The Problem Of Blackness In America: Becoming When The Being Never Comes To Be, Nkiru Anyaegbunam
The Problem Of Blackness In America: Becoming When The Being Never Comes To Be, Nkiru Anyaegbunam
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The problem of Blackness in America is a consequence of the historical reality and continued legacies of colonialism, the triangular trade and chattel slavery that have been facilitated through violence and capitalism. This thesis will argue that this problem that is pronounced through racialized institutional systems of violence such as mass incarceration and housing inequality, which disproportionately negatively impacts Black Americans is part of a larger discourse on the human and (mis)recognition. This violence has created a quintessential incompleteness for Black Americans who neither are recognized as citizens nor human. The problem of Blackness will be continuously grounded in this …
Decorated Sheds, Greg Wall
Decorated Sheds, Greg Wall
Theses and Dissertations
Industrialization changed domestic material culture and established collage as a mode of sociological critique. My practice hijacks consumer habits and design histories to better understand the space between consumption and production. Assembling contemporary readymades with play and humor points to the ridiculous pastiches our homes have become.
Elisa Validation Method For The Detection Of Ketamine In Hair, Daria A. Centonza
Elisa Validation Method For The Detection Of Ketamine In Hair, Daria A. Centonza
Student Theses
An ELISA method was developed and validated to detect ketamine in human hair samples. Ketamine is an anesthetic drug that causes memory loss, dissociative sensations, and hallucinations. Due to these adverse effects, ketamine is a common drug used in drug facilitated sexual assaults (DFSAs). It is very important to be able to detect the substances used in DFSAs over a longer period of time due to the delayed reporting of these crimes. Victims, often out of fear and from the sedative/memory loss effects of the drugs, tend to report these crimes when it is too late to use urine and …
Dancing With The Devil: Carnival And The True Witch Of The Witch Of Edmonton, James B. Barone
Dancing With The Devil: Carnival And The True Witch Of The Witch Of Edmonton, James B. Barone
Student Theses
The most obvious carnivalesque aspects in Dekker, Ford and Rowley’s The Witch of Edmonton—the Morris dancers and their leader Cuddy Banks, and the shapeshifting demon Dog—have received the bulk of scholarly attention. However, very little has been written about the cagey, pregnant servant girl Winifred, who as I argue in this thesis more fully embodies Carnival’s aspects of rebirth and renewal. Winifred endures the play’s turmoil by inventing and reinventing herself. Her powers of creation are antithetical to the downfalls of the play’s two main characters—Frank Thorney and Elizabeth Sawyer, the play’s eponymous witch—as well as the mischief created by …
Ambiguity Of Vision: Reimagining The Hypervisible Void, Kiwha Lee Blocman
Ambiguity Of Vision: Reimagining The Hypervisible Void, Kiwha Lee Blocman
Theses and Dissertations
Asking questions about what Painting is in the 21st century and the dominant narratives it can challenge, my paintings complicate the viewer’s reading of pictorial hierarchy and the projection of human relations in the world. I de-hierarchize and decentralize the compositional components that make up a painting by using patterns to create spatial depth, not European perspectival conventions. In dialogue with modernists such as Matisse who drew from the visual vocabulary of “The Orient”, my central forms derived from architecture and ornamental fragments possess a body-like presence. Further, I reinvent ancient Asian printmaking processes with oil paint. Observing the tenets …

Imaging Of Transmetallation And Chelation Phenomena Involving Radiological Contrast Agents In Mineral-Rich Fruits, Subhendra Sarkar, Zoya Vinokur, Bleidis Buitrago, Lin Mousa, Hayley Sanchez, Analia Basilicata, Jodi-Ann Douglas, Seanetta Reddock
Publications and Research
Exogenous heavy metals or non-metallic waste products, for example lanthanide or iodinated contrast media for radiological procedures, may interfere with the biochemical pools in patients and in common food sources, creating an excess buildup of exogenous compounds which may reach toxic levels. Although the mechanisms are unknown, our experiments were designed to test if this toxicity can be attributed to “transmetallation” or “chelation” reactions freeing up lanthanides or chelated transition metals in acidic fruits used as phantoms representing the biologically active and mineral-rich carbohydrate matrix. The rapid breakdown of stable contrast agents have been reported at a lower pH. The …

