Pathamasambodhi In Nine Languages: Their Relation And Evolution, Anant Laulertvorakul
Pathamasambodhi In Nine Languages: Their Relation And Evolution, Anant Laulertvorakul
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Pathamasambodhi is widespread in at least 5 countries in Southeast Asia. Hundreds of manuscripts and not less than 10 versions have been discovered. They are composed in 4 languages: Pāli, Mon, Cambodian and Tai, including Tai vernaculars: Siamese Thai, Northern Thai, Northeastern Thai, Lao, Tai Lue, and Tai Khoeun. The styles of composition dramatically vary between detailed enumeration and concision, prose and verse, translation in the style of nissaya and non-nissaya, single language and dual languages- Pāli and another language. The comparative study of the different versions, with emphasis on their content, reveals their relation and the evolution of Pathamasambodhi. The …
Transformation Of Bangkok In The Press During The Reign Of Rama V (1868-1910), Pirasri Povatong
Transformation Of Bangkok In The Press During The Reign Of Rama V (1868-1910), Pirasri Povatong
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This essay describes the emerging public discourse on Bangkok's urban and architectural transformations in print media from the reign of Rama V. It discusses and compares different representations and visions of the civilizing city that were architectured by three groups of publishing elites: the royal elite, the commoner intellectuals, and the Westerners. In April 1869, the Siam Repository had printed an editorial article titled "Bangkok, Siam. As It Is." The Repository's editor was an American missionary, Samuel J. Smith, and the first half of the article was a typical description of the capital city of this "heathen country." The flat …

The Harmony Between Nature And Man In Thai Poetry, Suchitra Chongsatitvatana
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
The paper is an attempt to investigate the concept of harmony between nature and man expressed in Thai poetry from the past to the present to see to what extent this concept has persisted through the change of time and to what extent it has changed. The texts of Thai poetry selected for the study are poetical works of Prince Dhammadhibet of the Ayudhya period, Inao by King Rama II of the Rattanakosin period and the contemporary works of Angkhan Kalayanapong, especially the text of Ya, or Grandma. All the texts selected express a harmonious relationship between nature and man. …
Social And Psychological Factors In Thai Students' Code Switching, Sumittra Suraratdecha
Social And Psychological Factors In Thai Students' Code Switching, Sumittra Suraratdecha
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This paper examines Thai-English code-switching by eight Thai students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa by taking into account Bell's audience design factors (Bell 1984), speech accommodation theory (Giles & Smith 1979; Giles & Coupland 1991), and other psychosocial factors. Code-switching is defined here as an alternation between one language and another made by a speaker within a sentence, sentences, or a conversation. This paper proposes that code-switching is essentially an accommodative phenomenon; that is, speakers will switch into one language if they think it is appropriate to the topic or to their notions of self and addressee. Conversely, …

The Mixing Of English And Thai In Thai Television Program, Prathana Kannaovakun, Albert C. Gunther
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This study set out to systemically observe and describe the mixing of English with Thai-based discourse, often termed code-mixing, in Thai television programs. Data came from 100 hours of programming randomly samples from five genres of Thai television programs - Thai drama, talk or variety shows, academic or hard talk shows, game shows and sports programs. Finding showed that code-mixing is common, with sports programs producing the most. A great number of code-mixing were single nouns. English mixes occurred even when Thai equivalents existed. A few were used for emphasis or clarification, but most were not. Celebrities produced the most …

Simply Another American Myth Revisited, Chalermsri Chantasingh
Simply Another American Myth Revisited, Chalermsri Chantasingh
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
In his article on the relationships among literature, culture, and the history of a people, "Literature and the Historian," R. Gordon Kelly discusses the legitimacy and validity of using literary texts as historical evidence. He states that a literary text can serve as indicator of several social parameters of a culture and of a people who produce and selectively preserve it. Because literary works are cultural products, they should, therefore, be understood in the context of the cultures for which they are intended. Literary works as a class of cultural artifacts must be understood historically (as opposed to critically) in …
Ramakian In Modern Performance: A Way To Cope With A Cultural Crisis, Kittisak Kerdarunsuksri
Ramakian In Modern Performance: A Way To Cope With A Cultural Crisis, Kittisak Kerdarunsuksri
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
In the Bangkok period, the literary classic Ramakian has been reproduced again and again, either in literary forms or performing arts. This literary piece has been reinvented many times, particularly in the course of cultural crisis so as to demonstrate the glory of Thai culture. Although Ramakian is still able to be seen in the form of traditional theatre, i.e., khon (a masked dance-drama) in particular, it was also re-created in modern theatrical form during the mid-1990s, during which a cultural campaign was promoted by the government. This paper focuses on three modern theatrical productions of Ramakian: Rama-Sida (1996), Nonthuk …
Class, Gender And The Representation Of Peasant Women In Vietnamese Literature, Montira Rato
Class, Gender And The Representation Of Peasant Women In Vietnamese Literature, Montira Rato
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
The paper seeks to explore how peasant women are portrayed in Vietnamese literature and tries to highlight that, throughout the development of Modern Vietnamese literature, the way in which peasant women are portrayed is closely related to political agendas and ideological struggles. It also proposes that the construction of peasant women in Vietnamese literature is not only gender-based, but also class-bound. In the period between 1930 and 1945, the victimization of peasant women was used as a tool to criticise the colonial administration. In the 1945-75 period, literature took part in mobilizing the force of peasant women in the building …
Changes In Thai Rural Society: A Literary Perspective In The Development Of Lao Khamhom's Literary Works, Trisilpa Boonkhachorn
Changes In Thai Rural Society: A Literary Perspective In The Development Of Lao Khamhom's Literary Works, Trisilpa Boonkhachorn
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Social and historical dimensions in literary studies may be different from those of social scientists. Literature not only records social experiences of a writer as an individual, but also generates his/her reactions to social changes that he/she has confronted. Since Thailand's first Social and Economic Plan during Marshal Sarit Thanarat's regime in the 1960's, Thai governments has geared national "development" to material growth and superstructures, by promoting the slogans such as "flowing water, electric lighting and good transportation." Over the four decades of material and technological oriented "development," Thai society, especially in rural areas, has been, physically, and mentally, dramatically …

