Ironic Context-Free Ironies In Thai As Conventionalized Implicatures, Natthaporn Panpothong
Ironic Context-Free Ironies In Thai As Conventionalized Implicatures, Natthaporn Panpothong
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
It is claimed that there are no lexical items in English which are carries of ironic meanings (Myers 1978). Thai is, to determine whether an expression is ironic or not depends on context. Similar to English, most cases of verbal irony in Thai are context-dependent (Panpothong 1996). Yet Thai has expressions which always convey the opposite of literal meaning. In this paper, I refer to them as context-free ironies. Like dead metaphors, these expressions start life as conversational implicature before by-passing their literal meaning. Thus, they are appropriately viewed as conventionalized ironic implicatures. The paper consists of three sections. In …

Intertextuality As A Paradigm For Literary Study In Thai Literary And Social Contexts, Trisilpa Boonkhachorn
Intertextuality As A Paradigm For Literary Study In Thai Literary And Social Contexts, Trisilpa Boonkhachorn
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
In the age of Multi-media, the status of poetry seems to lessen. How so contemporary Thai poets view their own status and their works? In a time when poetry is not the dominant genre in literary circles, poets without patronage can hardly survive in the material world, yet they are brave enough to declare their port's manifestoes. The status of poetry is still divine and eternal, beyond history and time, yet it comes down to earth to serve social needs in creating a better society and world. It is interesting that by applying the theory of intertextuality to the criticism …
The Role Of Thai Architects In Urban Housing Development, Bundit Chulasai
The Role Of Thai Architects In Urban Housing Development, Bundit Chulasai
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
It is understandable that housing in Thailand, especially in urban areas, has been rapidly developed during the last twenty years, due to national, economic and socio-cultural change. Housing has evolved from a simple shelter, built by an occupant, to a real estate project, involving several professional participants. For a long time in the past, a house was considered a work of folk art, and housebuilding was a part of local knowledge. But at the present time, housing in considered a consumer product, housebuilding is the province of the real estate business. Due to economic growth and the increasing activities in …

The Modernity Of Aristotle's Ethnics, Charles Freeland
The Modernity Of Aristotle's Ethnics, Charles Freeland
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Aristotle understood ethics to be a practical rather than a theoretical science. It is a pragmatics, if you will, concerned with bringing about a good life. But the problem and the question from which Aristotle's ethics begins and to which it constantly returns concerns the relation of the theoretical to the practical: his concern is for the type or mode of discourse one could use in providing an account of the good life (Eudaimonia). Is this a propositional, apophantic discourse, a discourse claiming to represent the truth and what is true and from which one could then go on to …
Conversation Of Historic Building In Thailand, Pinraj Khanjanusthiti
Conversation Of Historic Building In Thailand, Pinraj Khanjanusthiti
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
The history and the development of conversation practice in Thailand can be divided into three phases: the period before the modernization of the country in the nineteenth century; the transition period; and the period after the establishment of the Department of Fine Arts. The distinctions between the three periods are characterized by the different attitudes towards the historic monuments, and the different conversation philosophy and practice as a result of the social, political, and economic changes. This article will examine those factors that determine the development of the conversation process and its problems.

The Roots Of Future Blooming: Youth Theatre In Thailand From The Twentieth To The Twenty First Century, Pornrat Damrhung
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
For several centuries, young people have been integral to Thailand's theatre audiences and performance tradition s. They have also been integral to other aspects of Thai community life. Since performances have always been community or court-sponsored events, whole families (including children) took part in the production and staging of performances, as well as forming their audiences.
Teaching Cultural Studies And Area Studies In Thailand, Michael Hayes
Teaching Cultural Studies And Area Studies In Thailand, Michael Hayes
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This short paper discourse teaching western Culture Studies, in particular Australian Cultural Studies, in Thailand. By contextualizing pedagogical issues, such as classroom practices and course contents, with the surrounding economic, institutional, and national educational agendas, this paper outlines some of the tensions between western and Asian tertiary education systems. Specifically, examining the development and place of cultural studies in the western university highlights the inability for cultural studies to articulate its specific view of culture. This paper discusses some aspects of teaching western Cultural Studies, in particular Australian Cultural Studies, in Thailand, and illustrates the issues raised with examples from …
