Nwsa As Metaphor For The United States, Dearbhal Nicharthaigh
Nwsa As Metaphor For The United States, Dearbhal Nicharthaigh
Women's Studies Quarterly
The Convention at Storrs was not only my first experience of the NWSA in action but also my first experience of the United States. Having followed Storrs with trips to women's studies centers in New York, Washington, and Boston, I found two facts emerging:
1. There are three estates of persons in the United States: taxi drivers, hotel workers, and feminists. This last is by far the largest of the three.
2. There are very few men in America.
So much for cross-cultural perspectives!
In Irish society there is little racial diversity, though much latent racism. "Otherness" is defined more …

Teaching The Feminist Minority, Barbara Hillyer Davis
Teaching The Feminist Minority, Barbara Hillyer Davis
Women's Studies Quarterly
In women's studies conferences during the past few years, I have heard many descriptions of pedagogical approaches to specific student groups—working women, displaced homemakers, business majors, and so on. I admire and learn from these presentations and at the same time I am uneasy. For some reason my classes are never like those described. The longer I teach them, the less homogeneous they seem. I am working out my role as a women's studies teacher in a university in which—as in most others, I suspect—no class consists of just working-class women, just reentry women, just Native American women. It is …

Rules Of Order: Or So To Speak, Arthur Emanuel Blank
Rules Of Order: Or So To Speak, Arthur Emanuel Blank
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
How members of a social unit acquire their shared knowledge about the social world was approached in Sherif's (1935, 1936) writings on norm formation and in the phenomenological descriptions of Schutz (1971, 1973) and Berger and Luckmann (1967). Both traditions presume that shared understandings originate in face-to-face encounters, but they diverge in that the phenomenologists argue that talk, and the construction of "typifications," plays a prominent role in the acquisition of shared knowledge. For the phenomenologists, a "typification" enables members to categorize behavior as a known event and permits individuals to consider disparate behaviors as belonging to the same class …

Women Mathematicians: A Bibliography, Karen D. Rappaport
Women Mathematicians: A Bibliography, Karen D. Rappaport
Women's Studies Quarterly
Although long ignored or unrecognized, there have been several notable women in the history of mathematics. That the list is not long is due to the barriers presented to women trying to study mathematics. Those who were able to learn the subject encountered many more difficulties in their attempts to apply their knowledge. Yet in spite of these difficulties there were women who, because of circumstances, force of will, and/or brilliance, were able to achieve some recognition.

Women's Studies Quarterly
Despite hazards both external and internal, the Women's Studies Program at San Diego State University (SDSU) has now survived eight years, has been strengthened in the process, and has moved in new directions. Designated a "program" in 1970, it is in fact a functioning "department," thanks to two successive supportive deans.
Funded initially by the SDSU Foundation in a period of militant feminism, in 1974 Women's Studies was assimilated into the administrative structure of the College of Arts and Letters. In the California State University system, funding for academic programs is determined almost exclusively by student enrollment. Departmental status for …

Modes Of Representation, The Epistemic Subject And Developmental Word Association Phenomena, Ellen M. Gerschitz
Modes Of Representation, The Epistemic Subject And Developmental Word Association Phenomena, Ellen M. Gerschitz
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study was devised to investigate the developmental syntagmaticparadigmatic word association shift. In syntagmatic associations the stimulus and associative response are of different grammatical form classes and appear to be grammatically continuous, as response may follow stimulus in an utterance (e.g. cat-meows). These are the predominant responses of children before the ages of six to eight. Older children and adults shift to making paradigmatic associations in which stimulus and response are from the same form class and may be substituted for one another in an utterance (e.g. cat-dog). This shift was explained in terms of underlying symbolic mediational processes and …

Linguistic Nature Of Prenasalization, Mark H. Feinstein
Linguistic Nature Of Prenasalization, Mark H. Feinstein
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The linguistic nature of the class of sounds which are traditionally called "prenasalized consonants" (PNCs) has never been adequately explored. The purpose of this work is to provide a descriptively adequate framework in which to characterize PNCs, and to express their behavior most generally. This is done within the theory of generative phonology (essentially the Standard Theory of Chomsky and Halle 1968), incorporating a theory of markedness and syllabification. It is argued that PNCs cannot be described adequately as monosegmental entities in linguistic theory. Rather, PNCs in all languages are claimed to be sequences of homorganic nasal and oral consonant …

Review Of We Become New: Poems By Contemporary American Women, Florence Howe
Women's Studies Quarterly
We Become New: Poems by Contemporary American Women edited by Lucille Iverson and Kathryn Ruby. Bantam, 1975.
An anthology of 43 contemporary poets, this one is frankly "feminist" in its orientation. The editors chose poems that define "those themes at the core or root of the new and vital image of woman emerging from our present women's movement."

Since the end of spring term 1975, Michigan State University has had a formal undergraduate program in women's studies. The program is called a "thematic concentration ," a new device at M.S.U. for facilitating interdisciplinary work in selected areas at no extra cost to the university (there are also thematic concentrations in Jewish, Islamic and film studies). For the student, this entails completing a minimum of 0 credits, or five to seven courses, chosen from at least three disciplines from an official list of women's studies courses approved by the university curriculum committee. Upon the student's graduation, the assistant dean …

Women In High School History Textbooks, Phyllis Arlow, Merle Froschl
Women's Studies Quarterly
Concerned about the inclusion of women in the secondary school's social studies curriculum, we are interested in locating those aspects of women's lives that have been most neglected in standard history texts and in assessing the quality of such information that is included.
We began this study by examining 14 currently used textbooks (see bibliography) for the following: the listings of women in the index and table of contents; the amount of coverage given to prominent women; the inclusion of minority women; the choice and number of illustrations of women; and the suggested further readings on women. We looked for …
