Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Background: Increased dietary antioxidant consumption is associated with decreased risk of oxidative stressmediated diseases. Cooking process affects the quantity and quality of antioxidants in foods. In this study, we investigated the antioxidative properties of ready-to-eat (RTE) cooked meals. Objective: To determine the total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total phenolic content (TPC), and total flavonoid content (TFC) in RTE cooked foods and beverages commonly sold in Thailand. Methods: Thirty cooked food items were purchased from local fresh markets and canteens in Bangkok. The foods were categorized into Central food, Northern food, Northeastern food, Southern food, fast food, and beverage. Levels of TAC …

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Background: A diabetes mellitus (DM) patients sometimes exhibit a pseudo-normal diastolic relaxation during echocardiography examination, which may lead to an incorrect diagnosis. Exercise echocardiography help uncover this hidden alteration, but conventional exercise techniques contain movement artifacts. Recently, an isotonic handgrip exercise was introduced and caused hemodynamic and diastolic changes with less movement. Objective: To investigate hemodynamic and left ventricular diastolic that responses to a dynamic handgrip exercise (DHE) in DM patients. Methods: 12 controls and 12 DM patients were recruited and evaluated for hemodynamic and diastolic functions at rest and 3 minutes after performing DHE. Results: DHE increased systolic blood …

MasterʼS Thesis Defense Presentation Slides In Applied Linguistics: Move Analysis Of The Introduction By Chinese Students, Mei He, Issra Pramoolsook

PASAA

Thesis defense presentation slides (TDPS) are a significant and unique genre in the final ritual of master’s students’ learning journey. However, few studies have explored this genre, especially its rhetorical structure, so students have scant knowledge of it. This study investigates the moves and steps of this genre focusing on their Introduction section. A move analysis was conducted of 20 TDPS introductions produced by Chinese master’s students in Applied Linguistics. Adopting Chen and Kuo’s (2012) framework, interviews with the TDPS authors were then conducted. This study confirms that the framework for M.A. theses, i.e., the source genre of TDPS, is …

The Thai Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Teriparatide (TPTD) is one of the medications commonly prescribed for the treatment of osteoporosis since its approval in November 2002 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). While some preclinical toxicological studies have linked the drug to a dose-dependent increase in the occurrence of osteosarcoma, clinical trials showed the benefits outweighing the risk for TPTD-induced human osteosarcoma. The objective of this qualitative review was to qualitatively assess the literature for the association of osteosarcoma and the usage of TPTD in animal and human subjects. Studies were selected from all available records in the electronic databases covering the period from …

Anesthetic Effects Of Dexmeditomidine-Tiletamine/Zolazepam Combination In Cats Undergoing Ovariohysterectomy, Nunnapas Jiwlawat, Cholawat Pacharinsak, Sumit Durongphongtorn

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Common injectable anesthetics in cats are alpha-2 receptor agonists and tiletamine/zolazepam. Xylazine shows higher rate of side effects because its lower specificity to alpha-2 receptors than dexmeditomidine. However, the use of drug combinations in cats is not much known. Therefore, alternative anesthetic combination should be investigated. Here, we examined the use of tiletamine/zolazepam with two doses of dexmedetomidine in cats. A total of 24 female cats, weight 3.05 ± 0.10 kg (mean ± SEM). Cats were randomly blinded given intramuscularly injection (IM) with either of such drug combination, representing dosage of low dose dexmedetomidine 7.5 μg/kg with tiletamine/zolazepam 3 mg/kg; …

Bovine Paratuberculosis (BPT) or Johne’s disease is a pathology caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP). The parasite causes chronic granulomatous enteritis in domestic and wild grazers. Oral-fecal transmission is the most common form of transmission with calves less than six months old being the most susceptible but not presenting clinical symptoms until five years later. It is a disease that spreads during dairy production generating economic loss due to low productive yield and the early discarding of infected animals. The objective of our study was to perform a serological diagnostic of BPT in herds from the municipality of Sotaquirá, …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A 19-year-old gelding polo pony was presented with a prominent protuberance at the tip of the right elbow and five days later, developed a marked swelling on the entire right foreleg with a high fever. Ultrasonography, performed on the caudal elbow region, demonstrated heterogeneous echogenic materials encapsulated in the fibrous capsule. The initial hematological analysis revealed anemia and a normal white blood count (WBC). Hyperbilirubinemia was detected biochemically. Pale yellow/turbid fluid was aspirated from the protuberance area, which showed septic exudate characteristics and contained Streptococcus spp. The pony was diagnosed with septic olecranon bursitis associated with streptococcal infection. The fluid-filled …

Rabbit meat is considered as a healthy meat due to its high protein and low fat content. This study aimed at demonstrating the amino acids profile in three rabbit breeds, namely New Zealand White, California and Balady rabbits marketed in Egypt. In addition, the estimated daily intake (EDI) of amino acids due to the consumption of the rabbit meat were calculated. Furthermore, the effect of long frozen storage for different periods on the amino acid content of the New Zealand White rabbit meat was investigated as an experimental trial. The obtained results indicate a slight variation in the amino acid …

Recombinant Scfv Inhibit Newcastle Disease Virus In Vitro Infection, Sanfeng Peng, Lintian Yu, Ying He, Dongyang Chen, Li Wang, Xueliang Zhou, Long Xie, Yangqing Lu

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Newcastle disease (ND) is an avian respiratory disease caused by the Newcastle disease virus (NDV) and is prevalent worldwide but lacks a reliable treatment to surmount it. The single-chain fragment variable (scFv) antibody is the smallest functional unit in an immunoglobulin retaining antigen-binding activities. Previous studies have demonstrated that by acting against the NDV phosphoprotein, scFv is capable of neutralizing the virus in infected cells. In this study, two anti-NDV scFv expressing cassettes driven by CAG promoter and EF1α promoter, respectively, were constructed using the piggyBac transposon plasmid backbone. The recombinant plasmids were transfected into DF-1 and 293T cells and …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

FCoV viruses exhibit great genetic diversity, leading to the presence of FIPV-causing variants. Current molecular evolution analysis and genetic variation studies of FCoV in China are predominately focused on gene encoding the spike protein or other structural proteins, while few studies have evaluated genetic variations in nonstructural FCoV genes, which can play an important role in disease pathogenesis. In this study, the gene encoding the open reading frame (ORF) 7b nonstructural FCoV protein of the Chinese Fujian strain FJLY20201 was amplified from the ascitic fluid of a Chinese domestic cat infected with FIPV and compared with ORF 7b from previously …
