Beyond Methods : Alternative Approaches To Instructional Design In Language Teaching, Jack C. Richards

In this paper the assumptions and consequences implicit in two different approaches to language teaching are compared. The first is the view of teaching which underlies the use of methods to determine the instructional design of a language programme. This happens when a specific method or approach such as Total Physical Response, The Natural Approach, The Silent Way or Communicative Language Teaching is selected as the basis for instruction in a language programme. This approach is compared with one which focuses on the nature of effective classroom teaching and learning and derives instructional principles from the study of how effective …

Learning a second language is a process of trial and error. Errors do occur when a learner uses a target language in a real situation. According to the psycholinguistic view-point, a learner develops his own competence in a target language by means of formulating, testing and reformulating his hypotheses of interlanguage grammar. The technique of Error Analysis has revealed that errors from mother-tongue interferences account for only one-third of the total errors (Dulay and Burt 1974 : 106). Most errors are from target language hypotheses that the learner has formulated.

Mrs. Sukwiwat was educated at Master Dei School, Chulalongkorn University, the University of Nottingham, the University of Michigan, and Indiana University. The author makes two predictions for the teaching of English in the next century which have implications for ESL in Thailand. (1) The spread of English as a world language will continue unabated, and by the year 2000 the number of speakers with some functional command of the language will run into the billions. At the same time, the current belief in teaching a native-speaker variety of English (usually British or American) will gradually be replaced by a belief in teaching the local variety of the language for communicative (not imitative) purposes. On the relationship between Contrastive Linguistics (CL) and Error Analysis (EA) views have been changing. To some extent these changes in views display a recognizable geographical distribution. Thus it is interesting to note that CL studies are still strongly represented in the major part of Europe, Southeast Asia and the Far East, while they have declined in the USA, though in the field of pragmatics a rising interest in the latter country is noticeable. While there is some overlap of language between and among the roles we manifest as we mature, there is a core of language common to all speech acts. This article draws attention to the social changes that have occurred recently in the United States. In particular it is suggested that today's high school and college students have developed a youth culture in strong opposition to the views, values and beliefs of their parents and grandparents. This youth culture has a linguistic significance. As the world contracts into "a Global Village" this language shift will become familiar to and popular with young overseas students of English. We should prepare ourselves for new forms of English in textbooks.

Much work has been done on the relevance of the timing of glottal pulsing relative to the occurrence of consonantal closure for phonemic distinctions between homorganic stops. In this paper, I have assembled old and new work on the plosives of Standard Thai, including the addition of data on the palatal affricates. In word-initial position, in both production and perception, the traditionally labeled voiced, voiceless unaspirated, and voiceless aspirated stop consonants are well separated by voice onset time (VOT). The two palatal affricates are likewise so distinguished in production, although perceptual experiments have not yet been run for them. In …

What Was That You Called Me? : Forms Of Address In Cross-Culture Interactions, Larry E. Smith

Forms of address have always been, and continue to be, markers of the perceived relationship between speaker and hearer. While English is the most frequently used language for international communication, there is no "one correct English system" for forms of address. This paper reports on a study done at the East-West Center with representatives of fifteen cultures who offered suggestions on what to use and what to expect as forms of address when speaking in English with people from their respective countries.

Though Western-inspired, the Thai popular song represents a very successful effort on the part of Thai artists to appropriate, transcend and "thaisize" a foreign medium. จริยธรรมคือพันธะหรือหน้าที่ที่เราจะต้องปฏิบัติต่อสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่ง บทความนี้วิเคราะห์ปัญหาที่ว่า มีจริยธรรมระหว่างมนุษย์กับธรรมชาติหรือไม่ มนุษย์มีหน้าที่ต้องปฏิบัติต่อสัตว์ และสิ่งไร้ชีวิต อันรวมเข้าเป็น ธรรมชาติหรือไม่ นักปรัชญาตะวันออกส่วนใหญ่ถือว่าธรรมชาติอยู่ในฐานะเสมอกับมนุษย์ หรือในฐานะมิตร กับมิตร ส่วนนักปรัชญาตะวันตกมักมองว่าธรรมชาติอยู่ในฐานะผู้รับใช้ของมนุษย์ อย่างไรก็ตาม ทัศนคติ เหล่านี้ก็ยังไม่อาจนำมาสรุปการกระทำของมนุษย์ต่อธรรมชาติได้ ปัญหาสำคัญที่กำลังได้รับความสนใจอยู่ขณะ นี้ คือ สิทธิอันชอบธรรมของธรรมชาติ หรืออีกนัยหนึ่ง จริยธรรมระหว่างมนุษย์กับธรรมชาตินั่นเอง

