Social Shaping Of Mobile Geomedia Services: An Analysis Of Yelp And Foursquare, Jordan Frith, Rowan Wilken Jun 2019

Social Shaping Of Mobile Geomedia Services: An Analysis Of Yelp And Foursquare, Jordan Frith, Rowan Wilken

Publications

In their book, Location-Based Social Media: Space, Time and Identity, Leighton Evans and Michael Saker remark on the apparent ‘death’ of location-based social networks, suggesting that location-based social networks can now be understood as ‘a form of “zombie-media” that animates and haunts other media platforms’. In this article, we use this perspective as a point of departure for a social shaping of technology-informed analysis of two key geomedia platforms: Yelp and Foursquare. With Yelp approaching its 15th year of service and Foursquare approaching its 10th anniversary, this article provides a timely opportunity to (re-)examine the significance of Yelp and …

Guiding Students Through Choppy Creative Waters: Collaborative Pedagogy To Empower Ethical Creators, Kelsey Sheaffer, Jessica Kohout-Tailor

Publications

With the rise of ‘multimodality’, students are increasingly creating digital projects that require an understanding of copyright that includes Creative Commons, to both search for and appropriately remix the original work of others. In this session, learn how two librarians collaboratively developed their student-centered pedagogy to apply active-learning strategies in the classroom for these special creative copyright sessions. In their approach, the librarians engaged the student-as-producer to make creative copyright more accessible and applicable to their projects. These instructional interventions build on the traditional lecture-style session on Copyright Law to support non-traditional projects.

Seed Rain Along A Gradient Of Degradation In Caribbean Dry Forest: Effects Of Dispersal Limitation On The Trajectory Of Forest Recovery, Brett T. Wolfe, Raúl Macchiavelli, Skip Van Bloem May 2019

Seed Rain Along A Gradient Of Degradation In Caribbean Dry Forest: Effects Of Dispersal Limitation On The Trajectory Of Forest Recovery, Brett T. Wolfe, Raúl Macchiavelli, Skip Van Bloem

Publications

Questions

Tropical dry forests that experience severe disturbances (e.g., fires) often remain degraded for long time periods, during which non-native grasses and trees dominate. One barrier to native tree regeneration in degraded areas may be seed dispersal limitation. To better understand how dispersal limitation influences recovery from degradation, we tested whether the mode and rates of seed dispersal differed in degraded sites dominated either by the exotic tree Leucaena leucocephala or open areas dominated by introduced pasture grasses. We also tested whether L. leucocephala stands facilitate the recruitment of native trees by increasing their seed input compared to open grass …

The U.S. Foreclosure Crisis And Racial Change In The American South, Jermaine Marquise Durham May 2019

The U.S. Foreclosure Crisis And Racial Change In The American South, Jermaine Marquise Durham

All Dissertations

Despite the global impacts of the U.S. foreclosure crisis, research on how this event has shaped processes of neighborhood change at the local level is relatively limited. Although the immediate neighborhood impacts of the U.S. foreclosure crisis have been well documented, the long-term influences this historic event had on processes of racial succession is yet to be fully understood. Even less research has focused on how the foreclosure crisis influenced racial transitions in small to mid-sized cities in the American South. Using both quantitative and geographical analytic techniques, this multi-case study seeks to analyze the spatial distribution of foreclosures in …

Enhancing Native Pollinators Of Watermelon Agroecosystems In South Carolina, Miriam Meryl Jenkins

All Dissertations

Widespread declines in both managed and wild pollinators worldwide has led to increasing concern for the valuable ecosystem services they provide for natural systems and agriculture. This study examined the potential benefits of diversifying agricultural landscapes by increasing floral diversity on farms on insect biodiversity and crop pollination services. My focal species, watermelon Citrullus lanatus, is an ideal species for pollination studies because it is entirely dependent on insect pollinators to set fruit. Chapter 1 investigates the effect that wildflower strips on watermelon farms has on the delivery of pollination services to watermelon by the pollinator community. Chapter 2 presents …

