Greeting And Leave-Taking, Mayuri Sukwiwat, John Fieg Jan 1987

Greeting And Leave-Taking, Mayuri Sukwiwat, John Fieg

PASAA

Through eight situations the author shows cultural and linguistic differences between Thais and Americans in the seemingly simple acts of greeting and leave-taking. In "Initial Greetings", cultural differences at one's work place are highlighted, specifically the inappropriateness of greeting superiors verbally in the Thai context. Reference is also made to phrases acceptable in Thai but which when translated are too direct in English. Further examples of this are given in the next two situations, "Passing in the Street." In situation four, "Greetings Involving Personal Comments" differences in what are acceptable subjects for comment are shown, the example given being weight, …

What Does It Mean To Be A Thai Student At An American University ?, Jerry G. Gebhard Jan 1987

What Does It Mean To Be A Thai Student At An American University ?, Jerry G. Gebhard

PASAA

In this paper I first report on research on what it means to be a Thai student at a mid-sized (14,000 student) American university. Areas of inquiry concern how Thai students perceive academic work (reading, texts, comprehending lectures, taking exams, talking in class, using the library, and writing papers) and the processes many Thai students go through in adjusting to life in a culture where behaviors and values are quite different from those in Thailand. In the second part of this paper I give suggestions for educators in Thailand as to how they can provide opportunities for Thai students to …

Qualitative Research : What Is It And How Can It Be Used In Tesol In Thailand?, Araya Maurice, Keith Maurice Jan 1987

Qualitative Research : What Is It And How Can It Be Used In Tesol In Thailand?, Araya Maurice, Keith Maurice

PASAA

Because qualitative research is not very well known in TESOL circles in Thailand and because there is much potential for using it here, it seems worthwhile to describe what it is and to mention a few areas it could be used to explore. In this paper, the authors briefly describe its basic characteristics, give examples of its methodology, cite differences between qualitative and quantitative approaches, mention established uses and possibilities for use in Thailand, and finally note a couple of cautions to overeager readers. The key characteristics of qualitative research revolve around a natural setting, the researcher as main instrument, …

Some Uses Of Evaluation In Language Programs, Lyle F. Bachman Jan 1987

Some Uses Of Evaluation In Language Programs, Lyle F. Bachman

PASAA

While classroom teachers and program administrators often spend a great deal of time keeping records and gathering information for evaluation, it is not always clear that this information is used for evaluation, or what the use of the evaluation is. Information gathering is only one aspect of evaluation, and the other aspect - -decision-making, is often not adequately considered. The fundamental use of evaluation is to provide information for decision-making, and the uses of evaluation are thus related to the kinds of decisions to be made. The most lasting use of evaluation, however, is not the specific recommendations it yields, …

Techniques And Principles In Language Teaching Reviewed By Saree Kulsiriswad, Diane Larsen-Freeman, Saree Kulsiriswad

PASAA

There are a number of techniques and principles proliferating in second or foreign language teaching nowadays which have been invented to facilitate both the teaching of language and the learning process. There may be some, however who find the wide range of techniques and principles bewildering and potentially confusing. A great many books have been written to deal with this confusion, which aims at describing, discussing and analyzing the language teaching methods that are in use today. Techniques and Principles in Language Teaching is one of them,- according to Russell N. Campbell and William E. Rutherford, the editors of this …

A Comparative Study Of Spoken And Written Thai : Linguistic And Sociolinguistic Perspectives, Supanee Tiancharoen Jan 1987

A Comparative Study Of Spoken And Written Thai : Linguistic And Sociolinguistic Perspectives, Supanee Tiancharoen

PASAA

This dissertation is aimed at comparing spoken and written Thai discourse. The main focus of this study is on the linguistic features that distinguish spoken and written Thai discourse. These features include subordination, coordination, nominalization, questions, imperatives, direct quotes, particles, and repetition. Since language and social context cannot be kept apart, my ultimate goal is to identify the sociolinguistic variables that contribute to and influence the features differentiating spoken from written texts.
