The reports in this issue on the finances of the First NWSA Convention and on NWSA's Project to Improve Service Learning in Women's Studies might serve as Fall reports from the National Office.
Both are about NWSA activities derived from our broad definition of women's studies; both announce long-awaited good news of what we hope will be the first of many successful conventions and projects that will bring women's studies practitioners together to share the work of transforming curriculum and educational institutions.

Emma Willard: Feminist, Anne Firor Scott
Women's Studies Quarterly
Anne Firor Scott gave the Cum Laude Address at the Emma Willard School (originally the Troy Seminary) in May 1978. We have cut the lecture only slightly to fit our space and audience. It is, as she wrote to us, "an example of trying to persuade a group of students to look at the past of their own institution, and learn from it." "I gathered," Scott added, "that the students were expecting some kind of high-minded exhortation, and were pleasantly surprised."

The Delegate Assembly, Shirley Frank
Women's Studies Quarterly
The 1979 NWSA Delegate Assembly, a body made up of more than 300 regional, caucus, and group member representatives, met for a full day at the NWSA Convention to hear reports on the state of the Association since its founding and to continue the process, begun in San Francisco, of developing governance structures and organizational priorities.
Reports were presented by Jan Meriwether, who spoke for the 1978-79 Steering Committee and described the activities of the Coordinating Council over the past two years; by Elaine Reuben, NWSA Coordinator, who reported on the efforts and accomplishments of the National Office in its …

Brief, A-Mazing Movements: Dealing With Despair In The Women's Studies Classroom, Cheri Register
Women's Studies Quarterly
Women's studies majors at the University of Minnesota are required to take two quarters of a course called Women's Studies Seminar some time in their junior or senior year. While the theme of the seminar varies from quarter to quarter , its underlying purpose is constant: "to allow students to direct knowledge and methodology gained from courses and experience toward topics of an interdisciplinary nature with a focus on women." The variant that I taught in the fall of 1978 was called Feminist Learning: The University and Beyond. Its intent was to help students become conscious of the learning process …

Debate On Graduate Women's Studies At George Washington University, Rosemary Beavers, Carol Bros, Patricia Mcdonough, Terry Savage, Lois West, Phyllis M. Palmer
Women's Studies Quarterly
The M.A. program in women's studies at George Washington University is undergoing dramatic changes in focus and structure. As students and graduates, we believe these changes raise questions about the quality of our Women's Studies Program, especially its lack of feminist focus and content.
A radical feminist believes that women are a distinct group, restricted by custom and law from complete participation in society. Moreover, feminists believe that women's lives—and the female experience—have worth and should be preserved. Therefore, feminists strive for equity, recognition of the importance of the female world, and fundamental change in the social order.

It's been a little more than a year now that I've been reporting on the Association in these columns, a little more than two years since there has been a National Women's Studies Association to report on. When friends and supporters ask, "How is it going?'" I've been forced to give a rather cryptic-seeming reply: "It's going steadily better, so even more is expected; but we hardly have resources to meet the original expectation, so sometimes it feels like it's going worse."
Often the next question from members has been, "When are we going to have the Convention?'" A Convention, …

The Coming Of Age Of The Berkshire Conference, Alison Bernstein
Women's Studies Quarterly
Over twelve hundred people attended the Fourth Berkshire Conference on the History of Women, which took place on August 23-25, 1978, at Mt. Holyoke College. The program included more than eighty different papers, topics, and presentations. Clearly, the Berkshire Conference, which this year celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the original group, has come of age. It has become an acceptable way for historians to make their reputations in the profession, and people are eager to list their participation on their resumes. Since 1973, when the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians orchestrated the first of these gatherings at Douglass College and …

FROM THE NATIONAL OFFICE
Summer is traditionally known as a "slow" season in the Washington area, and an organization like NWSA, involving so many students and teachers, also seems to "take a break" between semesters. I can't speak for the Federal folk—except to note that July's march on the Capitol was followed by their extending the deadline for ratification of the ERA—but our work continued.

Women's Studies At Barnard College: Alive And Well And Living In New York, Hester Eisenstein
Women's Studies Quarterly
It may seem somewhat confusing to be reading an article in 1978 on the new Women's Studies Program at Barnard College. After all, people say, haven't you had women's studies there for years? The answer is, well, yes and no. Of course there have been women's studies courses at Barnard for many years. Annette Baxter's History of American Women was one of the earliest courses in the country, first taught in the fall of 1966. Similarly, Catharine R. Stimpson introduced a course on Images of Women in Literature in the spring of 1971. The Barnard Women's Center was begun in …

FROM THE NATIONAL OFFICE
The 1978-79 academic year promises to be an important and productive time for NWSA.
I am very pleased to be able to report that the Association has received a small grant from The Ford Foundation, $25,000 for a period of fifteen months, to support and strengthen this office and its capacity to reach and serve persons and groups working in women's studies.
This grant will make it possible to prepare and distribute membership and other Association materials throughout the country, will allow the Association's Steering Committee to meet and to communicate more effectively with …
