Reconceptualizing Lndianization: A Study Of The Art Of The Local Female Deities, Rattanaporn Poungpattana

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

It was formerly known and agreed generally that the earliest Southeast Asian people did not create their own civilization, but adopted models from India. Accordingly, civilization in Southeast Asia is called "Indianization". Yet, there are three mains schools of thought giving different views of the characteristics of Southeast Asian civilization. While the first school, led by Coedes, points out that civilization in Southeast Asia is not so different from its Indian models, the second school, led by Wolters, suggests that Southeast Asian civilization is completely different from the Indian one due to the process called 'localization'. Compromisingly, the last school, …

English Language Education In Japan: From Westernization To Globalization, Tavicha Phadvibulya

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Japan is one of the most influential countries in the world's economy and politics. Although the country is perceived as being well-equipped technologically and having an industrious, highly literate, and energetic population, foreign language education, especially in English, has long been a critical issue. From the time of the Meiji Restoration (1868-1945), the Japanese have considered studying foreign languages to be tool to facilitate the Westernization of the country. It was also a key factor in Japan's recovery and rapid economic growth in the decades following the end of World War II (1945-1952). After the postwar period (1960s-present), however, foreign …

Consequently, the Thai government implemented the smart ID card policy in order to improve public services, enable electronic transactions and facilitate counter terrorism efforts. Japanese Feeling For Privacy, Takanori Tamura Jan 2004

Japanese Feeling For Privacy, Takanori Tamura

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

In this paper, we discuss the Japanese feeling of privacy. In Japan, though "Information Society" had made Japanese people aware of their privacy, Japanese like to talk about their daily life on web diaries. We presume that these tendencies towards the privacy issue were encouraged by Japanese cultural attitudes. We tested this observation (hypothesis) through content analysis of newspaper databases and web log articles using computer coding and an online survey. Through the content analysis, we found that the diffusion of information causes a sense of crisis of privacy in newspaper articles but also found people's interest in writing about …

Integrating Implicit And Explicit Grammatical Perspectives On The Acquisition Of The English Articles: An Action Research, Nattama Pongpairoj Jan 2004

Integrating Implicit And Explicit Grammatical Perspectives On The Acquisition Of The English Articles: An Action Research, Nattama Pongpairoj

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Article in English have always been a persistent grammatical problem for the Thai learner. A possible reason for this may be indirect interference, as a similar syntactic distinction involving definiteness and preferentiality, doesn?t exist in Thai. How to remedy this problem in second language acquisition is quite a difficilt but challenging task. The purpose of the study is to investigate the positive effects of intergrating explicit grammar, a for-based approach, and implicit grammar, a function-based approach, in teaching English articles. It will be argued that such an integration, in comparison with explicit grammar alone, can lead the learner to greater …

A Karaoke Approach For Language Teaching: The Case Of The 'Learning To Read Thai From Songs' Project, Yuphaphan Hoonchamlong

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Karaoke is music video with text lyrics on screen. Thus karaoke provides audio, visual, and also textual information at the same time. As a language-teaching material, karaoke can therefore be viewed as a short authentic text, with the sung vocals functioning as an audio reading model accompanied by a corresponding visual context. I will discuss the design and implementation of "Learning to Read Thai from Songs", a web-based, interactive, multimedia, instructional-materials project which makes use of the aforementioned desirable features of "karaoke" to create instructional materials for enhancing the instruction of the Thai writing system and students' Thai script recognition …