Integrating Self: A Story About A Tomato, Thomas Scott Rapp May 2019

Integrating Self: A Story About A Tomato, Thomas Scott Rapp

All Theses

Tomato is a two-dimensional, animated, short film about the interaction between a farmer and a tomato plant. Through conceptually-driven technique, the film intends to relate the emphasis of tactility and self-reflection in animation to the care of a plant that could provide a valuable fruit. Using digital tools, like Adobe Animate, Photoshop, After Effects, and Premiere, as well as material identification techniques, I created the film as an exhibition of a method designed to integrate hand-crafted elements into digital workflow.

Off The Top: Look Development For A Viking Story Grounded In Historical Authenticity, Philip John Hatfield

All Theses

This thesis showcases the background research and production of assets for an animated short film, Off the Top. This film tells the story of two Viking men who have a physical confrontation, which is resolved by the end of the narrative in a comedic fashion. This project draws elements from Viking history and culture to drive the design of the environment and characters in the story. Additionally, this thesis presents several methods for creating visually interesting props, environments, and characters that leverage procedurally-driven techniques for both modeling and surfacing.

Narrative And Environmentally Based Character Expression System For Gameplay-Centric Video Games, John C. Welter May 2019

Narrative And Environmentally Based Character Expression System For Gameplay-Centric Video Games, John C. Welter

All Theses

As technology progresses, so too does our ability to create visually stunning and incredibly immersive gaming experiences. With the power some consoles possess today, cinematic games have pushed the envelope of technology to deliver heavily animated, character driven stories not possible years ago. However, more “game-centric” games, in an effort to focus on gameplay and player projection, tend to neglect the possibilities of providing the same character driven experiences. In this paper, we present an animation system that would allow characters in traditionally gameplay-driven games to show the same amount of depth and growth as characters in other mediums. Our …

An Audience With The King, Charissa Eileen Fryberger May 2019

An Audience With The King, Charissa Eileen Fryberger

All Theses

This Creative Thesis attempts to contemplate one aspect of theological inquiry and puzzlement: the enigma of living between an all-powerful, omniscient Divine—the Cosmic King Who is capable of forming a sun or designing a rose—and the intimate Father-God Who holds our tears in His hand. It is an exploration of the indefinable relationship between fallible human beings and an omniscient and all-powerful, yet intimate God. Its variety of texts, though differing in form, all consider what it means to live in the tension of that paradox. The purpose of this work is not to offer answers to any of the …

Rigging Realistic Skin Deformation With Muscle Systems, Christian James Sharpe May 2019

Rigging Realistic Skin Deformation With Muscle Systems, Christian James Sharpe

All Theses

Realistic skin deformation is one of the major criteria for creating believable, dig- itally enhanced characters. Muscle simulation is one of the more popular techniques used in filmmaking. It helps bring a sense of realism to the character by adding subtle, secondary motion to the skin. Small features like these make the character appear more lifelike. This thesis focuses on the generation of a character rig and implementation of a digital muscle system for a tiger. The rig is built and animated in Maya and the Maya Muscle tool was used to create the muscle system. The muscle deformations are …

Environmental Determinants Of American Pika (Ochotona Princeps) Distribution And Abundance Across The Northern Portion Of The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Kaitlyn Hanley May 2019

Environmental Determinants Of American Pika (Ochotona Princeps) Distribution And Abundance Across The Northern Portion Of The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Kaitlyn Hanley

All Theses

Over the next century, temperatures are expected to rise by 1-4 °C in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem of the American West, and by even larger amounts in montane habitats. This warming may cause species that live there to acclimate, adapt, move, or disappear. Understanding the degree to which species' distributions are tied to temperature and other aspects of the environment is key to developing effective conservation plans. American pikas (Ochotona princeps) are small alpine lagomorphs restricted to cooler talus habitats. Pikas have exhibited varying responses across their range to the changing climate, suggesting that their distributions are not …