Motion Event Construction In Swedish, French And Thai: Three Different Language Types?, Jordan Zlatev, Caroline David
Motion Event Construction In Swedish, French And Thai: Three Different Language Types?, Jordan Zlatev, Caroline David
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Talmy's influential typology of verb-framed / satellite-framed languages has recently been shown to be insufficient (Strömquist and Verhoeven 2003), in particular with respect of serial-verb languages (Zlatev and Yangklang 2004; Slobin 2003). In this paper, we compare motion event constructions in three languages, where two are clear representatives of Talmy's two types: French and Swedish, and the third is a serial-verb language, Thai. As expected, Thai turns out to resemble French in some respects, Swedish in others but also to possess structural (i.e. syntactic and semantic) characteristics which distinguish it from the two Talmian types. This reinforces, but also clarifies, …
The Tai Muong Vat Do Not Speak The Black Tai Language, Theraphan L-Thongkum
The Tai Muong Vat Do Not Speak The Black Tai Language, Theraphan L-Thongkum
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
A word list of 3,343 items with Standard Thai, English and Vietnamese glosses was used for eliciting the Black Tai or Tai Dam language data at each of the twelve research sites: ten in northern Vietnam, one in northern Laos, and one in central Thailand. The data collected at two villages in Muong Vat could not be used for a reconstruction of Old Black Tai phonological system and a lexicon because on a phonological basis and a lexical basis, the Tai dialect of Muong Vat is not Black Tai, especially the one spoken at Ban Phat, Chieng Pan sub-district and …

Europe-Africa-Asia: The Conplementary Relation Between The World Cultures Author(S) : Hendrich Beck, Hendrich Beck
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
In this paper Heinrich Beck outlines his theory about the relations among the world cultures and their contribution toward what he calls 'creative peace'. Three of the world's cultures, namely that of Europe, Africa and Asia, are seen as much as members of a living organism, which is taken to be a 'Heuristic principle of possible understanding' whereby the integration and mutual reception of these three world cultures can be effected. The European tendency toward rationality and analysis is complemented by the Afro-Asiatic tendency toward holism and synthesis. And there is still further division between the African and the Asian …

Decolonization And Demystification: One Hundred Years Of Solitude And Nationhood, Suradech Chotiudompant
Decolonization And Demystification: One Hundred Years Of Solitude And Nationhood, Suradech Chotiudompant
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This essay aims to explore how the interconnected issues of nationhood and national identity are treated in Garbriel Garcia Marquez's novel Cien años desoledad (One Hundred Years of Solitude). Through a discussion of the two basic yet complex themes of reality and history set against the exclusive backdrop of Colombian history, it is also intended to show how the author reinscribes the myth of nationhood by decentering what Jean-Francois Lyotard terms the metanarratives of the West, while simultaneously demystifying the monolithic concept of national identity in this work.
Aspect In East And Mainland Southeast Asian Languages-A First Step, Walter Bisang
Aspect In East And Mainland Southeast Asian Languages-A First Step, Walter Bisang
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
The present paper has two intentions. It wants to sketch a typological basis for describing aspect in individual languages and for cross-linguistic comparison and it wants to present some first ideas of how aspect works in languages of East and mainland Southeast Asia. Aspect will be defined in terms of a "selection theory of aspect". Thus, aspect markers are understood as operators that select matching temporal phases provided by the temporal boundaries as they are determined (a) in the lexicon of verbs or (b) in additional, overt structures such as resultative verbs, markers of Aktionsart, quantified noun phrases and adverbials. …
Linguistic Landscapes Of Bangkok, Thom Huebner
Linguistic Landscapes Of Bangkok, Thom Huebner
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
The effects of globalization of the world economy on English, now the dominant world language, has been well documented. While increasing attention has been paid to its changing form and to issues of identity and power (Phillipson 1992, Pennycook 1994, 1998, Fishman et al. 1996, McArthur 1998, Bex and Watts 1999, etc.), less attention has been paid to the effects of globalization on the use of other languages for wider communication, particularly in large cosmopolitan urban areas in expanding circle countries. The current paper examines over 600 signs found in fifteen Bangkok "neighborhoods" to explore how the use of language …
A Historical Study Of Time Markers In Thai, Pranee Kullavanijaya
A Historical Study Of Time Markers In Thai, Pranee Kullavanijaya
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
In general, time markers which mark a sequence of events can be divided into two main types: markers that have locution time of utterance as the referential point, and markers that have the mentioned time in the text as the referential point. Both types of markers range from one word which can be either inherent or derived to such constructions as noun phrases and preposition phrases. The study shows an increase in both the derived words and phrasal constructions in the four studied periods: Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, Mid-Rattanakosin and Modern Thai. The study also shows that two types of metaphors, one …