More and more scientific and engineering applications in bone research make pivotal advances in treating patients with orthopedics issues. Hence, bone research in the 21st century combines, inter alia, biology, chemistry, mathematics, and mechanics with complementary characteristics that help a holistic approach to bone-related pathologies. Nowadays, it is hard to connect new evidence when jargoning and money remain two significant obstacles to sharing knowledge. “Recent Advances In Bone Research” is a free book – no money involved at any stage - that combines the most recent efforts in bone research from several experts with different backgrounds, every expert seeks to …
The Shopping Experience: Pandemic Edition, Katie De Paula
The Shopping Experience: Pandemic Edition, Katie De Paula
Student Theses and Dissertations
This study is an initial dive behind the decline of shopping malls and stores across America. More specifically, how did the pandemic caused by COVID-19 contribute to the closure and bankruptcies of many shopping malls. Will the e-commerce business eventually take over and be the primary way consumers obtain their items?
The Significance Of Sonic Branding To Strategically Stimulate Consumer Behavior: Content Analysis Of Four Interviews From Jeanna Isham’S “Sound In Marketing” Podcast, Ina Beilina
Student Theses and Dissertations
Purpose:
Sonic branding is not just about composing jingles like McDonald’s “I’m Lovin’ It.” Sonic branding is an industry that strategically designs a cohesive auditory component of a brand’s corporate identity. This paper examines the psychological impact of music and sound on consumer behavior reviewing studies from the past 40 years and investigates the significance of stimulating auditory perception by infusing sound in consumer experience in the modern 2020s.
Design/methodology/approach:
Qualitative content analysis of audio media was used to test two hypotheses. Four archival oral interview recordings from Jeanna Isham’s podcast “Sound in Marketing” featuring the sonic branding experts …
The Ideal Elizabethan Marriage (Or Naught): How Fletcher’S Comedy, The Tamer Tamed Serves As A Sequel, Homage And Riposte To Shakespeare’S The Taming Of The Shrew, Katherine Brillante
The Ideal Elizabethan Marriage (Or Naught): How Fletcher’S Comedy, The Tamer Tamed Serves As A Sequel, Homage And Riposte To Shakespeare’S The Taming Of The Shrew, Katherine Brillante
Student Theses
In this thesis, I take my cue from Emma Smith, who observes that John Fletcher’s The Woman’s Prize, or The Tamer Tamed is “a sequel, an homage, and a riposte to Shakespeare’s own Taming of the Shrew” (xii). While demonstrating Smith’s point, I also explore the ideology of marriage in Renaissance England, considering what it means to be a rebellious woman with respect to that institution. While, as Ann Jennalie Cook observes, “a play is not an exact replica of the customs of the time” (83), these two plays nevertheless illuminate the ways in which marriage customs during this …
Increase In Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (Pots) After Covid-19 Infection, Nana Dufie Akowuah
Increase In Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (Pots) After Covid-19 Infection, Nana Dufie Akowuah
Student Theses
A new severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), popularly known as COVID-19 has been associated with new-onsets of neurological and cardiovascular symptoms after infecting people. Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), a form of dysautonomia, can occur after a viral or bacterial infection. Some symptoms of POTS include dizziness, postural tachycardia, presyncope and orthostatic intolerance. There has been some evidence that has identified POT following COVID-19 in some patients. Commonly affected are female long haulers of child-bearing age sharing a strikingly similar demographic to most autoimmune disorders. The most dominant symptom of long haul POTS at this point may be palpitations/ …
Children’S Ability To Understand And Respond To Wh- Questions About The Mechanics Of Abuse, Kaileigh P. Conti
Children’S Ability To Understand And Respond To Wh- Questions About The Mechanics Of Abuse, Kaileigh P. Conti
Student Theses
One type of forensically-relevant information that can be difficult to obtain is that pertaining to the “mechanics of abuse.” More specifically, information that includes the descriptions of body positioning and clothing placement. Generally, the recommended strategy for questioning children in legal and forensic settings is to use broad invitations (e.g., “Tell me everything that happened”) and wh- questions (e.g., who, what, where, when, why, how). However, when it comes to the mechanics of abuse, there is some conflicting evidence. Some research suggests open-ended wh- questions are best in cases where the mechanics are hard to describe (e.g., intermediate clothing placement) …
Anamnesis: A Film About Forgetting, Neville Pullar Elder
Anamnesis: A Film About Forgetting, Neville Pullar Elder
Theses and Dissertations
In the film Anamnesis I bear witness to the injury and death of my childhood best friend Dominic, when I was 11. The film is a quest: A search for a visual memory that I have forgotten or perhaps, deliberately hidden from myself. Can remembering the events in their entirety and chronological order help me heal? Is searching for the lost memories nothing more than a smokescreen to avoid the steps I must take to deal/heal the trauma?
I communicate the relationship between the interplay of memory-making and sense-making and the reconstruction process that enables our past and present to …
Study Protocol: Investigating The Effects Of Uncarboxylated Osteocalcin And Anodal Trans-Spinal Direct Current Stimulation On Recovery Post-Spinal Cord Injury In Mouse Model, Wing To Ip, Parth Shah, Brandon Nam
Study Protocol: Investigating The Effects Of Uncarboxylated Osteocalcin And Anodal Trans-Spinal Direct Current Stimulation On Recovery Post-Spinal Cord Injury In Mouse Model, Wing To Ip, Parth Shah, Brandon Nam
Student Theses
Individuals with spinal cord injury often present with severe neuromuscular spasticity due to over-secretion of the neurotransmitter known as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Spasticity is made worse by the other sequelae of SCI, including muscle atrophy and loss of bone mineral density. This manuscript presents a study protocol that attempts to target such widespread physiological changes affecting multiple body systems. Our protocol establishes a potential treatment approach for SCI by combining recent advances in literature with a novel approach never seen before. We hypothesize
that the use of the already-promising anodal trans-spinal direct current stimulation (A- TSDCS) along with exogenous administration …

