Examining Risk Factors For Comorbidity Between Posttraumatic Stress Disorder And Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder In A Sample Of Trauma-Exposed Transgender Adults, Dylan Seeley Jan 2025

Examining Risk Factors For Comorbidity Between Posttraumatic Stress Disorder And Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder In A Sample Of Trauma-Exposed Transgender Adults, Dylan Seeley

Theses and Dissertations

Comorbid PTSD-OCD post trauma exposure is understudied. Little research examines specific risk factors and marginalized populations. This study examined gender-based victimization, emotional avoidance, and executive functioning as risk factors. Findings suggest gender-based victimization is a unique gender minority stressor that may pose significant risk for transgender populations.

Using Spatial Network Analysis To Explore Migration Of Extended Families In Historical Research, Rock Miller Jan 2025

Using Spatial Network Analysis To Explore Migration Of Extended Families In Historical Research, Rock Miller

Theses and Dissertations

This project proposes a geoinformatics approach for understanding the migration of extended families in historical contexts. It uses full-count longitudinal census data (developed by the Minnesota Population Center) and graph methods to define multi-generational extended family relationships and to model the locational structures of these families as a spatial network. Graph algorithms and mapping methods are used to interrogate these structures as reflections of the patterns of family outmigration and extension over time. The study is based on a set of extended families resident in a 15-county study area in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky in 1870, and their evolution …

Structures Of Feeling: Zoe Leonard And The Photographic Archive, Anika Zempleni Jan 2025

Structures Of Feeling: Zoe Leonard And The Photographic Archive, Anika Zempleni

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines Zoe Leonard’s work with photographic archives. Focusing on three of Leonard’s archive-based projects—The Fae Richards Photo Archive (1993-96), You see I am here after all (2008), and In the Wake (2015-16)—this thesis argues that these works are connected through frameworks of feeling and subjectivity.

As a rare extant example of neo-Islamic interior design, it provides a new lens on Orientalism in American domestic architecture and a new perspective on Mrs. Nickerson, a little-known female tastemaker of her time.

For Now We See Through A Darkened Mirror, But Then Face To Face: Striving To See Christ ‘Beneath The Veil’ In A Fourteenth-Century French Book Of Hours, Daniel S. Berman Jan 2025

For Now We See Through A Darkened Mirror, But Then Face To Face: Striving To See Christ ‘Beneath The Veil’ In A Fourteenth-Century French Book Of Hours, Daniel S. Berman

Theses and Dissertations

M.90’s folio 130r evoked spiritual union with God in the Eucharist and in Heaven, and the concomitant need for repentance if divine union in any form could be achieved. It was also an authoritative relic of Christ’s body which helped the worshiper imaginatively reconstruct that body in their own space.

Social Networks And Behavioral Adaptation Of Serrano Horses In A Rewilding Initiative In Spain, Ashley Bruno Jan 2025

Social Networks And Behavioral Adaptation Of Serrano Horses In A Rewilding Initiative In Spain, Ashley Bruno

Theses and Dissertations

Rewilding is a conservation measure that involves actively relocating species or restricting human land use to improve ecosystem sustainability. However, critics raise concerns that rewilding privileges ecosystem function over endangered species. Due to a lack of monitoring around species’ relocations, uncertainty lies in ecological outcomes and psychological, social, cultural impacts on affected animals. For this project, we collaborated with the non-profit Rewilding Europe that sought to conserve Serrano horses (Equus caballus), an ancient and under-studied breed of Spanish horse by relocating 11 individuals to a protected site in Guadalajara, Spain in June 2022. Our research aimed to address …

‘Keeping It Real’ Goes Wrong: Deconstruction Of Masculinity In The Work Of Jay-Z And Kendrick Lamar, Leo Mcmahon Jan 2025

‘Keeping It Real’ Goes Wrong: Deconstruction Of Masculinity In The Work Of Jay-Z And Kendrick Lamar, Leo Mcmahon

Theses and Dissertations

Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar use their latest albums, 4:44 and Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers, to address the wake of damage their behaviors have caused. On a personal level each artist apologizes to their wife for infidelities, but along the way they deconstruct performances of masculinity that have dominated popular hip-hop music since the late 1980's. Highlighting the pressure the music industry puts on hip-hop artists to perform a hyper-sexual, hyper-violent masculinity, I argue that the artists join the genre of African-American autobiography to reveal the inauthentic performances of 'realness' in hip-hop. Posturing as representatives of African-American men, …

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores how literature and music, including titles by Yuri Herrera, Gloria Anzaldúa, and Los Tigres del Norte, reflect evolving Latinx identities amidst socio-political pressures. It emphasizes self-awareness as a tool for change, portraying Latinx identity as dynamic, shaped by history, and continuously negotiated in resistance to marginalization.

Body Of Work: Wax As Medium In Art And Science In Enlightenment Bologna, Kristen Pou Jan 2025

Body Of Work: Wax As Medium In Art And Science In Enlightenment Bologna, Kristen Pou

Theses and Dissertations

Eighteenth-century Bologna is well known for its body of accurate and precise wax anatomical models. However, wax was also used for non-scientific purposes: for portraiture and religious artworks. This paper sets forth an argument to explain the scholarly neglect of enlightenment Bolognese waxworks that did not depict anatomized human bodies.

