Interpreter Intervention And Participant Roles In Witness Examination, Eva Ng
Interpreter Intervention And Participant Roles In Witness Examination, Eva Ng
International Journal of Interpreter Education
The court interpreter code of ethics in general requires interpreters to restrict their function strictly to interpreting and to refrain from clarifying ambiguity with the speaker, especially with the witness. The code usually suggests that permission be sought from the court if interpreter intervention is unavoidable. Empirical studies show, however, that departure from this ethical code is commonplace. Drawing on an authentic courtroom trial in the High Court of Hong Kong, and using Goffman’s (1981) participation framework as the analytical tool, this article aims to illustrate how the court interpreter changes her participant role in the court proceedings by initiating …

Development Of Low-Cost Impedimetric Biosensors For Clinical Diagnostics And Water Testing, Andrew Lehron Cobb
Development Of Low-Cost Impedimetric Biosensors For Clinical Diagnostics And Water Testing, Andrew Lehron Cobb
All Theses
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that waterborne diseases alone account for over 3.4 million deaths per year. With such a high mortality, the need to provide a fast and accurate means of identifying the cause of the microbial infection is fundamental to the quality of care and paramount to public health. In resource-poor settings a shortage of clinics pose a major problem, as patients are required to travel long distances, many of which cannot afford the return trip to retrieve their test results. Between visits most clinics are limited to microscopic analyses, telehistology, or media-based metabolic tests, which can …
"The Wildest Stock": Service, Monarchical Grafting, And Environmental Engagement In The Winter's Tale, Kristen Joy Hixon
"The Wildest Stock": Service, Monarchical Grafting, And Environmental Engagement In The Winter's Tale, Kristen Joy Hixon
All Theses
William Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale opens by expressing the friendship of King Leontes of Sicilia and King Polixenes of Bohemia in horticultural terms and explaining how the friendship "branch[es]" with the aid of servants when the monarchs cannot meet in person (1.1.24). The tyrannical Leontes conveys the depth of his relationship to his servant Camillo by discussing the trust that establishes that relationship as a physical connection. He calls Camillo "a servant grafted in my serious trust" (1.2.247). Using lines like these, the play asks us to read its discussion of service in terms of early modern horticultural practice. However, …
In Vitro Studies Of Heparin-Coated Magnetic Nanoparticles For Potential Use In The Treatment Of Neointimal Hyperplasia, Andrew Hargett
In Vitro Studies Of Heparin-Coated Magnetic Nanoparticles For Potential Use In The Treatment Of Neointimal Hyperplasia, Andrew Hargett

With the ever-increasing prevalence of atherosclerosis, procedures such as angioplasty and stenting have become common practice, both of which are simple techniques spouting relatively satisfying results for the past several decades. While successful in opening of occluded vessels, these therapies can be met down the line with thrombosis or even repeated occlusion of the vessel, known as restenosis. Similar to the issues faced within oncology, treatment of this restenosis via widespread drug administration throughout the body is not desirable. Cardiovascular and other medical fields have begun looking into the use of magnetic nanoparticles as a drug delivery vessel. Previously, our …
Characterization Of Particulate In Vacuum Casting For Long Term Space Flight, Devin Elizabeth Gibson
Characterization Of Particulate In Vacuum Casting For Long Term Space Flight, Devin Elizabeth Gibson
All Theses
Introduction: NASA has expressed a need for a new method of treating upper extremity fractures on long range exploration missions. Currently, fiberglass casts are the gold standard for fracture treatment on Earth, but there is little to no research into alternative methods to treat/secure more serious fractures on long range. For this study vacuum sealed particulate was considered as a possible casting material. The aim of this study was to identify candidate particulates and quantify their stabilization effectiveness, create designs that incorporated the vacuum sealed particulate, and test therapeutic ultrasound's ability to penetrate the material. Materials and Methods: Samples were …

