The Control Strategies Of Brominated Organic Disinfection By-Products: Adsorption With Pre-Chlorination And Photodegradation, Cagri Utku Erdem
The Control Strategies Of Brominated Organic Disinfection By-Products: Adsorption With Pre-Chlorination And Photodegradation, Cagri Utku Erdem
All Dissertations
Increasing water pollution, scarcity, and seasonal events force water treatment plants to improve existing treatment techniques and/or implement new methods to enhance drinking water treatment and comply with disinfection by-product (DBP) regulations. A limited number of studies examine the pre-chlorination prior to activated carbon (AC) adsorption for the removal of DBP precursors, and there are no comprehensive and representative treatment conditions in current literature. Although many studies investigated photodegradation of individual DBPs by low pressure ultraviolet (UV254) light, there is still lack of information and limited understanding of photodegradation of total organic halogens and practical implications of UV …
Evaluation Of The Effect Of Benzalkonium Chloride On Nitrification For Application In Rendering Wastewater, Mrinal Rama Thulasiram
Evaluation Of The Effect Of Benzalkonium Chloride On Nitrification For Application In Rendering Wastewater, Mrinal Rama Thulasiram
All Theses
Rendering plant wastewater is generally characterized by high ammonia concentration owing to the usage of Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QACs) as disinfectants in the plant. The high ammonia concentration needs to be treated and converted into harmless nitrate before being discharged into water bodies. Nitrification is a standard process carried out to facilitate ammonia removal, but the high QAC concentrations in these wastewaters are known to inhibit the nitrification process. The two-staged nitrification process is carried out by ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB), collectively called nitrifiers. The most commonly found AOB and NOB in wastewater systems are …
Prediction Of Pathogenic Mutations In Spermine/Spermidine Synthases, Shannon Bonomi
Prediction Of Pathogenic Mutations In Spermine/Spermidine Synthases, Shannon Bonomi
All Theses
As genetic technology and information become continuously more sophisticated and applied to the prevention and treatment of diseases, the need to understand the effects of genetic variants becomes an important task with regards to assessing disease risk. In the specific case of intellectual disabilities, prenatal screenings is an important diagnostic tool that prepares families and health professionals for the arrival of a child who may need immediate, specialized care. Cell Free DNA screenings are routine for determining sex and provide the opportunity to discover genetic anomalies. However, this has little value unless mutations can be recognized as pathogenic and are …
"Custome Is An Idiot": How Genre Bending Opens New Meanings For Hæc Vir, Or The Womanish Man, Stephen Montgomery-Anderson
"Custome Is An Idiot": How Genre Bending Opens New Meanings For Hæc Vir, Or The Womanish Man, Stephen Montgomery-Anderson
All Theses
Hæc Vir, or the Womanish Man is often conceived of as a satirical pamphlet. Moreover, scholars such as Linda Woodbridge and Simone Chess read the pamphlet as ultimately and explicitly arguing for a normative rendering of gender. Such readings, while acknowledging the rhetorical power and feminist nature of the crossdressed female character Hic Mulier’s arguments, invariably discount them in favor of a supposed return to normalcy. I instead suggest that Hic Mulier’s arguments be read as genuine and potentially altering. I further argue that we should read Hæc Vir as a closet drama. Bending the genre of the …
Perception And Play: Consumer Perceptions Of Craft Breweries And The Impacts Of Tourism Expenditures On Economic Health, Anne Wade
All Theses
This thesis evaluates two different strategies local leaders use to support and grow their economies. The first evaluates how residents from across the American South view and understand their experience of local craft breweries. The second evaluates the effects of direct tourism spending and direct tourism tax receipts on important measures of resident well-being in the twenty-three county Western North Carolina region. The first chapter in this thesis evaluates the overall consumer perception of the growing craft brewing industry within the states of Kentucky, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, and Louisiana and what factors affect this perception. It uses …
A Contribution To The Statistical Analysis Of Climate-Wildfire Interaction In Northern California, Adam Diaz
A Contribution To The Statistical Analysis Of Climate-Wildfire Interaction In Northern California, Adam Diaz
All Theses
Wildfires are extreme weather events that exist at the interface of atmospheric, ecological, and human processes. Ongoing anthropogenic climate change is expected to impact the distribution, frequency, and behavior of wildfires on a grand scale, however the exact nature of this change remains shrouded in a great deal of uncertainty. This study takes a statistical approach to the question over the fire-prone Northern California region of the western United states. Climate model projections are analyzed to investigate changes in a major driver of fire weather in the region. The relationship between wildfire severity and climate factors is then explored separately, …