False Awakenings, Stevie Knauss Jan 2025

False Awakenings, Stevie Knauss

Theses and Dissertations

This paper discusses the boundary between dreams and reality, and offers some unconventional techniques for discerning the difference. It describes Knauss’s various performance rituals developed around a case study that traces the genealogy of a ringtone. This study attempts (and fails) to use cultish thinking as a means of deprogramming and poisonous distraction as a cure for attentional assault.

Politicize The Workplace, Benjamin E. Douglas Jan 2025

Politicize The Workplace, Benjamin E. Douglas

City University of New York Law Review

The United States has long been exceptional among liberal states in both its lack of workers’ rights and the undemocratic character of its electoral politics. In this Article, I argue that these two phenomena are related: the power that business managers and owners have over their employees has a depoliticizing, anti-democratic effect. It discourages people with a boss—that is, most working-age people—from speaking their mind, while also preventing them from banding together for mutual benefit and the realization of shared values.

I begin by discussing the United States’ democracy deficit, as illustrated in low voter turnout and the weakness of …

Increasing Humanities And Stem Pipelines: Associations Between Student Characteristics And Academic Outcomes, David Wutchiett, A. W. Logue, Zun Tang, Vita Rabinowitz Jan 2025

Increasing Humanities And Stem Pipelines: Associations Between Student Characteristics And Academic Outcomes, David Wutchiett, A. W. Logue, Zun Tang, Vita Rabinowitz

Publications and Research

Humanities and STEM disciplines may face shortages of college graduates, particularly from underrepresented demographic groups. Using multilevel generalized linear models, we evaluated associations between student characteristics and 6-10-year academic outcomes in humanities and STEM pipelines from associate’s major declaration through post-enrollment wages among 92,169 first-time community college students. Nonarts humanities majors were more likely to graduate and begin graduate study. STEM majors earned higher wages after terminating their studies. To increase the output and diversity of the humanities and STEM pipelines, students’early selection of humanities-related majors should be increased, and STEM students’persistence and degree completion should be prioritized.

“We Were Put Out Of Good Jobs”: Women Night Workers In New York And The Origins Of The Women’S Equal Opportunity League, R.B. Tiven Jan 2025

“We Were Put Out Of Good Jobs”: Women Night Workers In New York And The Origins Of The Women’S Equal Opportunity League, R.B. Tiven

Publications and Research

In the 1910s, U.S. social reformers advocated for labor laws to protect women who worked in factories. The laws included bans on women working at night. In New York, a small contingent of night-working women who had lost their jobs objected. Arguing that the laws were paternalistic and harmful, they formed the Women’s Equal Opportunity League. The group opposed all single-sex laws and ultimately won repeal of New York’s night work ban for printers, elevator operators, and transit workers. Night work was the stage on which reformers’ ideas about the greater good conflicted with arguments for women’s autonomy. Whether and …

“Democracy,” Usa, Marc Edelman Jan 2025

“Democracy,” Usa, Marc Edelman

Publications and Research

What does it mean to be an effective citizen in a democracy? Answering this question requires unpacking “democracy” and an analysis of institutions that systematically disempower and alienate citizens. This paper briefly examines the contributions of psychoanalysis to understanding democracy and authoritarianism. It scrutinizes U.S. governance institutions and points to democratic deficits and backsliding present even before Trump 1.0 and 2.0. These range from the Electoral College, the Senate, and the Supreme Court to the Federal Communications Commission. All contributed to institutionalizing minority rule and elite capture. Governance institutions failed to deliver what the American people tell opinion pollsters they …

No Remedy For Colonization, Sigrid Vendrell Polanco Jan 2025

No Remedy For Colonization, Sigrid Vendrell Polanco

City University of New York Law Review

The United States purports to maintain a democratic relationship with its inhabited territories, yet the Supreme Court continues to uphold twentieth century laws that affirm rather than abrogate colonial policies. The gap between how the United States idealizes democracy and its real world application, especially in its five colonized territories (Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, the United States Virgin Islands, and American Samoa), is not just growing – it is becoming a chasm. These colonies are currently referred to as United States territories. In 2023, the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico experienced a controversial sovereignty challenge …

State Takeover Laws (Re)Visited: School Board Leadership As White Property, Steven L. Nelson, Ericka Love

City University of New York Law Review

This Article leverages Cheryl Harris’s Whiteness as Property to better understand the state takeover of public schools in Houston, Texas. In doing so, the Article recounts the history of state takeovers of public schools and districts before highlighting how whiteness as property has been applied in research in the field of education. The Article shares the specific facts about the state takeover of public schools in the Houston Independent School District ahead of applying the four rights inherent in Harris’s Whiteness as Property. Pols 3014w Research Strategies In Public Policy, Sevdenur Koru Jan 2025

Pols 3014w Research Strategies In Public Policy, Sevdenur Koru

Open Educational Resources

Anthropological, psychological, political, social, and economic arguments and knowledge frequently depend on the use of numerical data. An anthropologist might examine how population differences in genes explain population differences in health outcomes; a psychologist might hypothesize that I.Q. is attributable to environmental or genetic factors; a politician might claim that handgun control legislation will reduce crime; a sociologist might assert that social mobility is more limited in the United States than in other countries, and an economist might declare that globalization lowers the incomes of U.S. workers. How can we evaluate these issues and arguments? Using examples from anthropology, psychology, …