On The Edge Of The World: Examining Pro-Environmental Outcomes Of Last Chance Tourism In Kaktovik, Alaska, Lauren Miller

All Theses

Travel to impact-sensitive destinations has been on the rise in recent years. Coined last chance tourism (LCT), visitors are flocking to these imperiled destinations to see them before they are gone. To off-set their presence, which ultimately contributes to site degradation, a possible positive outcome of these LCT experiences is the creation of environmental ambassadors. Utilizing data collected from 189 visitor surveys, the purpose of this study is to provide a basis for understanding the visitor experience and outcomes of boat-based polar bear viewing in the Kaktovik area of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. This study contributes to current literature …

This thesis describes the development of a high-resolution storm-surge hazard database, which can be used for estimating the long-term storm surge hazard at any given site along the eastern coast of the United States (US). A stochastic hurricane track model is used to generate a set of one hundred thousand years of synthetic hurricane tracks. The SLOSH (Sea, Lake and Overland Surges from Hurricanes) model is used to simulate the storm surge in the Atlantic basin caused by selected synthetic hurricane tracks. The study domain covers a region of about 20 miles from the coastline containing more than 220,000 grid …

"I Was Quiet, But I Was Not Blind": The Surprising Consistency Of Fanny Price, Blake Elizabeth Bowens May 2019

"I Was Quiet, But I Was Not Blind": The Surprising Consistency Of Fanny Price, Blake Elizabeth Bowens

All Theses

Mansfield Park’s Fanny is not the heroine most readers expect to encounter in a Jane Austen novel. Unlike the heroines of Pride and Prejudice, or Emma, for example, she does not have to undergo any period of being wrong, and she does not have to change in order for her position to be accepted. In the midst of conversations about Fanny as a model of perfect conduct book activity, exemplary Christian morals, or Regency era femininity, readers and scholars often focus on whether or not Fanny exists as a perfect and consistent heroine, providing very strong and polarizing opinions on …

Modelling Strategies To Examine The Influence Of Fidelity Levels On Dynamic Behavior Of Multi-Mw Wind Turbine Gearbox, Jesalkumar Thakkar May 2019

Modelling Strategies To Examine The Influence Of Fidelity Levels On Dynamic Behavior Of Multi-Mw Wind Turbine Gearbox, Jesalkumar Thakkar

All Theses

With the increasing concerns about atmospheric complications, for example global warming from ozone layer depletion, the world is currently experiencing a shift from conventional resources to renewable sources of energy. Presently, wind is one of the cleanest and fastest rising energy sources and has been in growing demand. The wind turbine industry faces problems related to immature failure of wind turbine gearboxes. In most cases, these failures are traced back to gears and bearing malfunctions, such as gear micro-pitting and bearing skidding. Previous studies suggest that transmission of transverse and bending loads from the rotor to the gearbox can result …

"Pulse": Bridging The Gap Between The Tangible And The Intangible Through The Medium Of 3d Printed Stop-Motion Animation", Margaret Wages

All Theses

This thesis creates a short-form art piece primarily using modular 3D printed forms, photographed in a stop-motion animation style, and composited digitally into a finished product. It creates the lab space needed to print and photograph the piece; including lighting, set, and photography equipment. This project shows that it is possible for a single artist to come up with sufficient time-saving techniques in order to complete an entire work from start to finish. This work also shows it is possible to create a work that will inspire the emotions of fear, horror, and frustration that comes with the birth of …

Surfacing And Look Development For An Animated Film Using Per-Face Texture Mapping And Procedural Shading, Christopher Alexander Cornejo May 2019

Surfacing And Look Development For An Animated Film Using Per-Face Texture Mapping And Procedural Shading, Christopher Alexander Cornejo

All Theses

Surfacing is the process of creating materials and textures for objects in an animated film. For as much effort that is put into the story and animation of a film, an equal amount of effort must be put into surfacing and look development in order to create a world that is believable to the audience and advances the progression of the narrative. The surfaces presented in this scene draw on the works of artists such as Johan Messely, Hayao Miyazaki, and Parisian architect Georges-Eug`ene Haussmann with each artist having their own unique influence on the scene. A well-designed surface can …