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that approximately 48 million people become sick from the consumption of food each year in the United States. Additionally, 46% of foodborne illnesses reported between 1998 and 2008 were contributed to the consumption of fresh produce. More specifically between 1996 and 2016, 41 foodborne illnesses have been reported from the consumption of sprouts. Sprouts are most often consumed raw, thus cooking is not used to prevent contamination from pathogens. The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act of 2011 has introduced new regulations for produce and sprout producers under produce safety standards. For …
Rub Some Dirt In It: Reconstructing Authentic Nineteenth-Century Great Plains' Sod Structures, Jessica Pearl Fortney
Rub Some Dirt In It: Reconstructing Authentic Nineteenth-Century Great Plains' Sod Structures, Jessica Pearl Fortney
All Theses
This thesis addresses the question: What is the best practices for reconstructing sod houses from the nineteenth century that balances authenticity and practicality. After the Homestead Act of 1862, land west of the Mississippi became easier to acquire for farm land. Since there are few trees on the Great Plains, which makes the region ideal for farming, the new settlers employed an alternative building material, sod. The prairie sod was cut into bricks and stacked to form a structure. Structures that were dug out of a hill or ravine were called dugouts and others were structures with four walls built …
Expression Patterns Of The Major Vault Protein (Mvp) And Cellular Vault Particles In Aquatic Animal Models, Alyssa L. Margiotta
Expression Patterns Of The Major Vault Protein (Mvp) And Cellular Vault Particles In Aquatic Animal Models, Alyssa L. Margiotta
All Theses
Cellular vaults are ubiquitous 13 mega Da multi-subunit structures that may have a role in nucleo-cytoplasmic transport. Seventy percent of the vault's mass consists of a ≈100 kDa protein, the major vault protein (MVP). Elevated MVP was first recognized as lung resistance protein (LRP) because metastatic lymphoid tumor cells in the lung over-expressed this protein following acquired resistance to traditional chemotherapy. Previous work in our lab screened a cDNA library constructed from channel catfish monocytes (42TA cells), whereby MVP was sequenced and found to be highly conserved compared to other vertebrates. This sequence was recently expressed as a recombinant protein …

This thesis documents a correlational study of wayfinding experience and survey and route knowledge in a large, complex building. Twelve patient transport personnel who work in a very large, regional hospital facility participated as wayfinding subject matter experts. This correlational study addresses three primary research questions. Do more experienced patient transport personnel have more accurate survey knowledge of a large, complex building than less experienced patient transport personnel? Do more experienced patient transport personnel have more accurate route knowledge of a large, complex building than less experienced patient transport personnel? Do more experienced patient transport personnel choose more efficient routes …
Endothelialization Of The Coronary Vasculature In Decellularized Heart Scaffolds, Jessica Lan Canavan
Endothelialization Of The Coronary Vasculature In Decellularized Heart Scaffolds, Jessica Lan Canavan
All Theses
In the United States, 900,000 people a year experience myocardial infarction (MI), making it the leading cause of death. Current treatment options such as coronary artery bypass procedure (CABG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) minimize damage to the myocardium, but do not guarantee restoration of blood flow and are associated with other complications such as renal failure. Heart transplants remain the sole existing therapy to restore cardiac function, but are limited by donor availability and chronic immune response. Many research groups have turned to tissue engineering to provide a strategy that restores function to the heart.
Our solution is to …

Like A Character In A Truffaut Film, Trevor Lance Seigler
All Theses
I composed these two stories in my two different Fiction Workshop classes, they both deal with mortality and the concept of what we do and how it affects others. I would like to think that they also exhibit some of the genre-bending notions I absorbed from reading Jonathan Lethem, who is the subject of the critical essay.
George Washington's Mount Vernon Stable In Context: A Comparative Analysis Of Early American Stables, Meghan Paige White
George Washington's Mount Vernon Stable In Context: A Comparative Analysis Of Early American Stables, Meghan Paige White
All Theses
As the Revolutionary War came to a close, George Washington sent orders from Pennsylvania to his Mount Vernon farm in Virginia to construct a new horse stable. Completed in 1782, this substantial brick building survives as one of the best representations between the planter-elite like Washington and the multiple roles horses played in the culture of eighteenth-century America. This thesis applies an investigation of surviving stables on the east coast and historical sources to explore the evolution of stable architecture in eighteenth and nineteenth-century America. Stables, like essentially everything else in early American life, represented the materialism, power, wealth, and …
Characterization Of Smooth Muscle Cells And Urothelial Cells Differentiated From Human Adipose Derived Stem Cells For Seeding A Bladder Tissue Biomimetic Patch, Caitlyn Ambrose
All Theses
Approximately 400 million people worldwide suffer from bladder disease, which can lead to the development of high pressure and low-compliance bladders. Current surgical solutions include replacing diseased bladder tissue with a segment of gastrointestinal (GI) tissue, referred to as a bladder augmentation. However, GI segments are known to cause a myriad of issues when implanted within the bladder, including urinary tract infection, metabolic abnormalities and abnormal drug kinetics. The objective of the present study is to investigate hADSCs as a cell source to seed a biomimetic bladder tissue patch for the purpose of bladder tissue remodeling and regeneration. hADSCs were …
Endothelialization And In Vitro Characterization Of A Small Diameter Tissue Engineered Vascular Graft For Patients With Diabetes, Eric Brandon Wright
Endothelialization And In Vitro Characterization Of A Small Diameter Tissue Engineered Vascular Graft For Patients With Diabetes, Eric Brandon Wright
All Theses
Prosthetic vascular grafting is largely successful in patients undergoing surgical intervention for vascular diseases in medium and large caliber arteries (inner diameter >6 mm). In small diameter arteries, however, prosthetic grafts are insufficiently non-thrombogenic, and autologous vein grafting and endovascular stenting are considered to be standard treatments. However, up to one third of patients lack proper donor vessels due to donor site morbidities or severe vascular disease, and stenting fails to provide long-term patency. Further, patients with diabetes have not only increased risk for the development of cardiovascular diseases, but also have poorer outcomes following intervention. To meet this need, …

