Social Determinants Of Health Approach To Facilitate Fulfillment Of The U.S. Latinx Children’S Right To Personal Security: The Strong Communities Initiative As A Case Study, Arelis Moore De Peralta
Publications
Environmental injustice, structural racism, and their effects on poverty affect disproportionately communities of color in the United States (U.S.); contributing to health inequities, including child maltreatment and neglect. Cultural diversity and pluralism makes necessary the study of families’ cultural and socioeconomic values to characterize the socio-ecological contexts and social determinants of health (SDOH) to which children from underrepresented communities are exposed to in the U.S. This descriptive paper presents a SDOH approach, by building on the existing literature, to identify socioeconomic, cultural, and contextual conditions that influence Latinx children’s fulfillment of their right to personal security. Using the Strong Communities …
Do Urban Open Spaces Provide Refugia For Frogs In Urban Environments?, David Hutto, Kyle Barnett
Do Urban Open Spaces Provide Refugia For Frogs In Urban Environments?, David Hutto, Kyle Barnett
Open Access Publishing Fund
Urbanization is among the largest threats to wildlife populations through factors such as fragmentation, isolation, and habitat destruction. Urban open spaces, such as parks and golf courses, have the potentiel to provide wildlife with suitable habitat within an urbanized matrix. These refugia may be particularly important for amphibians, which represent one of the most endangered and least vagile vertebrate grouper on earth. During the spring and summer of 2018, we conducted surveys to determine the presence of anurans at 51 wetland sites within the Piedmont ecoregion of South Carolina. Nearly one-third of these wetlands were located within urban open spaces, …

What Scientists Do: Engaging In Science Practices Through A Wonderframed Nature Study, Steph N. Dean, Andrew Gilbert
Publications
Despite recent reforms concerning how students engage in science, there have been significant challenges for educators seeking to consistently implement science practices within the classroom. This study considered science practices within a wonder-framed nature study as one possible way for educators to support students as they take on the role of scientists. We interviewed twenty students in Grades 3 through 5 who had participated in wonder journaling sessions outdoors that led to an investigative project and presentation. The evidence suggests that students strongly engaged in investigative science practices, and that they also experienced opportunities for sensemaking and critiquing practices. Through …

It is fair to say that religion, and in particular the ways in which some Christian and Islamic thinkers have again begun to encroach on the domain of science (e.g., global warming, the teaching of evolution), has caused a great deal of consternation within the scientific and philosophical communities. An understandable reaction to these developments is to reject out of hand even the slightest taint of religion in these fields—a position that has now attained the status of orthodoxy, at least in the western world. This is curious on its face, given the fact that religion has clearly provided a …
Coordination And Privacy Preservation In Multi-Agent Systems, Huan Gao
Coordination And Privacy Preservation In Multi-Agent Systems, Huan Gao
All Dissertations
This dissertation considers two key problems in multi-agent systems: coordination (including both synchronization and desynchronization) and privacy preservation.
For coordination in multi-agent systems, we focus on synchronization/desynchronization of distributed pulse-coupled oscillator (PCO) networks and their applications in collective motion coordination. Pulse-coupled oscillators were originally proposed to model synchronization in biological systems such as flashing fireflies and firing neurons. In recent years, with proven scalability, simplicity, accuracy, and robustness, the PCO based synchronization strategy has become a powerful clock synchronization primitive for wireless sensor networks. Driven by these increased applications in biological networks and wireless sensor networks, synchronization of pulse-coupled oscillators …

Use Of A Signing Bioscience Dictionary In Increasing Student Interpreters’ American Sign Language Life Science Vocabulary, Judy Vesel, Diane Clark, Tara Robillard
Use Of A Signing Bioscience Dictionary In Increasing Student Interpreters’ American Sign Language Life Science Vocabulary, Judy Vesel, Diane Clark, Tara Robillard
International Journal of Interpreter Education
Interpreters who are skilled in academic ASL content, such as the vocabulary needed to interpret postsecondary science courses, are rare. This is not surprising, because interpreting training programs focus on developing the skills to fluently interpret from sign to voice as well as voice to sign, not on the specialized vocabulary for more specialized content. This study examined the impact of training interpreting students on the use of a Signing Bioscience Dictionary (SBD). Research involved incorporating terms found in undergraduate biology courses into the SBD, conducting an evaluation, and soliciting recommendations for improvement of the SBD. Key findings showed that …