At Home Among Strangers, Aleksandra Gorbacheva
Theses and Dissertations
At Home Among Strangers is a character-driven documentary that explores the price of freedom for a gay person in a society that lacks freedom and civil rights. It follows an asylum seeker from Russia, Sasha Smirnov, during a crucial moment of his life: starting over in New York City at 40 as a journalist without English language skills. The film reflects on the choices one makes and the consequences of staying true to oneself.

Publications and Research
Amidst global shifts in the distribution and abundance of wildlife and livestock, we have only a rudimentary understanding of ungulate parasite communities and parasite-sharing patterns. We used qPCR and DNA metabarcoding of fecal samples to characterize gastrointestinal nematode (Strongylida) community composition and sharing among 17 sympatric species of wild and domestic large mammalian herbivore in central Kenya. We tested a suite of hypothesis-driven predictions about the role of host traits and phylogenetic relatedness in describing parasite infections. Host species identity explained 27 – 53% of individual variation in parasite prevalence, richness, community composition and phylogenetic diversity. Host and parasite phylogenies …

A Parar Para Avanzar: To Stop/To Stand/To Strike To Advance, Christina N. Barrera
A Parar Para Avanzar: To Stop/To Stand/To Strike To Advance, Christina N. Barrera
Theses and Dissertations
This paper presents the first fragments of a political framework outlining how I situate my work, which lives between “craft” and “art” models of making and between colonized and colonizing traditions. My writing proposes ways of making and being informed by practices, strategies, and organizing that work towards greater autonomy and liberation under these conditions.
New Animals, Alina Iakirevitch
New Animals, Alina Iakirevitch
Theses and Dissertations
To transfer the rhythms of the body into the earth, in Lippard’s language, one has to engage in a non verbal, illogical action. Art is the sphere of this action. Staying engaged with the unpredictable in us, the random, the primal, is the core of art making and encountering art.

