Navigating The Gaze: Young People's Intimate Knowledge With Surveilled Spaces At School, Patricia Krueger

The 1980s introduced numerous state and federal policies that created a similar ideology of discipline and punishment in the educational system and the criminal justice system, a phenomenon known today as the school-to-prison pipeline. Several critical elements are involved in the production and maintenance of the school-to-prison pipeline, such as zero tolerance regulations, surveillance technologies, and strengthened in-school discipline practices. In this dissertation I argue that these elements of the pipeline maintain a strong presence and occupy the physical spaces of public schools. Moreover, surveillance cameras and police officers are most often installed in the cities' most under-resourced public schools, …

Legal and public policy ideas and concepts are known to traverse national borders. The rapidity of this multinational exchange of ideas has been substantially enhanced through the technological revolution over the past two decades. How a nation adopts or rejects particular ideas and concepts reflects on its particular history, culture and priorities. The establishment of legal protections for privacy against intrusions by governments, employers, companies and individuals represents a concept that has been adopted in different ways by other nations. The Task Force has generally concluded that distance learning initiatives should only go forward with the full commitment of the college's leadership, made real by dedicated resources and personnel, and carried forward by organizational structures and policies designed to best deliver online education.
The Task Force surveyed John Jay faculty, students and administrators about their experiences with online learning at the college, finding an acceptance of distance learning and an anticipation of its expansion. To assist in furthering its mission, John Jay College engaged in the development of the following three year Strategic Plan for Information Technology during the spring semester of 2007. The planning effort was headed by the Planning Subcommittee (see Appendix-1) of the Technology Advisory Committee (TAC) and was designed to identify areas of need and opportunities for improvement within the existing College technology environment that would support the College’s achievement of the goals, objectives, and outcomes specified within the Comprehensive Action Plan 2005-2010.
