Large Pelvic Tubercle In Orangutans Relates To The Adductor Longus Muscle, Brian M. Shearer, Magdalena Muchlinski, Ashley S. Hammond
Large Pelvic Tubercle In Orangutans Relates To The Adductor Longus Muscle, Brian M. Shearer, Magdalena Muchlinski, Ashley S. Hammond
Publications and Research
Orangutan pelves commonly exhibit a large, projecting tubercle in the iliopubic region, historically assumed to homologous to the pubic tubercle in humans. However, it is not clear whether this tubercle is a unique feature of Pongo, or if it is anatomically homologous with the human pubic tubercle when considered as a soft tissue attachment point. To clarify this issue, we dissected orangutan and other ape cadaveric specimens to evaluate the pelvic brim soft tissues and how they may relate to the tubercle (when present). We additionally conducted a broad osteological survey of pelvic brim morphology across 28 primate genera …
The Digital Labor Of Blended Learning: The Reading Cities Project, Melissa Dinsman
The Digital Labor Of Blended Learning: The Reading Cities Project, Melissa Dinsman
Publications and Research
In this chapter, we consider the methods, goals, and practicalities of integrating digital labor into literary/historical pedagogy through a discussion of our work on the development and initial implementation of the augmented text platform, Reading Cities. As readers who are also digital humanities (DH) practitioners are no doubt aware, there are multiple forms of labor involved in a digital project blending tool development and research. Some of these forms of labor are readily apparent in the end product’s interface and content, but others would remain largely invisible if it were not for careful documentation of and critical reflection upon them. …
Experimental Applications Of Virtual Reality In Design Education, Amber Bartosh, Phillip Anzalone
Experimental Applications Of Virtual Reality In Design Education, Amber Bartosh, Phillip Anzalone
Publications and Research
By introducing rapid reproduction, algorithms, and complex formal configurations, the digital era of architecture began a revolution. Architects incorporated the computational capacity of the computer into the design process both as a tool and as a critical component of the theories and practice of architecture as a whole. As we move into what has been coined “the second digital turn,” a period in which digital integration is considered ubiquitous, how can we consider, prepare, and propel towards the next technological innovation to significantly inform design thinking, representation, and manifestation? What tools are available to investigate this speculative design future and …

Developing A Culturally Responsive Assessment Model For Short-Term Study Abroad At An Urban Community College, Grace Pai, Katie Wilson
Developing A Culturally Responsive Assessment Model For Short-Term Study Abroad At An Urban Community College, Grace Pai, Katie Wilson
Publications and Research
The literature on assessing education abroad is dominated by studies using pre-/post-survey instruments to measure student growth across broad dimensions like global perspectives or intercultural competencies. Most studies also focus on study abroad programs in private, four-year or graduate schools. There is limited research assessing programs in community colleges serving underrepresented students, despite the increasing diversity of education abroad participants. This article addresses that gap, and even more important, illustrates the process of how an urban, Minority Serving Institution-designated community college designed a culturally responsive assessment framework—one that that combines quantitative analysis of surveys with qualitative analysis of student e-Portfolios— …
Historical Ecology And Longitudinal Research Strategies Around Lake Mývatn Iceland, Thomas Mcgovern, George Hambrecht, Megan Hicks
Historical Ecology And Longitudinal Research Strategies Around Lake Mývatn Iceland, Thomas Mcgovern, George Hambrecht, Megan Hicks
Publications and Research
Historical Ecology has proven to be a very influential tool kit for thinking about complex human interactions with changing landscapes, climate, and other humans. It has also provided concrete and practical frameworks for carrying out sustained long- term place-based research projects that break through traditional periodization to look at the dialectical interaction of human economies and local and regional ecosystems through time. The “longitudinal perspective” pioneered by Carole Crumley’s work in Burgundy has proved to be a very effective tool for carrying out sustained multi-year, multi-investigator, and multi- generational investigations in landscapes around the globe. This paper presents an overview …
Mold, Allergic Diseases And Asthma: Assessing The Validity And Usefulness Of Indoor Air Sampling As A Tool In Providing Health Protective Advice To Occupants, William M. Sothern
Mold, Allergic Diseases And Asthma: Assessing The Validity And Usefulness Of Indoor Air Sampling As A Tool In Providing Health Protective Advice To Occupants, William M. Sothern
Dissertations and Theses
Background: Asthma is a major health problem throughout the world, disproportionately affecting occupants of low-income housing, and exposure to damp and moldy living conditions is recognized as a significant risk factor for asthma and other respiratory diseases. However, there are no authoritative health guidance values (HGV's) for airborne mold, and current scientific thought holds that the establishment of such guidelines is not practicable. Nonetheless, environmental practitioners take air samples for mold as a routine component of their indoor environmental investigations and use the laboratory results as a tool together with other findings to guide recommendations for health protective actions. The …

