A Critical Analysis Of The Projection Of Historical Narratives Of The Indian Tribal People In "Our Past Iii", Sudhashree Girmohanta
A Critical Analysis Of The Projection Of Historical Narratives Of The Indian Tribal People In "Our Past Iii", Sudhashree Girmohanta
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
A critical analysis of the historical narratives of the Indian tribal people in the Indian history textbook, Our Past III part I, that has been published by the National council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is used across every central school in India, reveals an overwhelming presence of dominant ideology. It has been played a pivotal role of the selection and representation of the tribal narratives in the textbook. These ideological features include but not limited to the following: tribal peoples are essentialized and presented as homogenous; their religious faiths are not held with the same regard as Hinduism; …
A Teacher Educator's Narrative Journey Into Mindfulness, Al-Karim H. Gangji
A Teacher Educator's Narrative Journey Into Mindfulness, Al-Karim H. Gangji
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this manuscript style research study, using multiple approaches and multimethodology, I explore mindfulness and wellness in my college conceptual physics classroom designed primarily for pre-service elementary teachers. This high-stake science course is a pre-requisite class to enter the elementary education program. The subject of physics let alone science, creates high level of anxiety and intense emotions. Over the past three decades, mindfulness has gained an exponential popularity in many fields including education. Mindfulness involves one’s ability to pay attention to the present moment. As a tool, mindfulness raises an awareness of intense emotions that often accompany teaching and learning. …
Popular Education In The Civil Rights Movement: Bridging Depth And Scale, Amanda Altman
Popular Education In The Civil Rights Movement: Bridging Depth And Scale, Amanda Altman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis looks at the question of how the direct actions of the civil rights movement worked synergistically with grassroots educational projects like the Citizenship Schools. This thesis makes the case that the lesser-known history of the popular education work of the civil rights movement provides important clues as to why activists were able to organize mass mobilizations and formulate increasingly transformative strategies for change, like the rise of the Freedom Democratic Party. I look at the popular education work of the civil rights movement through an in-depth case study of the Citizenship Schools. The Citizenship Schools were a network …
Ethical Validity: An Ethical Validity Claim For Discourse Ethics, Jamie B. Lindsay
Ethical Validity: An Ethical Validity Claim For Discourse Ethics, Jamie B. Lindsay
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Discourse ethicists generally are anti-realists about moral rightness, in that the rightness of moral norms is a matter of discursive justification, and is not grounded in or by any objective feature of the world. Put differently, the position is that rightness is wholly constructed by our moral practices. Further, discourse ethics and liberal theories of justice more broadly generally rely on a distinction between goods that are generalizable, and goods that are in some way context-bound and particularistic. Jürgen Habermas’ discourse ethics makes the distinction wholly formal, abstaining from any theoretical commitment to which goods are generalizable and leaving this …
The Cinematic Treatment Of Tableaux Vivants In D.W. Griffith’S Broken Blossoms, Sheikh Deen
The Cinematic Treatment Of Tableaux Vivants In D.W. Griffith’S Broken Blossoms, Sheikh Deen
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
D.W. Griffith's (January 22, 1875–July 23, 1948), one of the iconic American film directors of early silent cinema, felt his film Broken Blossoms (1919) to be his one art film and is considered to be an exemplary film in Tableaux Vivants[1] usage. When this Tableau skillfully employed, the effect can be dramatic, for it bridges the gap between theatre, sculpture, literature, and poetry. To better understand how Tableau works in Broken Blossoms, this study intends to analyze several scenes by showing how Griffith employs innovative film techniques within scenes through bodily gestures, motifs, and poetic stanzas to skillfully …
From One Period To The Next... : Menstruation And The Psychoanalytic Process Of Working Through To The Feminine, Loryn L. Hatch
From One Period To The Next... : Menstruation And The Psychoanalytic Process Of Working Through To The Feminine, Loryn L. Hatch