This thesis explores the early conceptual designs for Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina. Examining architect Richard Morris Hunt’s surviving floorplans, elevation drawings, and a handful of other renderings, this thesis chronicles the evolution of Biltmore House on the drafting tables of the Hunt office from a luxurious but typical colonial revival mansion into the largest house ever constructed in the United States. Additionally, the thesis explores the European precedents that inspired the design of Biltmore House by comparing its details with those of buildings frequently referenced as having inspired its design in several secondary sources. The result is a …
The Effect Of In-Situ Activated Carbon On Biodegradation Of Tce, Sreedhar Harigovind
The Effect Of In-Situ Activated Carbon On Biodegradation Of Tce, Sreedhar Harigovind
All Theses
Contaminants pose a serious concern due to their relative ease of transport through groundwater, where they can accumulate and become a plume (i.e. dissolved contaminants that move with groundwater flow). Chlorinated solvents are contaminants of concern due to their potential for causing cancer, organ disease, and other ailments. Due to improper storage and disposal, these solvents find themselves in groundwater reserves, and thus warrant the need for finding treatment options to remove them from the water. In-situ biodegradation of TCE is a respiratory process consisting of electron donors, acceptors, and microorganisms that are either native or introduced into the system. …

Development Of Extracellular Vesicle Isolation And Model Systems Toward Early Ovarian Cancer Diagnostics, Tyler Slonecki
Development Of Extracellular Vesicle Isolation And Model Systems Toward Early Ovarian Cancer Diagnostics, Tyler Slonecki
All Dissertations
Ovarian cancer (OC) is characterized by late stage discovery and low survivability. However, when diagnosed early (Stages I or II) the 5-year survival rate is 92% up from 29%.5 The extreme dichotomy in survivability is what makes OC a prime candidate for early diagnosis techniques. Exosomes, a subtype of extracellular vesicles, may bridge the gap between early and late diagnosis, but are lacking consistent isolation and detection technologies. Here poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) capillary channeled polymer (C-CP) fibers employing an HIC protocol are investigated as a novel exosome isolation method and a quick, inexpensive, and easy-to-use platform for OC diagnosis. The …
The Frequency-Amplitude Response Of A Class Of Nonholonomic Systems, Colin Rodwell
The Frequency-Amplitude Response Of A Class Of Nonholonomic Systems, Colin Rodwell
All Theses
Nonholonomic systems have been investigated as models for locomotion due to the similarity between nonholonomic constraints and the no-slip condition of wheels or the Kutta condition of swimmers' tails. The focus of most past research has been on kinematic nonholonomic systems. However, an increasing body of research points to benefits that dynamic components of these systems, such as underactuated degrees of freedom, can provide.
This work investigates the effect of adding stiff degrees of freedom to the Chaplygin sleigh, a classical nonholonomic system that has been used in the past as a swimming model. Observed resonance behavior is shown to …
Assessing Climactic Effects On Yellow Perch (Perca Flavescens) Reproduction And Growth, John Cannaday
Assessing Climactic Effects On Yellow Perch (Perca Flavescens) Reproduction And Growth, John Cannaday
All Theses
Climate change is altering thermal regimes in aquatic systems worldwide, often impacting species on the southern edges of their ranges in the northern hemisphere. Yellow Perch, Perca flavescens, a cool water species, have a patchy distribution at the southern edge of their range in North American, occurring primarily in systems that provide coolwater refugia during summer months (e.g., tailwaters below hypolimnetic release dams). However, minimum winter temperatures are much warmer in these systems than in northern locations. In northern populations, egg quality is linked to overwinter thermal conditions, with long, cold winters resulting in higher quality eggs compared to …
Nonlinear Modeling And Control Of Driving Interfaces And Continuum Robots For System Performance Gains, Chengshi Wang
Nonlinear Modeling And Control Of Driving Interfaces And Continuum Robots For System Performance Gains, Chengshi Wang
All Dissertations
With the rise of (semi)autonomous vehicles and continuum robotics technology and applications, there has been an increasing interest in controller and haptic interface designs. The presence of nonlinearities in the vehicle dynamics is the main challenge in the selection of control algorithms for real-time regulation and tracking of (semi)autonomous vehicles. Moreover, control of continuum structures with infinite dimensions proves to be difficult due to their complex dynamics plus the soft and flexible nature of the manipulator body. The trajectory tracking and control of automobile and robotic systems requires control algorithms that can effectively deal with the nonlinearities of the system …
Encystation And Glycogen Metabolism In Entamoeba Histolytica, Jordan Lynne Wesel
Encystation And Glycogen Metabolism In Entamoeba Histolytica, Jordan Lynne Wesel
All Dissertations
Entamoeba histolytica is a parasitic protozoan that causes amebic dysentery, which affects approximately 90 million people annually, killing between 50-100,000. E. histolytica is transmitted via the oral-fecal route, through ingestion of contaminated food and water. The infectious form of the disease is the quiescent cyst, which after ingestion, undergoes excystation in the small intestine to the proliferative trophozoite. The trophozoite is the disease-causing form of the parasite, which colonizes the large intestine. Some trophozoites encyst in the large intestine and are passed out of the host, propagating the infectious cycle.
Despite the global burden of this disease, study of the …

