid-19 Pandemic, A Mixed-Method Study, Mohammad Saleh Nikooopayan Tak
Healthcare Built Environment And The Covid-19 Pandemic, A Mixed-Method Study, Mohammad Saleh Nikooopayan Tak
All Theses
The outbreak of COVID-19 presented an unparalleled risk to public health, leading to urgent scientific efforts in understanding transmission mechanisms and mitigating risks, especially in healthcare settings. This mixed-methods study examines knowledge advancement regarding indoor air quality in healthcare facilities during the pandemic. A systematic literature review of 163 post-COVID studies identifies key research thrusts and 31 recommendations related to building ventilation, air filtration, surface disinfection, and monitoring. Comparison with over 200 pre-pandemic publications reveals both reliance on established infection control principles and unique contributions, such as detecting viral RNA in air and surface samples indicating potential airborne and fomite …
Intent Versus Reality: Examining Implementation Of The Advisory Period At The Middle School Level, Jordan A. Hudson
Intent Versus Reality: Examining Implementation Of The Advisory Period At The Middle School Level, Jordan A. Hudson
All Dissertations
The advisory period is a key component of a successful middle level experience for young adolescents. Advisory is designed to be a time when students build relationships with peers as well as one trusted adult, referred to as an advocate. During the advisory period, the academic and social-emotional needs of students are addressed. In order to address the vast and varying needs of a young adolescent, school leaders provide direction for specific structures to be put in place; however, there is a lack of teacher buy-in and student engagement.
This study utilized improvement science through the implementation of one Plan, …
Women Building After The Charleston Fire Of 1838 Using “An Act For Rebuilding The City Of Charleston” Loans, Joyce Pope
Women Building After The Charleston Fire Of 1838 Using “An Act For Rebuilding The City Of Charleston” Loans, Joyce Pope
All Theses
The subject of this thesis is women commissioning buildings using loans they obtained as part of An Act for Rebuilding the City of Charleston. The Act, which passed after the fire of 1838, made $2 million dollars in loans available to all Charlestonians to rebuild the city after the fire wiped out hundreds of buildings on the peninsula. As a result of the way the act was structured, at least ten women, including a formerly enslaved woman, received loans and built houses and commercial buildings using those funds. This thesis examines whether the loan program opened the door for women …

Chapter I provides an overview of remote education and a brief history of genetics. While the COVID-19 pandemic prompted a turn to emergency online education, exposure to this form of delivery has led to increased intentional online education.
Chapter II focuses on computer and technology use in healthcare by nursing students. This study investigated nursing students’ perspectives using a modified version of the Pretest for Attitudes Toward Computers in Healthcare (PATCH) assessment scale to explore students’ ideas about computers and technology in healthcare delivery. According to the PATCH scale, the …
Expanding Tolerances For Wobble: Pushing Through Tensions To Provide Critical Literacy Pedagogy, Daniel Stockwell
Expanding Tolerances For Wobble: Pushing Through Tensions To Provide Critical Literacy Pedagogy, Daniel Stockwell
All Dissertations
Secondary English language arts (ELA) teachers are in unique positions to support their students in critical literacy practices so youth can use reading and writing to advocate for social change and use what they learn in class to make the world more equitable (Morrell, 2005; 2008). This is possible if secondary ELA teachers embrace the full liberatory potential of their subject and if they intentionally enact critical literacy pedagogy (Morrell, 2008; 2017). Unfortunately, current sociopolitical discourse surrounding teaching, particularly surrounding what texts are deemed appropriate to be included in schools (see Limbong, 2022; Stout, 2022), and the outcry against the …

Addressing The Elephant In The Room: An Exploratory Multiple Case Study Of Principals’ Perceptions Of Opportunity Gaps, Their Leadership Practices And Access To Advanced Placement Courses For Marginalized Students, Parker Morse Andreoli
All Dissertations
Since the implementation of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, achievement gaps have guided education reform work. The focus on these gaps in student outcomes has been standardized and has lacked consideration of the inputs that create the academic achievement disparities between demographic groups of students. These gaps are often tied to the segregation of learning opportunities, both across and within schools, and perpetuate racist and classist stereotypes of students. A critical need to shift attention from gaps in achievement to a more appropriate measure, opportunity gaps between racially minoritized students and their White peers, is needed. In this …

Bridging The Gap Between High-Stakes Testing And 21st Century Skills, Patricia Gosnell
All Dissertations
The purpose of this research study is to determine how successful teachers allocate class time between the need for students to meet high-stakes testing and creating a constructivist learning environment that prepares students for real-world careers. In this study, I used an explanatory sequential mixed method design to explore how much class time teachers of English Language Arts (ELA) and math allow for constructivist activities and direct instruction. The findings showed that teachers of gifted and talented (GT) and advanced classes who use 70% or more of their class time for constructivist learning still successfully have 60% or more of …
Variability In Anesthesia And Its Implications For Improving Patient Safety, Joshua Michael Biro
Variability In Anesthesia And Its Implications For Improving Patient Safety, Joshua Michael Biro
All Dissertations
Improving patient safety in anesthesia has proven to be an arduous and challenging task. Despite the many strategies and interventions to improve patient safety that have been employed, patient harm in anesthesia remains a problem. The struggle to reduce patient harm in anesthesia is both attributable to and representative of the complexity of the anesthesia system. In navigating this complex system, anesthesia providers have different approaches to how they accomplish their work, which results in variability in anesthesia practice. This variability provides an immense challenge to designing and implementing efforts to improve patient safety, as rigid interventions are often met …
The Effect Of Game Experience On Students’ Creative Performance In Video Game Environments, Shuyu Huang
The Effect Of Game Experience On Students’ Creative Performance In Video Game Environments, Shuyu Huang
All Dissertations
There is a lack of creativity fostering models in the field of game-based learning. So, the current study aims to develop and test a creativity fostering model with game experience and mediating factors. A one-week creative support game intervention was conducted with eighty-eight sixth-grade students. Findings from the path analysis demonstrated that participants' game experience (perceived challenge and perceived autonomy) indirectly impacted in-game creative performance through mediating factors (creative efficacy and engagement). The current study revealed that games with challenge and autonomy design could benefit students’ in-game creative performance through creative efficacy and engagement.