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation delves into the theoretical treatment and place of menstruation in psychoanalysis. Beginning in Chapter I with a broad and varied overview of menstruation with a primary focus on Western culture, some of the persistent ideas and themes, as well as their effects, are illustrated to help pose core questions about menstruation, including how to think about its simultaneous presence and absence within the social discourse and its relationship to psychoanalysis. Chapter II explores the appearances of menstruation in Freud’s body of work, including its relationship to the burgeoning field of psychoanalysis and the fixed place it holds in …
A Heavy Rain Has Fallen Upon My People: Sindhi Sufi Poetry Performance, Emotion, And Islamic Knowledge In Kachchh, Gujarat, Brian E. Bond
A Heavy Rain Has Fallen Upon My People: Sindhi Sufi Poetry Performance, Emotion, And Islamic Knowledge In Kachchh, Gujarat, Brian E. Bond
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation is a study of the use and contestation of Sindhi-language Sufi poetry performance as a means of Islamic knowledge transmission and ethical self-formation in rural Muslim communities in Kachchh, a border district in the western Indian state of Gujarat adjacent to Sindh, Pakistan. Drawing on eighteen months of ethnographic research with Muslim performers and enthusiasts of Sindhi poetry between 2014-2018, I first examine an ecology of performative and interpretive practices revolving around the musico-poetic repertoire of the poet-saint Shāh ʿAbdul Lat̤īf Bhiṭā’ī (1689-1752 CE). I argue that the pedagogical efficacy of Sufi poetry performance is undergirded by its …
Outlandish People: Gypsies, Race, And Fantasies Of National Identity In Early Modern England, Sydnee Wagner
Outlandish People: Gypsies, Race, And Fantasies Of National Identity In Early Modern England, Sydnee Wagner
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Since the arrival of Romani people in England in the 16th century, the figure of the Gypsy has been a staple of English literature and culture. My dissertation, Outlandish People: Gypsies, Race, and Fantasies of National Identity in Early Modern England, argues that representations of Gypsies, from Shakespeare’s Othello and Antony and Cleopatra to Ben Jonson’s The Gypsies Metamorphosed, served as a foil for English writers to create a distinctly white early modern English subject. By investigating the racialization of the Gypsy, this project considers technologies of race that lie within the parameters of England itself. Though the English …
Metaethical Intentionalism And The Intersubjectivity Of Morals, Kyle Ferguson
Metaethical Intentionalism And The Intersubjectivity Of Morals, Kyle Ferguson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
I defend a thesis called metaethical intentionalism, according to which deontic moral judgments (“ought” judgments) are intersubjective intentions or verbal expressions of intersubjective intentions. They have the form, “We shall any of us do A in C,” or are derivable from such practical commitments. They are universalizable by virtue of their content (“… any of us …”) and sharable by virtue of their form (“We …”). My account of the moral “ought” is inspired by the moral writings of Wilfrid Sellars (1912–1989). While I draw on his work and offer interpretations, my primary aim is to develop and refine Sellars’s …

The Zine Union Catalog, Lauren S. Kehoe, Jenna Freedman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Lauren Kehoe and Jenna Freedman have been working on the Zine Union Catalog, aka ZineCat or ZUC, since their Introduction to Digital Humanities course in Spring, 2017: MALS 75500, Digital Humanities Methods and Practices. ZineCat is the home of a union catalog dedicated to zines. A union catalog is a resource where libraries and other cultural institutions that collect materials can share cataloging and holdings information from their individual collections. The most familiar union catalog is probably WorldCat which is used to locate books, journals, CDs, DVDs, and other materials in the world’s libraries. ZineCat facilitates researchers' discovery of zine …
Continuity As Crisis: Two Traditions Of Theorizing About Animal Minds, Adam See
Continuity As Crisis: Two Traditions Of Theorizing About Animal Minds, Adam See
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Contemporary philosophers and scientists remain largely resistant to attributing humanlike capacities to non-human animals, particularly great apes, for reasons that are not based on compelling empirical or theoretical grounds. Mental faculties such as reason, agency, and theory of mind are widely seen as differing in kind from functionally analogous abilities in other extant species. This dissertation appraises the current state of the animal minds literature by means of a critical genealogy charting the development of skepticism about animal cognition throughout the history of philosophy. In doing so, this project addresses the sedimentation of epistemic, linguistic, ontological, and methodological impasses that …