Fathom In Color: Expansion Of Reproduceable Color In Interference Pattern-Based Printed Motion And Depth Effects, Dovie Jeffcoat
Fathom In Color: Expansion Of Reproduceable Color In Interference Pattern-Based Printed Motion And Depth Effects, Dovie Jeffcoat
All Theses
Value-added printed embellishments are increasingly sought after as brands compete for consumer attention. Fathom Optics’ method for printing motion and depth effects provides a cost-efficient, reduced waste embellishment option. One of Fathom’s current limitations is producing effects with vibrant color. The current standard practice for producing color Fathom Effects tends to darken and desaturate the final embellishment’s color. This study endeavors to determine how an ink color's components (hue, value and chroma) may determine a Fathom Effect’s contrast or intensity. To achieve this, fifteen color inks were selected to flexographically print the effect patterns. Samples were taken from each color …
Effect Of Refrigerated Storage On Meat Quality, Jillian Reid Richardson
Effect Of Refrigerated Storage On Meat Quality, Jillian Reid Richardson
All Theses
Maintaining meat quality during cold temperature storage is an important goal for increasing consumer satisfaction and reducing food waste. Following a literature review on the importance of cold meat storage, a study was conducted as a part of Electrolux refrigerator research and development. Chicken breast and beef sirloin filets were stored at -2°C, -5°C, and -18°C and monitored for quality changes over a 7-day period. Temperature fluctuations and relative humidity data were monitored automatically by sensors. Meat quality was evaluated by measuring water activity, moisture content, pH, colorimetry, sensory, and drip loss. Microbial plate counts were used to monitor the …
Physical And Microbiological Characteristics Of Pickled Eggs From Japanese Quail (Coturnix Coturnix Japonica) Of The Pharaoh Variety, Adair Hoover
All Theses
The quality and microbiological characteristics of quail eggs were evaluated after eggs were pickled in different vinegar brine solutions. Pickling food in vinegar is one of the oldest preservation methods; however, little research has been conducted on pickled quail eggs. Commercial quail eggs obtained from a local producer were boiled, peeled, and placed into various pickling solutions and held for 24 or 48 hours at room temperature. After the holding period, eggs were removed from the solutions, weighed, and tested for pH, water activity, texture, and color. A second experiment was conducted to determine the effects of various pickling solutions …
Macrophage Rac2 Promotes Suppression Of Germination During Aspergillus Fumigatus Infection, Chris D. Tanner
Macrophage Rac2 Promotes Suppression Of Germination During Aspergillus Fumigatus Infection, Chris D. Tanner
All Theses
Aspergillus fumigatus is a fungus found ubiquitously in the environment including in the air we breathe. Though not a threat to most people, immunodeficient or immunosuppressed individuals are at risk for developing severe infection, including the life-threatening condition of invasive aspergillosis. The hematopoietic cell specific GTPase protein Rac2 is associated with major roles in innate immune defense. Currently Rac2 has been demonstrated to be crucial for survival against a variety of infections. Here, we use a rac2 null mutant zebrafish line and morpholino approaches to elucidate roles of Rac2 in mounting the macrophage host defense response against A. fumigatus infection. …
The Screen And Development: Creative Writing And Liminality In Children’S Literature, Rebecca E. Glenn
The Screen And Development: Creative Writing And Liminality In Children’S Literature, Rebecca E. Glenn
All Theses
This creative thesis strives to research and implement the overlap of liminality found within Children’s Literature, especially those works that exist through the screen. The critical component of this thesis explores the ways in which childhood development and maturity, a theme commonly found within Children’s Literature, embodies its own “right of passage” associated with the liminal. The journey of the Children’s Literature protagonist is often wrought with this movement from familiar boundaries to a sense of new development. The critical analysis emphasizes the methods Children’s Literature genre uses emotion, familial connections, symbology, space, and even elements of the monstrous to …
Soft Web-Based Continuum Robot Grippers, Anthony Carambia
Soft Web-Based Continuum Robot Grippers, Anthony Carambia
All Theses
We discuss the potential of soft webs to enhance robotic grasping. Specifically, we explore a novel combination of compliant continuum digits interspersed with a flexible material. The resulting webbed structure offers the potential for new modes of robust and adaptive object grasping. We introduce and describe two webbed grippers featuring alternate modes of actuation: pneumatic muscles and remotely actuated tendons. Experiments with the grippers demonstrate their ability to gently capture small, fragile, and non-cooperative objects.