The Zombi Of The British Empire: Rochester's Imperialist Drive In Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre And Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea, Chloe Whitaker
The Zombi Of The British Empire: Rochester's Imperialist Drive In Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre And Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea, Chloe Whitaker
All Theses
This paper examines the character of Rochester as he is presented both in Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre (1847) and Jean Rhys' post-colonial response work Wide Sargasso Sea (1939). In both works, Rochester is portrayed as the consummate colonist who dominates the women he comes into contact with, metaphorically turning them into his colonized possessions. In order to explore the process of feminine subjugation and colonial mastery, Rhys utilizes the figure of the zombi, a traumatized victim deprived of all free will by a sorcerous bokor who uses the zombi as a source of labor. In this metaphor, scholars and critics …

My work investigates how I can influence and alter the experience of viewers who occupy space with my installation artworks. I have been working on semi-figurative large-scale coil built ceramic sculptures with layers of drawings. Inspirations of form, color, and subjects of drawings come from both American and Japanese historical and pop cultures, which surround my life. To utilize my expression of ceramic sculpture effectively, I employ the method of narrative/storytelling approaches in my work. For my thesis, I feature walk-in installations of large-scale ceramic sculptures and drawings, which explore interrelated themes of an epic journey in the post apocalyptic …
Threats Of Disease Spillover From Domestic Dogs To Wild Carnivores In The Kanha Tiger Reserve, India, Vratika Chaudhary
Threats Of Disease Spillover From Domestic Dogs To Wild Carnivores In The Kanha Tiger Reserve, India, Vratika Chaudhary
All Theses
Many mammalian carnivore species persist in small, isolated populations as a result of habitat destruction, fragmentation, poaching, and human conflict. Their small numbers, limited genetic variability, and increased exposure to domestic animals such as dogs place them at risk of further losses due to infectious diseases. In India, dogs ranging from domestic to feral are associated with villages in and around protected areas, and may serve as reservoirs and vectors of pathogens to the carnivores within. India’s Kanha Tiger Reserve (KTR) is home to a number of threatened and endangered mammalian carnivores including tigers (Panthera tigris), leopards (Panthera pardus), wolves …

All Theses
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and radiation therapy is used as a treatment method on millions of patients each year. While the biological response of tendon tissue to high-dose radiation has been investigated over the years, the effects of low-dose gamma radiation on tendons is not well understood. The goal of this research is to investigate the impact of clinically relevant low dose gamma radiation on tendon tissue. Fresh tendons were harvested from mature porcine forefeet and exposed to 5 Gray of Cesium gamma radiation. Histological and chemical data was obtained over the course of …
Designing And Animating A Character Sprite With Modern Techniques, Wynton Redmond
Designing And Animating A Character Sprite With Modern Techniques, Wynton Redmond
All Theses
High-quality 2D animation for video game production is both strenuous and time consuming. Traditionally, 2D game animation consisted of drawing each frame by hand and processing it into a bitmap for use in-game. As every frame was individually drawn, it was difficult to create enough drawings for smooth animation as well as keep form consistent between frames. Although, this technique usually resulted in a strong sense of 3D volume and realism when well executed. Current technology allows for faster 2D animation workflows using interpolation and bone systems as well as greater consistency, smoothness, and efficiency, but oftentimes the results lose …