Americans Collecting Natural History, Herbert A. Pollard Iv
Americans Collecting Natural History, Herbert A. Pollard Iv
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In the first decades of the nineteenth century, Americans established institutions of science that called upon the public to donate materials and further the study of natural history. This thesis examines how resident scholars recruited sailors, merchants, and amateur naturalists to collect objects and accounts of natural history in South America. In turn, we find that the kinds of education and professional training that young doctors received in antebellum Philadelphia gave naval surgeons like William S. W. Ruschenberger the skills and temperament to collect objects that were otherwise considered sacred or taboo. Finally, as medical education in urban Philadelphia divided …
Nutritional Strategy And Social Environment In Redtail Monkeys (Cercopithecus Ascanius), Margaret Bryer
Nutritional Strategy And Social Environment In Redtail Monkeys (Cercopithecus Ascanius), Margaret Bryer
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
An animal’s nutritional strategy involves the complex interplay between its dynamic physiology and its environment, an environment that includes a landscape of foods that vary in nutritional composition as well as a social environment of other feeding individuals. Social behavior—cooperative or competitive, with conspecifics or with other sympatric species—influences individual feeding behavior. Investigation of social feeding by estimating individual intake of multiple nutritional components, sometimes referred to as “social nutrition,” can give insight into how social variables may lead to shifts in nutritional niche.
In this study, I examined the effects of temporal shifts in diet, reproductive status and conspecific …
Awful Nearness: Rape And The English Novel, 1740–1900, Erin A. Spampinato
Awful Nearness: Rape And The English Novel, 1740–1900, Erin A. Spampinato
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
“Awful Nearness: Rape and the History of the English Novel, 1740-1900,” argues that representations of rape and sexual violence have played an unrecognized role in the history of the novel, indeed that such plots epitomize the most important epistemological questions with which the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century novel grappled. This project is both literary historical and presentist; while it describes a new genealogy of the British novel, it also traces how representations of rape have substantively shaped our contemporary understanding and rhetoric of sexual violence.
Drawing on the work of a wide array of feminist thinkers, I argue that novelistic rape …
The Argentines Of Paris: Theatrical Networks And Assemblages, Stefano Boselli
The Argentines Of Paris: Theatrical Networks And Assemblages, Stefano Boselli
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This work investigates key theatre productions written or directed by Argentines who left Buenos Aires, for personal, artistic, and/or political reasons, and established themselves in Paris. Case studies refer to the lives, visual art, theatre companies, official appointments, and global networks that contributed to their creations between the 1960s and 1990s. Although others are mentioned briefly, the main focus remains on a cluster of theatre practitioners who more frequently connected with each other around playwright, performer, and graphic artist Copi (nom de plume of Raúl Damonte Botana). These included director Jorge Lavelli; director and performer Jérôme Savary; director and visual …
Leveraging Antibodies For Positron Emission Tomography And Near-Infrared Fluorescence Imaging Of Cancer, Kimberly C. Fung
Leveraging Antibodies For Positron Emission Tomography And Near-Infrared Fluorescence Imaging Of Cancer, Kimberly C. Fung
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The high specificity and affinity of antibodies make them attractive for developing drugs to diagnose and treat cancer. The overarching goal of this work is to explore the synthesis and use of antibody-based imaging agents in preclinical models of cancer. This work can be described as two-fold. In the first part, we investigated how the use of a glycans-specific bioconjugation strategy affects Fc gamma RI binding and why it results in improved in vivo performance of immunoconjugates. To do so, we used the clinically relevant positron emission tomography (PET) imaging agent, 89Zr-DFO-pertuzumab, in mouse models of human breast cancer. …
