Review Of Women In Perspective: A Guide To Cross-Cultural Studies, Susan Lowes
Women's Studies Quarterly
WOMEN IN PERSPECTIVE: A GUIDE TO CROSS CULTURAL STUDIES, by Sue-Ellen Jacobs (University of Illinois Press, 1974: $3.45). It's hard to believe that an extended bibliography could be an underground classic, but in a sense this one was until this inexpensive paperback edition came out. Before that it circulated as a two-inch thick mimeographed 8½ x 11 tome. As a reference, this book is invaluable and should be useful to people in many fields—anthropology, sociology, political science, etc.

from SANTA ANA COLLEGE
Santa Ana College (SAC), a two-year community college in southern California, is offering a unique program in women's studies. Beginning in the academic year 1975-1976, SAC is making a major in women's studies available. The program is designed to meet a comprehensive set of specific feminist objectives and goals. Accordingly, it is one of the first community colleges in the nation to adopt a commitment to feminism far more solid and long term than the typical patchwork "course-here-and-there" approach that most two-year colleges use in this subject area...

FEMINIST LITERARY CRITICISM: EXPLORATIONS IN THEORY, edited by Josephine Donovan (The University Press of Kentucky, 1975.) 81 pp. Five essays never before published plus the editor's brief preface and afterword, this slim volume is a useful addition to the growing shelf of feminist criticism.

Review Of Nonsexist Education For Young Children: A Practical Guide, Selma Greenberg

NONSEXIST EDUCATION FOR YOUNG CHILDREN: A PRACTICAL GUIDE, edited by Barbara Sprung (New York: Citation Press, 1975, $3.25). I can sum up my response to this publication in four words: Buy it! Read it! Although primarily designed for teachers and administrators of early childhood education programs, it will interest the parents of young children, particularly those involved in cooperative or parent-directed early childhood programs. However, all persons interested in the reduction and elimination of sexism in the educational process will find this book well-written, well-documented, and sound in its views of past and present early childhood education. The commitment to …

Although we agree that Shirley Temple is an example of a precocious, active child, we are deeply concerned with the suggestion that her movies be revived for the purpose of providing a role model for the current generation of children. We are specifically troubled by both the presentation of ethnic people of color in her films and her relationships with them.
Second Berkshire Conference On The History Of Women, Mary Dunn
Second Berkshire Conference On The History Of Women, Mary Dunn
Women's Studies Quarterly
The Berkshire Conference of Women Historians decided in 1972 to lend support to research in the history of women. The field was regarded with some suspicion by many historians who did not see it as legitimate, and insisted that it was a "fad" whose time would soon pass. Moreover, too many people doing research in the field were working in isolation; rarely does one history department employ more than one person working in the history of women. Professors Lois Banner and Mary Hartman made the first proposal for a conference which would assert our belief that the history of women …

Administering A Women's Studies Program, Juanita H. Williams
Women's Studies Quarterly
The essay that follows answers some of the questions posed in last issue's Editorial. It was first read at the Annual Meeting of the American Psychological Association in August 1973. Comments in the form of correspondence or essays will be welcome.
The Women's Studies Program at the University of South Florida completed its first full year of operation in August 1973; and concomitantly, I concluded my first year as an administrator of the Program. Is administering a women's studies program any different from administering a history or an economics department? In some respects not. All department chairpersons and program directors …

Evaluating A Women's Studies Course, Joan Borod, Susan Dorsky, Carol Hull, Ellen Keller
Women's Studies Quarterly
Some fifty women attended the first Women's Studies Evaluation Conference in June 1973, at Wesleyan University. About half had previously taught women's studies courses. Literature and the social sciences were heavily represented; there were no hard scientists. We came with questions about the value, even the possibility, of evaluating women's studies courses and programs. We wondered whether any measuring technique could isolate one class as the cause of change in a student. We questioned social science methodology, and we speculated about possible alternative methodologies.

Women's Studies Quarterly
Women's studies at the State University of New York at Albany began in the fall of 1971 with a course on Women in Modern Literature offered through the School of General Studies. The following fall the faculty Women's Caucus at SUNY/Albany formed a subcommittee to develop a women's studies program, which by the spring of 1973 offered an undergraduate minor. We now face new decisions.

The growth of women's studies in the past two years has been phenomenal. In 1971, when Female Studies III (the last volume in this series with similar content) was published, there were about 600 courses, about twenty programs. There are now well over 2000 courses and over eighty programs. Geographically they range in the United States from Orono, Maine to Honolulu, Hawaii, …

How It Works Out: The Women's Studies Graduate, Nancy Jo Hoffman
How It Works Out: The Women's Studies Graduate, Nancy Jo Hoffman
Women's Studies Quarterly
We're all so busy developing our own women's studies programs, creating new curriculum, hassling over funding, over internal governance and community-related programs, that most of us rarely have time to ask how women's studies affects the work lives of students once they leave the university for full-time participation in the real anti-feminist world. But a program that has been functioning for several years produces graduates: what are they up to? Historically, women in America have been the temporaries in the labor force—though one can be temporary 40 hours a week, for 40 years of one's life. Has women's studies begun …

As the University of Hawaii seeks to cut its budget and its position count, Women's Studies at the Manoa campus can only hope that its modest requirements, low profile, absence of an administrative head, and experience in developing within the most precarious of situations may allow it to survive. None of the faculty have tenure; only two out of eight have career ladder positions; three of our faculty will not know until late summer whether they have even part-time jobs; one has been fired; and the rest have job security for one more year.

Wesleyan Conference Considers How To Evaluate Women's Studies, Sheila Tobias, Lorelei Brush, Alice Gold
Wesleyan Conference Considers How To Evaluate Women's Studies, Sheila Tobias, Lorelei Brush, Alice Gold
Women's Studies Quarterly
What is the general impact of women's studies? Is our investment in women's studies courses the best way to improve the higher education of women? Concerned and curious about these questions, a group of Wesleyan University faculty began in March 1973 to look into the possibility of evaluating women's studies. After preliminary discussion and research, the group decided to invite teachers of women's studies to meet with social scientists knowledgeable about evaluative research to raise the question of evaluation. With the assistance of the Ford Foundation, which made a small grant available for preliminary conferences, a meeting was held on …
