The Evaluator's Role, Lyle F. Bachman Jan 1988

The Evaluator's Role, Lyle F. Bachman

PASAA

One of the most common problems in program evaluations is the friction that may arise between the evaluator and practitioners—program developers and teachers. Sources of friction include differences in personalities, interests, and frames of reference of evaluators and practitioners, the characteristics of the program or institution, and differences in perceptions regarding the procedures and uses of the evaluation. The program evaluator's most important responsibility is to minimize the opportunity for such conflicts to arise. This can be best accomplished if the evaluator assumes the general role of consultant, or facilitator of the program development process, and follows several specific courses …

As is the case with most innovations, objections have been raised against perceived weaknesses of co-operative learning; the …

Teacher Ideology And The Climate For Change, Mike Long Jan 1988

Teacher Ideology And The Climate For Change, Mike Long

PASAA

Whether teachers are aware of it or not, they employ an ideology about teaching which provides the foundation for all aspects of their work. While a teacher should view his or her ideology as something which develops over time, it is often the case that teachers are resistant to change, instead, maintaining a static ideology which is out of touch with the living world of learning. This article focusses on the conditions which encourage ideological change in teachers, and concludes that the most important consideration in fostering ideological changes in the ESL context is better control of the English language …

Who Are The Best English Teachers In Thailand?, Larry E. Smith Jan 1988

Who Are The Best English Teachers In Thailand?, Larry E. Smith

PASAA

I should begin saying that I am talking about the teaching of English as an international language (EIL) in Thailand and not the teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL). If we limit ourselves to the teaching of EFL, the best teachers in Thailand are often native speaking foreigners. That is not the case however with English as an international language.

Philosophy, Pedagogy, And Communicative Language Teaching, Edward Graybill

PASAA

Communicative language teaching theorists have made significant advances in the field of language teaching, particularly on the levels of syllabus design and classroom organization. However, little work has been done on developing a form of pedagogy which embraces the new syllabus, adopts the recommended classroom organization, and applies both of these consistently to the underlying principles and goals of communicative language teaching. This paper attempts to fill that void. To accomplish this, first, the criteria which an appropriate pedagogy should meet will be distilled from the extant literature on communicative language teaching. Then, a model of teaching from the history …