Optimization Of Modular, Long-Range, Ultra-Fast Optical Tweezers With Fluorescence Capabilities For Single-Molecule And Single-Cell Based Biophysical Measurements, Subash C. Godar
All Dissertations
An Optical tweezer is a tightly focused laser beam that applies and senses precise and localized optical force to a dielectric microsphere and offers a unique and effective tool for manipulating the single cell or cell components, including nucleotides and dynein motor proteins. Here, I used highly stabilized optomechanical components and ultra-sensitive detection modules to significantly improve the measurement capabilities over a wide range of temporal and spatial scales. I combined the optical tweezer-based force spectroscopy technique with fluorescence microscopy to develop an integrated high-resolution force-fluorescence system capable of measuring displacements at sub-nanometer, forces at sub-piconewton over a temporal range …
Environmental Exploration With Long, Thin Tendril Robots, Or Building Plant Based Robots And Teaching Them How To Feel, Michael Benjamin Wooten
Environmental Exploration With Long, Thin Tendril Robots, Or Building Plant Based Robots And Teaching Them How To Feel, Michael Benjamin Wooten
All Dissertations
Continuum robots offer unique potential benefits for environmental exploration, notably in using their maneuverability to navigate congested environments. In this dissertation, we show how circumnutation, a motion strategy, commonly employed by plants, can be implemented, and usefully exploited, with continuum robots. We discuss how the kinematics of circumnutation, which combines local backbone growth with periodic backbone bending, can be created using extensible continuum robot hardware. The underlying kinematics are generated by adapting kinematic models of plant growth. We illustrate the effectiveness of that approach with experimental results with a tendril robot exploring a congested environment. However, significant challenges remain in …
Ecologies Of (Domestic) Trauma, Ecologies Of (Domestic) Violence: A Rhetorical Procession Toward Mourning, Charlotte E. Lucke
Ecologies Of (Domestic) Trauma, Ecologies Of (Domestic) Violence: A Rhetorical Procession Toward Mourning, Charlotte E. Lucke
All Dissertations
In this dissertation, I posit that intimate partner violence is entrenched in an often-overlooked historical and rhetorical legacy of patriarchal cultural, structural, and direct violences. Many scholars in and outside of rhetorical studies have analyzed and critiqued public representations of trauma and violence, including intimate partner violence. Joining this conversation, I focus on the limitations in the ways influential rhetorical domains both represent and respond to people who abuse their intimate partners. Often, mass media represents people who abuse their intimate partners as individuals void of contexts. Similarly, the criminal justice system holds individuals responsible through law enforcement and incarceration. …
Effects Of Continuous In Situ Low-Dose Ionizing Radiation On Microorganisms, Molly E. Wintenberg
Effects Of Continuous In Situ Low-Dose Ionizing Radiation On Microorganisms, Molly E. Wintenberg
All Dissertations
Precise detection and monitoring of nuclear fuel cycle, enrichment, and weapon development activities are critical for supporting warfighter preparation in chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives (CBRNE) operations, clandestine activities, and nuclear compliance. A biological sensing system could serve as an alternative to traditional detection methods by using organic material naturally present in the environment to discreetly detect residual trace nuclear material. Microorganisms provide an optimal platform for an alternative sensing system; however, their response to low levels of ionizing radiation is poorly characterized. Combining the power of next-generation sequencing and transcriptomic analysis, this dissertation takes an approach to obtain …
Examining Intergenerational Relationships In The Family, Abigail Stephan
Examining Intergenerational Relationships In The Family, Abigail Stephan
All Dissertations
Intergenerational relationships are partnerships between individuals from different generations, often marked by respect, shared responsibility, reciprocity, and resilience. Within the context of families, intergenerational relationships provide a natural space for learning and development across the lifespan, especially for those belonging to non-adjacent generations. Although it has been clearly established that non-adjacent intergenerational relationships in the family context can be mutually influential, less is known about how individuals enter into these interactions and view their role as active partners, how the social and cognitive processes within the intergenerational relationship shape outcomes, and how experiences in these relationships during childhood inform perspectives, …

