The Intermediate Subunit Of The Gal/Galnac Lectin May Play A Role In Erythrophagocytosis In Entamoeba Histolytica, Michelle Lynne Rock Aug 2016

The Intermediate Subunit Of The Gal/Galnac Lectin May Play A Role In Erythrophagocytosis In Entamoeba Histolytica, Michelle Lynne Rock

All Theses

Entamoeba histolytica is a parasite responsible for amebic dysentery and liver abscess in humans. This pathogen causes ~100,000 deaths annually in regions that cannot prevent the fecal-oral route of transmission. Adhesion to host colonic epithelium is a hallmark of infection. The galactose/N-acetylgalactosamine (Gal/GalNAc) lectin is a parasite surface receptor that regulates adhesion to host cells. This lectin is a heterotrimer consisting of Heavy (Hgl), Light (Lgl) and Intermediate (Igl) subunits. Hgl and Lgl are covalently attached to each other by disulfide bonds and interact non-covalently with Igl. Little is known about how the trimer assembles, but lipid rafts, cholesterol- and …

Mechanisms For Aerobic Degradation Of Commercial Naphthenic Acids, Samuel Louis Muller Aug 2016

Mechanisms For Aerobic Degradation Of Commercial Naphthenic Acids, Samuel Louis Muller

All Theses

Naphthenic acids (NAs) are a class of thousands of carboxylic acids associated with petroleum degradation. They become dissolved in oil sands process waters (OSPW) during the bitumen extraction process, and the resulting process waters can elicit toxicity to aquatic organisms. NAs are weakly biodegradable, but have half-lives of months to years, making it difficult to treat NAs with bioremediation. Two methods for promoting aerobic degradation (cometabolism and mycoremediation) were investigated as proof of concept for effectiveness in degrading commercial NAs. A reciprocating reactor inoculated with a white rot fungus, Pleurotus pulmonaris, was built and compared to an uninoculated reactor to …

Aerosol Removal In A Cylindrical Ultrasonic Standing Wave Field, Tyler Merrell Aug 2016

Aerosol Removal In A Cylindrical Ultrasonic Standing Wave Field, Tyler Merrell

All Theses

Aerosols are solid particles or liquid drops typically less than 100 microns in diameter, suspended in a gas. Some types of aerosols can be very hazardous. Particulate pollution from the combustion of fossil fuels and other sources is of great concern due to health problems those exposed can experience. One method for removing these particles from industrial sources is wet scrubbing, where water sprays are used to capture particles before exhausting to the environment. Wet scrubbers work well for a large range of particle diameters, but are ineffective for particles on the order of 1 µm in diameter. Particles of …

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (Uav)-Assisted Water Sampling, Cengiz Koparan Aug 2016

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (Uav)-Assisted Water Sampling, Cengiz Koparan

All Theses

Water quality assessment programs require the collection of water samples for physical, chemical, and bacteriological analysis. Lack of personnel, accessibility of water bodies, and time constraints for water sampling, especially after natural disasters and emergencies, are some of the challenges of water sampling. To overcome these challenges, a water collection mechanism was developed and mounted on a multirotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for autonomous water sampling from water bodies. The payload capacity and endurance of the UAV (hexacopter) were verified using an indoor test station. The hexacopter was equipped with floating foam, and the electronic components were coated against water …

Between Flesh And Being: Theorizing The Racial Body And The Position Of Personhood In Claudia Rankine's Citizen, Lanja Najmalddin Karim Aug 2016

Between Flesh And Being: Theorizing The Racial Body And The Position Of Personhood In Claudia Rankine's Citizen, Lanja Najmalddin Karim

All Theses

In this paper I argue that Claudia Rankine, in Citizen (2014), by concentrating on the place and position of the radicalized body, creates a technique of resistance that emerges as assemblages against contemporary racism. Citizen narrates the stories of a range of racist incidents that happen to individuals, including the author herself and celebrities in Western societies. Those incidents have been narrated and re-contextualized through a unique technique of representation, where multiple genres, such as lyric, prose, and visual images, all collaborate in telling those stories in the text. In Citizen, resistance is the predominant mode of narration. The text …

Malignant cancer cells are more effectively treated when identified early in the disease. Identification of tumors using fluorophores, small molecules that emit …

The Role The N-Terminal Domain Plays In Spidroin Assembly, Krystal Audrey Cadle Aug 2016

The Role The N-Terminal Domain Plays In Spidroin Assembly, Krystal Audrey Cadle

All Dissertations

One of the most interesting biomaterials known to man is spider silk. These fibers, composed primarily of protein, show beneficial mechanical and biological properties that have many uses in medical and industrial fields. Spider silk proteins (spidroins) are composed of three core components that consists of a C-terminal domain (CTD), repeat domain (R), and N-terminal domain (NTD). The NTD and CTD are highly conserved and are believed to form “multimeric strands” that make up spider silk. Although it is known that the NTD undergoes a conformational change that results in stable homodimer formation at acidic pH , the way in …

Ruminant Supplementation Of Gluconeogenic Substrates Via Drinking Water, Gabriela Volpi-Lagreca Aug 2016

