Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Cannabidiol (CBD), a major phytocannabinoid present in Cannabis sativa, possesses multiple effective pharmacological activities, such as neuroprotective, cardioprotective and anti-inflammatory properties. However, its hydrophobic nature and rapid degradation mechanisms limit its clinical usefulness. Encapsulation of lipophilic compounds inside modified polymers with hydrophilic properties can improve the aqueous solubility and stability of drugs in specific environments. Therefore, this study focused on self-assembled poly N-isopropyl acrylamide (pNIPAM) grafted hyaluronic acid (HA) nanogels for encapsulating CBD. At the highest concentration 0.25 % w/w of HA-g-pNIPAM, encapsulation efficiency (% EE) of CBD 87.57 % was achieved compared to other two formulations 0.15 % w/w …

Affects Of Air: A More-Than-Human Study Of Atmospheres And Sustainable Development In Bang Kachao, Leonie Hueppe
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This paper investigates urban air as an agentic force shaping the relationship between Bangkok and Bang Kachao, its designated "green lung." Traditional sustainable development frameworks often overlook air's dynamic role, treating it as a passive environmental component rather than an active participant in urban ecologies. Drawing on ethnographic research in Bang Kachao, this study argues that an affective, more-than-human analysis of urban air provides crucial insights for rethinking sustainable urban development beyond anthropocentric paradigms. Employing an urban assemblage approach and the concept of affective atmospheres, the paper explores how the materializations of urban air — specifically heat, wind, and pollution …

Beyond The ‘Boy Crisis’: Reframing Gender Performativity In Belgian Classrooms, Marjolein Vanmaercke
Beyond The ‘Boy Crisis’: Reframing Gender Performativity In Belgian Classrooms, Marjolein Vanmaercke
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This thesis challenges the dominant discourse surrounding the so-called "boy crisis" in education by critically examining gender performativity in Belgian classrooms. Rather than accepting the narrative that boys are inherently disadvantaged in contemporary schooling, this study interrogates how gender is constructed and performed within educational settings. Drawing on Judith Butler’s theory of performativity, the research explores how teachers, curricula, and peer interactions contribute to the reinforcement or subversion of traditional gender norms. Using qualitative methods, including classroom observations and interviews with educators and students, the study highlights the ways in which gendered expectations shape students' educational experiences and outcomes. The …

The brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), is a major rice pest in Southeast Asia and is developing increased resistance to chemical insecticides. Fungi from the genus Metarhizium offers a promising alternative for biological control, but their efficacy is constrained by slow infectivity and environmental sensitivity. In this study, two Metarhizium isolates, MLUBN038 and MNMHN031, were identified as M. koreanum by multilocus phylogenetic analysis. Improving thermotolerance of the fungus using gamma irradiation generated 79 thermotolerant mutants. Among them, ML038-Mt 71 and MN031-Mt 46 showed improved vegetative heat tolerance at 39 °C and conidial resistance at 45 °C, along with enhanced …

This study explores the formulation, characterization, and printability of prototype inks based on TPX and TPSP polymer matrices, with a focus on the effects of pigment composition, viscosity, and flexibility modifiers. FT-IR and XRF analyses confirmed that both ink types primarily contained titanium dioxide (TiO₂) and aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃), indicating the use of similar pigments. The results revealed that ink viscosity significantly influenced printability. TPX-based inks exhibited high viscosity, resulting in poor ink transfer and failed printing, while TPSP-based inks demonstrated lower viscosity and better print performance. However, both ink types showed limited opacity, even after multiple print layers. Microscopic …
Neuroprotective Effect Of Phenolic Compounds From Thai Plants, Panuwat Worasrihirun
Neuroprotective Effect Of Phenolic Compounds From Thai Plants, Panuwat Worasrihirun
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Neurodegeneration is a progressive condition characterized by the loss of neurons and synaptic connections, with the risk of diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's increasing with age due to factors such as protein misfolding, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation, which disrupt cognitive and motor functions. Despite significant research, effective treatments for age-related neurodegeneration remain limited. This study explores the neuroprotective effects of phenolic compounds from Thai plants, known for their antioxidant properties. Phenolic compounds were extracted from Boesenbergia rotunda (L.), Limnophila aromatica, and Acronychia pedunculata (L.), along with a library of at least 50 compounds. Their cytotoxicity was assessed in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma …

Osteoporosis In Androgen Deficient Rats And Monkeys And Preventive Effects Of Pueraria Mirifica On Bone Loss, Thaweechai Saetae
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Androgen deficiency is a common cause of bone loss in males. However, determining the exact timing of significant declines in androgen levels and the associated bone loss during this period is challenging. To understand this phenomenon, the first set of experiments was conducted in male rats to observe changes in bone following both a gradual and abrupt decline in testosterone levels. Four-month-old male rats were sham-operated (SH) and orchidectomized (ODX). After 9 days, 2, 4, 6, and 8 months, the rats were euthanized, and bone quantity (mass) and quality (geometry) were measured at the 4th lumbar vertebra (L4), tibia metaphysis …