The Procreation Prescription: Sexuality, Power, And The Veil Of Morality, Lauren Dimartino
The Procreation Prescription: Sexuality, Power, And The Veil Of Morality, Lauren Dimartino
City University of New York Law Review
While considering the dark history that links the regulation of women’s sexuality to governmental efforts to restrain women’s political, social, and economic power, this note argues that the Federal Administration under the 45th President of the United States is unconstitutionally relying on the veil of morality to regulate sexuality and reproductive rights. To provide context on how sexual regulation is a tool of women’s oppression, the note offers a brief background on the importance of contraception to women’s equality and, thus, a women’s potential for power. It then lays the groundwork for how power is defined and maintained—particularly through the …
Nature's Queer Negativity: Between Barad And Deleuze, Steven Swarbrick
Nature's Queer Negativity: Between Barad And Deleuze, Steven Swarbrick
Publications and Research
This essay offers a critique of the vitalist turn in queer and ecological theory, here represented by the work of Karen Barad. Whereas Barad advances an image of life geared towards meaningful connection with others, human and nonhuman, Deleuze advances an a-signifying ontology of self-dismissal. The point of this essay isn’t to separate their two views, but to draw out the consequences of their entanglement. Insofar as Barad’s work conceptualizes life (and art) as a vitalizing encounter, it cannot, this essay argues, account for the queer negativity at play in environmental politics, including the politics of climate change.
Spinal Matrix Metalloproteinase 8 Regulates Pain After Peripheral Trauma, Maral Tajerian, J. David Clark
Spinal Matrix Metalloproteinase 8 Regulates Pain After Peripheral Trauma, Maral Tajerian, J. David Clark
Publications and Research
It is well documented that pain chronification requires a host of plastic mechanisms at the spinal cord (SC) level, including alterations in neuronal and glial structure and function. Such cellular plasticity necessitates the existence of a plastic extracellular matrix(ECM). Here, we describe a key role for ECM remodeling in the regulation of chronic pain following peripheral injury. Three weeks following tibia fracture in mice, we show increased levels of MMP8 in the SC. Furthermore, we show that the pharmacological or genetic downregulation of MMP8 ameliorates the pain phenotype observed after injury. These results delineate an extracellular mechanism for pain chronification, …

Sonic hedgehog (Shh) is a multifunctional signaling protein governing pattern formation, proliferation and cell survival during embryogenesis. In the adult brain, Shh has neurotrophic function and is implicated in hippocampal neurogenesis but the cellular source of Shh in the hippocampus remains ill defined. Here, we utilize a gene expression tracer allele of Shh (Shh-nlacZ) which allowed the identification of a subpopulation of hilar neurons known as mossy cells (MCs) as a prominent and dynamic source of Shh within the dentate gyrus. AAV-Cre mediated ablation of Shh in the adult dentate gyrus led to a marked degeneration …
"The Hazards Of Being Free": Thinking About Not Thinking In Infinite Jest, Josh Cunningham
"The Hazards Of Being Free": Thinking About Not Thinking In Infinite Jest, Josh Cunningham
Dissertations and Theses
This paper is about self-consciousness and how it figures in David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest. Because Infinite Jest is such a large novel (1079 pages, including the indispensable footnotes), it serves, like other large novels before it, as a kind of encyclopedia of contemporary culture. The novel, in large part, treats self-consciousness—a distinctly human phenomenon, one which certainly accounts for our dominance as a species—as a problem (on both an individual and collective level) that needs to be overcome. This is because, as it turns out, self consciousness, when it becomes epidemic, is as much a boon as it …