Ruminant Supplementation Of Gluconeogenic Substrates Via Drinking Water, Gabriela Volpi-Lagreca

Dark cutting or high pH meat is found in all meat species, inducing significant losses to the meat industry. Dark cutting meat is a direct consequence of low muscle glycogen at slaughter, which affects the normal acidification of meat during rigor development, hence, the ultimate pH remains high. The ultimate pH of the meat has a great influence on certain meat quality parameters, such as color, water holding capacity, and tenderness. An animal exposed to stress previous to slaughter may significantly depletes its glycogen reserves. This situation leads to a high ultimate pH if the animal is slaughtered before it …

Tackling Adverse Environment—Molecular Mechanism Of Plant Stress Response And Biotechnology Tool Development, Ning Yuan Aug 2016

Tackling Adverse Environment—Molecular Mechanism Of Plant Stress Response And Biotechnology Tool Development, Ning Yuan

All Dissertations

Abiotic and biotic stresses such as drought, salt, nutrition starvation, and pathogen infection are major factors threatening our agricultural production. With the rapidly increasing population and limited arable land area, genetic engineering of crops for new products with more stable and higher yield than conventional cultivars under adverse environment provides a powerful new tool for use in developing novel GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) to feed the large population in the immediate future. To develop novel GMOs with enhanced performance under adverse conditions, we need first to understand molecular mechanisms underlying plant stress response. To better understand how signaling transduction pathway …

Evaluation Of High Sugar Ryegrass Varieties, Mariano Alende Aug 2016

Evaluation Of High Sugar Ryegrass Varieties, Mariano Alende

All Dissertations

Annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) is an important forage in Southeastern US. However, as in other winter annuals, concern exists about the balance between water soluble carbohydrates (WSC) and protein, which can lead to ruminal nutrient asynchrony. Lately, efforts have been done to increase the WSC content of ryegrass, and cultivars known as “high sugar varieties” have been released to the market. Several productive and environmental advantages have been suggested for these cultivars. The objective of our research was to compare conventional versus high sugar varieties under several conditions and from different approaches, to evaluate the potential of the high sugar …

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are of great interest for the development of drugs and vaccines due to their unique physicochemical properties. The high surface area to volume ratio and delocalized pi-electron cloud of CNTs promote binding of proteins to the surface forming a protein corona. This unique feature of CNTs has been recognized for potential delivery of antigens for strong and long-lasting antigen-specific immune responses. Based on an earlier study that demonstrated increased protein binding, we propose that carboxylated multiwalled CNTs (MWCNTs) can function as an improved carrier to deliver antigens such as ovalbumin (OVA). To test this hypothesis, we coated …

Electrophysiological Characterization Of Cardiac Cells Differentiated From Embryonic, Induced Pluripotent And Adipose-Derived Stem Cells For Translational Tissue Engineering Applications, Robert Marti

All Theses

Heart disease includes an array of cardiovascular diseases causing 25% of all deaths annually in the United States. Patients who live with heart disease experience significantly decreased quality of life. While current treatments on the market aim at improving heart function and cardiovascular efficiency, none are able to restore functionality to native levels. Tissue engineered approaches are becoming increasingly viewed as the definitive treatment to increasing longevity and quality of life of patients affected by heart disease. While stem cell therapies have immense potential, clinical application is still largely unsuccessful in generating healthy myocardium in patients. This study aims to …

The reasons for participating in the skillathon mainly focused on testing knowledge, future careers, winning an award, fun, friends, 4-H agent or school-based agricultural education teacher, and personal development. Thus, utilizing both short-term and long-term influences during recruitment may …

Royal Jelly Promotes Daf-16-Mediated Proteostasis To Tolerate Β-Amyloid Toxicity In C. Elegans Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Xiaoxia Wang, Min Cao, Yuqing Dong Jul 2016

Royal Jelly Promotes Daf-16-Mediated Proteostasis To Tolerate Β-Amyloid Toxicity In C. Elegans Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Xiaoxia Wang, Min Cao, Yuqing Dong

Publications

Numerous studies have demonstrated that dietary intervention may promote health and help prevent Alzheimer's disease (AD). We recently reported that bee products of royal jelly (RJ) and enzyme-treated royal jelly (eRJ) were potent to promote healthy aging in C. elegans. Here, we examined whether RJ/eRJ consumption may benefit to mitigate the AD symptom in the disease model of C. elegans. Our results showed that RJ/eRJ supplementation significantly delayed the body paralysis in AD worms, suggesting the β-amyloid (Aβ) toxicity attenuation effects of RJ/eRJ. Genetic analyses suggested that RJ/eRJ-mediated alleviation of Aβ toxicity in AD worms required DAF-16, rather …

Sulfur participates in many important mechanisms and pathways of plant development. The most common source of sulfur in soil –SO42−– is absorbed into root tissue and distributed into aerial part through vasculature system, where it is reduced into sulfite and finally sulfide within the subcellular organs such as chloroplasts and mitochondria and used for cysteine and methionine biosynthesis. MicroRNAs are involved in many regulation pathways by repressing the expression of their target genes. MiR395 family in Arabidopsis thaliana has been reported to be an important regulator involved in sulfate transport and assimilation, and a high-affinity sulphate transporter …