วันนี้ อาตมภาพได้ตั้งหัวข้อให้แก่ตัวเอง ว่าจะพูดเรื่อง "สัจธรรมกับจริยธรรม" เมื่อตั้งเสร็จ ไปแล้ว ก็มารู้สึกตัวว่าเป็นเรื่องที่พูดยาก จึงขอออกตัวว่า ได้ตั้งชื่อเรื่องนี้ไปในตอนนั้น ก็เพราะว่ากำลังมี งานเร่งมาก หัวข้อว่าอย่างไรดี ก็ตั้งไปก่อน ตั้งเสร็จแล้วจึงมาคิดทีหลังว่าจะพูดอย่างไร หัวข้อเรื่อง มีจริงก็เป็นเรื่องใหญ่ สัจธรรมก็เป็นเรื่องใหญ่ จริยธรรมก็เป็นเรื่องใหญ่ จึงคล้าย ๆ กับว่ามีเรื่องใหญ่ ๒ เรื่อง แล้วยังเอา ๒ เรื่องใหญ่นั้นที่ต่างก็หนักด้วยกันมาบรรจบประสานกันอีก ในแง่หนึ่ง จึงมีความรู้สึกว่า เพราะเหตุที่เป็นเรื่องหนัก ก็ยากแก่การที่จะพูด และผู้ฟังก็อาจจะเบื่อได้ง่าย นอกจากนั้น ในแง่ของผู้พูด ก็จะพูดในแง่ของพระพุทธศาสนา เพราะเป็นผู้ที่เรียนมาในด้านนี้ จึงเหมือนกับมาพูดในแง่เดียว คือในแง่ ของพระพุทธศาสนาเท่านั้น อย่างไรก็ตาม ถ้าสิ่งที่เราพูดเป็นความจริง ไม่ว่าจะพูดในแง่ไหนก็ตาม มันก็จะ ครอบคลุมไปหมด เพราะว่าความจริงนั้นเป็นสากล หรือสากลนั้นอยู่ที่ความจริง ถ้าเป็นความจริงเมื่อไรก็เป็น สากลเมื่อนั้น คือเป็นเรื่องที่ไม่แคบ ฉะนั้น แม้ว่าจะพูดในแง่ของพระพุทธศาสนา แต่ถ้าสิ่งที่พูดเป็นความจริง แล้วก็ย่อมเป็นสากลอยู่ในตัวเอง คือเป็นของที่ใช้ได้ทั่วไปทั้งหมด