The Picturesque And Its Decay: The Travel Writing And Journals Of Dorothy Wordsworth, Mary Wollstonecraft, And Mary Shelley, Gabrielle Kappes
The Picturesque And Its Decay: The Travel Writing And Journals Of Dorothy Wordsworth, Mary Wollstonecraft, And Mary Shelley, Gabrielle Kappes
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This project puts forth the argument that when the late eighteenth century’s taste for nature and picturesque tourism had peaked, writers following in the picturesque tradition grappled with the limitations and confines of these aesthetic categories. In the chapters that follow, I present three authors, Dorothy Wordsworth, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Mary Shelley, who are all dissatisfied with the conventions of the picturesque. Dorothy Wordsworth’s Alfoxden Journal (1798) demonstrates the nuances of the picturesque instability where distinctions between nature and the cultural production of nature have become muddied. I then examine three tour narratives in order to draw attention to how …
Tamalin/Gras-1 Connects Glutamate Receptor Activity To The Insulin/Igf Signaling Cascade To Regulate Neuroprotection In A Nematode Model Of Excitotoxicity, Ayesha Chowdhury
Tamalin/Gras-1 Connects Glutamate Receptor Activity To The Insulin/Igf Signaling Cascade To Regulate Neuroprotection In A Nematode Model Of Excitotoxicity, Ayesha Chowdhury
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Brain ischemia is a major cause of debilitation and death in the United States. Excitotoxicity, a condition that arises from the accumulation of glutamate (Glu) in the synapse that leads to overactivation of Glu receptors (GluRs), is the major mechanism of neuronal damage in brain ischemia / stroke. Although it is commonly acknowledged that over activation of GluRs leads to neurodegeneration, it has been recently shown that even during excitotoxicity Glu has a concurrent important role in regulating neuroprotection. GluR-activated transcription factors seem to mediate this neuroprotection, but it remains unclear which signaling cascades and transcription factors are regulated by …
Exploring Vicarious Resilience Among Practitioners Working With Clients Who Have Experienced Traumatic Events, Adam Reynolds
Exploring Vicarious Resilience Among Practitioners Working With Clients Who Have Experienced Traumatic Events, Adam Reynolds
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Vicarious Resilience is the positive impact that practitioners may experience when working with individuals who have lived through traumatic events. The effects of this phenomenon may be noticed as changes in life goals and perspective, client-inspired hope, increased recognition of clients’ spirituality as a therapeutic resource, increased capacity for resourcefulness, increased self-awareness and self-care practices, increased consciousness about power and privilege relative to clients’ social location, and increased capacity for remaining present while listening to trauma narratives.
While prior research into vicarious resilience has focused primarily on practitioners in trauma-specific settings, this quantitative dissertation studied the experiences of a convenience …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
A Neural Mechanism for Capnotaxis in the Naked Mole-Rat
The Naked Mole-Rat (NM-R) is a small hairless rodent that has thrived underground in the Horn of Africa for the past 40 million years. It was first discovered in 1847, but has only been maintained in captivity and studied as a laboratory animal over the past 40 years. To date, more than 400 scientific papers have been published on this species. This is relatively few compared to established lab animals like rats and mice, but those papers contain a trove of information that has changed our understanding of the constraints of …
Provenance Of Tin In The Late Bronze Age Balkans: Preparation Of Cassiterite For Sn Isotope Analysis And The Probabilistic And Spatial Analysis Of Sn Isotopes, Andrea H. Mason
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The sources of tin for the European Bronze Age (2200-1050 B.C.E.) have remained undetermined. Isotopic analysis has shown promise as a means of providing “fingerprints” of bronze artifacts that can be matched to their parental ore sources. This project has accomplished the following: (1) further tested and defined a method for the preparation of cassiterite for isotopic analysis, and (2), determined the provenance of tin used for metallurgy in the central Balkans during the later Bronze Age based on Sn isotopic compositions of bronze artifacts and local tin ores.