Developing Hydrogel-Based X-Ray Visualized Implantable Sensors To Non-Invasively Measure Ph For Tracking Tumor Response And Detecting Peritoneal Infections, Kiridena Mudiyanselage Sachindra Dulashini Kiridena
All Dissertations
The goal of my dissertation research is to develop injectable and implantable biosensors to measure tumor pH to study cancer pathophysiology and effectiveness of treatments and peritoneal infections using plain radiography. The pH in cancer tissues plays an important role in determining cancer progression and treatment. Local acidosis is believed to be an indicator of dormant regions that are more resistant to therapies, a contributor to metastasis, and influence immune responses. We are designing a hydrogel-based sensor that can be injected into tumors during needle biopsy procedures and/or procedures to add markers for image-guided therapies. The pH response of the …
Nonviral Approaches For Delivery Of Crispr-Cas9 Into Hepatocytes For Treatment Of Inherited Metabolic Disease, Tanner R. Rathbone
Nonviral Approaches For Delivery Of Crispr-Cas9 Into Hepatocytes For Treatment Of Inherited Metabolic Disease, Tanner R. Rathbone
All Dissertations
Inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs) of the liver have a collective occurrence of about 1 in 800 births. Current therapies for IMDs of the liver are limited, and the only curative option for patients is orthotopic liver transplantation. Due to shortages of organ donors, immunosuppression following the transplantation, and mortality risks associated with the procedure, alternative treatment options are necessary for curing IMDs of the liver. Therapeutic gene editing has been proposed as a potential strategy for treating IMDs of the liver. Adeno-associated viral vectors (AAVs) are the most widely used delivery method for liver-targeted gene therapies. Although widely used for …

All Dissertations
The goal of my dissertation research is to develop implantable sensors that attach to prosthesis prior to implantation and measures biomarkers of infection in joint fluid in order to detect, monitor, and study infection using plain radiography. Joint replacement surgeries are common procedures improving the mobility and lives of millions of people worldwide. Although the surgeries are generally successful, about 1% of prosthetic hips become infected. If the infections are not detected and treated promptly with antibiotics and surgical debridement, device removal is almost always required to treat the infections. Therefore, it’s important to detect post-surgery infections early and monitor …
Evaluation Of Grazing Techniques As A Nutrition Source For Horses In A Pasture Environment, Brittany Perron
Evaluation Of Grazing Techniques As A Nutrition Source For Horses In A Pasture Environment, Brittany Perron
All Dissertations
Horses require daily access to forage in order to support their gastrointestinal tract function as well as natural grazing behaviors. Well-managed pasture provides horses with a consistent forage source and diminishes health risks such as colic, ulcers and stereotypies. However, equine grazing behaviors are more intense than other livestock and may be detrimental to plant and soil health. A grazing management technique specifically for horses is necessary to prevent both health and environmental issues. The following dissertation explores both the movement of required maintenance elements, such as feed, shelter, and water, as well as the manipulation of feeding frequency and …

Heart failure (HF) is a chronic, progressive condition defined as an abnormality of cardiac function with the inability of the heart muscle to pump enough blood to meet the body’s requirements for metabolism. HF has various contributing pathologies, including hypertension (86 million Americans), myocardial infarction (MI, 800,000 Americans per year and 300,000 recurrent infarctions each year), both of which promote fibrosis. Myocardial fibrosis contributes to left ventricular (LV) dysfunction and is histologically defined by excessive deposition of fibrous tissue relative to the mass of cardiomyocytes within the myocardial tissue. Quantitatively, myocardial fibrosis is characterized by increased collagen volume fraction (CVF) …
Narrating Madness: Building Narratives Against Privileged Identity, Kristin Santa Maria
Narrating Madness: Building Narratives Against Privileged Identity, Kristin Santa Maria
All Dissertations
This dissertation examines how competing narratives related to madness and mental health can provide insight into the inconsistencies of preconceived biases that tie into privilege and power. These biases relate to identities associated with race, gender, class, and embodiment. By exploring madness narratives, we can see how madness often becomes a quality used to isolate and “other” people that act against typical societal and cultural norms. Works of fiction and nonfiction that pertain to madness narratives can either be used to perpetuate stereotypes of normalcy or as a vehicle to allow for a more open and frank discussion of madness …