Injury and degeneration of rotator cuff tendons are frequent causes of shoulder disability globally, commonly affecting athletes and the elderly. Annually, there are approximately 250,000 surgeries related to the rotator cuff performed in the United States.1 With rotator cuff tears being the largest cause of rotator cuff surgery, between 10% and 40% of all rotator cuff tears are classified as massive, extending over 5 cm in length. 2,3,4,5,6 The success rate of massive rotator cuff tear repair is variable, with re-tear rates ranging from 38% to 90% depending on factors such as patient age, tear chronicity, and overall tissue quality.7,8,9,10 …
Cellular Interactions Underlying Vascular Calcification In Diabetes, Lisa Ann Larrew
Cellular Interactions Underlying Vascular Calcification In Diabetes, Lisa Ann Larrew
All Theses
Diabetes mellitus is a disease that affects about 387 million people throughout the world. It is characterized by the body's inability to secrete or respond to insulin properly. As a result, diabetes mellitus is associated with hyperglycemia, the cause of many severe complications. Calcification in blood vessel walls, one of the most adverse complications of diabetes, may trigger heart failure, hypertension, plaque rupture, stroke, and coronary ischemia. In vitro and in vivo studies suggest that vascular calcification is a regulated process involving inhibitors and activators and resembling osteogenesis in bone. High glucose levels have been shown to induce endothelial cell …
Finding Freedom For Jane: A Reading Of Subjugation, Shame, And Sympathy In Charlotte's Brontë Jane Eyre, Rebecca Shaver
Finding Freedom For Jane: A Reading Of Subjugation, Shame, And Sympathy In Charlotte's Brontë Jane Eyre, Rebecca Shaver
All Theses
In an investigation of Charlotte Bronte's novel, Jane Eyre, Jane clearly desires liberty in the form of social belonging or freedom, and makes the active choice to pursue it, but finds that liberty is ultimately best won not by an antagonistic battle, but instead through subjugation by those of a higher class than herself. As a social inferior, the mere association with a higher-class family name (whether that is through employment, marriage, etc.) is enough to set Jane's eye on the ultimate goal of total autonomous freedom through social climbing. Jane actively participates in subjugation as a means to elevate …
Fabrication And Characterization Of Heparin-Immobilized Electrospun Nanofibers For Vascular Suture Applications, Michael J. Dibalsi
Fabrication And Characterization Of Heparin-Immobilized Electrospun Nanofibers For Vascular Suture Applications, Michael J. Dibalsi
All Theses
One of the most significant complications of vascular surgery is thrombosis, which is the formation of blood clots at the surgical site. Another significant complication is stenosis - an overgrowth of cells during the healing process, which narrows the same artery the surgeons were trying to open. These complications often lead to additional surgeries and carry increased morbidity and mortality for the patients. Numerous pharmaceutical agents have been tested to prevent these complications, but the results have been disappointing. The agents either have unacceptable systemic effects, or they cannot achieve a controlled, timed release in the circulation. Heparin is the …

Exploring The Connections Between Literary Places, Literary Texts, And Tourist Performance, Alana Nicole Seaman
All Dissertations
Books and travel are inseparable. From inspiring destination choices to offering vacationers a diversion during their journeys, books and other literature have long been a part of the travel experience. In many cases, thousands of tourists trek to places of literary importance in order to participate in literature-inspired activities such as wading in the serene waters of Walden Pond (Mass. State Parks, 2015), jump frogs in the real Calaveras County (Calaveras County, 2015), and go fly-fishing in the actual river from A River Runs Through It (Hepworth, 1992). However, in many cases these tourist “performances†also appear to be reliant …
Impacts Of Laurel Wilt Disease On Native Persea Of The Southeastern United States, Timothy M. Shearman
Impacts Of Laurel Wilt Disease On Native Persea Of The Southeastern United States, Timothy M. Shearman
All Dissertations
Laurel Wilt Disease (LWD) has caused severe mortality in native Persea species of the southeastern United States since it was first detected in 2003. This study was designed to document the range-wide population impacts to LWD, as well as the patterns of mortality and regeneration in Persea ecosystems. I used Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data from the U.S. Forest Service to estimate Persea borbonia (red bay) populations from 2003 to 2011 to see if any decline could be observed since the introduction of LWD causal agents. Population estimates from 2003 to 2011 suggest that the population is declining. The …
Rearing Black Soldier Fly To Supplement Natural Populations In Waste Composting Systems, Yushin Lin
Rearing Black Soldier Fly To Supplement Natural Populations In Waste Composting Systems, Yushin Lin
All Theses
The black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens L. (Stratiomyidae; Diptera), is a common and widespread non-pest fly and an essential decomposer of organic material. Because of its ability to decompose wastes and return nutrients to the environment, it is considered to be a beneficial insect for manure management in confined animal facilities. Larvae are an excellent source of protein and other nutrients and are used for fish and animal feed. The development of efficient rearing systems for black soldier fly is important in order to provide a source of larvae to initiate soldier fly-based waste-recycling systems and to augment populations in …