Two distinct methods have been applied in recent isotopic studies of …
Flower Unfurling: Buddhist Modernism And The Early Writing Of James Joyce, Erin Garrow
Flower Unfurling: Buddhist Modernism And The Early Writing Of James Joyce, Erin Garrow
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation traces the history of the references to Buddhism in Stephen Hero, James Joyce’s first and unpublished novel, through the author’s previous writing, his sources, and his context, in order to determine how—if at all—the tradition bore upon his earliest depiction of consciousness. Acknowledging that Joyce habitually revisited and refined earlier ideas and prose, it attends to previous essays, notebooks, book reviews, conversations, letters, epiphanies, poems, and autobiographical prose; to available material, bibliographical, and biographical evidence about the specific volumes and performances to which Joyce had access; to language and paratext—including advertisements, introductions, and appended essays—in those volumes; …

Capitalism And The Immigrant Rights Movement In The United States, Marcel Paret, Sofya Aptekar, Shannon Gleeson
Capitalism And The Immigrant Rights Movement In The United States, Marcel Paret, Sofya Aptekar, Shannon Gleeson
Publications and Research
Social movements are full of contradictions, and an inherent tension often emerges between reformist and radical flanks. This becomes especially true as activists attempt to draw connections between varied aims such as opposition to globalization and support for immigrants. During the 1999 Battle of Seattle, the movement focused on opposing neoliberalism (Graeber 2002) and advocating for alternative visions of globalization (Reitan 2012). Some activists also noted the hypocrisy of opening borders to capital while militarizing the borders for migrants. Yet, in the end, immigrant rights movements and their central issues did not feature prominently in Seattle or later anti-globalization efforts. …
Weaving Forms Of Resistance: The Museo De La Solidaridad And The Museo Internacional De La Resistencia Salvador Allende, Carla Macchiavello Cornejo
Weaving Forms Of Resistance: The Museo De La Solidaridad And The Museo Internacional De La Resistencia Salvador Allende, Carla Macchiavello Cornejo
Publications and Research
From the starting point of a 1975 artwork made by Norwegian artist Kjartan Slettemark in Sweden to stop a tennis match in resistance to the Chilean military dictatorship, this article reframes the linear image of networks of solidarity and resistance through the gaps and connectivity of a mesh. It expands the figure of the mesh taken from critical materialism into the affective realm of art, historiography, and art institutions by exploring the cases of the museums Museo de la Solidaridad (1971–1974) and Museo Internacional de la Resistencia “Salvador Allende” (1975–1990). As this article delves into various knots and lacunas of …

Supporting Institutional Objectives By Embedding Mission-Critical Competencies In Credit-Bearing Library Instruction: A Review And Case Study, Derek Stadler, Alexandra Rojas
Publications and Research
This article reviews scholarship of incorporating institutional objectives in academic courses and proposes a method to embed mission-critical competencies in a library instruction course. Few academic institutions focus their mission or core competencies on digital communication. LaGuardia Community College delineates three competencies in its mission: inquiry and problem solving, global learning, and integrative learning. Students exhibit command of these competencies in written, oral, or digital communication. The College defines the digital communication ability as successful collaboration and interaction using online tools, such as discussion boards, either to stage written exchange, or to capture video or oral discussions. Through participation in …

In Vitro Evaluation Of The Influence Of Substrate Mechanics On Matrix-Assisted Human Chondrocyte Transplantation, Yueh-Hsun Kevin Yang, Courtney R. Ogando, Gilda A. Barabino
Publications and Research
Matrix-assisted chondrocyte transplantation (MACT) is of great interest for the treatment of patients with cartilage lesions. However, the roles of the matrix properties in modulating cartilage tissue integration during MACT recovery have not been fully understood. The objective of this study was to uncover the effects of substrate mechanics on the integration of implanted chondrocyte-laden hydrogels with native cartilage tissues. To this end, agarose hydrogels with Young’s moduli ranging from 0.49 kPa (0.5%, w/v) to 23.08 kPa (10%) were prepared and incorporated into an in vitro human cartilage explant model. The hydrogel-cartilage composites were cultivated for up to 12 weeks …

Bitter Fruit, Ronald J. Green
Bitter Fruit, Ronald J. Green
Theses and Dissertations
Pain is a phenomenon like fear, belief, and love -- among the forces that determine the course of our lives long before we are born. These conditions generate the layers of the human soul, marrying one life with others past, present and future.
There is an unconscious consensus on the linearity of time. Our lives, memories, dreams and reflections constantly present a challenge to this general agreement. Life, like time, is a series of interlocking awarenesses. Paths intersect, the actions of individuals deposit change into an internal pool of collective experience. Freud once believed that the past is not fixed …