"Beyond Consolation": Or Strangeness, Estrangement, And Strange-Ing In The Elegy For The Black Body, 1955-Present, Naomie Jean-Pierre
Dissertations and Theses
The Elegy for the Black Body examines the mid-twentieth to early-twenty-first-century poetic justice crafted by African American poets to eulogize individual African Americans whose deaths were the result of racial and political violence. In the age of lynching, mass shooting, and police brutality, I argue that an African American poetic tradition persists that, while not entirely beholden to the ancient elegy, is its distant relative, along with the English and American Elegy. I argue further that while the contemporary American elegy has undergone for the last six decades intensive study, from the notable studies done by Peter Sack’s in The …

La Cofradía de Artes y Artesanos Hispánicos: Redefining Tradition in the New Mexican Art Market. May 2019.
This master’s thesis explores the 1978 founding, existence, dissolve, and the legacy of the Santa Fe, New Mexican artist exhibition group, La Cofradía de Artes y Artesanos Hispánico (La Cofradía). La Cofradía was formed by six Santa Fe Hispano artists in reaction to creative limitations first imposed on Hispano artists in 1926, when the annual Spanish Market was formed. The Spanish Market was the sole arts sales venue available to Hispano artists in the exclusionary Santa Fe gallery and museum market. The Spanish …
Neuron-Glial (Ng) Interactions: A Microfluidic Examination Of Ng Emergent Responses For Repair, Tanya Singh
Neuron-Glial (Ng) Interactions: A Microfluidic Examination Of Ng Emergent Responses For Repair, Tanya Singh
Dissertations and Theses
Neuron-glia communication is crucial to the development, plasticity, and repair of the nervous system (NS). While neurons are well known to conduct electrical impulses that transfer biological information and stimuli throughout the NS, our understanding of the roles of glia continues to evolve from when the cells were largely believed to act solely for neuronal support. Recent decades of research has shown that glia can alter metabolism, conduct impulses and change phenotype for NS repair. NG interactions have, thereby, become heavily researched in varied areas of biomedical engineering, including embryogenesis, neural regeneration, growth, and intracellular synaptic activity. However, while NG …
Controlled Migration Of Retinal Progenitor Cells Within Electro-Chemotactic Fields, Shawn Mishra
Controlled Migration Of Retinal Progenitor Cells Within Electro-Chemotactic Fields, Shawn Mishra
Dissertations and Theses
Vision loss in retinal degenerative diseases is overwhelmingly attributed to damage and death of retinal photoreceptor cells. Studies in mouse retina have suggested that transplantation of isolated post-natal or stem cell-derived retinal progenitor cells (RPCs) to replace apoptotic or damaged photoreceptors may be a novel approach to restore vision. Thus far, outcomes project that the amount of restored visual response depends upon the migration of transplanted cells from insertion in the sub-retinal space to the outer nuclear layer (ONL). However, transplantation efficiency is exceedingly low – ~5% cells transplanted enter the retina – directly limiting the efficacy of the treatments. …
Translational Modeling Of Non-Invasive Electrical Stimulation, Dennis Quangvinh Truong
Translational Modeling Of Non-Invasive Electrical Stimulation, Dennis Quangvinh Truong
Dissertations and Theses
Seminal work in the early 2000’s demonstrated the effect of low amplitude non-invasive electrical stimulation in people using neurophysiological measures (motor evoked potentials, MEPs). Clinical applications of transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) have since proliferated, though the mechanisms are not fully understood. Efforts to refine the technique to improve results are on-going as are mechanistic studies both in vivo and in vitro. Volume conduction models are being applied to these areas of research, especially in the design and analysis of clinical montages. However, additional research on the parameterization of models remains.
In this dissertation, Finite Element Method (FEM) models of …
Janus Particles At The Air-Water Interface: Single Particle Behavior, Particle-Laden Interfaces, And Implications For Self-Assembly, Ellen Knapp
Dissertations and Theses
Recent advances in fabrication techniques have allowed for the synthesis of anisotropic Janus particles with precise control of the wetting properties on each hemisphere. Interfacial assembly of Janus particles is of particular interest as the anisotropy and amphiphilicity of these particles can be tuned in order to drive self-assembly and thus be used to template microstructures in a bottom up fashion. The ability to pattern particles at interfaces has a multitude of applications such as achieving films with tunable optical properties, making antireflective surfaces, improving the resolution of E-paper displays and creating water repellant materials. Furthermore, anisotropic particles at interfaces …
Characterizing Chromosomal Aberrations In Cells Deficient For Both Atm And Msh2, Yeliz Inalman
Characterizing Chromosomal Aberrations In Cells Deficient For Both Atm And Msh2, Yeliz Inalman
Dissertations and Theses
Ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) and mutS homologue 2 (MSH2) are important DNA repair proteins that participate in DNA repair pathways to maintain genomic integrity. Mice deficient for ATM and MSH2 mice are viable. However, ATM-/- mice show growth retardation, neurological defects, and spontaneous lymphomagenesis. MSH2-/- mice suffer from aggressive lymphoid tumors between two to five months of age and have increased microsatellite instability, which predisposes MSH2-/- mice to carcinomas. However, mice deficient in both ATM and MSH2 are unable to survive beyond postnatal day 21 (P21). The observed lethality in ATM-/-MSH2-/- mice may result …

Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disease that affects more than 30 million people globally. The disease is characterized by an accumulation of extracellular beta-amyloid peptide plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles in the brain. The beta-amyloid peptide is derived from a larger precursor protein, the amyloid precursor protein (APP). Mutations in APP have been correlated with Alzheimer's disease. Due to the presence of two paralogues, APLP1 and APLP2, which have overlapping functions, the normal function of APP is difficult to elucidate. Knockout of the entire APP gene family in mice results in lethality and developmental defects, indicating that the APP gene …
Copper-Mediated N1-Arylation Of Benzotriazoles, Magdalena R. Andrzejewska
Copper-Mediated N1-Arylation Of Benzotriazoles, Magdalena R. Andrzejewska
Dissertations and Theses
Benzotriazoles are group of bicyclic heterocyclic compounds that contain three nitrogen atoms fused to a benzene ring. Along with their derivatives, they possess a wide range of properties. They are used in medical field, as they exhibit such properties as antibacterial, antiplasmoidal, antiprotozoal, antifungal and anti-inflammatory activities, among others. They are also used in various industries as herbicides, UV absorbers, deicing and antiicing agents and corrosion inhibitors, to list a few. Because of their wide range of applications, we designed a new two-step synthesis for the formation of N-1-aryl benzotriazoles. 1-Hydroxy-1H-benzotriazole N-oxides were synthesized using phenylboronic acid (PhB(OH) …

Do Saproxylic Curculionids Affect The Fitness Of Co-Occurring Cerambycids?, Sheila R. Heath
Do Saproxylic Curculionids Affect The Fitness Of Co-Occurring Cerambycids?, Sheila R. Heath
Dissertations and Theses
Saproxylic insects sometimes coexist in incredibly high numbers under bark and share common resources. Thus, interactions between species are possible and could even explain their coexistence. This study investigates evidence of negative or positive effects of curculionid beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) on cerambycid beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) that coexisted in dead tree branches in Costa Rica. Co-occurrence analysis and generalized regressions were used to test associations between cerambycid and curculionid species. Three cerambycid species that each co-occurred with a curculionid species were selected to measure fitness. Fitness measures of the cerambycid were compared with abundance of the co-occurring curculionid to assess the …
Reframing As Reclamation: Trauma Theory, African Spiritualism, And Ecocriticism In Jesmyn Ward’S Sing, Unburied, Sing, Alexandra Cohl Ms.
Reframing As Reclamation: Trauma Theory, African Spiritualism, And Ecocriticism In Jesmyn Ward’S Sing, Unburied, Sing, Alexandra Cohl Ms.
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis explores how ecocriticism and trauma theory intersect within Jesmyn Ward’s novel Sing, Unburied, Sing (2017) to tackle the complex act of collective healing. Trauma, and its subset transgenerational trauma, have often been a focal point for critical analysis of other African American texts that engage with ghosts and hauntings, such as Toni Morrison’s Beloved (1987). Often, these ghosts are symbolic of transgenerational trauma in fictional works. While this association is apparent in Ward’s novel, this thesis applies the aforementioned modes of scholarship alongside African-based spiritualism to investigate further the inclusion of ghosts. To accomplish this approach, this thesis …