Quantitative Approaches To Upland Game Bird Conservation In Kansas, Alexander Schindler May 2019

Quantitative Approaches To Upland Game Bird Conservation In Kansas, Alexander Schindler

All Theses

The Great Plains region of North America is an important ecosystem supporting many plant and animal species, but one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world. Loss and degradation of grasslands in the Great Plains region has resulted in major declines in abundance of grassland bird species. To ensure future viability of grassland bird populations, it is crucial to evaluate specific effects of environmental factors across species to determine drivers of population decline and develop effective conservation strategies. In this study, I took a multi-species approach to understanding effects of environmental factors on four species of upland game birds …

The Pedestrian Safety Problem And The Ethical Implications In The Age Of Autonomous Vehicles, Katherine Brunk May 2019

The Pedestrian Safety Problem And The Ethical Implications In The Age Of Autonomous Vehicles, Katherine Brunk

All Theses

This thesis analyzes the important topic of pedestrian safety in a world of conventional vehicles, as well as the future changes brought about by autonomous, or self-driving, vehicles. Pedestrian safety has continued to decline with increased pedestrian fatalities since 2009, as people walk more and are more distracted by handheld devices. Further complications in solving the problem with pedestrian fatalities are exacerbated by the ethical concerns that come into play when programming a robot to make decisions that a human would have been responsible for in the past.

A literature review was conducted on pedestrian safety, ethics, and autonomous vehicles. …

Humoral Immune Responses To Select Bacterial Pathogens In The American Alligator, Alligator Mississippiensis, Bailey Marie Alston May 2019

Humoral Immune Responses To Select Bacterial Pathogens In The American Alligator, Alligator Mississippiensis, Bailey Marie Alston

All Theses

The American alligator, Alligator mississippiensis, is widely distributed and abundant throughout the southeastern United States. Despite their abundance, these reptiles have not been examined for their role in environmental pathogen distribution, as a sentinel for the presence of various pathogens, or other humoral immune responses in individuals from different habitats. This study investigates the humoral immune responses of alligators to select bacterial pathogens. Immunoglobulin Y (IgY), an immunoglobulin molecule found in amphibians, birds and reptiles, similar to IgG in higher vertebrates. IgY was purified from pooled alligator serum collected in coastal South Carolina. Mouse polyclonal antisera (pAb) was then generated …

Our Educative Reticence: A Grounded Theory Of Instructors’ Not Adopting Open Textbooks, Jonathan Lashley

All Dissertations

The Open Textbook Network (OTN)—an organization based out of the University of Minnesota and comprising over 1,000 postsecondary institutions—supports the open education movement by facilitating in-person workshops about, sharing training resources for, and curating a library of peer-reviewed open textbooks. Its efforts are meant to build awareness of open education among attendees by teaching them about the positive potential of open textbooks in addressing the rising costs of attending college, waning public investment in higher education, increasing pedagogical dependence on the course materials of commercial publishers, and curbing other barriers to affordability, access, and equity in higher education. While many …

There’S More To The Story: Shedding Light On Conflict Species Identification And The Unknown Impacts Of Conflict With Predators, Diane Helene Dotson May 2019

There’S More To The Story: Shedding Light On Conflict Species Identification And The Unknown Impacts Of Conflict With Predators, Diane Helene Dotson

All Theses

Local people living near protected areas are often dependent on these areas for livestock grazing and forest product collection, and therefore may face conflict with predators. The direct impacts of predator conflict (i.e., injury/death of livestock/humans) have been widely researched, however, it is the indirect impacts (e.g., fear, stress, sleep deprivation, increased disease vulnerability, family dynamics, and time/effort of pursuing compensation), that have received little attention on general. Further, within human-wildlife conflict (HWC) literature there seems to be an underlying assumption that research participants are able to correctly identify the wildlife species that they are reporting caused both direct and …