With the dramatic increase in vehicle technology, the availability of a wide range of powertrain options, and the development of advanced driver assistant systems (ADAS), instrument cluster interfaces have become more complex, increasing the demand on drivers. Understanding the needs and preferences of a diverse group of drivers is essential for the development of digital instrument cluster interfaces that improve driver’s understanding of critical information about the vehicle. This research was divided in three studies. Study …
Genetic And Mirna Transcriptomic Analysis Of Autoregulation Of Nodulation Signaling In Medicago Truncatula, Diptee Chauligain
Genetic And Mirna Transcriptomic Analysis Of Autoregulation Of Nodulation Signaling In Medicago Truncatula, Diptee Chauligain
All Dissertations
Legumes can source nitrogen from the air through biological nitrogen fixation inside root nodules formed in a symbiosis with rhizobia. A complex root-to-shoot-to-root signaling pathway called Autoregulation of Nodulation (AON) controls the number of nodules formed depending on the plant’s nitrogen requirements. In Medicago truncatula, the MtSUNN receptor complex in the shoot binds to the root-generated AON signals, peptides called MtCLEs, resulting in downregulation of miR2111 expression in the shoot, with the effect of decreased transport of miR2111 to the roots. Decreased miR2111 levels in the roots then cause an increase in transcript levels of the miR2111 targets MtTML1 …
High Sulfur-Content Materials From Free Fatty Acids, Ashlyn Dennis Smith
High Sulfur-Content Materials From Free Fatty Acids, Ashlyn Dennis Smith
All Dissertations
The consumption of traditional plastics continues to climb to meet increasing consumer needs, despite growing awareness that these petrochemical-derived materials are detrimental to the environment. Sustainability scientists are faced with the task of trying to replace some of these materials with sustainably sourced compounds, leading the industry away from fossil fuel-derived monomers. Fatty acid derivatives have proven to be versatile sources for monomers. As constituents of several high-volume and low value waste streams and, given their origins in plant and animal sources, fatty acid derivatives are an ideal starting material. The presence of alcohol, carboxylic acid and olefin functional groups …
Validation Of Physically Heat-Treated Process For Poultry Litter And Analysis Of Microbial Community Of Animal Waste-Based Soil Amendments Using Sequencing Approach, Hongye Wang
All Dissertations
Biological soil amendments of animal origin (BSAAO), such as animal waste or animal waste-based composts, commonly used as organic fertilizer, may contain human pathogens such as Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. To reduce harmful microorganisms, animal waste can be treated by composting or other validated scientific methods. But insufficient treatment may introduce pathogens into agricultural fields. As a nutrient-rich fertilizer, poultry litter may also contain human pathogens with Salmonella spp. as a primary focus. Physical heat treatments can kill Salmonella in poultry litter with or without the composting process, but validation studies or guidelines are still needed for the litter processing …