I Crawled Out From The Palimpsest Crater, Jessica Willittes
Theses and Dissertations
This paper is a dissection and examination of my art-making practice through the analogy of the palimpsest landscape found in Arizona’s Meteor Crater. I attempt to elucidate the process by which a “palimpsest artwork” is made through an unfixed cycle of scavenging, rupturing, joining and offering.
Head, Shoulders, Knees, And Toes, Pol Morton
Head, Shoulders, Knees, And Toes, Pol Morton
Theses and Dissertations
My work explores ideas of transness, chronic illness, and injury. Through assemblage and repetition, my larger-than-life paintings address the dissociation and fragility of a body that is unmapped by society. These autobiographical works attempt to locate the self when it is trapped, whether in a bed, in the home, or within the body itself.
Dust, Mist, Haze, Michael C. Tracy
Dust, Mist, Haze, Michael C. Tracy
Theses and Dissertations
This paper explores painting through the ideas of dust, mist, and haze as specific atmospheric metaphors that could be used to describe ontologies of space, time, memory, and history.
“For My Will Is As Strong As Yours And My Kingdom As Great”, Anna L. Cone
“For My Will Is As Strong As Yours And My Kingdom As Great”, Anna L. Cone
Theses and Dissertations
My work responds to trauma, systems of power and abuses of power. The pieces give materiality to unseen labor and devalued knowledge, often disseminated from the “feminine,” domestic spaces of kitchens and baths, through practices of magic, astrology, ritual and baking. My materials–jello, hair and kitchen ingredients–refer to complex histories, brought present through film and performance.

From Repression To Appropriation: Soviet Religious Policy And Reform, 1917-1943, Andriy Dyachenko
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyses the dynamics of religious reform in the USSR from 1917 to 1943. It argues that the early Bolshevik policy of persecution was increasingly substituted by state co-optation. This dynamic was shaped primarily by Stalinist concerns with state security and problems of ideology.
Uncovering The Layers Of Compassion: A Study In The Cultural Implications Of An Emotion, Suzan Jespersen
Uncovering The Layers Of Compassion: A Study In The Cultural Implications Of An Emotion, Suzan Jespersen
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a study of compassion in American society and how it is conveyed in volunteerism based on ethnographic research conducted at a non-profit organization. I challenge the idea that compassion is a universal and instinctive emotion. Instead, I focus on the relationship between emotions, society, and power.
Rethinking Watteau In The Context Of Early Eighteenth-Century Bourgeois Culture, Bronwyn C. Roe
Rethinking Watteau In The Context Of Early Eighteenth-Century Bourgeois Culture, Bronwyn C. Roe
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis reexamines the work of Antoine Watteau through a social-art historical lens. Traditionally, Watteau's fêtes galantes have been closely aligned to the culture of the French nobility. However, a closer look into the artist's background, training, social milieu, and the class identity of his primary buyers reveals an alternative class alignment, inviting new interpretations for Watteau's most elusive work. This thesis challenges the close association between Watteau and the French nobility and aims to broaden the socio-visual landscape from which Watteau was drawing, namely that of a burgeoning bourgeois consumer culture. In particular, the culture of emulation, with its …
Experimenting With History: Confronting The Archive Through Poetry And The Historical Graphic Novel, Gerina Xhiherri
Experimenting With History: Confronting The Archive Through Poetry And The Historical Graphic Novel, Gerina Xhiherri
Theses and Dissertations
While there is general agreement among scholars about the violence of archives and the danger in engaging with them, there is also dispute about how to challenge the power of official records—whether such a thing is possible—and how literature might be a means to recover some of the lost stories, experiences, and personal histories of enslaved people. The stakes involved in preserving the deepest truths of slavery are high, especially for people of color, who remain both under-represented and hyper visible in objectified terms, and for whom there is ever the threat of a collective erasure as subjects in both …
