West German Feminist Book Publishers, Mary Grunwald
Women's Studies Quarterly
Feminist publishers are the sensation in the German book trade. Fifteen participated in the October 1978 Frankfurt Book Fair—up from five at the previous year's fair; but even five had created a stir in the establishment. The entire phenomenon has sprung up in four years, a measure of the great accomplishment of the women's movement in a society that, compared to that of the United States or England, holds women in open contempt.
Far and away the biggest, most stunningly successful enterprise is the Frauenoffensive Verlag in Munich. Its rise to a snug place among established publishers was aided by …

Teachers' Institute For Equality In Education Held At The University Of Arizona, Myra Dinnerstein, Brenda Even, Betty Newlon, Sherry O'Donnell
Women's Studies Quarterly
Women from the Tucson community and the University of Arizona collaborated to design a two-week Teachers' Institute for Equality in Education. Held last June on the university campus, the Institute was designed to help Arizona teachers of grades K through 12 develop nonsexist classroom methods and materials. The many inquiries we have received from other educators and women's studies personnel throughout the country suggest that information about our program will help others design similar institutes in their own regions.
We planned our Institute for the summer, since there is little time or money for bringing women's studies information to elementary …

Women's Studies Programs offering graduate degrees recently responded to the following questions:
1. What is the curricular shape and major emphasis of your program? How flexible is it? How many (and which) credits and other requirements must be completed for the degree? Name your degree(s).
2. What kinds of students are you interested in? What are your official (and unofficial) requirements and expectations of students? Provide relevant information about application deadlines, interviews etc.
3. What is the cost of your program? Are forms of financial aid or teaching assistantships available? Is housing available or especially difficult or expensive to obtain? …

Part-Time Work And Part-Time Leave, Sheila Tobias
Part-Time Work And Part-Time Leave, Sheila Tobias
Women's Studies Quarterly
The Modern Language Association convention in December 1977 included a panel on the subject of "Women and Part-Time Work." Joanne Spencer Kantrowitz, moderator, explained that, in forming the panel at the request of the Commission on the Status of Women, her "one objective was to create a group where men and women could discuss, together (and dispassionately, if possible), an area where women are consistently "used."
"In recent years," Kantrowitz noted, "the part-time category has become a male professional problem, too, as some institutions have seized on it as a convenient cost-cutting device which uses the surplus of …

Women's Studies At Barnard College: Alive And Well And Living In New York, Hester Eisenstein
Women's Studies Quarterly
It may seem somewhat confusing to be reading an article in 1978 on the new Women's Studies Program at Barnard College. After all, people say, haven't you had women's studies there for years? The answer is, well, yes and no. Of course there have been women's studies courses at Barnard for many years. Annette Baxter's History of American Women was one of the earliest courses in the country, first taught in the fall of 1966. Similarly, Catharine R. Stimpson introduced a course on Images of Women in Literature in the spring of 1971. The Barnard Women's Center was begun in …

Closeup: Women's Studies Department At San Diego, Marilyn J. Boxer
Women's Studies Quarterly
Despite hazards both external and internal, the Women's Studies Program at San Diego State University (SDSU) has now survived eight years, has been strengthened in the process, and has moved in new directions. Designated a "program" in 1970, it is in fact a functioning "department," thanks to two successive supportive deans.
Funded initially by the SDSU Foundation in a period of militant feminism, in 1974 Women's Studies was assimilated into the administrative structure of the College of Arts and Letters. In the California State University system, funding for academic programs is determined almost exclusively by student enrollment. Departmental status for …

On Teaching A Feminist Writing Workshop, Francine Krasno
On Teaching A Feminist Writing Workshop, Francine Krasno
Women's Studies Quarterly
What is a feminist writing workshop? Is it a group of writers who share certain political beliefs? Is it an all-female group? Is it a workshop in which one's writing is labeled "feminist"? What is feminist writing anyway?
Feminist writing has as many definitions as the phrase "women's movement," but I will explain what it means to me. Feminist writing makes a conscious attempt to show the lives of women as women see them, not as reflections of male fantasies or sexist myths; feminist writing uses language in new ways, considers the oppressive ways it has been used and changes …

Gender Role Of Male Pseudohermaphrodites In The Dominican Republic, Sara V. Mallea
Gender Role Of Male Pseudohermaphrodites In The Dominican Republic, Sara V. Mallea
Theses and Dissertations
This study introduces factors in the post-pubertal change of gender role in a group of male pseudohermaphrodites in the Dominican Republic. The individuals grow up as girls because of ambiguous genitalia at birth. Upon the onset of puberty, with development of scrotum and phallus, they generally select adult male models to emulate as their future role behavior. The essay describes the socio-cultural setting in which the children are raised and proposes a theory that differential socialization of boys and girls and adult access to resources are contributing elements in the decisions to switch gender roles. At the time of the …

Women's Studies In Its Second Phase, Gayle Graham Yates
Women's Studies Quarterly
A personal statement written for tbe program at tbe University of Minnesota and presented at a brown bag lunch.
Women's studies is in its seventh year nationally, its fifth year here, at least under that title. It is appropriate to take stock now and ask why women's studies? What is it about? Where is it going?
Women's studies was born out of the women's movement, is still a child of the women's movement—the academic branch of that family. The women's movement is in what I would now call its fourth phase; women's studies is in a parallel second stage.