นักวิทยาศาสตร์ส่วนมากเชื่อว่า สิ่งมีชีวิตที่พบเห็นในปัจจุบันเปลี่ยนแปลงมาจากสิ่งมีชีวิตเดิมที่มี อยู่ในอดีต การเปลี่ยนแปลงนี้เกิดขึ้นอย่างช้า ๆ ค่อยเป็นค่อยไป ใช้เวลานับหมื่นล้านปี ทั้งนี้เนื่องจากสภาพ แวดล้อมเปลี่ยนแปลงไป สิ่งมีชีวิตจึงจำต้องปรับตัวเองทั้งในด้านโครงสร้าง สรีรวิทยา ตลอดจนพฤติกรรมให้ สอดคล้อง เหมาะสมกับสภาพแวดล้อมใหม่ เพื่อความอยู่รอดและโอกาสที่จะแพร่พันธุ์ คงเผ่าพันธุ์ของตนไว้ กระบวนการปรับตัวเองของสิ่งมีชีวิตดังกล่าวจะเกิดขึ้น ถ่ายทอดและสืบเนื่องต่อกันไปได้ด้วยการสืบพันธุ์แบบเพศ กล่าวคือ การสืบพันธุ์แบบมีเพศจะทําให้เกิดมีสิ่งมีชีวิตใหม่ที่มีลักษณะหลากหลาย ความหลากหลายของสิ่งมีชีวิตคือวัตถุดิบของกระบวนการนี้ เพราะในบรรดาความหลากหลายดังกล่าว จะมีลักษณะบางลักษณะ ที่เหมาะสมกับสภาพแวดล้อมในขณะนั้นมากกว่าลักษณะอื่น ๆ สิ่งมีชีวิตใดที่มีลักษณะดังกล่าว ก็จะมีโอกาส ดีกว่าสิ่งมีชีวิตที่ลักษณะเหมาะสมกับสภาพแวดล้อมน้อยกว่า ในอันที่จะดำรงชีวิตอย่างประสบความสำเร็จ เมื่อ เวลาผ่านไป ลูกหลานของสิ่งมีชีวิตที่มีลักษณะเหมาะสมกับสภาพแวดล้อมก็ จะมีจำนวนมากกว่าสิ่งมีชีวิตที่ไม่มี ความเหมาะสมดังกล่าวมากขึ้นทุกที ในที่สุดสิ่งมีชีวิตที่มีลักษณะไม่สอดคล้องกับสภาพแวดล้อม สูญพันธุ์ไปในที่สุด อย่างไรก็ดี ลักษณะที่เหมาะสมหรือสอดคล้องกับสภาพแวดล้อมในขณะหนึ่ง ๆ ก็ไม่เหมือน กัน สิ่งมีชีวิตทั้งหลายต่างก็ต้องผ่านกระบวนการดังกล่าว และทุกชีวิตก็จำต้องดิ้นรนเพื่อการอยู่รอดด้วยการ ปรับปรุงตนเองไปตามการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่เกิดขึ้นในสภาพแวดล้อม หรืออาจกล่าวได้ว่าเป็นกระบวนการคัดเลือก โดยธรรมชาติ (Natural Selection) เพื่อให้ได้มาซึ่งสิ่งมีชีวิตที่มีคุณภาพเหมาะสมกับธรรมชาติในขณะ นั้น ๆ แนวความคิดนี้เป็นของ Charles Darwin นักชีววิทยาผู้มีชื่อเสียงซึ่งมีชีวิตอยู่เมื่อเกือบสองร้อยปีที่ ผ่านมา ธรรมชาติจําเป็นต้องคัดเลือกสิ่งมีชีวิต เนื่องจากทรัพยากรของธรรมชาติที่จะต้องใช้ในการบำรุงรักษา และคงพืชพันธุ์ของสิ่งมีชีวิตไว้ เช่น อาหาร ที่อยู่ ที่อยู่อาศัย และปัจจัยอื่น ๆ ที่จำเป็นต่อชีวิตนั้น มีปริมาณจำกัด ผู้ที่สมควรจะได้มีโอกาสใช้ทรัพยากรดังกล่าวก็ควรจะเป็นผู้ที่สามารถนําทรัพยากรนั้นมาใช้ได้คุ้มค่า เต็มที่ เช่น สามารถมีลูกหลานแข็งแรง มีความยืดหยุ่นในการปรับตัวได้สูง ทำให้สามารถคงเผ่าพันธุ์ของตน ไว้ได้นาน เป็นต้น จะเห็นได้ว่าจุดมุ่งหมาย (goal) ของธรรมชาติจะมุ่งไปสู่สิ่งมีชีวิตที่มีคุณภาพเหมาะสม กับสภาพธรรมชาติในขณะนั้น ๆ มากที่สุด
