Forced impregnation process is normally performed under vacuum at freezing temperature which requires expensive plastination apparatus. To reduce the cost in the plastination process, forced impregnation of porcine hearts under two different environments, which are at the freezing temperature (-20oC) and at room temperature (22-25oC), was compared. Twelve porcine hearts were collected from a slaughter house, and divided into the groups, six in each, and subjected to be plastinated by S10 standard technique at the two temperatures. Although the forced impregnation at room temperature, also the curing process, was more time-consuming, all hearts from both groups produced satisfying plastinated specimens. …

Rodent infestation is considered as one of the major pest problems since it is not only acting as a health hazard, but also causes damages to household, agricultural fields and even transportation business. The use of rodenticides is a common approach to rodent control, however, most rodenticides are poisonous to man. Therefore, using natural extracts as a rat repellent may be a better alternative. In the current study, various natural extracts were experimented whether they could repel a rat when testing in the behavioral model, a circular open field. The tested substances were wintergreen oil, chilli, peppermint oil, bergamot oil …

The estimation of the postmortem interval (PMI) is necessary for supporting justice to the dead. During the early stage of death, estimation of PMI of the corpses depends on the changing of muscle contraction and physical conditions, but this method can be used effectively in case of death within 24 hours. Flies are the first organisms which swarm on corpses. Consequently, accuracy of the estimation of PMI using fly larvae collected from corpses depends on identification of the species of flies. However, the macroscopic method using posterior spiracle is not definite for identifying the species of flies. Therefore, the molecular …

Objective : The biological roles of Wolbachia, a filarial intracellular bacteria, have promoted applied researches in lymphatic filariasis. Analysis of Wolbachia proteins will provide complementary information on the biology of Wolbachia, as well as the immune mechanisms against filarial nematodes. We therefore developed a Wolbachia isolation method from Dirofilaria immitis (dog heartworm) for protein analysis. Methods : Wolbachia bacteria were homogenized and isolated by fractioned centrifugation by using 0.85% NaCl supplemented with varying concentration of Nonidet P-40 (NP-40) as the homogenization buffer. The purity of Wolbachia extracts were analyzed by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), and by quantitative polymerase …

Objective : Dirofilariasis or heartworm disease, a mosquito-borne parasitic disease, continues to be a serious problem in canine (dogs) and feline (cats) species. The disease is caused mainly by the filarial nematode, Dirofilaria immitis. In canine dirofilariasis, the adult worms, present in the pulmonary arteries and the right ventricle, causing damages and leading to pulmonary hypertension and right-sided congestive heart failure. In addition, acute death in feline dirofilariasis causes lung injury resulting in respiratory distress. Being critical to transmission and complex disease pathology, the microfilarial stage is useful in laboratory diagnosis; however, the microfilaria identification process is laborious, difficult and …

Canine Heartworm (Dirofilaria Immitis, Leidy) And Risk Of Infection In Human, S. Tiawsirisup
Chulalongkorn Medical Journal
Canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is a filarial nematode which dogs, cats and some wildlife creatures are definitive hosts, and humans are accidental hosts. Life cycle of this nematode involves the development in the mosquito vector. Microfilaria released from a female nematode can be found in the definitive host's blood circulation and is required to develop into the third or infective stage larva in the mosquito. Infective stage larva will be released from infected mosquito's mouthpart into the host's skin during the course of taking the blood meal, develop into an adult stage in the definitive host, and reside in the …

Some kinds of eye drop such as Latanoprost, Chloramphenicol, Cefazolin, Ceftazidime, Vancomycin and Amphotericin B need to be kept at the temperature of 2-8 degree celsius to maintain their efficiency. Patients are usually recommended to keep these drugs in the refrigerator while dispensing. However, the temperature in the refrigerator is not consistent especially the refrigerator's door has higher temperature than other parts.
